Upgraded T-64E, new life of an old tank

T-64 - one of the main tanks Soviet Union, story the creation begins with the 60-s in the Kharkiv Design Bureau, began to be produced from the middle of the 60-x together with other main tanks - T-64, T-62, and T-55. Entered service in the tank divisions of the USSR Armed Forces in the year 1969 as T-64A.

History T-64A

The main idea of the appearance of the tank appeared back in the distant 1946 year, with the beginning of work on the creation of a constructively new diesel engine, which was soon created by the designs of the design office No. XXUMX. Until his incarnation in steel, the tank was called "Object 75".

"Sixty-four" out of the gates of the Kharkov plant them. Malysheva with 1963, the 24, for the year in a row, approximately all 5440 tanks of this series were launched.
After the tragic events for the Soviet Union, the plant for the production of armored vehicles, which produced the T-64A, became the property of an independent state of Ukraine. The “foreign” tank immediately ceased to interest the military department of Russia, and the tanks “worked” with training machines, where they were simply worn out, and recently, in the 2011 year, it was decided to send the machines to re-melt.
In Ukraine, due to the ownership of the base for the manufacture and repair of T-64A, they approached the solution of the problem from the other side, and it was decided to carry out a complete modernization of the armored vehicles of this project. This will allow not only to upgrade its military fleet of vehicles, but also to sell T-64E to poor countries in small batches.

Modernization of T-64E

The main idea of modernization is the complete replacement of the engine, its place will be taken by a modern, economical diesel engine 5TDFE with HPN XXUMX power.
Ukraine has not shown a modernized tank for a long time, and practically no information on the work carried out, but quite recently the tank was shown in public, he took part in the parade, "lit up" at an exhibition in the UAE.

The main differences from the latest modifications of the series of the same T-64V can be seen with the naked eye. The tank looked like a modern khaki combat vehicle. Additional protection is evenly distributed on the tank body, the frontal part looks powerful and reliable.

The sides of the tank are also reliably protected by protective units of the “Knife-2” type, both square and rectangular.
The protection design is composed of knife-2 and Kontakt-1 protection from both sides of the tank and is implemented in a grid design - a fairly inexpensive and very common type of armor. The main advantage of this method is the small weight characteristics of the body armor.
It is also clearly seen from the side how significantly the structural component of the tower has been changed. It is possible that the tower has the ability to store ammunition tower armament.
We now turn to the consideration of changes affecting weapons and auxiliary equipment.
Let us pay special attention to the appearance of the sight of a panoramic view with a thermal imager, which significantly improved the use of the tank in combat operations. A very good place to install indicates a qualitative approach to the modernization of the tank.
The tank's armament is remotely controlled, consisting of a 125 mm caliber cannon and two modules - a twin automatic cannon GSH-23, 12.7 mm NSVT machine gun with automatic grenade launcher AH-17.

Upgraded T-64E, new life of an old tank

Installing weapons modules and a rotation range will allow the T-64 to take part in battles in the city. Installed weapons will allow the tank to cope with both low-flying targets and enemy armored personnel carriers.
In general, we can say that the T-64E has all the makings to compete with another modification of the T-64-BM tank named Bulat. But we must bear in mind that “Bulat” is already successfully supplied to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the main supplier of Kharkov KBM is a fairly well-known manufacturer of armored vehicles, which may mean that Ukraine may not see this development in its armed forces. However, I want to note the professional approach of developers to create a modernized T-64E.
Finally, I would like to note that in order to successfully advance this modernization in the arms market, there is not enough complex for suppressing electronic signals from the CEEP to fight the enemy’s helicopters.

There is always a choice, but the market niche for tanks of the "Oplot" class is now being processed by used American and German equipment, a little by the Chinese and Tagil T-90S, where it is very difficult to break through with low lobbying opportunities by the state. The only success of Ukroboronexport is the Thai contract (although it will also load the plant for several years), but such upgrades of outdated equipment are also within the power of tank repairs, which I personally know quite efficiently in Ukraine. machines. And it doesn't just work, its modernization projects are really very interesting.

I agree if they just stop dying, because modernization is the only penny that they can now get, and they just have money to develop fundamentally new machines, and frankly speaking, they don’t have the strength.

Somewhere like that. The plant is now trying to recruit people for new contracts that are, and there is some kind of funding, but no one believes it. I personally know the young and smart ones who, after the Pakistani contract, were kicked out of the reduction plant and they no longer believe anyone.

With all due respect, but Tagil has always been the most technically and innovatively backward factory in the USSR (against the Leningrad, Omsk and Kharkov), I hope now something is changing for the better.

on the T-64 model that comes with the magazine "Russian Tanks" on both sides there are three rectangular canisters, as it were, but not canisters?
the magazine is silent about them, in another reference identity is not found, who knows, tell me what it is?
they are separated from each other, i.e. there are gaps between them, the first above the first rink, the tray at the middle of the tower

These are the guards, which during the battle unfold at an angle of 90 degrees to the side for additional protection against cumulative ammunition.

Was there even tandem ammunition? And anyway, if you have any link on them could you throw off? It hurts a little I know from them.

I don’t know about tamndems, and any even the most lousy screen from the cumulative one saves just fine, and they certainly were.

I just do not quite understand the question. So yes, these are shields that were parted to the side and at 30-35 degrees maneuvering angles provided shielding of the projection of the tank hull from cumulative ammunition, I thought about the elements of the knife-2 side screens like on the Oplot-M tank they really look like canisters but this is the only DZ which works on tandem ammunition.

I just didn’t quite understand who and what level of automation controls his auxiliary weapons. It seemed like the anti-aircraft machine gun was remotely controlled by the commander, and now there is still a 30mm cannon and grenade launcher, are the commander’s duties too much, I recall the pre-war multi-turret and multi-gun tanks in which the commander could not cope with the aiming of the gun, firing and the actual command at the same time.

twin automatic gun GSh-23, 12.7 mm NSVT machine gun

Interestingly, they rotate separately, or only together with the tower

most likely they rotate separately since the tower has a small angle of fire for air targets.

I liked the approach, the only remark is that instead of the GS-23, the artillery unit ZU-23-2 would be more appropriate (more reliable, long-range, more powerful). But this is IMHO.

Z.Y. And if we put such a memory, then the detection system (even the simplest) of anti-aircraft targets would not be set at all.
