Large-caliber sniper rifle THOR M408

19
Large-caliber sniper rifles from the THOR family are available armory THOR Global Defense Group, Inc., headquartered in Arkansas. This is an American high-precision weapon, the main purpose of which is firing at long and ultra-long distances - up to 2000 yards or more. Large-caliber sniper rifle THOR M408 is officially in service with the US Army and police, as well as some other countries. In addition, THOR rifles are also presented on the civilian weapons market in a variety of modifications, including for smaller caliber ammunition.

The new THOR M408 sniper rifle was introduced by the THOR Global Defense Group at the start of 2010. This rifle was a further improvement of the CheyTac M200 large-bore sniper rifle, the production of which was completed in the first decade of the 21st century. Rifles combined a single cartridge 408 Chey Tac caliber 10,3x77 mm. The bullet of this cartridge is able to hit any body armor, as well as concrete slabs, walls, lightly armored vehicles. The cartridge is designed for use with sniper complexes, it provides a high-precision level of fire, is in service with security forces, and can be used as an anti-sniper and antimaterial weapon in combination with the THOR M408.

In the THOR M408 large-caliber sniper rifle, manual reloading is used with a longitudinal sliding bolt and also with two lugs located in front of the bolt. To increase the reliability of the use of weapons in the most adverse weather conditions, the valleys (longitudinal grooves) of the spiral shape were cut on the surface of the bolt. These grooves were designed to squeeze out dust and dirt, and also had to prevent the movement of the shutter. The barrel of a rifle is thick-walled, massive enough, it is equipped with an integrated muzzle brake-compensator. The barrel also has longitudinal valleys, they are cut through its outer surface and serve to increase the rigidity of the structure, better cool the barrel and reduce the overall weight of the sniper rifle.

The receiver of the rifle is made of steel, it has a massive structure in which a quick-change barrel is installed, placed in a special tubular forearm-casing. In the muzzle of the barrel has a thread that is designed for mounting the muzzle brake-compensator or silencer sound of a shot. Above the trigger on the right side of the receiver is a two-way fuse. The sniper rifle is supplied with ammunition from detachable box magazines designed for 7 cartridges of caliber 10,3x77 mm.

This sniper rifle is not staffed with open sights. For mounting optical sights on it are common guide rails type Picatinny rail, which are located on the receiver. The weapon manufacturer recommends using the Nightforce 5.5-22x56 optical scope with it. If necessary, the optical sight can be supplemented with an infrared laser for target illumination and a night vision module.

One of the features of the THOR M408 large-caliber rifle is its retractable telescopic butt, which has an adjustable cheek and a folding adjustable back support under the butt. It is the original telescopic butt with the “third leg” in the back and the pistol grip that complete the overall picture. The advantage of this butt is the ability to reduce the overall length of the weapon, and the minus is that the pillow under the sniper’s cheekbone is unregulated, and in addition, the butt looks flimsy, as it is attached to a rifle on rods of small section. The butt plate was equipped with a special rubber insert, which is able to extinguish the recoil force and increases the comfort of using the weapon for the shooter. In front of the forearm (barrel cover) a folding bipod is attached to the rifle.

For the convenience of carrying a THOR M408 sniper rifle in a combat situation, it has a rotary handle that is located near its center of gravity. For transportation in the stowed position and storage of weapons, the barrel is removed, and the telescopic butt slide moves forward to the stop, which significantly reduces the size of the weapon.

In the basic version and with correctly selected cartridges, a large-caliber THOR M408 sniper rifle is able to provide stable accuracy of shooting with a rate of less than 1 angular minutes (Sub-MOA) at a distance of 2000 yards (1829 meters). Large-caliber sniper rifle THOR M408 is in service with the armed forces of the United States and a number of law enforcement agencies. It is also represented in the civilian market, it is in demand among shooters who are engaged in high-precision long-range shooting.

The THOR M408 rifle is used with a .408 Cheyenne Tactical large-caliber cartridge, commonly referred to as the 408 Chey Tac. This munition was created in 2001 by employees of the American weapons company CheyTac USA. Initially, this cartridge was conceived as a special sniper cartridge of the XXI century. It was designed to provide high-precision shooting at long distances up to 3 thousands of meters, while maintaining the destructive power of the bullet at a distance of up to 3,5 thousands of meters.

However, despite such impressive numbers, in reality, the .408 Chey Tac 10,3х77 mm cartridge is used at a distance of up to 2,5 thousand meters. This limitation is due to the technical capabilities of today's large-caliber sniper rifles, as well as the sighting devices used with them. In the line of sniper ammunition, this cartridge occupies an intermediate position between the very popular .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge (8,6х70 mm) and the very powerful .50 BMG (12,7х99 mm). At the same time .408 Chey Tac is only slightly inferior to the latter in terms of killer action. At the same time, it slightly exceeds the .50 BMG cartridge in terms of external ballistic characteristics at a shooting distance of up to 1000 meters, while possessing a significantly lower return at the moment of the shot.

Performance characteristics of THOR M408:
Caliber: 10,3 mm.
The length of the rifle with the butt folded back - 1384 mm, with a folded - 1219 mm.
Rifle barrel lengths - 762 mm.

Strong middling. Accurate, light enough, reliable (and there is not much to break there). Classical American School. There are, of course, a number of questions about the butt, the bipod attachment, the carry handle, and most importantly, the receiver cradle. But this is all of course nit-picking, but in general it is good. And of course a kind of "intermediate" cartridge is not bad.
It is also necessary to add about the popularity of this unit among PMC fighters, academicians, rednecks and other geese.

and most importantly on the cradle.

Do not quite understand what you mean by "receiver cradle"? If the receiver is there, it is solid-milled from one piece of "iron" wassat.
If the forend is a "luminous" tube, the so-called free float forend, and, accordingly, the freely suspended barrel does not interact with the forend on any side.

Forend - loosens fasteners, vibrates. The handle adds resonant mass. "Private traders" from DVG complained. When the "pull-up" is done, it flips out the light and all over again. They take it (the lumin) and use it that way.

Anyway, you can fight with technology. The same armor 80 / 82, BMP 1 / 2 / 3, tiger and tiger spm will flash for a sweet soul.

Yeah .. shchazz .. I doubt very much that the armored personnel carrier or the Tiger will penetrate 400-500 meters. This, as already mentioned here, is the classic "antipersonal" rifle. It is useless to work with such a bullet on armored vehicles, even if by some miracle the board pierces, the outboard action will be zero.

A person with 2000 m and an accuracy of 1 corner minute will be problematic to get into. The spread will be about 60 cm. You will need to shoot 2-3 times. And on a moving target, the tube is generally taking into account the time of approach. But you’ll get into the armored personnel carrier. Although how safe it is and what damage to the car from one 10 mm bullet is also not clear. But these are the problems of all such rifles. She looks good in her class. That's where where, and in such rifles it is necessary to use composites and new alloys. And then 11 kg and 1 yr minute may not help when you are fired from an 30 mm BMP gun with automatic fire. Not much will seem.

Do not write nonsense, no matter what kind of sniper rifle the key to his survival is secrecy, from the moment they are discovered, everything and everything begins to work on it.

What is problematic?) At 1829m it gives accuracy in an inch and then it will drop sharply to 171 inches over 24m in your opinion?)

From what reassurance does it give an accuracy per inch in 1829? If you recalculate this data, you get a accuracy of 0,047 MOA, which even in theory is not yet possible.
Little educational program - "In the West, they describe groups of hits on targets in the MOA because this angular width is almost exactly equal to one inch at 100 yards, then it expands and becomes two inches at 200 yards, three inches at 300 yards and so on up to 10 inches at 1000 yards." wassat
Since a grouping of less than 1 MOA is indicated for her, we take 0,9 and calculate that at a range of 1829 m, the pile would ideally be 47 cm.
          So learn the mat. part.

The article is not the latest CheyTac USA rifle under this cartridge.

The cartridge used in this rifle is very interesting. It maintains supersonic speed at distances over 2000m. At distances over 700m, a .408 Chey Tac bullet has more kinetic energy than a .50BMG bullet, while the weight of the bullet, the weight of the weapon itself and the recoil of the weapon under this cartridge is less than the corresponding .50BMG. Almost up to a kilometer, the bullet flies along a very straight ballistic trajectory and the shooter is not required to make any significant corrections to the range when aiming. The wind drift of a .408 Chey Tac bullet is also lower than that of a .50BMG. However, to this day there are a number of problems associated with the production of barrels and the weapon itself, which maximizes the potential of this cartridge. The cartridge itself in the USA costs about $ 7.

About accuracy less than 1 arc minute. Lobaev wrote a lot about the fact that accuracy parameters of 0,2-0,3 MOA for high-precision rifles for special ammunition are quite achievable. Lobaev himself traveled extensively in the States and studied this issue directly from the manufacturers of such weapons in the United States. Subsequently, he himself began to produce such rifles. Almost everyone who is interested in this topic has heard about Lobaev’s rifles.

Great thing for hunting gophers. Everything you need is at hand: an ideal position in the steppe, a mini-meteorological station, a ballistic calculator, shockproof optics for the price of 2 rifles, a table with a level and a chair, and of course the rodent itself. BDZYN! (Shot, as it is - from a "piece of iron") Dead gopher ... and silence ...
