Mars probe hovered in orbit

As it became known on the night of November 9, the Russian interplanetary spacecraft Phobos-Grunt was put into orbit, where it hovered without starting its flight to Mars. For the space industry of our country, this flight was a long-awaited and very significant event, because Russia has not launched such devices since the 90-s. Despite all the attempts of Roscosmos specialists to determine the cause of the failure of the main engine of the device, they cannot resolve the problem.

The cause of a malfunction in the apparatus can be either a software error or failure of the sensors responsible for the spatial orientation of the probe. If it is a matter of software, then the situation is reparable, if the cause of the breakdown lies in problems with orientation, then the flight of the vehicle will end very soon with a fall to Earth, before it begins.

Recall that in the past, at least two probes sent to Mars did not reach the planet due to the loss of spatial orientation, and several other devices lost control due to software malfunctions. However in stories cosmonautics was a lot of successful flights, accompanied by problems associated with spatial orientation. For example, not so long ago, the Japanese Hayabus apparatus returned to Earth and not only returned, but also took with it samples of soil from an asteroid. The Japanese probe repeatedly lost radio contact with the Earth, it repeatedly had problems with engines, sometimes it began to tumble at random, but Japanese specialists coped with all abnormal situations successfully.

However, according to experts, the chances of the Russian Martian probe is not too much. For example, the major general of the reserve, the former chief specialist of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on space, Vladimir Uvarov, is sure that Phobos-Grunt is already lost. At the same time, arguing about the reasons for the failure of the launch of the probe, this expert says that the flaw in the device was laid a long time ago, most likely under the old leadership of Roskosmos.

Pilot-cosmonaut, Hero of Russia Yuri Baturin is also not optimistic in assessing the prospects for Phobos-Grunt. The astronaut regrets the failure of the expedition. At the same time, the Hero of Russia is sure that there is nothing surprising in this situation. He argues that the project was prepared carelessly and hastily, whereas astronautics requires a leisurely approach, carrying out all the necessary flight design tests. Baturin sees the main reason for the failure in the fact that our country is traditionally inconsistent and too hastily in matters of astronautics.

However, it should be noted that such a rush not only brought our astronautics to trouble and even tragedy, but allowed our country to launch the first artificial satellite and the first person into space, always leading the domestic space industry to new achievements. Therefore, we will not dramatize the situation and judge our space specialists too harshly - they continue to be the best in the world, strengthening the status of Russia as the space power No. XXUMX in the world.

What do we lose with the device? In the event of the final loss of the apparatus, Roskosmos will receive compensation for it in the amount of 1,2 billion rubles. That is the figure stipulated in the agreement between the department and the insurers. The head of Roscosmos claims that this is the real value of the probe itself.
Lev Green, Director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences: “1,2 billion rubles is not so expensive for such projects. Projects of this class at NASA or at the European Space Agency cost approximately 400 million euros. ”

At the same time, the design of the device cost the department several times more expensive - 5 billion rubles, but these costs, at least, will not be completely useless, because the design documentation for the project has not flown into orbit, and with a certain desire you can build a similar device again, taking into account the shortcomings or errors that led to the failure of the probe.

So, "Phobos-Grunt", most likely, will fall to the Earth. Should earthlings fear its debris?

The fact is that rumors spread around the world that the device was filled with radioactive fuel. This information is completely untrue. The probe is not equipped with radioisotope generators using plutonium as an energy source. Therefore, Roscosmos experts assure that earthlings can be absolutely calm. The uncontrollable device does not pose any risk for earthlings. And a certain amount of radioactive cobalt contained in the structural elements will not affect the background radiation at the site of the apparatus’s fall, which may not take place at all, since most likely the majority of the apparatus, together with its toxic fuel, will burn without even reaching the dense layers of the atmosphere. .

Somehow we have not been doing well with space lately. "strengthening the status of Russia as the world's No. 1 space power" - it is said loudly. We are still the first, but this status is not clearly strengthened. At least keep it.

What is the problem actually ... we need to buy from amers .. a probe .. like everything else that we are going to buy over the hill ... We drain everything ... we come ...

The latest problems in the space industry are not the subversive work of the West and not an accident, you do not need to reassure yourself. The old military acceptance system, for example, is extremely unable to cope with its work, allowing for large losses in quality. The same thing, I think, with us in the space industry. In the engineering industries, Russia is experiencing a systemic crisis, when the old economic system collapsed due to the inability to live, the new one came, and the organizational infrastructure of the old one remains and is trying to be used.

Of course they will beat me, but our "sworn friends" over the hill have succeeded much more than us in the development of quality control systems. We ought to learn from the bourgeoisie, take what will be useful to us, not forgetting, of course, that all the same Soviet unions are flying, and not Pendos shuttles. Approach the problem carefully, not copy, but use.

Shuttles fly because it is cheaper to use Progress as transporters, so why what and amers loot can count. Moreover, so far Russia and Ukraine are dumping on the market for the delivery of goods using conversion alterations (not always and not everywhere of course) in the end they get a low cost per kilogram. When our industry runs out of this resource, the price will skyrocket, then shuttles and zeniths will be competitive.

Shuttles can already be said no, there is no industry in America that created them. Moreover, it is strange that they are purchasing our rocket engines for their new heavy missile

Yes, there is the whole industry, the Yankees, unlike our sales of scrap metal, do not suffer. It’s just that they cut the budget every year, and the shuttle is an extremely expensive pleasure.

shuttles then remained, but they still cannot build the same ones; it’s easier to start developing a new one.
Their main problem is the lack of developments in heavy missiles, except for Saturn

With which they can not build them? The fact that they didn’t have a rocket with a thrust like that of Energy didn’t stop them from launching shuttles, they somehow managed. And the fact that ours made the engine the best in the world of this class is of course honored and praised by them, but this does not mean that they are worthless.

Just their engine at Saturn exceeded ours, but for inexplicable reasons it was closed together with the Apollo project. I'm talking about the fact of the purchase of our engines for new missiles

No, my friend, the question is not in the quality control system.
So on the left, I did the development (I’m both the developer, the technologist, the programmer and the Chief Constructor, .. I do it according to Western standards, .. I enjoy it). Two mediocre guys are replicating the development at the customer and do it without any interference and a lot of control over them.
We tested and tested at the customer’s customer — our quality is higher than that of a well-known foreign company (.. and cheaper)
Now open any documentation in our research institute.
You can show it without problems - here is unprofessionalism, .. here is a bunch of thoughtlessness, starting with a key factor - the initial statement of the problem, here we have a classic g * subcode (there is such a term for programmers) ..
But the focus is not in technology or qualifications.
The question is that there are two parties in the research institute - the first one is at the top - of celestials, who have almost all the resources and rights, and a party at the middle level where they actually secretly decide between themselves - "this project is easier to fail than to do." And in general, we have a structure of a multi-section chicken coop

And now, if we need to start correcting the situation with us, we - the Deputy General for Science just need to be kicked out and put a realistic condition before the rest in these parties - that if you continue all these games and continue an endless series of failures, they will simply be hanged for yay ** - I know from practice - this is the only thing that brings this audience to life

The problem is that the space industry and its achievements have been the subject of total idolatry in our ideology and culture almost all the time. This led this industry away from any kind of objective analysis and corresponding correction. The era of the technocratic model of development and super-bright achievements ended somewhere in the 60s with the departure of the founders. Were there after this achievements - yes, there were, this industry still had many talents and still attracted the best youth. But when I arrived there in 1983, I felt the wild horror of the contradiction - education - of Bauman, that is, like Korolev, Yangel - and around - some kind of semi-religious bureaucratic dance-rituals with a poor attachment to real tasks and the logic that dictated by these tasks. Then the situation was saved for a long time by inclusions of talented people with high self-motivation. But even then it should be said that the industry has degenerated into a giant self-looping bureaucratic bubble. By the way - the Americans already understood this then and helpfully offered us, in addition to Afghanistan, a space race.
And now we have here some devilish mixture of antediluvian rules, strange dogmas, written and unwritten regulations, the composition of the leadership (in our research institute - pull from Muscovites, the local elite, or just from endless sweaters of pants ..) - but the center of the problems, of course it is a bouquet of leading "celestials" looking over their heads and clearly inadequate to the capabilities and tasks of their divine position.

All electronics are now plopping cross-eyed from their own silicon, and they, as you know, are contaminated with extraneous impurities. Well, how can you rely on this? !!! I was dumbfounded about ten years ago when I found out that the electronic filling for our combat aircraft is made in Indonesia! If this continues, trynsdek Roscosmos and my country's priority in space! I frankly hurt from our failures !!!

Baturin sees the main reason for the failure in the fact that our country is traditionally inconsistent and unnecessarily hasty in cosmonautics.

Of course it’s a shame that such money was thrown into the ballot box ... But if you hear about our cosmos, even if it is unsuccessful, then you understand that something else is working and is being created for us! All is not lost. It would have been worse if nothing had been heard at all. Then it would definitely be - a kayuk ...

    From the latest news:
"The US military confirmed that Phobos revolves around the Earth, but is at the same time out of the tracking zone of Russian stations at the Baikonur cosmodrome. In addition, the device performed a certain maneuver, for some reason raising its orbit by 350 meters."
