Union of Russian gunsmiths states Russia's lag in the development and production of ammunition

5 June, the Union of Russian gunsmiths elected the executive director of the SRO Ruslan Pukhov, who is the director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, during the next annual gathering of members of the organization. 35 heads of leading enterprises of the national defense industry, members of the Union of Russian gunsmiths, took part in the event, and, accordingly, in the voting.

Union of Russian gunsmiths states Russia's lag in the development and production of ammunition

After his election as executive director of the union, Ruslan Pukhov made the following statement, from which it becomes clear that the Russian armory unfortunately, the industry is not in the best of times:
The Union of Russian Gunsmiths has a serious development potential for active participation in resolving issues related to the development of the small arms industry and the formation of active state policy mechanisms to popularize Russian weapons. Given the inevitable budgetary maneuver, full-fledged financing of the industry is an absolute priority, and this must be conveyed to the top leadership and society of our country. Today, we are observing that there has been a technological lag in the ammunition industry, so we need to make every effort to overcome it and reach the level of the world's leading manufacturers.

The lag in the industry, according to statements by other representatives of SROs, is mainly a lag in the development and mass production of innovative ammunition - those ammunition that can be called responsive to modern needs. These are the cartridges and charges of the new generation, which, at optimal costs, allow to solve the most complex tasks in their application.

The main task of the manufacturers of domestic ammunition today is to increase the level of competition. We are also talking about the fact that in a whole number of countries that have long used Soviet (Russian) weapons, today there is a process of reorientation towards the so-called NATO samples. This process is taking place not without lobbying for the interests of the weapons manufacturers of the NATO countries and the political elites of the West, who often export their weapons to foreign countries for their own personal business. And it is not only about the notorious victim of Vietnamese syndrome in the US Senate ...

The more extensive the sales markets for weapons and, accordingly, ammunition for the states that are members of the North Atlantic Alliance, the correspondingly less opportunities for Russian manufacturers. This sets the Russian defense industry companies ambitious task to create such ammunition, which even with the active lobbying position of Washington could enjoy significant demand on the world market. The question is universality? Not only ... Good old cartridges for the Kalashnikov assault rifle, which today is the most popular small arms in the world, despite all the sanctions and other restrictive measures of the main "democrats", of course, no one is going to discount, but without moving forward it is strange expect that in the future small arms of domestic production will continue to win victories in certain markets outside the country. In the end, the very possibility of overstepping foreign technological breakthrough in the creation of a new generation of ammunition provides some food for thought.

In this regard, the Union of Russian gunsmiths talk about the need to create a new strategy. Such a strategy is expressed, in particular, by the general director of the Kalashnikov concern and the first vice-premier of SRO Alexei Krivoruchko:
The updated strategy should cover the whole range of activities of the Union organizations, including not only manufacturers of weapons and ammunition, but also sellers and end users of products, both in the military and civilian segment. Only an integrated approach will contribute to the formation of a “weapon culture” in society and the promotion of Russian weapons on a highly competitive global market.

The market is indeed becoming highly competitive, while the competitiveness of Russia is striving to reduce or even eliminate all kinds of restrictive measures of our big “friends”. The last, if I may say so, the conquest of the “friends of Russia” is drawing Ukraine into the space of the North Atlantic alliance. No, not in the sense that NATO is ready to take Ukraine under its wing tomorrow, but the fact that for weapons manufacturers of NATO, Ukraine is becoming a fairly large market. And it does not matter that the weapons that were written off in the West are sold to Ukraine first of all. It is important that the Ukrainian production sphere itself, which came out of the Soviet subsoil, is detached from the production sphere of Russia, and the Ukrainian armed forces will be gradually transferred to the "standards" of NATO. At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities are not particularly concerned that the NATO “partners” are selling Kiev with funds received by Ukraine on credit from the same West, junk at very substantial prices. So, quite recently, several German armored personnel carriers, launched in Germany at the beginning of the 60s, arrived in Ukraine through Bulgaria. And the cost of each unit (without weapons) according to the documents amounted to 48 thousand euros! Anxiety about the fate of the country is generally not about the current government "Square".

Is the Russian production sector ready for innovative activity in the production of the same ammunition for which we, as stated by the SRO leadership, are lagging behind? The vice-president of machine builders of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Gutenev, said that last year the country managed to launch 11 enterprises that are engaged in the production of ammunition and special chemistry facilities. A number of these companies are working to create modern high-performance ammunition, the action of which is based on the use of special powder compositions and incendiary mixtures, as well as on the basis of innovative approaches to the system to improve accuracy. Now these enterprises, according to representatives of Rosteha, loaded with work and increase their competitiveness on the basis of domestic orders. For obvious reasons, if the work on the creation of ammunition of a new generation will be successful, then representatives of foreign countries will also be interested in products. But in no case can new projects be put on the brakes, otherwise we can really sleep through ...

So far, work in the field of creating, for example, “smart” ammunition is being carried out with the support of the Advanced Research Foundation. We are talking about the so-called “smart bullet”, the projects of which FPI began to collect in October last year. Whether the creation of a domestic “smart bullet” will become a more than worthy response to the development of DARPA, in the depths of which a prototype of homing Exacto small arms ammunition has been created, will be shown only by the presentation of what was born under the auspices of the FPI.

Image on the nature of the use of the Exacto Smart Bullet

However, there are problems with such a presentation ... Since the announcement of the competition for the project of “smart” ammunition, the Advanced Research Foundation has not shared with the media information about the stage at which this project is being implemented. It is clear that this information at the stage of developing an ammunition is not at all for wide publicity, but, as they say, at least one, albeit streamlined, but would like to receive a positive comment from the FPI. After all, the days when the information vacuum was part of the country's defense system ...

The comment is capricious and stupid. Downgrade does not lead to good. But this comparison of M16, AK and Trehlineyki is simply embarrassing to exhibit, because a joke becoming an icon for hat-takers is scary.

Not quite so, just once again some people are trying to "snatch the dough" for "cutting"; in the late 40s there was already a similar story, when scientists from the "atomic project" requested additional funding (you see, there are not enough funds, work due This is slowed down), to which Lavrenty Pavlovich Beria replied: The whole country works for you anyway, so make do with what you have. (In short, he sent "smart guys" with their excessive requests to a well-known address)
And most importantly, Beria was right, since, according to the "atomic scientists" themselves, L.P. Beria delved into all the nuances of the work performed, and at a very professional level, he often entered into disputes with scientists, arguing for his point of view and protecting the interests of the state.

stop The only thing that should not be overlooked is that the Mosin rifle at one time in terms of combat qualities was one of the equal. For example, the Mauser rifle (especially after shortening) was somewhat less reliable, but had a better battle, greater applicability and a more convenient system for installing a safety platoon ... So you can see all the rifles of the late 19th - first third of the 20th century. .. request

the key to the apartment where the money is?

Well, it should be noted you should not be so. I will take a topic close to myself and show an interesting thing on its example. Russia is catastrophically lagging behind any developed country in the development and production of diagnostic and laboratory equipment both for hospitals of large regional and city scales, and for smaller structures. It would seem that all the prerequisites for a real leap to first place in the 80s and even in the 90s were. Here you have a relatively good design, good compactness, good power consumption for those years. Yes, it is corny LCD displays with sensors, albeit low-sensitivity, on which it was necessary to hammer with a hammer (yes, I personally saw a hemoanalyzer "Made in the USSR" with a touch screen, produced already in '85!).
As a result, it turned out that due to aggressive advertising by Western manufacturers (Zimensa, Nokia, Mitsubishi all sorts), including often information on the level of production and scientific research, they simply trampled all our research institutes, which were so secret that they did not even cooperate with each other and information was not shared. Has anyone heard of anything about modern Russian equipment? No.
No matter how sad and libertine it may sound, Russians cannot and do not know how to advertise and sell their face, remembering that they are "met by their clothes".
Because now it turned out that, bypassing sanctions, it is necessary through third parties to buy the same Finnish and German equipment, because they strangled their own or strangled themselves.
Ask, I suppose, what have the shells to do with it? I, as a purely civilian person, will also not stick my nose into science. Look at exhibitions, the same ARMS Expo. Russia has a kick-ass weapon, but it doesn't attract investors and money. And where there is no money, young minds do not come, those very "pale vyunoshes with a burning gaze" who write code at night, instead of drinking alcohol, or sit in laboratories. Because money is needed in spite of everything to think about work, and not about how to scrape together money for a date with a potential bride and improve the demographic situation.

I apologize - but you could only say the whole phrase - you advocate that the manufacture of weapons in Russia would go completely into private hands (well, maybe with the exception of nuclear weapons). I'm right?
I hasten to assure you that lately, it is true, we have to admit that not everywhere - young men with a burning gaze and inquisitiveness, and also (let's not forget about this) with "golden hands" are attracted to the military-industrial complex enterprises for pretty good salaries. example? The asterisk invites a turner for production - for 70 rubles. I will not speak for the whole complex (he himself is employed in the fiber industry) - you give a result - you have constant funding and at a fairly good level. How else?
and there is no need to compare the situation with laboratory diagnostic equipment and, frankly, a stupid claim about the undiscovered NICORs carried out in the field of development of ammunition

The problem with ammunition is the tip of the iceberg. Gunpowder is that? That's right, chemistry. And terrible chemistry (nothing natural). And in order to produce or develop gunpowder, you need to have a strong chemical industry with research potential. Where are all our research institutes? Decayed (for the most part). To establish production we need equipment (we do not manufacture it). It also turns out that high-quality raw materials are needed in large volumes (we plan to produce products by trains and not to carry samples to exhibitions). It turns out that we either do not have raw materials at all, or it is of poor quality. And why? No chem. industry.
With metallurgy, everything is the same.
After all, even our cartridges are equipped with imported gunpowder and often an imported bullet (I know as the owner of 12 gauge). All the best domestic cartridges are collected from all imported. Capsules are not super either.
And now we have come to the conclusion that in order to get the finished product, it is necessary to raise a number of industries and attract thousands of specialists (by the way, there are also workers, of whom we have not very much become).
First you need to start producing normal gunpowder. Moreover, different types. When we learn, then we can continue to reason.
A simple example: when shooting an inexpensive domestic bullet, I have a terrible fiery exhaust from the trunk (I am silent about sharp returns). And shooting with imported gunpowders from the side you can see a tight gas cloud. The conclusion is simple, gunpowder will not burn out when it is necessary.
My resume. Start upgrading the ammunition that is already being produced. After some, cleaning is immediately needed, or rust will go. There is also such a concept as "corrosive cartridge".

Say nothing natural, so switch to "smoky" (aka black powder), everything can be found in nature and you need potassium nitrate, sulfur, coal; proportions: 66 \ 16 \ 18 in mass fractions, I think you will find the manufacturing process yourself as are the connections for the hoods.
Good luck, I hope you get better than the industry!
And yes, on your own, you can make several types of gunpowder (including smokeless) pyroxylin.

I do not understand what you mean by that. And smokeless powder and smoky has nothing to do with it. And what and how to mix, I already have ideas. But only this is a toy in the modern world.

About "smart bullets". Is it true?
I doubt. A guided mortar shell was extremely difficult to make, and then a tiny bullet. Are you going to deviate the trajectory of its flight by shifting the center of gravity?

No, to shoot from a slingshot, the trajectory is unpredictable so it can be stated that the bullet itself chooses its own path.

Need an advertisement. And in part, money in the industry can be attracted through the popularization of shooting sports. And in part, the resolution of the CCW can help as a means of self-defense, simplification of certain laws, and most importantly, the practice of applying laws. Although I strongly doubt something will be done towards simplification.

Why is the cartridge manufacturer advertising? After all, no Intel processors advertise. Who needs it knows. The state should give money for such things. And production should be state-owned.

So less to go to such events with subsequent receptions. You look at the photo and you can’t see that there are problems in the industry. all faces are happy and glossy.

they have one problem - how to do nothing, divide the budget pie in the form of military orders in their favor. Apparently, they are afraid of lobbying the opening of the civilian arms market.

Keyword: sell. If you sell weapons, as they do in the States, then you really need to do quality and take care of the release of the latest ammunition. And if you give out for free, and then forgive debts, as is done with us, then what are the extra gestures? A shooting set of stamped parts and a sample cartridge of a thousand and a hundred shaggy year are enough. We sell this set to the state, we think grandmas, the state distributes iron to nigrams. Drain, repeat ...
