Detector shots: snipers will not go unnoticed

The UK Department of Defense has ordered Boomerang Warrior-X detectors to carry out field tests for urgent field needs. First time in stories A soldier will receive a compact individual device for detecting a disguised adversary firing from a small weapons.

After numerous ground tests of various wearable shot detection systems, the British military chose the Raytheon Boomerang Warrior-X system as the most compliant to the requirements and conditions of the battlefield. The device showed less than one percent of false positives and the ability to detect more than 95% of all supersonic ammunition.

In many ways, success was determined by the successful application in Iraq and Afghanistan of a similar Boomerang III system, which is deployed on more than 5 thousand vehicles. It allows the crew to quickly determine where the fire is coming from and to react adequately to the threat. Due to the use of this detector in combination with a significant superiority of the coalition troops in firepower, the rebels have actually lost the ability to conduct continuous shelling with disguised positions with impunity.

Boomerang detects a bullet on a supersonic wave and almost instantly calculates and gives direction to the enemy firing point and also indicates its height. Thus, the system operator knows the approximate location of the sniper, even before he leaves the position.

Detector shots: snipers will not go unnoticed

However, until now the foot fighter remained practically unprotected before firing from a long distance - it is sometimes difficult to detect the direction of shooting, and in the conditions of mountains, city and shooting from several directions it is almost impossible to neutralize the enemy in time or to hide. The vulnerability of foot patrols proved conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The problem with roadside bombs was partially resolved with the help of explosion-proof MRAP machines, but the soldier still has to spend a long time trying to determine where the enemy is hiding.

The Boomerang Warrior-X is a compact system that mounts on standard tactical vests. A set of equipment weighs about 311 grams. Included system in the case of detection of a flying bullet gives a warning signal to the headphones and instantly displays detailed information about the location of the shooter on the display the size of a matchbox. The system is also able to compensate for the movement of a soldier and constantly updates the location of the threat. The coordinates of enemy firing points can be overlaid on the map and give the unit commander full situational awareness of the enemy’s positions.

In general, the Boomerang Warrior-X provides reliability and the same performance and functionality as the Boomerang III systems designed for installation on vehicles.

Wearable shot detectors significantly expand the capabilities of a soldier and reduce his dependence on powerful surveillance systems in military equipment. Boomerang Warrior-X should significantly increase the effectiveness of infantry operations and reduce losses.
