Small caliber shells can be tracked by a holographic radar

Developed an experimental model of the radar system, produced by the technology firm Cambridge Consultants. The newest system is able to track the trajectory of the 5-inch artillery shells. The real-time information can be used to create active protection systems, as well as in the organization of training firing.

Holographic three-dimensional radar, Land and Surface Target Scorer (LSTS) became the basis of the tracking system, which is the first and best of its kind in the world.

Highlighting and coverage of the entire observation area allows you to track the trajectory of fast-moving targets. Strong interference and the work of any countermeasure system cannot withstand the work of special software algorithms, whose program is to allocate high-speed targets in the general noise radar background.

A distinctive feature of the LSTS system is the use of not one narrowly directed transmitter and receiver, but several with hemisphere coverage with a viewing angle of 360 degrees. The implementation of the reception of the reflected signals is receiving devices. Incoming signals undergo rapid digital processing, which is carried out by high-performance DSP processors.

A prototype of the system was tested in the US Naval Surface Warfare Center.

On a small pontoon, with an installed radar installation, artillery fire was opened. The coverage overview was a hemisphere in 360 degrees, and the radar radius was equal to 300 meters.

The result of the experiment was the successful tracking of the flight of shells and ammunition explosion points.

The second test is scheduled to take place in the conditions of movement of a high-speed maneuverable vessel.
