The pilots of the Kursk air base of the Russian Air Force successfully mastered the MiG-29SMT fighters, which had previously been planned to be delivered to the Algerian Air Force, spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry’s press service Colonel Vladimir Drik told Interfax AVN.

"The Kursk airbase showed the highest level of combat training at the end of the year: by flying hours, by the number of aircrews retrained to MiG-29CMT fighters (total 100%) and based on the results of combat training from aerodromes of dispersal," - said V. Drik.

According to him, it was noted at a meeting of the military council of the Operational and Strategic Command of the Aerospace Defense (USK EKR, former names - Moscow District Air Force and Air Defense, Special Purpose Command), where the results of combat training in 2010 were summed up.

The MiG-29SMT is a qualitatively new version of the MiG-29 light front-line fighter. He has in his arsenal a wide range of various air-to-air and air-to-surface aviation weapons. The aircraft is capable with high efficiency to perform tasks for the destruction of both air and ground and sea targets. As a result of the modernization, the combat effectiveness of the MiG-29CMT increased by an average of 29 compared to the base MiG-3, and the operating cost decreased by about 40%.

The contract between Algeria and Rosoboronexport for the supply of 34 MiG-29CMT was concluded in the 2006 year. Its cost, according to unofficial data, amounted to 28 billion. Having received in 2006-2007. 15 aircraft, Algeria ceased acceptance, stating a number of identified faults, after that the aircraft was decided to return the Russian Federation. In the middle of last year, it was reported that the “Algerian” MiG-29 would be bought by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, paying 23 billion rubles for them.
