Love at first shot
The Army-2015 exhibition, which was held this year on the basis of the Patriot park, which was recently created by the Ministry of Defense, in the Moscow region should be one of the most significant events for the national defense industry. It is enough to say that several dozen foreign delegations plan to attend the event, and their heads of military departments will head it.
In addition to the exhibition program, in which not only almost all the enterprises of the Russian defense industry are represented, but also some of the foreign ones, visitors will receive demonstrations, flights of flight teams and much more.
Traditionally, one of the most interesting and informative expositions at the Army-2015 exhibition belongs to the High-precision Complexes holding, which is part of the Rostec State Corporation. It represents a wide range of products ranging from small weapons and ending with anti-tank and anti-aircraft missile systems.
Landmark for "Beretta"
The Tula Instrument Engineering Design Bureau, which is part of the holding, is among the world companies developing and producing small arms, including the unique one, rightfully called the LEADER.
At the exhibition “Army-2015”, the product range of the PCU opens the automatic two-medium special (ADS), which is capable of effectively hitting the enemy, both on land and under water, thanks to the use of a millimeter X-cell caliber 5,45 cartridge. ADS was interested in both domestic special forces and foreign buyers.
In addition to the two-medium machine gun, the KBP presents two large-caliber (mm 12,7) sniper rifles - OSV-96 and VKS. It is noteworthy that the built-in “bullpup” VKS, also known as VSSK “Exhaust”, thanks to the use of an integrated device for silent and flameless shooting, in other words, a silencer, and subsonic cartridges can almost silently hit even well-armored targets at a distance of 600 meters
Currently VSK and OSV-96, also called the “Burglar,” are being purchased for arming the Russian special forces units, including the FSB Special Purpose Center, as well as, according to some information, the newly created Special Operations Command of the Russian Defense Ministry.
Another large-caliber product in the exposition of the Instrument Engineering Design Bureau is the AGN-30 30-millimeter automatic grenade launcher, which is easily installed on various armored vehicles or even conventional vehicles, not to mention the traditional use of a special machine, and in exceptional cases with hands. It is worth noting that this model, replacing the legendary AGS-17, is not only supplied to the Ministry of Defense and internal troops, but is also exported. So far, of its class products, only AGS-30 combines both firepower and mobility, allowing it to be used high in the mountains.
Against the background of the “big brothers”, the GSH-18 pistol developed by outstanding gunsmith designers Vasily Gryazev and Arkady Shipunov, in whose scheme instead of the traditional locking with a bias of the barrel, invented by John Browning, is used to lock the barrel.
Thanks to this technical solution, a pistol, weighing a little more than a half-kilogram without ammunition, turned out to be very ergonomic and easy to use at the shortest possible distances. In many ways, this is why GSH-18 is, according to some experts, one of the best combat pistols in the world.
It should be noted that after the launch of the release of the GSH-18, the Austrian and Italian gunsmiths were interested in the locking scheme with a twist of the barrel. Currently, the Stormo’s Beretta RX-4 pistol line, which is in constant demand on the international market for law enforcement and special-purpose units, also operates under the barrel locking scheme.
At the same time, GSH-18 has a number of significant advantages over its Italian counterpart, as visitors of the exhibition will be able to see.
Tanks won't pass Drones will not fly
On the world arms market, the High-Precision Systems holding company is especially well-known as a manufacturer and supplier of the Kornet anti-tank missile systems. These anti-tank systems are in service in almost two dozen countries and continue to be actively purchased.
In fact, the "Cornet" is a universal system that can fight not only with armored vehicles, but also with various fortifications, helicopters, and even such complex targets as UAVs. During the parade on Red Square, dedicated to the 70 anniversary of the Great Victory, these anti-tank missile systems installed on the chassis of Tiger armored vehicles passed through the columns of the latest Russian military equipment.
As the experience of armed conflicts has shown, the Tula “Kornets” have coped with complex goals in the form of tanks and armored vehicles with good security. Due to the small size of the ATGM, it is easy to transfer the calculation from two people even over very rough terrain. But the effective sighting system with thermal imaging and night channels allows you to hit targets on the battlefield at any time of day, regardless of weather conditions.
An important feature of the “Kornet” is that, unlike its foreign “classmates,” anti-tank missiles are not equipped with a self-guided head, but on the launcher there is an aiming complex, as well as an automatic tracking, without human intervention, leading the target and transmitting commands to the missiles. The operator of the complex need only take a tank or another armored vehicle to escort and click on the launch, then the ATGM will do everything on its own.
Moreover, nowadays Cornets are supplied with a single integrated battery management system - a fire platoon, thanks to which the commander not only assigns target designation to real-time calculations, but also distributes targets, selects the order of their destruction, etc.
The warhead of the rocket allows you to overcome dynamic protection, and also due to the implementation of the regime, when at intervals of a fraction of a second two missiles are launched on the same target, and to hit armored vehicles with a complex of active protection. KAZ knocks down the first, but the second freely passes and destroys the enemy's tank.
Along with Kornet, foreign customers are greatly interested in the upgraded Metis ATGM. Of course, with the new sighting system and missiles it is no longer the product that was put into service at the end of the 70's. But its main attractiveness lies in the same small dimensions: the launch canister no longer than one meter in length, the installation itself weighs a little more than ten kilograms.
The anti-tank missile system "Chrysanthemum-S", recently adopted by the Army, is now actively being supplied to units and subunits. By the way, the first batch of these cars last year entered the Crimea.
Thanks to the use of the Chrysanthemum radar station for detecting targets, it is able to find and effectively hit not only armored facilities on the battlefield, but also helicopters in difficult weather conditions, as well as using different means of masking and counteraction by the other party. According to published calculations, a fire platoon of the latest ATGM can destroy up to an enemy tank company.
"Bakhcha" with algorithm
Another interesting product in the line of products of the holding company “High-precision complexes”, presented at the “Army-2015” exhibition, will undoubtedly be the “Bakhcha-U” combat module currently installed on the newest BMD-4М. Its armament, consisting of automatic guns - 30-mm 2А72 and 100-mm 2А70, allows you to destroy and light armored vehicles, armored personnel carriers and BMP of the enemy, his strength, and even well-protected tanks.
The ammunition for this module, produced at the Shcheglovsky Val enterprise, consists of guided missiles capable of handling most modern tanks and high-explosive fragmentation shells with remote blasting, using which BMD-4М effectively hits the enemy in field fortifications shelters.
It is noteworthy that the Bakhchi-U sighting system includes, in addition to day and night optics, a thermal imaging channel, which makes it possible to detect various targets during the day and at night in adverse weather conditions. The complex includes an automatic target tracking system and a meteorological sensor, thanks to which the system receives the required information and immediately calculates the necessary corrections. The BMD-4М operator-operator only needs to identify the object, aim the target frame at it, take the target for tracking and open fire, and then the module will do everything by itself. For a trained crew, the work according to this algorithm takes several seconds, after which the fire can be transferred to another target and also hit it effectively.
A novelty in the exposition of the High-Precision Complexes holding at the current exhibition was the Malachite automated control system for artillery and rocket weapons. He is able not only to detect and recognize targets at any time of the day, but also to measure the distance, to obtain coordinates, moreover, to highlight objects for the use of high-precision weapons systems, in particular the Krasnopol shells. Data from the complex can be easily transferred to firing positions with installations ready for firing.
Placed at the command and observation point "Malachite" allows you to fully automate the work of the entire PNC and in a matter of seconds to transfer the necessary information to the firing positions.
From the Black Sea to the Arctic Ocean
Another product of the High-Precision Complexes holding, together with the anti-tank Kornet, which is, so to speak, the bestseller of the world arms market, in recent years has become the Pantsir anti-aircraft missile-gun complex. Today it is purchased by many countries. The newest ZRPKs are actively supplied to the Air Force of Russia to equip air-defense units, where they are designed to protect C-300, C-400 and promising C-500 from attacks of cruise missiles, UAVs, and in fact from all small-sized targets maneuvering at low altitude with minimal ESR indicators.
Last year, spectators and participants of the Winter Olympics in Sochi could watch the Pantsiri standing on duty, defending the peaceful sky of a resort city from possible terrorist attacks. As the experience of recent exercises showed, ZRPK are able to effectively carry out the tasks set almost in the course even after many kilometers of march.
Work is underway to adapt ZRPK for the needs of the Airborne Forces. Transplanted from a wheeled vehicle to a tracked chassis, such an “Armor” will not only effectively strike enemy air targets, but also be easy to parachute from aircraft.
It is noteworthy that the newest complexes successfully cope with their tasks even in difficult arctic conditions. In particular, on the island of Kotelny several “Pantsyrey” are already based in an unusual gray-white-black polar camouflage. During the exercises in the water area and on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, the batteries of these ZRPKs successfully operated at low temperatures typical of the region and effectively performed the tasks assigned.
And on the approach there is already a fundamentally new model of the Pantsir anti-aircraft missile and cannon complex. It is not only superior to the previous sample in its characteristics. The model was created using advanced technologies, the most modern engineering solutions, primarily in the field of radar technology. It is noteworthy that already now a promising complex, which received the conditional name “Pantsir-M”, is planned to be used in conjunction with C-500.
The specialists of the enterprises of the High-Precision Complexes holding company have developed, implemented and are actively offering the customers the integration system of the Pantsyrei and the anti-tank Cornets into a single firing complex. Thanks to this combination, the unmanned aerial vehicles discovered by the ZRPK can easily be hit with the Kornet anti-tank missiles.
Another premiere of the Army-2015 exhibition will be the Verba portable anti-aircraft missile system developed by specialists of JSC NPK KBM.
Verba is a new generation of MANPADS. Its improved characteristics are based on the use of a fundamentally new homing head — a three-spectral one (the two-spectral is used in the Igly-S) and a new instrument compartment. The sensitivity of OGS was increased many times, its noise immunity was increased. As a result, the zone of target destruction has significantly expanded and the effectiveness of the use of the complex at long ranges has increased.
One of the main advantages of “Willow” is the high probability of hitting low-emitting targets: cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles. These are the flying objects that are difficult to detect, but even harder to knock them down. The effectiveness of the complex, equal to "Verba", in the world.
Significantly improved the quality and reliability of the complex, simplified its maintenance. There is no need to conduct periodic checks in the troops with cooling of the homing head with nitrogen. At the same time, high continuity with the previous complexes in terms of combat work, operation, maintenance and training has been maintained.
In the current difficult economic situation, under the conditions of the sanctions, “High-precision complexes” continue to remain the leader, the world's leading developer and manufacturer of weapons and military equipment. The holding's product line is varied - from pistols, grenade launchers and sniper rifles to the most complex air defense systems and operational-tactical missile systems.
The Army-2015 exhibition under the auspices of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, which is taking place this year, will undoubtedly be another proof of the high results of the holding itself and of its enterprises and research centers.
