In the United States successfully conducted tests of railgun

The US Navy conducted a test of the railgun - a gun, the acceleration of a projectile in which is imparted by electrical impulses, reports Lenta.ru citing Defense News. The tests that took place on 10 December 2010 of the year were considered successful. New weapon it is planned to install on promising warships of the US Navy, including the destroyers of the project DDG-1000 Zimwalt.
A test of new weapons was held at the US Navy Dahlgren Surface Weapons Development Center. Weapons check was carried out on megajoule power in 33. According to the calculations of the US Navy, such power allows you to shoot a metal projectile at a distance of 203,7 kilometers, and at the end point the disc accelerates to five Mach numbers (5,6 thousands of kilometers per hour).
The test of the railgun was a record - the power of the gun was three times higher than the same figure achieved during the first test in January 2008. This indicator also became the largest for all history developing similar weapons in the world. It is still unknown when the US Navy intends to complete the creation of a promising electromagnetic gun.
A railgun is a gun that uses electromagnetic force to accelerate an electrically conductive projectile, which in the first launch phase is part of an electrical circuit. The gun got its name thanks to two contact rails, between which the projectile moves in contact with them. At present, the use of weapons on warships is impossible, since a significant amount of energy is required for a shot, the accuracy of shooting is not great yet, and the device itself is too large.
