Weapon market, "Top-100" from SIPRI
First of all, SIPRI employees note a slight contraction of the market. Although over the period from 2002, the total volume of the military-technical market grew by one and a half times, in 2011, arms sales decreased in monetary terms by about 5% compared to 2010 year. There are several reasons for this. These are financial problems of various countries, which do not allow to increase or even save current defense costs, this is a revision of defense doctrines, etc. In addition, changes in the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq have affected the reduction in the production and sale of armaments. In recent years, despite regular clashes and battles, the situation in these countries has slowly but surely returned to normal. As a result, ammunition consumption and loss of weapons or equipment are reduced. Finally, several billions of dollars from the market were “stolen” by sanctions against some countries, for example, Libya.
The distribution of market shares among companies in different countries has changed, but in general has remained the same. So, 44 firms from the United States that are in the rating, produce about 60% of the total quantity of weapons sold by all participating companies "Top-100". Another 29% accounts for three dozen Western European organizations. It is noteworthy that, in addition to the one hundred most successful companies, 19 firms were included in the rating “out of competition”. The fact is that they are structural units of larger corporations and corporations, but at the same time they themselves have rather large revenues. They do not have their own places in the ranking, and their location in the summary table is determined in accordance with the level of income.
The first three "Top-100" from SIPRI for several years does not undergo major changes. In 2011, the American corporation Lockheed Martin earned the most, selling military products to 36,27 a billion US dollars. It is worth noting that military products provide 78% of all income "Lockheed-Martin". The American company Boeing rose to second place in 2011 with an income of 31,83 billion ("military" revenues - 46% of the total). Three leaders close the British from BAE Systems. This concern earned more than three billion dollars less than in 2011 in 2010, and as a result 29,15's billion dollars in revenue did not allow it to retain second place. BAE Systems Inc. turned out to be the most successful structural unit of a larger company in 2011. - The British branch of the international giant from third place in the general list. With revenue of 13,56 billion, this organization could rank ninth in the Top 100.
Only eight Russian companies were in the top hundred defense enterprises and their structural divisions. The best of them - United Aircraft Corporation - has risen from 21-th (2010 year) to 18-th place, having sold for 2011 a year of production on 4,44 billion dollars. The Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern is almost a billion dollars behind: with an annual income of 3,66 billion, it dropped by two places and stopped at the 22 position. "Helicopters of Russia", in turn, increased sales and with an income of 2,56 billion rose to 40-th place. United Engine Corporation, earning 1,33 billion, firmly takes place 60, slightly improving its position. The biggest growth of all Russian companies in 2011 was Nizhny Tagil Uralvagonzavod. Over the year, his income increased from 730 to 1200 million dollars. Such a jump helped to rise from 91 to 64-e (!) Place in the overall ranking. The list of Russian independent organizations in the "Top-100" from SIPRI closes the concern "Radio Engineering and Information Systems". His income in 1,05 billion dollars provided 69 a place in the ranking. It is worth noting that the concern first hit the list of the best manufacturers of military products.
The most successful of the Russian companies that are part of larger organizations was the company Sukhoi. Thanks sale aviation equipment with a total value of 2,63 billion dollars, this company could be in 39th place in the rating. Irkut Corporation, like Sukhoi, which is part of the United Aircraft Corporation, earned 2011 billion in 1070 and could have moved the Radio Engineering and Information Systems concern out of 69 places.
In total, Russian companies trapped in Top 100 sold 2011 a year for weapons and military equipment for 12,94 billion dollars, which is 1,7 billion more than in the previous year 2010. As you can see, last year’s success in the sale of weapons was due to a gradual increase in both government procurement and export contracts. The current trend is even more evident in the next report on the one hundred best weapons manufacturers, which will describe the situation on the market in the past 2012 year. However, this report will appear only in a year, since the quality of the analysis is directly related to the time spent.
Probably, Russian companies will improve their positions in “Top 100” for 2012 a year, but we cannot talk about entering the top ten yet. First of all, because all the revenues of Russian organizations for 2011 year are at the level of companies ranking in ninth and tenth places. It is unlikely that any of the Russian united corporations will be able to achieve the same performance over the course of a couple of years, which almost the entire industry provides. At the same time, it is worth noting that almost all companies from the first 10-20 rating places have contracts with the armed forces of the United States and NATO countries. Despite all the cuts, these states still continue to pour a lot of money into their defense, which is why supplier companies maintain consistently high incomes. As a result, seven of the top ten companies are based in the United States, the country with the largest military budget in the world.
Unfortunately, SIPRI's Top 100 does not take into account the achievements of Chinese defense enterprises. According to various estimates, the same corporation Norinco could claim a place not lower than the twentieth. However, China has traditionally classified all the details of its rearmament, including financial ones. Therefore, Norinco, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation or China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, with all its high potential, do not participate in the overall ranking. In addition to China, other countries are noted in the notes to the overall rating, for example of which Kazakhstan and Ukraine are cited. According to SIPRI analysts, these states have large defense enterprises with a good income. However, these companies do not publish enough data and, like Chinese ones, cannot be included in the ranking of the hundred best firms.
Overall trading results weapons in the 2011 year, the current trend continues with no major changes. Total sales figures are rising or falling slightly, and only two companies can boast of a large jump in the rating for several dozen places: the Russian Uralvagonzavod and the Japanese Kawasaki Heavy Industries. As for new players in the market, only eight companies were included in the top 100 in 2011, including one in Russia. So, while reducing the overall volume, the market for weapons and military equipment in 2011 almost did not change. Under certain circumstances, this phenomenon may turn into a serious trend, which, in turn, is fully capable of helping manufacturers of a particular country to increase their market share and revenues.
