9K115-2 Metis-M anti-tank missile system

The portable anti-tank missile system 9K115-2 "Metis-M" is designed to destroy modern and promising armored vehicles equipped with dynamic protection, fortifications, enemy manpower, at any time of the day, in difficult weather conditions.

It is created on the basis of ATGM Metis. The concept of modernization consisted of maximum continuity in ground-based means and ensuring the possibility of using in the complex both the standard Metis 9M115 missile and the new modernized 9M131 missile. Given the prospects for increased security tanks designers decisively increased the dimension of the warhead, moving from a caliber of 93mm to a caliber of 130mm. A significant improvement in the performance characteristics was achieved due to an increase in the mass and dimensions of ATGMs.

The Metis-M complex was developed at the Instrument Design Bureau (the city of Tula) and was put into service in the 1992 year.

Designed to replace previously created complexes of the second generation "Metis", "Fagot", "Competition". In the west, the complex received the designation AT-13 "Saxhorn".

The complex includes:

- launcher 9P151 with a sight - a pointing device, pointing drives and a missile launch mechanism;

- thermal sight 1PN86BVI "Mulat-115";

- 9М131 missiles, housed in transport-launch containers.

- test equipment 9ВХNUMXМ and 12В9М;

The wings of the 9М131 rocket are made of thin sheets of steel and unfold after launch under the action of their own elastic forces. As well as in the 9М115 “Metis” rocket, the adopted technical solutions, in particular the placement of the tracer at the tip of one of the three wing consoles, made it possible to abandon the use of gyro instruments, onboard batteries and electronic components. During the flight of the rocket, the tracer moves in a spiral, the ground equipment receives information about the angular position of the ATGM and corrects commands issued via the wire communication line to the rocket controls.

1 - precharge tandem warhead;
2 - semi-open air-dynamic drive;
3 - aerodynamic steering wheels;
4 - propulsion;
5 - channel for the cumulative jet;
6 - the main charge of the tandem warhead;
7 - wings;
8 - tracer;
9 - coil with wire;
10 - starting engine;

The new powerful tandem cumulative warhead of the ATGM of the complex is capable of striking all modern and future enemy tanks, including those equipped with mounted and built-in dynamic protection, lightly armored vehicles, fortifications. Moreover, a high level of pressure that occurs during penetration in both axial and radial directions leads to the fragmentation of concrete in the area of the cumulative jet, breaking the back layer of the barrier and, as a result, high prohibitive action. This ensures the defeat of manpower behind objects from concrete monoliths or in precast concrete structures with wall thickness up to 3 meters.

In order to expand the range of combat use of the Metis-M complex, the 9М131F guided missiles are equipped with a thermobaric warhead weighing 4.95kg with a high-explosive effect at the level of a large-caliber artillery projectile, especially effective when firing at engineering and fortification facilities. With the explosion of such a warhead, a shock wave is more extended in time and space than in traditional explosives. Such a wave propagates in all directions, flows over obstacles, into trenches, through embrasures, etc., striking manpower, even protected by shelter. In the zone of detonation transformations of the thermobaric mixture, the complete burnout of oxygen occurs and the temperature above 800 ° С develops.

Launched on a tripod, the launcher can be equipped with a 1PN86-MULAT-115 thermal imaging sight with 5.5kg mass, which can detect targets at a range of 3.2km and identify them at a range of 1.6km, which ensured launch of rockets at night for maximum range. The dimensions of the 387 * 203 * 90mm thermal imager. Field of view 2.4 ° * 4.6 °. The battery life is 2 hours. Application temperature range from -40 ° С to + 50 ° С. In order to increase the operability in the sight, a cylinder-based cooling system is used, which ensures that the 8-10c goes beyond the regime

The rocket is launched using a starter engine, after which a sustained solid propellant rocket motor is launched

The calculation of the complex consists of two people, one of which carries a N1 bag weighing 25.1kg with a launcher and one container with a missile, and the other N2 pack with two containers with a 28 rocket weighing kg (instead of three for the Metis). When replacing TPK with a rocket on a thermal imager, the weight of the pack decreases to 18.5kg. The deployment of the complex to the combat position is carried out for 10-20, the combat rate of fire reaches 3 rounds per minute.

Along with the main purpose - the use as a portable complex, Metis-M can also be used to arm BMD and BMP.

Shooting can be conducted from prepared and unprepared positions from the prone position, from the standing trench, and also from the shoulder. Shooting is also possible from buildings (in the latter case, about 2 meters of free space are required behind the launcher).
