GFF4 Grizzly
The Grizzly high-security armored vehicle was developed by the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann concern (KMW) to meet the needs of the Bundeswehr for peacekeeping missions around the world. The first order for the car was placed in June 2007. Grizzly is based on an IVECO Trakker wheeled truck chassis (6х6) with a combat weight of 25 and a large body with a volume of more than 17 m³. The use of an IVECO chassis improves economic efficiency and simplifies logistics and service at any deployment base in the world. The car is protected by armor and has a special hull design providing excellent protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mines and direct shelling of the machine. Grizzly occupies a niche between the capabilities of the Dingo-12.5 2-ton armored vehicle and the Boxer 33-ton armored troop-carrier.
Grizzly is capable of carrying payload tons of 4, which is quite enough to accommodate fully equipped infantrymen before 10 and at that time can be deployed on A400M tactical transport aircraft Super Hercules. The driver and crew are replaced in a special armored capsule, which provides optimal protection against the effects of improvised explosive devices. In addition, KMW has applied a number of additional stiffeners to protect the crew from injury in a rollover accident. The car is driven by a diesel engine with an 450 horsepower, which allows you to develop maximum speed on the highway in 90 km per hour and a cruising range in 700 km, equipped with self-locking differentials, an automatic tire pressure control system. The engine and gearbox are also equipped with ballistic protection. Corresponds to the protection class 4.
Grizzly is provided in several modifications: an armored personnel carrier for the transportation of troops, a medical armored personnel carrier and a command vehicle. Its modular design also makes it possible to develop light versions of the 4x4 or, on the other hand, heavy versions of the 8x8 with an increased payload.
On the roof it is possible to install a console with remote control of armament, there are fire extinguishing systems, air conditioning, ventilation and air filtration. An autonomous source of energy and life support systems allow you to be in the car for several days.
Among other equipment, the Grizzly is equipped with an electric generator of more than 20 kW, which provides engine independent ventilation and air conditioning. This helps to reduce the noise level when using the machine for combat operations in urban environments, improves fuel efficiency and provides additional crew safety in the event of failure of the main engine while in remote areas at extremely high temperatures.
The main customer is the German Ministry of Defense represented by the procurement agency (Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung - BWB). The total number of machines planned for the armies of Italy and Germany is 700 pieces.
