Duster SUV for the Romanian Army

34
Some civilian designs eventually fall to the military court. In the automotive industry, this has happened more than once. So the Romanian automaker Dacia, part of the Renault group as a subsidiary, presented the Romanian military with several versions of its bestseller - the Duster crossover, which in Russia is known as Renault Duster (Renault Duster). This parquet SUV was lit up at military parades in 2013 and 2014, and in 2015, a version of this army crossover on a caterpillar was presented to journalists.

Dacia was founded in Romania in 1967 with direct technical assistance and support from the French company Renault. After the collapse of the socialist bloc, the enterprise returned to the fold of the company, thanks to which it was founded. In 1998, Dacia became a subsidiary of the Renault concern. Thanks to the transition to the release of modern and rapidly becoming popular models of budget cars (Logan, Sandero, Duster), the production of cars of the Romanian automaker has increased significantly.

The compact Renault Duster crossover (or, simply, the SUV) was presented to the public on December 8 2009. The car, which was created at the Renault Technocenter in Guiancourt, was introduced under the brand Dacia for the European market. From English Duster translates as "boot", that is, an SUV, or a car designed for dusty roads. Later, the market was presented version of the brand Renault, which were produced in Russia, Brazil, India and Colombia. The car was quite popular. Already in 2014, the millionth Duster was produced. Such an indicator was achieved in 4 of the year since the model was launched into mass production. Anniversary copy of SUV off the assembly line in Brazil. It is worth noting that the car enjoyed the greatest demand in the Russian market, where by that time more than 150 thousands of Renault Duster cars had been sold. In Russia, sales of this SUV outperformed the markets of France, Brazil, India and Germany, which together made up the top five countries most interested in automobiles.

Renault Duster, which for a long time remained in Russia one of the most accessible crossovers, is well known and enjoyed stable demand. However, in Romania, where Dacia is based, namely, under this brand car is sold in Europe, this SUV is considered almost a national treasure. The original version of this car was built specifically for the Day of National Unity. National Day of Romania is celebrated annually on December 1. In 2013, during the parade in Bucharest, in honor of this holiday, a special version of the popular compact crossover, Dacia Duster Army, was created by RTR engineers - Renault Technologie Roumanie.

The military version of Duster meets all NATO standards and was created for the needs of the Romanian army. This model has received body armor (from a rifle weapons), additional protection of the engine, transmission, fuel tank and rear differential. A removable winch appeared on the car, mounts designed to transport the car through the air, army headlights and two external sockets 12V and 24V. The version that was shown on the parade had a remote-controlled machine gun turret on the roof of the SUV. Also during the parade, the Duster versions for special services were shown: border, police and fire versions of the car.

Exactly one year later, 1 December 2014 in Bucharest showed another version of the car. This time, the public was shown a reconnaissance vehicle based on a pickup truck - the Dacia Duster Pickup. A new pickup truck is a product developed by the independent bodybuilding company Romturingia, which is located in the city of Arges. At the same time, the project, as before, was implemented with the direct support of the RTR engineering center. A special feature of this version was the installation in the back of a special lifting mast, equipped with a complex of reconnaissance equipment, which is able to observe at any time of the day and in any, even in difficult meteorological conditions. The new version of the reconnaissance vehicle based on the Duster is designed for rapid reaction forces, border guards, as well as army artillery units.

In 2015, a new model of an army SUV was introduced. This time Duster “laptezhnik” was presented to the public and journalists, which the Romanian engineers converted into caterpillars. If you advance in advance, such a crossover tractor is able to calmly drive on virtually any terrain. It is worth noting that such developments can be found in different countries. For example, in Russia, there are also variants of UAZ cars on tracked trucks and fully tracked. The new Duster was introduced to journalists precisely on tracked trucks. Its tracked modules are removable and designed to move only in the most difficult off-road conditions. The rest of the time they are replaced by ordinary wheels, on which the crossover moves, including at parades.

As journalists told Auto Mail.Ru, who tested the new version of the army SUV at the site of the Renault concern in Titus, camouflaged Duster with a 110-strong diesel engine under the hood, it seems as if weights were hung on the wheels. Inert tracked modules do not hasten to unwind, even if the driver gives full gas, and their resistance is so great that, hesitating when changing gears, you can instantly lose speed and elastic diesel engine, well known from serial models, will not correct the situation. At the same time, the car resembles a real tractor, by choosing a gear in advance and the speed you can easily overcome almost any track. Tracked Duster loves a preliminary calculation, but is able to take a trained driver almost everywhere.

In Romania today is a contract army, but the army Duster was clearly designed for inexperienced draftees, in which case it would be very easy to train automobile skills and all the off-road driving skills. In the cabin of the army version of this tracked vehicle, almost nothing has changed and everything is familiar: the steering wheel, three pedals, controls - everything is located as well as in the popular civilian crossover, even regular music was left in place. And in technical terms, the car is not much different from the civilian counterpart - the standard 1,5-liter diesel, three-mode four-wheel drive, mechanics. The main difference is the presence of the Blackout blackout control panel.

Photo auto.mail.ru

It is clear that this version of Duster is rather forced and conversion. Currently, there are many examples in the world of installing universal kits for tracked vehicles on vehicles, and this is mainly about utility frame SUVs that have a very good margin of safety. At the same time, in Romania, after the death of the automobile brand ARO, besides Duster, other passenger models of the off-road car did not remain at all. From here, such versions as the Duster snow blower or the Duster rural ambulance, as well as the Dacia Duster Army, which could be useful to the military, were born in this country. At the same time, Romanian engineers managed with purely improvised means.

The army Duster carries a spare tire on the roof, which again emphasizes that ordinary off-road wheels are still the main driver for the car. His tracked modules are just the same as the last argument when you have to operate a machine in difficult conditions - in wetlands or in snowy mountainous areas. When you change the location of the "pereobuvka" of the vehicle from the wheels to the tracks and back takes about 45 minutes. Constantly, the manufacturer does not recommend driving on tracks either.

In this case, the tracks are not the only element that can be removed if necessary. The winch and outer cage are also removable. When traveling on wheels, the outer frame may not be so necessary, but if a car in a tracked variant gets into the wilds, it may be useful. At the same time, the military version of the army under the bottom is constantly wearing - the engine, gearbox, fuel tank and rear gearbox were covered with additional armor.

Photo auto.mail.ru

In addition to the good traction of the tracked version, the relative simplicity and protection of the main components and assemblies from damage, the Duster-covered camouflage coloring also has other military talents. These include rigging attachments that allow you to transport a car, for example, under the belly of a helicopter or parachute with a parachute system. A sufficiently massive "hitch" allows you to take a light gun to the position, and instead of a "spare wheel" on the roof, a remote-controlled machine gun module may appear. If necessary, this crossover can even become a mobile source of energy, there are sealed sockets for 12B, 24B and 220B, which can supply almost any equipment that may be needed in the field.

The main feature of the army Duster, which can be found in an ordinary civilian saloon, is the Blackout system. This remote control with the toggle switches on the front panel is extremely simple in appearance and allows the driver to activate the blackout mode. When activated, this system instantly turns off lights, cabin lights and other bright devices. Only specialized army “spotlights” are burning, which are directed strictly down the road and therefore are not visible from the air. When using them, the driver can provide the vehicle with movement in the column, making life much easier using night vision devices.

In general, it can be noted that the Romanian engineers each year offer the military new versions of the Army Duster, while we are only talking about prototypes. The Romanian army did not accept this car into service, negotiations on the supply are continuing. So this military SUV rides so far only along the landfills and the streets of Bucharest during annual parades, awaiting the decision of its fate.

Interestingly, the clutch was removed from the 4x4 scheme? In theory, here you need a mechanically connected rear-wheel drive (due to the circuit).

Yes, you are right - "+++". Literally 2 days ago, a friend gave me a lift on his new device - "Renault-Duster" 2015 onwards. I did not offend him - I simply said that the car was normal. And I thought to myself - such "gypsy (ie Romanian) happiness" I would never buy for myself in my life. Moreover, for 14 thousand dollars. The red price of this tin is 5 thousand US rubles.
At my dacha there is an "Audi-100 S-3 Quadro" 1986 onwards. - this is a device, there is still no serious rust in the back, no one climbed into the engine, the exact mileage is not known. On the other hand, off-road "Audi" will beat this "Duster" at once, although it is a passenger car, and the Duster is a SUV. And in terms of ride comfort, the new "Duster" cannot be compared with the "German old woman" - she is 30 years old, and the sound insulation and smoothness of the ride are better than many new autos.

To a full-fledged army off-road vehicle "Duster" as "a turtle running to the moon." If the Roma needed an off-road vehicle for the army, then it would be necessary to revive the production of ARO jeeps from the period of "Soviet power". At least those were something like our "UAZ" in cross-country ability.
Briefly we can say - WHAT IN ROMANIA THE ARMY, SUCH AND JEPS FOR HER.

Don't tell my friend! There was recently an article about how the Romanians on the T-55 at the exercises tore the Americans on the "Abrams" .. So, apparently, according to NATO standards, the Romanians are not the same bad fighters ..

The "Romals" came to us together with the "Bosches" in June 1941. So our marines drove them almost to "Bucharest" during the famous raid. If not for the Germans, the "romals would have dropped out of the game" in the fall of 1941. Pancake warriors. The ancient Dacians may have been good warriors, even if they fought with the ancient Romans. But the fact is that modern "Romanians" have the same relationship to the Dacians as the "Italians" to the ancient Romans. The last "Roman" was Benito Musolini, who died on April 28, 1945.

Duster will pass 80t.km. in 1.5 years, along a undulating grader at a speed of 100 km / h or on broken asphalt at 60 km / h and the suspension will be like new, it will pass along the autumn clay behind the dumper and along the spring forest road behind the timber truck. Verified by personal experience. And Audi and other carts crawling on the belly will sort it out for bolts and nuts from such an operation for 20 tons. Km
And Duster is France, the car of which, half of Africa goes, with its "beautiful" roads. Yes, and modern Audi is now an expensive bucket.

Dear fzr1000. "Duster" is a cart that has been mowed under an SUV. Our "Niva" VAZ-2121 of the Soviet assembly is YES, there was a car that took Dakkar in 1976. As for the "Audi-Quadro C3", then you are not very good at cars. My old lady "model of 1982" is already 30 years old (1986 onwards), but she keeps going and going, and "there is no end in sight". Four-wheel drive allows her to do wonders and she will definitely go where the "Duster" is. Vaughn last "adventure" - in February he pulled out of the mud comrades who went hunting on the all-wheel drive "Nissan X-Trail" and sat down in the forest "on the bottom." On a country road and a highway, these cars are not comparable at all. The comfort and sound insulation in the old Audi is three orders of magnitude higher than that of the new Duster. My friend, who bought a 2015 Duster, is already complaining about "crickets" in the cabin, and this is in a car with a mileage of 8 thousand. It is difficult to call the interior decoration a design - the "Renault designers" panel is generally pulled out somewhere from the 80s years.

As for the French cars, on which, in your opinion, "half of Africa drives", then only there, in the former French colonies, they are not suitable for anything else. And it is certain that France is not a trendsetter in the automotive industry and its big three: "Dog", "Christmas tree" and "Pi ... a" (by the joking name of the logos of French brands) will never reach the "glory and history" of the big German troika - "Mersu", "Audi" and "BMW". By the way, in our family (my wife) there were representatives of the best French brand - Peugeot, 7 year old "406" and 8 year old "607". I am tortured to drag these "buckets of bolts" for services - all the problems with the electrics, then the hatch does not close, then it does not start, then the cliamt is buggy, then the doors will lock. None of the numerous German cars ("Mercy-W123,124,211" and "Audi-80 B-2, B-3, B-4", 100 / A6 C-3, C-4, C-5), on which we drove and continue to drive, we didn’t cause so many problems and didn’t pump out so much nerves and money as the "French car industry", from which we "washed our hands."

Well, objectively, the "Duster" will never live to be 30 years old, like my "Audi", which can travel for another 15-20 years. And this despite the fact that the body in "Audyukh" is still without holes, there are local foci of surface corrosion. Nobody fingered the engine. Four-wheel drive works like a clock. The mileage there is now something about 370 thousand, but in fact it is not known at all, as if it was twisted by the previous owners - I bought this car from "small border merchants" on occasion at an inexpensive price 6 years ago. The "small smugglers" hold such "Audyuhi" in high esteem, not even the "Niva" VAZ 21-21. What is "Duster" there.

That the cars of the 80-90s were better than the current ones is a fact. Modern aluminum Germans - buckets with aluminum bolts, for example, on x6 a guarantee of 1 year !!!!! and this is a car for 5000000 !!!! rubles!
And about Pussies, Birds, and Pi .... sec (the French we call it that :) and there is nothing to say ....

kostella85 - absolutely right. The trouble of the modern car industry (without exception) is "in pursuit of the client." The machines have lost the entire margin of safety of their "grandmothers" and "great-grandmothers". The Germans have passed very strongly in terms of quality, but the truth is that the automakers of other countries, which were previously outsiders in the auto industry, also slipped even lower. The goal of modern "dealers from the auto industry" is to make the car as cheap as possible by reducing material consumption, using cheap steels and other materials. They are trying to compensate for the lack of "safety factor" with some nonsense electronic "bells and whistles". Well, what's the use of that new trough that needs to be repainted in 5-7 years, the motor of which may not live up to 150 thousand km. nor can it be overhauled because it is "disposable." It is a pity that "the days when talented engineers of the correct orientation (like women) were at the head of auto concerns, and the cars themselves were made of cast iron and steel, were gone."

This is where it is necessary to decide - for Nata or for Romania this "shushpanzer". Last spring I was worried about pulling these Dusters out of the mud, this spring I will have to again. Well, he does not ride in a wheeled version on clay.

Wow, so what, you can do that too !? belay
Then I propose for our Ministry of Defense my own project of similar Lada-HREN vehicles (X-RAY night raid).
The basis is a serial x-ray (import substitution !!), a tower from BMP-3 is installed on it (good firepower with acceptable dimensions), protection is represented by the "Shtora" complex and anti-cumulative screens from a mesh-chain stretched over a steel frame (optionally, you can replace with nets from armored beds or standard blocks of dynamic protection). Better cross-country ability is provided by replacing standard wheels with Komaz wheels, as well as adding a dump bucket (can be replaced with a mine sweep). A powerful searchlight has been added for operations at night.
A stylish red star is depicted on board the car to indicate state ownership. wassat
I think it is obvious to everyone that this is a very promising project, vital to our army.
At the same time, I realize that this project is not yet perfect and therefore I will be glad to any practical advice and comments. laughing
