The US Army will enter the system of recognition of terrorists
A portable device is able to determine if a person is in a radius of about a hundred meters, weapon and explosives, or his intentions purely peaceful.
Suicide bombers often undermine themselves at roadblocks or checkpoints at the entrance to a building. They can approach a close distance ostensibly for inspection and, having destroyed themselves, can cause the death of several more people. Now shahid will have much less chances to do it, Pentagon officials are sure.
The other day, the US defense department signed a contract with the subsidiary of SAIC Science, Engineering and Technology Corporation (SET) for $ 48,2 million. These funds will be used to provide army units with CounterBomber devices, which are expected to be introduced by June 2014.
The device is a set of equipment mounted on a tripod. Its regular and infrared video cameras automatically detect an approaching person, after which the target is scanned with a radar and the reflected waves are analyzed by a computer.
A detailed recognition algorithm is a trade secret, or, as SAIC Development Director Rick Thornton put it, a “secret ingredient.” In general, the following happens: the returned radio signal is compared with the “normal” responses stored in the database (models of people of different height and build without a weapon), and in case of inconsistency, the device generates a visual and audible alarm.
Mr. Thornton declined to give the percentage of false positives, but, according to him, it is significantly lower than in airport detectors (about 40%). Another advantage is the ability to detect any type of explosive device, and among artisanal crafts, organic materials are often indistinguishable with the help of other technologies.
The cost of one CounterBomber is $ 300 thousand. Test samples are already serving in more than 40 points in Afghanistan and Iraq, but how much their number should increase after the execution of the contract is unknown.
