Bulat series drone detectors
Detector "Bulat" 3 versions

The fight against an enemy unmanned aerial vehicle begins with its detection. To solve this problem, various means can be used, incl. specialized radio reconnaissance stations. Thus, since last year, units of the Russian army have been actively using Bulat series UAV detectors produced by the 3mx company. They allow you to timely identify an air threat and take the necessary measures.

Four options

The Moscow company "3mx" began its activities in the recent past and is one of the many young organizations involved in the development of advanced electronics for troops. During its existence, the company has developed, introduced and brought to production several electronic reconnaissance and electronic warfare systems.

At the end of March 2023, 3mx announced the completion of the development of the Bulat UAV detector. By that time, the new product had passed the necessary tests, and the company began organizing production. The first production batch of detectors was ready by the end of spring, and at the very beginning of June it went to the customer. Subsequently, the production of such products continued in the interests of various customers. As reported, orders are coming from different regions of the country.

Already in the summer they presented a modified version of Bulat. The second version differed in design and software, which achieved advantages over the basic product. In the shortest possible time, a new modification of the detector was brought to production and delivered to customers.

In December, the third version of Bulat was presented. This time there was a more serious revision. In this project, the circuit design was changed and the software was rewritten, the interface was updated and new functions were provided. In addition, a product verification service has appeared, which allows you to distinguish an original product from a fake.

Additional detector module

On February 1, RT published new interesting information from 3mx. The company's development director, Sergei Shandobylo, told the publication that development of the next fourth modification of Bulat is already underway. This project is being created based on the operating experience of previous products, as well as taking into account the wishes of users participating in the Special Operation to protect Donbass.

The development company has already explained what functions the new modification of the detector may have. However, the timing of its appearance cannot yet be announced. The pace of development of the detector family suggests that production of the next system will begin within the next few months.

Equipment at the front

As new modifications of Bulat are created, the 3mx company carries out the necessary factory tests. In addition, cooperation has been established with the defense department. It is reported that the detector has been tested by the Main Directorate of Innovative Development of the Ministry of Defense. The product was highly praised, but it was recommended to expand the operating frequency ranges.

With all this, the Bulat system has not yet been adopted by the Russian army, and there is no state order for production and delivery. However, the army is already using such equipment with all its might. Procurement and supply of detectors are carried out by private organizations, groups of enthusiasts and some government agencies. The purchased devices are sent to certain parts of the army and are used for their intended purpose.

According to RT, to date, our army has received more than 3 thousand Bulat products, and production continues. To meet all the needs of the armed forces, many times more such equipment is required. Thus, to equip one army-level formation, about 20 thousand detectors are needed.

The first batch of serial Bulats, shipped to customers in June 2023.

The 3mx company is ready to produce thousands of new devices. To do this, it will need to expand production, hire new specialists, etc.

In a compact body

It is reported that the first version of the Bulat product was developed on the basis of one of the wearable radio stations available on the market. It underwent some modifications and received new software, after which it began to solve other problems. Last year, 3mx even published a video demonstrating the process of converting a commercial radio into a UAV detector.

This approach simplified development and production, but led to limitations in operating ranges. To scan additional frequencies, an additional module had to be created and put into production. This system architecture was retained in the second and third versions of Bulat, but in the new fourth modification it is abandoned. The promising device will solve all problems independently.

In appearance and ergonomics, the Bulat product is similar to a walkie-talkie. It is made in a compact rectangular case with dimensions of 120 x 60 x 34 mm. On top there is a connector for installing one of the two supplied antennas and some controls. The front panel contains the screen and keyboard. Assembled weight – less than 300 g.

During operation, the detector automatically scans the airwaves within the operating ranges and searches for radio channels used by unmanned systems. When a signal is detected, the type is determined based on its characteristic features. drone. This information, as well as the detected frequency and time of detection, are displayed on the screen; a sound and light signal is also given. The add-on module works in a similar way, but has simplified controls and no screen.

Detectors being tested. All devices detected the drone and issued an alert “DJI UAV detected”

The latest version 3 of Bulat has several operating modes. The device can track and detect all types of UAVs, or search only for FPV strike drones. In the latter case, the detector allows not only to detect an air target, but also to identify an approaching threat in time and take action.

The detector is capable of detecting the presence of UAVs of various types, primarily the most popular foreign-made models. Such targets are detected at distances of up to 1,5 km. The device works only for reception and does not unmask itself with radiation.

Bulat is equipped with two batteries with a capacity of 9200 mW. One battery lasts for 5 hours of operation. Replacement takes minimal time, after which the device can continue to operate. The additional module uses a smaller battery, but it provides 8 hours of operation.

Security questions

Light reconnaissance and strike drones pose a known danger to troops and must be protected from. Moreover, as the experience of the current Special Operation shows, the means of detecting, intercepting and suppressing UAVs must be massive and widespread. If this condition is met, all known risks can be reduced to a minimum.

In the counter-UAV system, a special place is occupied by reconnaissance and detection of air targets - products of the Bulat series from the 3mx company belong to this class. Bulat drone detectors are capable of scanning specified ranges and searching for radio channels used by enemy equipment. As practice shows, they successfully solve this problem and also demonstrate several positive qualities.

First of all, it is necessary to note the dimensions and weight of the Bulat. These devices were built on the basis of walkie-talkies and therefore turned out to be compact and lightweight. Carrying and using such a device does not create additional difficulties for the fighter. At the same time, detection of a wide range of unmanned targets of all main classes at a sufficiently long range is ensured.

Based on the characteristic features of the radio signal, Bulat determines the type of UAV and notifies the operator. Information about the target model and operating frequency facilitates further interception or jamming of the target. To solve such a problem, almost any weapon or electronic warfare system can be used.

One of many

The potential and prospects of UAVs, as well as the need to create means to combat them, do not raise questions. In this regard, the domestic defense industry, represented by recognized industry leaders and new companies, has taken up the development of various countermeasures, suppression and interception systems. To date, a large number of such systems have been brought into production and are being delivered to the troops.

The specifics of current combat operations require the widespread implementation and use of various UAV protection systems. Since last year, the 3mx company has been actively participating in such processes with its Bulat series detectors and other devices. She has already supplied several thousand of her products to the army and is not going to stop there. Other organizations are also producing new devices, and the industry is working together to improve the protection of troops from UAVs.

Apparently, damask steel is a means of individual use. Let's think about it.
    1.600000 / zoo = 200.....1 damask steel for 200 people......they simply don’t exist.
    2. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is in no hurry to purchase a new product....why transfer the Ministry of Defense money to a third-party private organization? It’s easier to wait until the co-opists from the defense industry steal someone else’s new product and repeat it....the hell with it, it’s worse and without subsequent improvements....but in large quantities.
    3. These are volunteers carrying damask steel to the forehead. The aerial unmanned war has not yet reached the Russian Federation.
here they can’t figure it out with a long-range self-propelled gun......and here the damask steel gets tangled underfoot.
    will wait......

    Yesterday the Military Chronicle writes:
The enemy also published a video in which he attacks our advancing formations near Novomikhailovka with FPV drones on January 30 (47.806960 37.428068) - 9 units of lost equipment, half of which are MTLB. This indicates a complete lack of adequate trench electronic warfare in our advancing formations.
The systems supplied to the troops, such as "Groza" and others (recent video with Razvedos) of the directional and dome type, cannot correct the situation. In 2 cases out of 3, this problem arises from the lack of a full-time electronic warfare specialist in the units. There is equipment, but you can work it or not.

The lack of staff for drones, for example, plays a bad role in the battles for Krynki and the islands. Even when enemy infantry is destroyed by drops from drones and FPVs, it is written on top that the targets were destroyed by artillery. Drones out of state.

The first UAV flight of the Ukrainian Armed Forces into the Nizhny Novgorod region. Yesterday, UAVs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces fell between the populated areas of Chernukha and Starye Klyuchishchi. The warhead did not detonate.
Near the crash site there is the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery and the RusVinyl and Sibur-Kstovo petrochemical plants. Also in the region there is the Savasleika airbase, from which MiG-31 fighters fly to carry out missions in the northwestern military zone.

This actually killed me! A young Moscow company in the singular wants to saddle government orders, and simply purchases, for the Northern Military District?
Why view those who try to do something like this to help our fighters as competitors? On the contrary, we need to cooperate with everyone who is trying to help in the SVO! It turns out that for Muscovites this is pure business (a simple conversion of Chinese walkie-talkies) and earning money?

And what kind of original product is there, when there is a basis for Chinese products?

Why view those who try to do something like this to help our fighters as competitors?

The quality of a fake is always worse. Everyone has problems. The manufacturer suffers image losses - it takes a long time to build a reputation, but it is lost very quickly. Losses on the LBS increase if, for example, the UAV is detected not 1,5 km away, but closer, and there is no time left to respond.
I have encountered the problem of counterfeit products more than once in my production. As a rule, such manufacturers do not compete because of the wrong production volumes.
Only one positive aspect of counterfeiting can be noted - if your products start to be counterfeited, that means you have established yourself as an excellent manufacturer. laughing

Intellectually, this device should not only detect the approach of a UAV, but also the direction of approach. So that you can both meet and hide correctly.
To do this, you need a receiving directional antenna, as in “fox hunting”. If it is built into a helmet, or attached to existing models of helmets, then the fighter, turning his head, will be able to determine the direction and visually detect the drone faster.

The human body, as an obstacle, noticeably weakens the radio signal, at least at high frequencies. If the detector is mounted, say, on the chest and has a detailed indication of the signal level, then by turning the body you can determine the approximate direction. but even an alarm about an increase in signal level already indicates the approach of a drone. which is much better than finding out about him when he threw something on his head.

Yes, it would be nice to have this indication in the form of a beeper of some kind in a helmet. The louder, the closer the drone.

I tried periodically looking at the sky with a helmet on while running - 4 cervical hernias while running short distances. I can’t lift 10 kg with my right hand - the roots are crushed. Now I'm getting my fourth blockade. I inject three painkillers per day, mostly at night.

It’s good, of course, that Bulat, or whatever they call him, warns. A group moves forward, let’s say for a task, then kamikaze drones appear Bulat warns people begin to hide the task is slowed down people are demoralized because the drones will hit and a reconnaissance drone will aim the kamikaze at the cover. Or a group through Bulat discovered a reconnaissance drone, it doesn’t move anywhere, like, well, we won’t go anywhere, not everyone, not every unit has electronic warfare protection from Drones, I’m talking about the fact that we need mass protection from Drones, which is called short-range electronic warfare, which we don’t have There are no scientific institutes left for electronics that they make reb from Chinese alterations, changing the name or modernizing it in their own way. You need a compact electronic device that will work in automatic mode and scan the cleanliness of a particular drone and extinguish it, and if it is impossible to extinguish all the cleanliness, then extinguish the video image of the drone, are there really no people in the State who can create an effective, reliable, fail-safe short-range protection system against Drones? And all this is needed yesterday, or they will outstrip us in this and we will have unacceptable losses from this threat

There are no standard means of detecting UAVs at the front! There is something that they themselves have concocted either through humanitarian aid, or by chipping in some money and purchasing it.

This is a dead end branch. The drones of the near future (they say the months are counting) will be equipped with AI and will not emit anything. Detectors should be made on the basis of video cameras with AI, approximately the same as those installed on drones, but they will not recognize enemy tanks, but drones in the sky. And don’t say that it’s complicated and expensive: a board with a neuroprocessor with ALI costs 3000 rubles, a pair of high-definition video cameras + -10 thousand, plus assembly and placement in a case.

      will not emit anything

WWII planes also did not emit anything. Usually. Some of them didn’t even have radar or radio stations.
But they were still found by radar.
If anything, then any object in the universe emits something, or at least reflects. And light, there is also heat, and sound, and vibrations are all waves of the same nature, only of different frequencies and lengths.
If the drone exists, then it can be found.

Instead of rubles there are dollars, and maybe this can be collected. I’ll say right away, you just don’t need a camera. Just a thermal imager. Everything has already been tried and done.

If the range is really 1.5 km, then it’s a useful thing; the fighters will have 2-3 minutes to take cover. On the other hand, in some areas of the front there are already so many dorons flying that if you react like an ostrich to every signal, you will have to spend your whole life in a dugout.

I don’t know how it’s supposed to work with the definition, but from the experience of operating a bottom device, I can say that it’s complete junk, which makes a heart-rending squeal every three to five minutes. The writing on the screen is beautiful. UAV detected! On a red background, a fairy tale!!! At the same time, there is no UAV... I remember the boy who scared everyone with a wolf...

The key point in the article: "... the Bulat system has not yet been adopted by the Russian army, and there is no state order for production and supply."
During the Second World War, the La - 5 fighter passed factory tests in five flight days, and flew and fought, and according to many experts, the La - 5 and its modifications were recognized as the best Soviet fighters of the Second World War. Why is this so - yes, because there was someone to mercilessly put pressure on the bureaucrats.

You need to have at least a rough determination of the direction to the drone. It can be done. You just need not one, but four whip antennas. They come out vertically from the receiver and each is placed in its own vertical corner (90 degrees) sector screen, each of which is connected by load-bearing ribs into one whole, covering the entire azimuthal circle (360 degrees). Thus, each of the four antennas receives a signal from its own direction of 90 degrees. Then the signals from each opposite antenna are sent to their detectors, and then to the amplitude subtractor. Thus, we will have two difference signals, which in turn are sent to another amplitude subtractor. And this output signal will show us the direction to the drone with an accuracy of approximately 90 degrees. Of course, the more antennas, the higher the accuracy, but the design is more complex. For now, a fairly rough determination of the direction to the drone. And most importantly, this is not difficult to implement with the receiver that you already have.

Now about the fact that it is more difficult to suppress the drone’s control signal with interference. Although this has worked successfully before. It is concluded that a wider range of control frequencies has begun to be used. Maybe you are right. But it is possible to make it more difficult for interference to suppress the drone’s control signal not by expanding the range of frequencies used, but by using software tuning the control signal emission frequency. The continuously transmitted control signal is divided into packets, each of which is emitted and received at a specific frequency. Each packet emitted at its own frequency contains a code at the end that tells the receiver at what frequency the next packet of control signals will be emitted. The reconnaissance receiver must learn to isolate this code of the subsequent frequency of the drone's control signal and synchronously emit its interference at the same frequency.

I watched a video where Bulat saved the lives of a unit. But with the massive use of UAVs of various types and classes, the detector is not enough. We need electronic warfare with search and suppression of the control frequency and/or video transmission. But if there is an autonomous flight system without GPS and radiation sources, to- and will search for, identify and attack objects on its own, then fire means of influencing the UAV are needed.
    Preferably managed.

It would be nice to hear feedback from SVO participants about this product.
For example, how about Combat Aura Dome 10, from the sergeant of the 14th Armored Troops of the LPR "Ghost" Andrey Morozov, known on the Internet under the pseudonyms "Fighting cat Murz" or simply "Murz".
    May he rest in peace.

This is all palliative. When such a detector is triggered, it is unclear whose drone it is. For a full-fledged war using drones, it is necessary to solve the main and fundamental issue - the identification of "friends and foes". Without resolving this issue, neither normal electronic warfare suppression nor the destruction of “not our own” drones is possible. The one who is the first to solve the problem of drone selection will receive such an advantage.

Dear Kirill Ryabov! If you wanted to advertise the company “3mx”, I think you gave it, I think, not quite the right “advertising”, taking into account the intensification of the activities of various Ukroreich DRGs on our territory... I’m not sure that this company can afford significant funds for the protection of personnel and production... I think that you understand that there is a war going on and certain actions are needed to protect those who work in its interests and quite successfully and fruitfully! Believe me, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukroreich carefully reads and VO, “fishing out” bit by bit. necessary information...
