Armored vehicles of the Patrol program: protected transport for the Ministry of Internal Affairs
KAMAZ-43501 / 43502 Patrol
The first models of equipment created under the Patrol program were presented a year and a half ago at the Interpolitex 2014 exhibition. One of the variants of this machine was presented by Asteys CJSC, known for its developments in the field of protection systems and equipment. The specialists of this company took as a basis for their armored car the existing KAMAZ-43501 chassis, on which they mounted the original armored corps and all the necessary additional equipment. The result was the emergence of a new armored car, which was proposed for arming various units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The KAMAZ-43501 “Patrol” armored car is intended to carry up to 10 people or the corresponding cargo on various roads or off-road. The hull design provides protection for the crew and passengers from shelling. When developing the project, designers had to take into account some additional requirements, for example, to reduce the size and weight of the machine. Such requirements, among other things, led to some modifications to the base chassis aimed at reducing its length and height.
Introduced in 2014, the Patrol prototype was based on a modified KAMAZ-43501 chassis. This product has a wheel formula 4х4, and is also equipped with a Cummins ISBe 6.7-250 diesel engine with an HP 261 horsepower associated with a nine-speed ZF9S1310 gearbox. When remaking into a base for an armored car, the chassis retained the dependent suspension on the basis of bridges and semi-elliptical springs.
The KamAZ-43501 “Patrol” armored car received an original armored hull assembly with a total habitable volume that combines the driver’s cab and the troop compartment. Due to the specific layout of the base chassis, the Patrol housing is characterized by a relatively low hood and a relatively high floor of the habitable compartment, which gives the car a distinctive appearance. The body of the armored car is assembled by welding. The basis of this unit are sheets of armor steel A3, having the necessary shapes and sizes. Bulletproof glass is also provided. According to the developer, in the basic configuration, the body of the new armored vehicle complies with the 5 class of domestic protection standards.
The entire crew of the prospective armored car is located in the total habitable volume. The driver and the commander are in front of the hull and have a set of equipment necessary to control the machine. For the landing, nine folding chairs are installed at the sides of the aft hull. The driver and the commander have their own side doors, and in addition, over their places there are hatches in the roof. It was offered to get into the troop compartment through the right side door (behind the commander's door), as well as through the single-door aft. In the roof of the troop compartment also hatched.
The Patrol armored vehicle, introduced in 2014, had no weapons of its own. At the same time, in the windows of the troop compartment were embrasures with movable flaps, designed to use personal weapons the crew. In the future, the machine could get any combat module with the required characteristics.
The first version of the KAMAZ-43501 “Patrol” armored vehicle had the full mass at the level of 12,7 t. Due to the redesign of the base chassis design, the company-developer managed to slightly reduce the overall dimensions of the armored vehicle. In particular, the wheelbase was reduced to 3,67 m, and the floor of the cargo compartment, as stated, received a lower height compared to the base chassis in the original configuration. With the available indicators of mass and engine power, the maximum speed on the highway was set at the level of 100 km / h.
Having a relatively high performance that can provide a solution to the tasks, the first version of the armored vehicle “Patrol” from the company “Asteys” had some problems. One of the main ones was considered the use of imported components, associated with the risk of interruption of supplies for political reasons. Thus, it became necessary to recycle the project using domestic components and assemblies. In addition, during such an upgrade, it was decided to change some features of the armored vehicle.
The updated version of the Patrol armored vehicle was presented at the Army-2015 exhibition, and then at the Interpolitech-2015 showroom. The goals and objectives of the armored car remained the same - transportation and protection of people, patrols, reconnaissance, etc. In order to improve some characteristics and general convenience of operation, noticeable changes were made to the initial project, which reflected both on the internal nodes and on the appearance of the car.
The largest innovation of the updated project was the used chassis. The updated Patrol is based on the KAMAZ-43502 chassis, which has some differences from the KAMAZ-43501. It was also decided to abandon the imported engine, replacing it with a domestic KamAZ-740.652-260 diesel engine with an 260 horsepower. This made it possible to preserve the main characteristics, but to exclude the influence of foreign supplies.
The overall layout of the body of the KamAZ-43502 “Patrol” armored car remained the same, but the design of this unit was modified. In particular, the basic level of protection has dropped to the 4 class. At the same time, additional booking modules were proposed, with which the protection of the armored car could be brought to the 6А class. Also offers several options for installing doors. On the body can be mounted two, three or four side doors, as well as swing aft. There are hatches in the roof. The configuration of such means for getting inside the machine can be determined by the customer.
Inside the armored hull with a volume of 12 cubic meters, it was possible to place the seats for the 10 paratroopers. If it is necessary to transport any goods into the habitable compartment, a weight of up to 1500 kg can be placed. It is possible to tow a trailer with a full weight up to 5 t. In terms of its dimensions, the armored car does not differ from other vehicles of this class: the length of the 7,15 is m, the width is 2,5 is m and the height is 3,1.
The used powerplant allows the armored car to reach speeds of up to 100 km / h. Power reserve exceeds 1000 km. It is possible to overcome a ford up to 1,75 m in depth, a ditch 0,6 m wide and climb to a wall 0,5 m in height. For additional tasks, the machine is equipped with a hydraulic winch with a force up to 6000 kgf.
Later, the third version of the armored car Patrol was created, which is a modernized version of the second. It differs in some details that have a significant impact on the survivability of the machine itself and its crew. For example, certain measures were taken to protect the crew from explosive devices. In addition, ergonomics of the armored car has undergone some modifications.
It was reported that in 2015, Asteys built a prototype of an updated armored car and presented it for testing. Over the next few months it was planned to conduct the full range of necessary checks, after which the Ministry of the Interior was to draw conclusions and decide on the future of the proposed equipment. New reports on the progress of the tests have not yet appeared, the decision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs also remains unknown.
KAMAZ-53949 "Patrol-A"
At the end of 2014, information appeared on the possible appearance of an alternative to Asteys armored cars. A few months earlier, the Kama Automobile Plant presented its new armored vehicle, the Kamaz-53949 Typhoon, which was originally intended for the armed forces. At this time, the defense industry faced foreign sanctions and a sharp reduction in the range of available imported components, which could adversely affect the course of several projects.
The design of the Typhoonenok armored car uses a significant number of imported components and assemblies. In particular, it is the foreign engine and transmission that form the basis of its power plant. Bridges and tires were also supplied by foreign companies. In this connection, information appeared in the press about possible problems with the mass production of such equipment and its subsequent operation in the army. The result of such rumors were reports about the possible renaming of the project “Typhoon” in “Patrol-A” and the subsequent proposal of this machine to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Such assumptions have not yet received sufficient confirmation. So, in the autumn of last year, representatives of the company-developer argued that the new armored car should go into series in 2018, despite all the possible problems. In this case, it was really planned to offer the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Armored car KAMAZ-53949 "Typhoon" / "Patrol-A" is a protected off-road vehicle, proposed for use in patrolling the area, escorts convoy, reconnaissance and other tasks. The body of the machine is designed to protect the crew from firing of small arms and explosive devices.
The KAMAZ-53949 armored vehicle is completed with a Cummins 6ISBe 350 diesel engine with HP power 350. and an Allison automatic six-speed hydromechanical transmission. It should be noted that these particular features of the project are considered to be the main disadvantage and can represent a certain risk in the current international situation. The chassis of the car is built on the basis of axles with hydropneumatic suspension.
“Typhoon” / “Patrol-A” received a bonnet body with a single habitable volume. The body is welded and equipped with a combined protection consisting of metal and ceramic elements. Such armor corresponds to 3 level of the standard STANAG-4569 and allows you to protect the crew from armor-piercing rifle bullets. The hull is also equipped with anti-mine protection corresponding to 3a and 3b levels - blasting up to 8 kg of TNT under the wheel or under the bottom. The body is equipped with bulletproof glass, providing a good overview and protecting the crew from shelling. Embrasures in doors or windows are not provided.
10 seats, including the driver's seat, are installed inside the habitable housing compartment. There are four seats, mounted forward in the direction of travel, as well as six, installed at the sides in the rear of the hull. In connection with the need to protect the crew from the effects of the energy of explosions, special “anti-mine” chairs with appropriate safety belts are used. For landing in the car is proposed to use four side and one stern door. Also in the roof of the hull there are several hatches.
With a total mass at the level of 14 T, the KAMAZ-53949 armored car can transport up to 2 T of cargo. In this case, the machine is able to accelerate to 105 km / h and overcome various obstacles. The dimensions of the armored car correspond to the size of other vehicles of a similar class. The length of the order of 6,5 m, width about 2,5 m, height - less than 2,7 m.
The first sample of the KamAZ-53949 armored car was demonstrated back in the 2013 year. In the future, this technique was shown several times at various exhibitions of weapons and military equipment. According to the latest data, the armored car passes the necessary tests, the results of which can be put into service and put into series. Release of the first production machines of this type is planned in the 2018 year.
At the end of 2014, it was reported that because of the widespread use of imported components, the Typhoon armored car might not get into the Russian armed forces. In this regard, there was unconfirmed information about the possible offer of such equipment to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Among other things, it was reported that the armored car had already been presented to the commander-in-chief of the internal troops. However, further detailed news about the project “Typhoon” / “Patrol-A” have not been received. As before, the main reports about this car concern construction in the interests of the armed forces.
