NATO aircraft will receive Russian air defense to protect against mobile anti-aircraft missile systems
Experts from the US military completed testing the Spanish-Russian system «MANTA». It was manufactured as a result of the successful work of Rosoboronexport and Indra, and after tests that were carried out by NATO specialists, the system was fully prepared for operation on aircraft.
During the exercise "EMBOW XIII", held at the test rocket center in French Biscaross from September 19 to October 14 2011, MANTA was mounted on the C-212 aircraft and successfully managed to repel all the attacks of the missiles with the infrared seeker.
In total, from May to September 2011, the MANTA system more than 130 was tested and spent in flight before 20 hours. It was also carried out around 500 launches. In addition, each test conducted was carried out while simultaneously firing several types of MANPADS. This characterizes the system as not requiring the identification of the type of rocket, since it itself emits a multichannel dual-band laser beam. This beam is capable of literally “blinding” a rocket from any IK-GOS.
MANTA works in automatic mode: the electron-optical system monitors the launch of the rocket and directs the laser beam at it with high-energy characteristics.
The speed of the system is extremely high. This makes it possible to protect the aircraft even when launching several missiles. This property is most relevant in the fight against terrorists who practice attacking airplanes from shelters - with dense fire, which guarantees the destruction of objects. At the same time, the MANTA system had the opportunity to prevent the penetration of modern mobile anti-aircraft missile systems with a high density of fire.
Initially, MANTA was designed to be installed on tanker aircraft and transport aircraft. But in the very near future, Indra plans to modify the system and adapt it to counter attacks from the enemy and on helicopters.
