German self-propelled artillery installation "Bar"

24
At the beginning of March 43, the Krupp company presented for its acquaintance the specialists of the German Armaments Department Wa Pruef 6 its own project of an assault self-propelled gun having a caliber 305 mm. The barrel of the gun had a length in 16 calibers.
The year 1943 was saturated with amazing projects at the German military-industrial complex. The war, which was supposed to be completed two years ago, continues, and not in favor of Germany. Tipping battles using large armored vehicles showed the warring parties all the advantages of this equipment. Ambitious and almost not embodied in iron projects of armored vehicles - self-propelled artillery mounts, heavy and heavy Tanks Represented such well-known German manufacturers of armored vehicles as Rheinmetall, Krupp, Alkett, Daimler-Benz, Porsche and MAN.
By the way, the same specialists of the sixth inspectorate also issued design tasks to all the above companies. Funding for all armored vehicle projects went through the aforementioned “Wa Pruef 6”.

German self-propelled artillery installation "Bar"

SAU "Bar"
The design name of the self-propelled armored mortar is “BAR”. Vertical pointing angles of a gun 0-70 degrees, horizontal pointing angles ± 2 degrees. The total weight of the 16500 gun mount kilogram. The bar has used two types of shells, high-explosive and concrete-breaking.

High-explosive projectile - weight 350 kilogram, the initial flight speed 355 meters per second, the range of application of almost 11 kilometers.
Concrete projectile - weight 380 kilogram, the initial flight speed 345 meters per second, the range of 10 kilometers.
Energy recoiled in the production of a shot 160 tons, the estimated length, which will roll back the instrument in the production of a shot 100 centimeters.
Ammunition mortars self-propelled installation - 10 shells of these types.
The self-propelled installation team for design data - 6 people:
-commander SAU;
- gunner;
- two loaders;
- radio operator;
- driver-mechanic.

Booking of a self-propelled unit looked very powerful: the upper nose of the ACS was 130 mm, the lower nose of the hull was 100 mm, the side armor was 80 mm. In addition, the bottom of the front-end ACS received armor in 60 mm, the rear part in 30 mm. The roof of the self-propelled unit received armor - 50 mm.
The chassis was designed on the basis of the components used for the production of tanks "Panther" and "Tiger".
Maybach's propulsion system from the company - HL-230, 3000 revolutions per minute, power 700 hp
Transmission - AK 7 -200.
Chassis designers Krupp designed themselves. The support rollers had a diameter of 80 centimeters and were suspended on leaf-shaped leaf springs.
Presumably, the Bar would use the fighting and transport tracks, the 50 and 100 track widths, respectively, in centimeters. Specific pressure 1.02 kg / cm2.
The speed of the SAU "Bar" was small, about 20 km / h.
The weight of the car corresponded to the weight of super heavy tanks and was equal to 120 tons.
The design length of the self-propelled unit 8.2 meter, width 4.1 meter, height 3.5 meter, ground clearance 50 centimeters.

The fate of the project SAU "Bar"
By mid-May 43, Krupp found out about a competitor — a self-propelled unit that Alkett’s designers were working on. The SAU of the competitors was armed with an instrument of even a larger caliber than the SAU “Bar” - 380 mm. Competitive self-propelled unit used the chassis of the tank "Tiger".
"Wa Pruef 6" for mass production chooses self-propelled artillery installation manufactured by Alkett company, the project of self-propelled guns of Krupp company is not destiny, and is included in history armored vehicles as an unrealized project.

      No matter how much furore? Slow, enormous ... that can’t cross a single river (where to find a bridge capable of supporting such a weight), without the possibility of transferring along the railway (I recall the weight of 120 tons !!!), and most importantly, what are the goals in 1943 was this piece of g ... going to shell? By T-34 on Prokhorovka bullet? Another crazy project gloomy Teutonic genius ....

        Yes, his undercarriage will not withstand more than a dozen shots. On battleships, it was considered necessary to change the road wheels of the turret guns and Mamers after 20 volleys! So there is a stationary, tower placement of the gun! The focus is on the ship's hull! And then the chassis is based on the Tiger! Which could not stand uphill at an angle of 20 degrees! What can we talk about! Another German "gigantomania"!

        The question is, where was it used? In my opinion, its application has not yet been found. Near Sevastopol they used "Karl" mortar. And about "Dora", in my opinion, Halder wrote "a work of art, but useless."

          And even then, Karl did not show anything special there compared to the usual labial artillery.

          In Wik, with links to literature, they write:
          "....... The first concrete-piercing shell weighing 7088 kilograms" Dora "fired on June 5 at the northern part of Sevastopol. But the use of the gun did not give the results that the Wehrmacht command hoped for. Only one successful hit was recorded, which caused an explosion of the ammunition depot on the northern coast of Severnaya Bay, located at a depth of 27 m.In other cases, a cannon shell, penetrating into the ground, pierced a round barrel with a diameter of about 1 m and a depth of 12 m (according to some sources - up to 32 m). the war charge, the soil was compacted and a drop-shaped cavity with a diameter of about 3 m was formed. This result did not cause much harm to the defenders of the city. The harm could be colossal if the shell of the gun hit exactly the reinforced concrete floors of an important object. Any defensive structure could be seriously damaged only with a direct hit. But for a more accurate hit, it interfered with the fact that it was impossible to keep such a weapon near the front nym due to extreme vulnerability. With a minimum firing range of 25 km, the gunners were aiming the Doura not at a specific target, but at an approximate area. At the same time, it was possible to hit a specific target with a lot of luck. All in all, the gun used up 48 shells, and the columns of smoke from the explosions rose to a height of more than 150 m. Also, 5 test long-range high-explosive shells were fired from the Dora, which went 35 kilometers into the sea. The shelling from the gun was carried out for 13 days. Then the gun was dismantled. Even the B-30 and B-35 armored turret batteries were most likely blown up by the defenders of Sevastopol themselves, by order of the command, when they ran out of shells. In comparison with the efforts spent on providing combat activities, there was little sense from the supercannon. However, reports of Dora's successful hits were sent to Berlin to appease the general staff and leadership. [3] After the capture of Sevastopol by the German troops, the Germans carefully removed all traces of the secret weapons and transported the gun near Leningrad to the area of the Taitsy station [4].

          The commander of the 11th army besieging Sevastopol, Field Marshal Erich von Manstein wrote [5]:

          ... And the famous Dora gun of 800 mm caliber. It was designed to destroy the most powerful facilities of the Maginot line, but it was not necessary to use it there for this. It was a miracle of artillery technology. The trunk had a length of about 30 m, and the carriage reached the height of a three-story house. It took about 60 trains to deliver this monster to a firing position along specially laid tracks. For its cover, two anti-aircraft artillery divisions were constantly at the ready. In general, these expenses undoubtedly did not correspond to the achieved effect. Nevertheless, this gun destroyed a large ammunition depot on the northern shore of Severnaya Bay with a single shot, sheltered in the rocks at a depth of 30 m.

          In the Soviet documents on the defense of Sevastopol, no information was found about the presence of Dora.

          By that time, about 300 shots had been fired from the Dora trunk, taking into account the range tests, and the barrel, due to heavy wear, was sent for repair to Essen. The carriage and all equipment, as mentioned above, was transported to the Thais station area, where the repaired barrel was later delivered. They also planned to transport the second Gustav cannon of the same type there. The offensive of the Red Army deprived the Germans of the opportunity to use heavy-duty guns. With the beginning of the breaking of the blockade of Leningrad, the guns were urgently evacuated to the rear.

          The Doura was used again during the Warsaw Uprising in September-October 1944. About 30 shells were fired at Warsaw. After the bloody suppression of the uprising, the guns were evacuated deep into Germany. At the end of the war, there were plans to use a super-powerful weapon for firing from the occupied French territory in London. For this purpose, H.326 three-stage rockets have been developed ....... From another source:
          "..... The data on the use of the supercannon near Sevastopol are contradictory. In his memoirs, Manstein claimed that Dora fired 80 shells at the Soviet fortress. The German cannon was soon spotted by Soviet pilots, who dealt a serious blow to its position and damaged the energy train ... ...........
          ....... In the morning of June 5, 1942, two diesel locomotives with a capacity of 1050 horsepower each rolled out this colossus with a total weight of 1350 tons to a sickle-shaped position and installed it to the nearest centimeter. The first shot consisted of a projectile weighing 7088 kilograms, two powder charges of 465 kilograms each, cartridges weighing 920 kilograms. The trunk lift gave it an elevation of 53 degrees. Especially for adjusting the firing, a little distance from the Dora, a balloon was lifted into the air. When fired, the service team hid in a shelter for several hundred meters. The shot caused the effect of a mini-earthquake. The crash during combustion in 6 milliseconds over 900 kilograms of gunpowder and the ejection of a 7-ton shell was simply monstrous - in the car for 3 kilometers, according to eyewitnesses, the dishes jumped. The rollback pressed the rail track 5 centimeters .......
          ............. The next day, the gun fired 7 times at the Molotov Fort, and then destroyed a large ammunition depot on the northern shore of Severnaya Bay, hidden in an adit at a depth of 27 m. [204] Incidentally, it aroused the discontent of the Fuhrer, who believed that the Dora should be used exclusively against heavily fortified fortifications. Within three days, the 672nd division used up 38 shells, 10 remained. Already during the assault, 5 of them were fired at Fort Siberia on 11 June - 3 hit the target, the rest fired on 17 June. Only on the 25th was a new ammunition delivered to the position - 5 high-explosive shells. Four were used for test shooting and only one was released towards the city .... From the memoirs of a follower A.I. Pokryshkin, Dora was used for shelling airfields near Iasi. After a long hunt for her, it was destroyed by our aircraft.

          It is said bitingly, but correctly. Anyway, the time of such monsters passed in WWI, there was their finest hour and there they would really make a splash: a self-propelled monster. And in WWII and, especially, WWII, they didn’t care much - maneuverability was almost everything.

      So after all, self-propelled guns are sitting in the rear more often in closed positions and firing from there, and therefore means at least their own in front when they crush their front ones they will begin to roll farthest!

        Then why would she need such a reservation? It seems to me that it might have been suitable for breaking the Mozhino line, but it was earlier, but the Germans decided this question much more elegantly. But in the 43rd year, the Germans stumbled because they needed equipment to fight medium tanks and not to destroy the fortresses with direct fire. Even an excellent artillery point of view, Ferdinand was too cumbersome for those years. Yes, and the Red Army was faced with the need for such systems only perhaps near Köneksberg, but as you know, they were also very well treated, my grandfather fought at Keneksberg in artillery on howitzers. Well, he said that many trunks were burned, but the city did fall.

    In my opinion, a completely unrealizable project. In particular, how many shots would the suspension withstand? Even if you use a bipod. Yes, and unlike other realized unrealized projects in Germany, this is an unusually terrible machine.
