The second life of BRDM. Scouts on "civilian." Part one

61
I believe that the Austrian off-road vehicle Pinzgauer and an armored reconnaissance and patrol vehicle (BRDM) are particularly popular in the sales market for conversion special and automotive vehicles that were in storage in the armed forces.

For their exceptional qualities they have gained immense popularity among hunters and fishermen, among fans of extreme driving, and simply among those who want to climb into the most impassable jungle in pursuit of a good portion of adrenaline.

I decided to devote this review to civilian versions of the BRDM-2.

It turned out that on the Internet, many owners of the BRDM posted more or less detailed photo reports and descriptions of the alterations that were made so that their “war horses” would gain civilian comfort and meet their specific requirements. After all, they are bought for specific needs, be it an extreme expedition, hunting or fishing, fun “rides”, transportation of VIP-passengers or high-value cargo.

I learned that BRDM is engaged in the alteration and fine-tuning in different ways: both enthusiasts on an individual basis and campaigns are in “small series”. This can occur in a private garage, in which a pair of men with light heads and straight arms will create a “shushpantser”, which they themselves will go hunting or fishing for. Or maybe this will be done by a specialized enterprise and a tuning studio, fulfilling the order of a wealthy man who has everything, but I want something else.

The price of this or that machine depends on the number of alterations, their technical equipment, their functionality and on who did it, the team of enthusiasts or a specialized workshop.

After reviewing a lot of information, I put together the posted reviews and photos of the most interesting, in my opinion, samples and offer the result to you, dear readers. I apologize if I forgot to mention someone or vice versa, I overdid it and opened someone incognito. All materials (photos, videos and texts) used in this review are taken from open sources. BRDM - my second car!
Vadim Amosov, Simferopol.

The idea to buy BRDM appeared by chance, in the bath. Once in a Saturday bath, in September 2009, one of my friends asked:
- Vadik, you do not want to buy BRDM? There is a possibility.
- What is it? - I asked.
“Difficult to explain,” answered the Admiral. - Type on the Internet, in a search engine, "BRDM-2", you will see everything ...

From that moment began sleepless nights with thoughts about buying this "miracle of technology". Straight sick them! And, most importantly, I do not know why he told me - I am not a hunter or a treasure hunter! Just want and that's it!

Paperwork lasted 2 month. During this time, managed to go to the military unit, choose your car. December 24 put it on KAMAZ and drove to the Crimea. Naturally, before that, a tower with weapons, a night-vision device, armor plates covering the front windows and the entire interior: radios, chemical equipment, triplexes, etc., were removed. they threw off the place with a crane, put the batteries in, brought them in "with poltyka" and drove into the garage under their own power.

Imagine, on the speedometer 1250 km, and those, probably twisted. 34, stood on the street, in the rain and snow, and wound up and went! Pride in the technique of the USSR!

We rode for several days, then drove it into a box and cut it for four months, cooked it, ripped off all the paint and painted it. The result was exactly what I wanted.

I wanted to partially use it for commercial purposes, then changed my mind. We ride with friends in the mountains and swim in the lakes.

Put on record in Gostekhnadzor as an energy module for agricultural purposes. Bought the right tractor driver. Inspection, insurance - everything is as it should be!

I post pictures of "reincarnation" ...

Taking this opportunity, I want to say thanks to everyone who participated in this project!

Painting BRDM was one of the most difficult and painstaking work.
Pasha (on the site - grivna22) well done, only tired some of the "partners": works exclusively at night!

All-terrain vehicle BRDM (S 5.5 VIP-class).
Michael. No other data could be found.
(This car has a similarity with the photo that is posted on the NP "Ecoprof" website. - Note.).

The second life of BRDM. Scouts on "civilian." Part one

“The tuning took more than three years, a lot of money and an uncompensated number of nerve cells. But we still need to work on the image, "says Michael.

Short description:
All-terrain vehicle BRDM (S 5.5 VIP-class).
Single copy, completely manual assembly.
The speed on the highway to 120 km / h, on the water to 12 km / h.
Engine V-8 5.5 forced.
Armored hull, black and green nacre- "chameleon".
The car is equipped with a satellite communications system station, air conditioning, tele-audio equipment, an echo sounder, a powerful top searchlight, a night-vision device, strobe lights, GPS navigation, leather interior, etc. "garbage."

Power point:
Special purpose motor ZMZ-41.
Carburetor, petrol, 8-cylinder engine with a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders at an angle of 90 degrees, high-turbulent combustion chambers and screw inlet channels.
Nom. power 140 hp with crankshaft speed 3200 rev.
Max. torque 353 N.m. at crankshaft speed 2000-2500 rev.
Minimum specific fuel consumption 333 (245) g / kWh (g / hp.h.)
Cylinder Bore x Stroke, 100x88 mm.
Weight: 271 kg.
Fuel: AI-76.
Compression ratio: 6,7.

It all started with the fact that once Mikhail saw the BDR passing a car. I saw and came to a complete delight - that’s what a real man needs! Having learned from the military all that they knew about the car, Mikhail got excited about the idea of acquiring the same one and soon discovered that it was quite possible - it would be enough money. Enough!

The only condition was the absence of a tower with weapons. Armored protection, unsurpassed throughput, ability to swim and, of course, military strength. So that, as we know how to do military equipment.

Later, the idea came to redo everything that is possible, and, in the end, overshadow the Hummer. Enthusiasm fueled the idea that this car is domestic.

The work was immense. The car had to be dismantled. Imagine what that means: the car is huge, native assembly and even stuffed, unfamiliar "civilian" mechanics. But this stage was not the most difficult. Ahead was the reworking of the units, the change of the exterior, the re-equipment of the cabin ...

The body of the car was trimmed to bare metal and repainted. Combining the old, multi-layered painting technology with intermediate polishing and the best modern materials. The current color of the car owner calls “black and green pearl-chameleon”. The paint is really interesting: it looks and feels like powder enamel.

Some elements of the hull and cockpit are decorated with corrugated aluminum sheet. This not only decorates the car, but also makes it more comfortable and safer. For example, a corrugated on the nose of the case will allow you not to slip in wet shoes or barefoot. Aluminum is not just riveted to the body, it is planted on epoxy two-component adhesive UHU Plus Endfest 300 with incredible bond strength.
And riveting - for beauty. Well, and additional insurance at the same time.

Established headlights placed on the nose, according to the owner of the car, shone badly. There was a simple way out: they hung six identical headlights instead of four. Shells were chromed, the glass was protected with a chrome grille.

In addition, put all the necessary lighting devices - turn signals, parking lights. A huge searchlight-detector and a night-vision device were installed on top of the armor.

With the visibility of the army machine trouble. To simplify the life of the driver, armor plates were removed from the front windows, huge spherical mirrors were attached to the sides of the cab, and a spare camera on the swivel bracket was attached to the spare tire standing in the stern above the jet engine tunnel (the designers apparently did not expect a retreat that it is simply impossible to move backwards without it). The viewing angle allows you to get an excellent picture on the monitor in the cockpit. Installed sounder.

The BRDM is welded entirely from armor plates and can float, which means it would be nice to see the bottom relief with underwater inhabitants in the details.

By the way, about the spare wheel. By and large, this is just a sham, because the compressor central paging wheels allows each cylinder to withstand up to seven bullet holes, not to mention the nails.
Yes, and remove, put such a wheel can not everyone.

Clarify this point. At first glance it seems that the car is four-wheel drive, but - take a look! Between each pair on the board is placed two more wheels - smaller.

Here are pneumatic aviation tires inflated to 5,5-6,0 atm. Usually they are in a stowed position - tightened under the "belly". But they can be released by turning on the hydraulic drive, and then the BRDM will become four-axis. AND?! On patency to him unless a tank compete, what can I say about all kinds of Land Rover or even Hummer. Also, the standard equipment of the BRDM includes a 4-ton winch with a 30-meter cable.

The six-seater cabin in a yacht style is luxurious - trimmed with expensive, pleasant to the touch leather of “currency” color, carpet of the same shade, panels of lacquered African oak. It has everything you can dream of: satellite communication system, fire extinguishing system, video and audio equipment, echo sounder, night vision device, GPS navigation, bar, refrigerator, periscope, etc., etc.
On the little things like air conditioning and not worth it.

Again amazes the attention of performers to trifles: for example, the lock of the hatch leading to the engine compartment, not anyhow, but the brand Mul-T-Lock. Of course, chrome.

Now again a little about the engine compartment. V8 carburetor with 5,5 liter capacity, forced to 132 kW (180 hp). The standard ZMZ-41 develops 140 l. with. at 3200 rpm The torque is 353 Nm in the 2000-2500 rpm range. Of course, the increase in 40 forces for such a motor is not God knows that, but the car can honestly keep the speed of 120 km / h on the highway and up to 12 km / h on the water. Where more ?!

It is necessary to take into account the G8’s brutal appetite. True, the capacity of the fuel tanks, too, can not be called modest, and it is believed that the power reserve on one refueling - 750 km. Tuning BRDM eats gasoline in much the same way as standard: the weight of additional equipment is compensated by the absence of the turret.

Those who have seen the usual BRDM will confirm - the voice is awesome. The “luxury” sound can be called pleasant - the engine is more gentle, and the tuning mufflers are of the Ultima brand. Allow me to make sure that they stand in their places above the engine, next to the hooks for towing on water.

It took more than three years to connect the achievements of our military industrial complex and “their” tuning, a lot of money and an uncompensated number of nerve cells. To say that the owner is completely dissatisfied with the result, it is impossible. “We still need to work on the image,” Mikhail argues. “There is still something chauvinistic in the BRDM.” The words of Mikhail Zhvanetsky from the monologue “My reservation” somehow come to mind:

I want to buy, as during the war, a tank at the expense of the artist, but to use myself for a while. It's nice, probably, to suddenly appear in the housing office and ask to replace the floor in the kitchen, without leaving the car. It is good to enter the market and ask through the slot: "Skoko, skoko? One kilo or the whole bag?"

I am glad for financially secure enthusiasts, on the "decommissioned" BRDM-2, the main thing is to put a diesel engine instead of ZMZ and remove additional wheels with a mechanism, change seats and upholster the interior with leather - for an amateur.

BRDM is my dream, for a long time already in the internet I saw info about these cars in private hands. Yes, and from the training he was released as "the commander of the reconnaissance group on the BRDM-2M", though only a little left, the eternal shortage of fuels and lubricants.

The 2nd BRDMK is a serious car.
I looked at the photo and honestly didn’t really like all these alterations.
The first option is more modestly "packed" and is more suitable for a private all-terrain vehicle that will be operated off-road.
The second option is just a toy for a rich "Buratina" nothing more.

If I had a medium and a desire to acquire and operate such equipment, then the alteration would start with the engine to begin with. I would put a turbocharged diesel engine D-245 or YaMZ-534 with a compressor, "Webasto" "autonomy", a circulation pump and normal heaters for heating the passenger compartment. Although diesel fuel is more expensive, the consumption of the D-245 is almost half that of the gasoline "eight" from the "shishiga", therefore, the power reserve at one gas station is greater. By the way, the diesel heats up less when driving off-road.
It is better to put the generator more powerful and to remake the electrician under it too.
On the transmission and chassis, I would not remodel anything.

But the brake system would be redone. You can make it dual-circuit, instead of single-circuit.
To supply the braking equipment from the PAZ-3205 bus (additional receivers, modern "unloading" with a replaceable filter-dryer, the brake valve should be altered into two circuits or another suitable one should be installed).
This will increase the reliability and reliability of the working brakes of the machine compared to a standard installed system, as well as improve their speed and efficiency.
The parking brake would also be completely redone, instead of a drum brake, you can put a disc brake with a hydraulic drive and a caliper, but it must be selected or made to order. Having remade the "handbrake" in this way, you can significantly increase its efficiency and put the car on steep slopes without fear that it will fall off it (as can happen with a standard drum, besides, such a handbrake does not require constant adjustment), ie. use the "handbrake" as a more reliable mountain or emergency brake.

For the fighting compartment (cabin): dismantling the turret, you can put a rotating ring "guide" for installing pivot turrets for firing from a gun or carbine, as well as for installing optical observation or additional lighting devices. And make its hatch completely removable with one built-in sash in the form of a crescent (the hatch itself can be made of good durable plastic to facilitate the construction). Place the passenger seats in such a way that the middle of the fighting compartment always remains free for the shooters.
As for the soft upholstery, I am negative about the entire internal volume, but this is a matter of individual taste and the presence of brains in the head (after all, the BRDM is primarily an all-terrain vehicle, not a limousine).

Of the additional equipment, I would install an autonomous gas generator, etc., for 2 kW with a voltage of 220V, I think there is no need to explain the usefulness of this thing in a long trip.

Well, for the "filling", of course, you must always have a trench tool and a completely complete spare parts on board and you can go ...

And yet, in order to operate such equipment, you need a regular driver's license, cat. C, and certificate for additional training in the specialty "driver of wheeled combat vehicles" (armored personnel carriers or armored personnel carriers).

Because in the "base" the machine has a pneumo-hydraulic drive of the service brake system, in order to convert it to a fully pneumatic one, you will need to completely redo the entire brake system in a radical way. Those. it will be necessary to replace not only the units and parts of the drive (brake valve, master cylinders, etc.), but also to put on bridges, for example, brake chambers with drive shafts and brake fists that drive brake pads, as well as other brake drums, pads , lead to the chambers of the pneumatic line, etc., etc. In short, a lot of time and cost.
I propose to make minor changes to the design of the brake system to increase its reliability, speed and efficiency. This will take much less time and cf.

          I hope I answered.

Duc, the main requirement of the State Academic Technical University was the maximum unification of the units and assemblies that were produced at that time by the automobile industry of the USSR.
By the way, on the BTR-60 (and they were designed at the same time as the BRDM-2), the working braking system is also single-circuit, and it weighs about 10 tons. wink
We are taught. in a technical school he told how "awesome" it was to ride a 60-ke in Afghanistan (he was there in the first years). Especially if one or more suspension assemblies are damaged during a mine explosion (and if it was also on the descent). wink
This is when the wheel at 60 matches with the wheel gearbox, driveshaft and suspension arms. fellow

Nothing, the main thing is to have time to "lean" on the serpentine sideways to the hill sideways, and not to leave it on the cliff ... laughing

But on the 70-ke working brakes have already become double-circuit ... And the KPVT began to hover vertically higher ...

BMD-2, a good interior, with leather chairs ... and a door for entry and exit, very ergonomic (such a door that would be hermetically sealed would have been suitable for modernization of a combat BM)))

this problem is easily solved * not so much weight), if on the BRDM-2 do 2-way inlet-outlet ... to maintain rigidity in the structure, 10 mm back from the bottom and roof ... but also etc.

On Object 1200, the problem with BM alignment was solved although the engine was installed on the port side ... the wheeled BMP prototype was seaworthy ...

It will cost a trip on such an aggregate for fishing or hunting, although anyone who has the opportunity to tune this way, probably the cost of fuel will not stop. The main thing is not to call in where additional helicopter wheels will not help.

BRDMKi has good traffic, these rollers are needed to overcome obstacles such as mounds, ditches, trenches, etc. ... They are not used when driving on flat terrain.
There is a centralized tire inflation system for this.
By the way, I completely forgot about it, instead of 4 ventilators, you can put electro-pneumatic valves separately on each wheel, put toggle switches and put everything on one remote control. With which one "flag" or toggle switch could control the pressure in all wheels at once. And if one of the wheels is damaged, cut off the air along the line simply by clicking the toggle switch, and not rotating the "lambs" as on the base machine.

In a situation when it is necessary to change the pressure during movement, the cranes of all wheeled lines are open and the pressure is regulated by a common crane, easily accessible to the driver. If one wheel is damaged, the rest of the valves overlap in order to direct all the air into the wheel with a hole. At least on the trucks it was.

Question to the author: if you speak so positively about BRDM-2, then explain, please, why all these newfangled Tigers, Patrols, Typhoons, Pennants and so on? What does the layout of the BRDMK not suit? It is enough to put a modern engine, a convex bottom (mine resistance), air conditioning, a heater (as craftsmen do) - and you get a decent fighting vehicle. But all the newfangled samples can not swim, not so passable (they can sit on the belly). Why all this? Maybe - just beat off the money for a new development. The money is official, but the profits will go to the PRIVATE owners of all automobile companies.

At the very beginning of the article it is written:
I collected and put together the laid out reviews and photos of the most interesting, in my opinion, samples and offer the result to you, dear readers.

That is, in the article the owners themselves express their personal opinion: the opinion of a civil user.

By the way, here is just an article about Patrol. There is a photo below. What, to hell, mine resistance !? All suspension parts: springs, axles, CV joints, brake cylinders, hoses - are open. Any explosion under the bottom (not like mines, grenades) - and the car instantly immobilizes. And it will become just a target for terrorists.

... Regarding the BRDM2 5.5 S-classe salon ... Of course, a little offtopic, but the perfectionist’s soul could not stand it: either when the author painted the leather-tree he was a little disingenuous, or the photographer needed to tear his hands from where they grow and sew on to the shoulders ... Realistically, the interior looks like sheathed with budget eco-leather, and its shade wraps an eerie longing (although of course they don’t argue about tastes), just a few months ago she upholstered the interior in the service Sprinter, in which the hard workers are transported to our facilities, ahem. ..there it turned out to be much nicer looking ... I would put a normal driver’s armchair with a head restraint and lateral support (but again, they don’t argue about tastes). The wood trim looks like on an Obkomovsk boat of the 60s, the ceiling lights from the minibus in such a cabin - well, this is generally the finish, the rear view camera and navigator monitors - xs, also some kind of budget is fierce ... Unless of course the owner Himself is everything I’ve done it in my leisure time — it’s just super for handicraft work, but if you made it to order - it’s a fluffy white animal ... If you could lead it, you could do everything much more carefully and thoughtfully and that would not affect the final price of the whole project, sadness ...
