The last days and death of the transport “Armenia” November 7, 1941
Destroyer "Sposobny"

Chapter 6.
The last days of “Armenia”, starting from 03.11.41

There is no separate file on the motor ship “Armenia” in the state archives! Therefore, grains of information had to be found by studying hundreds and hundreds of storage files.

I, completely far from archival work, came across an interesting phenomenon, probably akin to drug euphoria - when you touch a document, most often handwritten, reading it becomes addictive, you lose the sense of time, hunger, thirst. An indescribable feeling fills you with the realization that you are sometimes the first to read what a person wrote decades ago (an insert is attached to each case, where you can see who got acquainted with this case and when). You touch the written information with your fingers, and there is a frightening feeling of the presence of the author of these lines.

Of course I wanted to illuminate history of the motor ship "Armenia" starting from July 22, 1941. But the time allotted in life for one person is too little. I was able to devote only my 12 years to this. Therefore below...

Events directly related to the last days of the motor ship “Armenia” are presented in tabular form for better understanding.

Photocopies of archival files of the German Federal Military Archives in the city of Freiburg.

Afterword

According to Resolution of the State Defense Committee No. 187 of July 17.07.41, XNUMX, the third departments of military units and the third departments of the fronts are transformed into special departments subordinate to the Directorate of Special Departments of the NKVD (with the inclusion of the institute of political workers as the supervisory body of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks in the divisions and units of the Red Army, the Navy).

A special department of the Black Sea Fleet is conducting an investigation into the death of the Armenia transport to establish the causes and those responsible.

The result of this investigation was two documents (available at the time of writing), dated November 8:

Special message the head of the 3rd department of the 62nd air brigade, whose planes covered “Armenia”, battalion commissar Martynenko addressed to the head of the 3rd department of the Black Sea Fleet, brigade commissar Kudryavtsev; And

Report senior commissioner of the 2nd department of the 3rd department of the Black Sea Fleet, political instructor Lezhnev, addressed to the head of the 2nd department of the 3rd department of the Black Sea Fleet, battalion commissar Kuznetsov.

I believe that everyone interested in the truth can correlate the above factual data from the combat logs, weather conditions, tactics of using weapons, descriptions of the operational situation in the city of Yalta with the conclusions made during the investigation by employees of 3 departments.

To be continued ...

You have carried out extremely important and responsible work at a very high level. if you are a professional historian, hats off, if not, but everyone did it - twice!

,,, it’s not entirely clear, the commander of SK 0122 says torpedoes, the pilot Feoktistov says bombs, so what sank them?

The next part will contain my thoughts on this question.
There are only Fektistov, as a primary source, talking about bombing, then it began to appear in some of the higher-level documents. All other primary sources about torpedoing

,,, but it’s not clear, the pilots say one thing:

From the report of ml. Lieutenant Stepanov:
At a distance of 30-40 km from Yalta at a heading of 140 I observed anti-aircraft fire from the ship and from the accompanying boat. Noticing the bombard. Yu-88, attacked him. At that moment I observed a bomb falling into the bow and smoke where the bomb hit. They were chasing Yu-88, which disappeared. We returned to the site of the bombing of the ship and observed the ship plunging its bow into the water. The stern propeller did not work. Near the ship I saw a lot of floating objects, which I couldn’t make out. A patrol boat was nearby. After several turns, I lost sight of the ship. The boat remained. I followed the leader to the airfield.
And by plane, was it Yu88 or He111?

            Sergey,
In previous chapters, it was not in vain that I described the tactics of using torpedoes and bombs. I also repeatedly make references to the weather. Let me repeat briefly.
Weather: sea state 6-7 (average wave height 5 m), cloud base 400-500 meters, strong wind.
            Use of bombs.
If the bombing is free (carried out from a height of 4-4.500 m), then ARMENIA is not visible behind the clouds. If from a dive, then at the beginning of the dive (the same 4-4.5000 m) ARMENIA should be visible for a long time in order to calculate the course and pitch of the dive. Dropping bombs in a dive 1.500 - 1.200 ARMENIA is again not visible due to low clouds. Of course, the option of dropping bombs above cloud cover is possible. But in this case, the fascist planes would have been discovered by our cover planes. Who walked above the clouds.
            Use of torpedoes.
Entering the combat course from a height of 100-200 meters above water level. Dropping a torpedo from a height of 15-20 meters.

What type of weapon is objectively suitable for use in our weather conditions?
And this does not take into account that only Feoktistov, the primary source, talks about bombs.

Sergey, regarding restrictions on the use of torpedoes based on sea conditions, I did not find any information. Not in the sense that there are no restrictions, but in the sense that I have not encountered them. Sometimes it is written that, due to the excitement, the torpedo did not start moving - it “broke.”
I have an instruction manual and technical manual from a German archive. service. Not a "how to" guide.
But we have the following facts: a) the departure of two torpedo bombers for a torpedo attack, b) a torpedo attack by two torpedo bombers with the release of torpedoes in the area of Cape Sarych, this is 40-45 km in front of Yalta. That is, the roughness of the sea did not prevent VOROSHILOV and KOMMUNIST from attacking. I noted in the text of the article that before the release, the pilots could set the depth of the torpedo. I don't know why. I can guess that it’s just to level out the excitement. It would be great to get expert advice on this issue.

Only the stars of the catwalk are above the crowd.
    Involvement in the investigation.
And several years ago, when Shoigu was just planning to find Armenia, the information company was the same. Well-known conclusion: no one screws. Everyone violated everything, everyone would have died in captivity and, ultimately, the lagkry, the Gestapo. Evacuation beyond the bounds of reason was a chance (they didn’t slip through the cracks). The chance was used at 95, and the remaining 5% were hit by a torpedo(?) from a lone plane.
    Fiction is not conclusions.
And then the conclusions - the position of the state - claims - harshness, turning into cruelty - in compensation. But the laces on other people's shoes are for the peace of friends.
Even based in Constanta there is a chance to screw up the Latins.
    Understand and understand.
There is no way to fight with NATO.
Next, you yourself will add an excuse for refusing to put pressure on the former enemies and murderers of the peoples of the USSR. There are no excuses for them, but they also have the responsibility to buy gasneft. If there are no conclusions, then we remain in the past, without a look or perspective into the future.

Respect and respect to the author for working with primary sources.

In essence, this is a war when the situation is unclear, reports are not always reliable, commands are not always carried out...

Was it a bomb or a torpedo, or were there several of them... A bomb from a top-mast, IMHO, is sometimes worse than a torpedo. And it’s probably not always possible to confuse what a bomber was doing from an airplane, whether it was launching a torpedo or carrying out top-mast bombing, especially in the heat of battle. Moreover, the Germans used the same types of bombers for both.

There was more than one dive to Armenia.
“The superstructures and decks have obvious and terrifying signs of destruction - railings and other vertical elements are turned outward. Most likely, these are the consequences of explosions from aircraft bombs,” said Sergei Fokin, executive director of the Center for Underwater Research of the Russian Geographical Society, a participant in the expedition, as quoted by the press. service...According to the data received, the nature of the damage indicates that the ship was not sunk by torpedoes, as previously assumed, but as a result of attacks by German aircraft.
“For a detailed examination of the object, located 15 nautical miles from the coast at a depth of 1 meters, a domestically produced remote-controlled uninhabited underwater vehicle (ROV) of the RT series was used, which made it possible to obtain the first video frames,” the Russian Geographical Society reported.

The boats from Armenia were lowered, what happened to them next is unknown.
A documentary film “Black Sea Zugzwang. The death of the motor ship "Armenia" (2021).
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OMPt1rf4vA
The film answers many questions, both in the article and in the discussions, I advise you to watch it. For example

The film contains information on what was the basis for the lightgram from the commander of the minesweeper; the minesweeper received a lightgram from the destroyer Soobrazitelny that the entire coast of Crimea from Yalta to Cape Chauda on the eastern shore of the Feodosia Gulf is occupied by the enemy, of which there is not a word in the case (4 On November 1941, the chief of staff of the Black Sea Fleet gave a warning to the fleet that the entire coast from Yalta to Cape Chauda was occupied by the enemy, about which there was also nothing in the file. Moreover, the commander of Sobratstley, captain 3rd rank Vorkov, was sure that the minesweeper and Armenia were included in the convoy he is escorting, which they had no idea about)
Yes, by the way, Krol commanded the minesweeper Gruz, not Vostok. It clearly shows how such things were done in those days. Kroll, by the way, was ultimately acquitted.

Yes, a lot of work has been done and it’s interesting.
Unfortunately, it does not bring us one step closer to the actual events that took place in Yalta and Sevastopol.
Only real participants in the events can answer, and not always. An investigation was carried out, interrogation protocols were preserved, but probably little reliable can be gleaned from them. In Sevastopol in XNUMX, being put on trial meant certain death. However! The preliminary results of the investigation contain the main thing. The operational duty officer of the fleet headquarters NEVER gave the go-ahead for “Armenia” to leave!
Admiral Eliseev did not give the command for “Armenia” to leave Yalta.
Why did the m/v leave Yalta?
The reasons are not in Sevastopol, but in Yalta.
Who could force or force the commander (captain) to go to sea without a command?
Eyewitnesses can answer these questions, but there are none.
Why did they force the commander to do this?
What really happened in Yalta on the morning of November 6?
What is not in the archives...
The clue may or may not be the words, "part of the party leadership and members of their families..."

It seems that eyewitnesses of the incident reported that the ship was covered with one successful bomb by our German partners...
After which the overloaded steamer broke down amidships and, understandably, very soon filled with water. With subsequent sinking to the bottom.

It seems that eyewitnesses of the incident reported that the ship was covered with one successful bomb by our German partners...

Based on the results of an examination of the "Armenia" lying on the bottom, it was suggested that its torn hull may indicate that the ship also had ammunition that detonated when hit by a bomb - one bomb could not lead to such destruction and such a rapid sinking of the ship.
