The unmanned American X-37B vehicle has been in orbit for more than 600 days.

The secret American unmanned aerial vehicle X-37B has been in space for more than 600 days. At the same time, the mission that this device performs is still unknown, and during the time that the device is in space, it could fly to Mars with a scientific mission and go back, landing at a conventional aerodrome. According to mission member Joan Johnson-Fries, the US Air Force continues to test, trying to go beyond the boundaries of the possible with its X-37B spacecraft, working on solar energy.

The US Air Force sent this mini-shuttle to Earth orbit for another 11 December 2012 of the year. The device was launched into space using the Atlas 5 launch vehicle. The launches are carried out from Cape Canaveral in Florida, the device is launched into space, being in a special protective capsule. On 8 September 2014, the unmanned spacecraft has been in orbit for 636 days, which is 1 year 8 months and 28 days, to be exact. This result is a record among all reusable spacecraft for the entire history their existence.

Of course, there are spacecraft in the Earth’s orbit, which can be in space for many years, for example, numerous navigation satellites or the ISS. But so far there has not been a single reusable one, that is, capable of making several flights into orbit of an apparatus that could stay there for so long. The space shuttles used by the United States could be offline for a maximum of two weeks in space. In turn, the reusable space shuttle, which very much resembles a smaller version of the shuttle, is in space for more than 600 days.

At present, the first prototype of the X-37B spacecraft, which has already managed to go there earlier, is in space. He made his first flight in 2010, the spacecraft was in orbit from April 22 to December 3 2010. By sending a spacecraft into orbit, the US Air Force and the Boeing development company wanted to test the suitability of this kind of unmanned aerial vehicles for multiple use, and also to prove the possibility of relatively inexpensive launching of various payloads into orbit. The second flight of this program took place on 5 March 2011 of the year and lasted until 16 June 2012, then the second X-37B was sent to space.

The space unmanned vehicle X-37B has a length of 8,8 meter, its wingspan is 4,5 meter. The take-off mass of the apparatus, which is able to return from orbit and land in an aircraft-based manner, is approximately 5 tons. The spaceship is able to fly at altitudes from 200 to 750 km. The device is able to quickly change the flight orbit, as well as maneuver. To ensure high maneuverability, the ship is equipped with a wing and tail, which consists of two all-turning planes.

It is curious that earlier the military said that the estimated duration of the apparatus in orbit was only 270 days. The mini-shuttle has an internal compartment to accommodate various payloads - its length is about two meters, width - about a meter. X-37B is an unmanned vehicle that is equipped with a folding solar panels. It is the solar panels that provide power to the systems and components of the spacecraft, as well as its payload during long-term stay in space. According to unconfirmed information, in the future, such devices can be used to solve reconnaissance tasks.

The program to create a flying laboratory, which received the designation X-37, originates in July 14 1999, when a contract was signed with the corporation Boeing totaling 173 million dollars. The customer of this project was the space agency NASA. At this stage the project was civil. Announcements at the conclusion of the agreement the purpose of the development of the spacecraft involved the development and testing of more 40 new technologies in the field of propulsion systems, design, operation methods. In the future, project work should have contributed to the development of cheaper and reliable fully reusable launch vehicles. Initially, it was reported that the main functions of the device will be delivery to orbit of various payloads.

However, after the start of work, the customer was changed, the true reasons for which are still unknown. Perhaps the military "took away" the project from civilians on their own initiative, while the civil department could lose interest in the project due to cuts in funding. Anyway, the project was transferred from the Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA) to the Agency for Advanced Defense Research and Development (DAPRA). After the transfer of the project under the wing of the US Department of Defense, all the main aspects of this program, ranging from technical information, goals of creation and ending with the funding of work, were completely classified.

The objectives of the X-37B spacecraft stay in orbit are still unknown. Certainly, the flight is experimental and important in itself, but whether he has any other goals, besides checking the equipment and systems of the spacecraft, nobody can say. Many experts are inclined to believe that the X-37B has a payload in the form of a powerful optical tracking system. In addition, the dimensions of the existing cargo compartment can accommodate even several nuclear warheads or other weaponsFor example, promising hypersonic bombs. Currently, the US Air Force has two similar experimental mini-shuttles capable of flying. The ships have already conducted two missions in orbit: OTV-1 - the duration of 225 days, OTV-2 - the duration - 469 days. Currently the mission of OTV-3 is underway, which has not yet been completed and it has been going on for 636 days.

Currently, Boeing is rebuilding the former Space Shuttle OPF-1 service center into a structure that can, according to company representatives, “provide landing, recovery process and re-launch into the X-37B shuttle space”. It is reported that the conversion process will be completed in the second quarter of next year. Thanks to this, the X-37B program can not only be continued, but also expanded. Relatively small and inexpensive spacecraft can be considered as effective means of conducting reconnaissance and bombers, which are able to deliver high-precision quick strikes on territories that are covered by powerful air defense systems.

According to other experts, another plausible option for using the X-37B spacecraft may be the interceptor function, which is able to inspect foreign space objects and, if necessary, destroy them with the help of kinetic effects. This X-37B designation would be consistent with the US National Space Policy adopted in 2006, according to which Washington reserves the right to partially extend its sovereignty to near-Earth space.

    I have a question. How to maneuver in space when the fuel runs out? A mini shuttle without fuel is just a companion. For space, you need a non-rocket and non-fuel engine. Otherwise, you will not fly far. Ion engines are weak. It turns out that he hangs out in space with a supply of fuel until he receives a command to maneuver. The question is how many tasks does he have enough fuel on board? This is what matters. And you can hang out in space for years and with the help of batteries. But only if they decide to destroy you, how far do you live on batteries and a rocket engine. Pseudo spaceship. The fuel supply to Mars and back is definitely not enough for him, so the author is wrong in this.

      I think the developers have thought everything through. This project, first of all, has military goals. Look at the rocket diagram. Why reduce the useful internal volume of this shuttle? Less cargo can be put into orbit. But, on the other hand, 2 warheads may well fit in its compartment.
      The author means the flight to Mars purely theoretically, in terms of time. For a manned flight, you will need a large ship. This is a no brainer. It cannot be launched from Earth. It will require assembly in orbit.

    "At the JSC Machine-Building Plant in Elektrostal, near Moscow, specialists assembled the first fuel element (TVEL) of a standard design for a space nuclear electric propulsion system (NPP). This was reported by the press service of the State Corporation Rosatom. The chief designer of the reactor plant is JSC NIKIET. The work is being carried out within the framework of the project “Creation of a transport and energy module based on a megawatt-class nuclear power plant.” According to Yuri Dragunov, director and general designer of NIKIET, according to the plan, the nuclear power plant should be ready in 2018, writes Lenta. , in terms of the scope of work of ROSATOM, everything is going according to plan, in accordance with the roadmap, "Dragunov said. It is planned to use the nuclear power plant for long-distance space flights and long-term work in orbit. In particular, the creation of this installation will dramatically reduce the time period, necessary for the Martian expedition. The NPP project was approved in 2009 by the Commission on modernization and technological development of the Russian economy under the President of Russia. The preliminary design was completed by 2012. This is a leap into the future. This engine will allow us to land first on Mars, and return back. This is a leap already in the 22nd century, a breakaway from everyone else. Today Russia is trying to dominate the space industry, new spaceports and rockets are being built. I hope we will be able to return the greatness of the once former Soviet cosmonautics "

          In January 1966, over the Spanish village of Palomares, while refueling in the air, at an altitude of 9000 meters, an American B-52 bomber and a KC-135 tanker collided. The planes instantly turned into one giant flaming ball, and meanwhile, there were four hydrogen bombs aboard the B-52. For some reason, one of them, safe and sound, fell in a field near the village. Non-nuclear fuses detonated two more, and fragments of the bomb, along with plutonium dust, arranged a small radioactive rain at the crash site. The fourth one fell off the coast, but where exactly? It is worth noting that the power of this lost bomb is 1000 times higher than the power of the one that leveled Hiroshima to the ground.

            The most expensive operation in the history of mankind to lift sunken property from the seabed lasted almost three months - from January 17 to April 7, 1966. 18 ships of the Navy took part in it and a total of 3800 people were employed. The costs associated with this operation amounted to 84 million dollars. Despite the complete technical success of the rescue operations, the reputation of the rescuer, which was played by the US government, was, as they say, seriously tarnished.

          Well, we had a plane with a nuclear reactor flying ...

          The development of this class of aircraft was carried out in the USSR and the USA in the middle of the XNUMXth century, but they were not brought to their logical conclusion, since it was not possible to solve the main problems of the aircraft.
          In the USSR and the USA, flight tests of aircraft with a nuclear reactor on board that were not connected to the engines: Tu-95 (Tu-95LAL) and B-36 (NB-36), respectively, were conducted. Flight tests were preceded by a series of ground tests, during which the effect of radioactive radiation on board equipment was studied. In the USSR, work was carried out jointly by the Flight Research Institute (LII) and the Institute of Atomic Energy (IAE). A series of flight tests with a working reactor were conducted at the Tu-95LAL, during which the control of the reactor in flight and the effectiveness of biological protection were studied. In the future, it was assumed the creation of engines running on nuclear power plants, however, due to the stop of the program, such engines were not created.
          The development programs for nuclear powered aircraft in the USA and the USSR were closed in the mid-1960s. Cheaper technologies have evolved: refueling in the air has deprived the project of the benefits of unlimited flight, and long-range ballistic missiles of high accuracy - the idea of a large bomber.
          In 2003, the U.S. Air Force military research laboratory funded the development of a nuclear engine for the Global Hawk unmanned reconnaissance aircraft in order to increase the flight duration to several months.

Let's hope that on the projects of reactors for submarines / icebreakers / destroyer, there will be enough base on which it will be possible to create a compact and lightweight reactor.

          And the very work of the NRE (of any type) in the atmosphere, at the start = DISASTER, is worse than Chernobyl

          US Transit-5BN-3 navigation satellite did not enter the planned orbit, collapsed and burned out in the atmosphere between 45 and 60 kilometers above the western Indian Ocean north of Madagascar. At the same time, he threw 950 grams of plutonium-238 with a total activity of about 17 thousand Ci (for comparison - the release of the Ri-238 was 20 times greaterthan during the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant).
          As a result, the contents of the the radionuclide in the near-Earth space has tripled.
          By November 1970, about 5 percent of discarded plutonium remained in the atmosphere, and soil analysis showed its presence on all continents of the Earth. A significant role in the extent of radioactive contamination of the earth's surface was played by the fact that plutonium fuel was in metallic form on the navigation satellite, which contributed to its more intense combustion and dispersion (SNL, 1964; SPACE NUCLEAR POWER, 1985).

    I think this is a prototype of a new generation striker. According to some estimates, the United States will receive a fully functional apparatus by 2030, allowing it to strike anywhere in Russia. Means of destruction are kinetic. In a 2x1 meter compartment, there are many of them. For example, an SM-3 interceptor missile with a kinetic warhead has a caliber of 343 ... 350 mm according to various sources. Consequently, the BCH itself is even smaller. And here are twenty or three such devices, with 6..10 warheads, for example, hanging in standby mode in orbit. They consume little. And at the X-hour ... These are means of constant readiness. Means of the first blow, and the inevitable blow. Are displayed and deployed in advance. And they hang themselves like a "Domoklov sword". The existing air defense systems will not save from such a strike. And our fathers - leaders most likely will not dare to neutralize the carriers in advance.

      At present, the United States is developing prototypes of various types of weapons based on the "Global Strike from Continental Territory" concept. Recently they wrote here about a ballistic launch vehicle flying far due to ricochets from the dense layers of the atmosphere. The very concept of an orbital-atmospheric flight apparatus requires the solution of a large number of practical problems, and, in my subjective opinion, sworn friends now approach their solution from different angles, accumulating new factual material.

    2010: Presidential Election in the Republic of Belarus 2010
    = Mass protest
    2012, equipment setup, test runs, in 2013 the beginning of the IRRADIATION (or pollination with chemicals) of the population of Ukraine.
    Ukrainians are almost completely transformed into ukrov (zombie tweak until the end of 2014)
    Ромvromaydan - a massive multi-month protest in the center of Kiev, started on November 21, 2013
    The ukrov war against Novorosia in 2014, the nation DOWNLOADS, without stopping.
    wink

    Worth thinking ...

    In the catalog of the US Strategic Command, the launched spacecraft received the name OTV-1 (Orbital Test Vehicle, orbital testing apparatus), number 36514 and international designation 2010-015A.
    The orbital elements on the OTV-1 and the Centaur stage were kept secret, and the location of the device remained unknown for a month. However, on May 23, the head of the international network of independent observers, Ted Molchan, announced the presence of OTV-1 in orbit with the following parameters:

    inclination - 39.99 °;
    minimum height - 399.2 km;
    maximum height -417.6 km;
    circulation period - 92.62 min.

    =========
    I do not have data on the parameters of the OTV-4 orbit, but judging by the Atlas launch vehicle and the SP on Cape Kanaverel, everything is the same
    ================================================== =
    approx. this is of course a joke, it was easier to launch chemicals into the water supply system of Ukraine ...

    But how to make a missile for the S-500 invisible to radar? The training target has been flying for 600 days. Or MiG-31 to bang? The resumption of production of the latter is already specifically heard.

      . Or with the MiG-31 bang?

      For this system, a rocket was never created, the "resumption" of the MiG-31 production will not give anything

    This is definitely a nuclear weapons delivery vehicle. And probably on combat duty.

    There was an agreement between the USSR and the USA on the ban on the placement of weapons in space ...

      Well, it was and it was, as far as I remember, they always concluded only agreements favorable to themselves, and even, let’s say, they didn’t abide by 100%, but here to refuse such a temptation to control everyone, so what!

    On a xomical topic, fresh! Based on the TV series "Sportsman":

    Guy - GAZedchik goes down the street, and shouts:
    “Yahweh was soaked again!”
    Nearby is a Baptist witness of Jehovah, in shock 6- (). He runs up to the guy, pays money, grabs a newspaper, and sees that under one headline an unscrupulous typesetter placed two articles.
    One begins "Again a 9-point tsunami covered the island of Java," the second: "Crazy Japanese claims that he saw the Loch Ness monster, the cabin of which disappeared into the vastness of the Indian Ocean."

    And about the weather: "On Jupiter, there is no hope that the raging hurricane for 500 years will subside. On Saturn, no change - the rain crystallizes and turns into snowflakes."

    And our engines, RD180 wink
    Enough to ban their export, and such pieces will be a strictly limited number
    And they’re just about to start creating their engine (maybe they’ve already begun, but recently), even if they do, then they will need to adapt it, re-test it and so on, and a lot of time is needed.

    Of course, this thing is hanging around in vain for nothing, but it has no strategic goal, strength is small. But grazing and breaking satellites (the same electronic warfare system) is quite likely. There are others besides this thing:

    The Red Dragon project is a landing module, which theoretically can be delivered to Mars by 2018. At the company's suggestion, he should deliver equipment to the Red Planet to collect samples and return them to Earth. Unfortunately, as of the fall of 2013, NASA has no plans to finance this project due to budgetary constraints. However, SpaceX already has a number of profitable contracts with NASA
    Dream Chaser is an apparatus for vertical take-off and horizontal aerodynamic landing; it can deliver up to 7 people to low Earth orbit. Launches are planned to be made using the Atlas-5 launch vehicle. It is also worth noting that the ship can also be used for suborbital flight - for space tourism.

    Nothing new. In 1960, work was carried out on a similar project in the USSR and a little earlier in the USA. Both sides, after the defeat of the Third Reich, became interested in the work of the former Nazi inventor Eigen Senger, or rather his ambitious and innovative project of his time, but never realized, Silbervogel, that is, the Silver Bird. Stalin even instructed his son Vasily and future traitor defector Grigory Tokaev to steal Senger and send him to Moscow, but then after studying the drawings they simply refused this idea. And the project was entrusted to the future Doctor of Technical Sciences, General Designer of OJSC NPO Molniya, Major General Gleb Evgenievich Lozino-Lozinsky. But the work, unfortunately, was not finally completed, since Lozino-Lozinsky was appointed the lead developer and chief designer of MTKK Buran, including other designers working on the Spiral who had to work on Buran. Nevertheless, the work on the spiral can be considered successful, since it was already at the final stage. Several unmanned prototype unmanned prototypes visited and returned to Earth, and the experience gained in the development of Spirals helped to successfully build and successfully launch Buran into Space. For the Americans, work on their “X-20 Dyna Soar” ended in nothing, and even despite the subsequent successful launches of Space Shuttle, the space fighter project was never implemented. And then the USSR collapsed and the American secret hunters settled in the Russian design bureaus, in particular the Boeing corporation’s designer, for more than a year they didn’t get out of the storages, storerooms and experimental airfield of the Central Research Institute of the 30th Air Force until they thoroughly studied everything about the Spiral. And now they are launching prototypes. The same thing happened with their F 35, but there they just bought all the drawings of Yak and built this stolen plane in their shell.
