Anti-UAV "Rat" complex

The first version of the Rat complex with laser weapons at Army 2020
The Russian defense industry is actively working on the creation of various means of countering unmanned aerial vehicles. aviation systems, and regularly presents new examples of this kind. Several years ago, the Ruselectronics holding first showed the multifunctional complex “Rat”, and recently presented its new version. Due to their characteristic appearance, both products are distinguished by high mobility and should show high performance and combat characteristics.
Perspective sample
A promising mobile multifunctional anti-UAV complex was created at the Istok Research and Production Enterprise named after. A.I. Shokin (Fryazino) from the Ruselectronics holding (Rostec state corporation). This organization is one of the key enterprises of the domestic radio-electronic industry and has extensive experience in creating military and dual-use systems.
A multifunctional complex for combating unmanned aircraft with the code “Rat” was first shown at the military-technical forum “Army-2020”. Then a prototype with an unusual composition of instruments and devices was demonstrated at the exhibition site. The main features of the complex and tactical and technical characteristics were also revealed.
Subsequently, the “Rat” complex was tested, based on the results of which it was refined and improved. In addition, the development of a new modification with a different composition of equipment and other combat capabilities was underway.

Modification of "Rati" with an artillery combat module at Army 2023
Two versions of the Rat product with different weapon systems were shown at the recent Army 2023 forum. Both samples were demonstrated in the form of full-fledged experimental products with the full range of necessary equipment and equipment. The complex with its updated appearance and composition again attracted the attention of exhibition visitors and specialists.
It is unknown at what stage the Rat project is now. Probably, the necessary tests are ongoing in different conditions, based on the results of which the design is improved and the identified shortcomings are corrected. We can expect that the new multifunctional complex will appear at the next specialized exhibitions, and then there will be messages about its adoption. The only question is the timing of such developments.
Two options
The Rat product is a self-propelled complex with a set of various equipment designed to detect and track small-sized complex air targets. In addition, it has its own weapons to destroy the found object. At the same time, the development organization offers two weapon options at once, capable of effectively hitting unmanned targets or other objects.
Both versions of the Rat complex are built on the basis of the SBA-70K4 armored vehicle. This vehicle has a voluminous armored body that protects the crew and equipment from small arms fire. weapons, fragments and explosive devices weighing several kilograms. A diesel engine with optimal power allows the car to accelerate on the highway to 90 km/h and travel over rough terrain.

Electronic and optical means on the roof of "Rati"
Target equipment and weapons are located inside and outside the armored car body. So, on the roofs of cars there are antenna devices for radars and other systems, weapons, etc. Inside the armored vehicle there are means of power supply to the systems, the necessary electronics and the operator’s workplace.
A lifting mast with a detection radar antenna is mounted in the rear part of the hull. The station monitors the airspace around the complex and looks for potential threats. Small UAVs, incl. popular models, are detected and taken for escort at a distance of approx. 4 km. An optical-electronic station is also used to track air targets.
"Rat" regularly carries means of suppressing and destroying unmanned targets. Thus, the vehicle has its own electronic warfare system on board. The electronic warfare complex automatically monitors the airwaves and detects activity in the main ranges used by unmanned systems. When communication and control signals are detected, interference is generated. The effective impact range on a typical UAV is up to 1,5 km.
The first version of the Rat complex, presented in 2020, had the ability to suppress or destroy an air target using a laser. On the roof of such an armored car there is a combat module with an optical laser and a laser. The type and power of this product have not yet been announced. Depending on the range and design features of the target, the directed beam suppresses or damages the UAV's optics or damages its structure.

Optics and laser close up
This year they showed the second version of the Rat complex, equipped with fire weapons. In this capacity, the Belarusian-made Adunok BM-30 remote-controlled combat module was used. It is equipped with a 30-mm automatic cannon with the ability to use air-blast ammunition, has its own optics for targeting, etc. The effective range of fire against small air targets is stated at 4 km.
The Rat complex has an on-board information and control system that integrates all radio-electronic equipment and weapons. It provides collection and processing of information, data exchange and cash management. The operation of all means is controlled by one operator who has a full-fledged automated workstation with several monitors and a remote control.
It is reported that the Rat complex can maintain long-term duty and simultaneously use all available means of detection and destruction. At the same time, he is capable of working in a stationary position, protecting stationary objects, or accompanying moving ones - convoys, troops on the march, etc.
Specialized tool
Recently, NPP Istok can offer customers two options for a self-propelled multifunctional anti-UAV system called “Rat”. It can be expected that this equipment will be of interest to potential customers and in the future will enter service with certain structures. The appearance of orders will be facilitated by a characteristic and successful combination of technical characteristics and operational capabilities.
The Rat complex in both versions is mobile and built on the basis of a modern armored car. Due to this, a sufficient level of protection and high maneuverability are ensured. In addition, the existing building was able to accommodate a whole range of radio-electronic equipment for various purposes, which improved the overall results.

Operator's workplace
During operation, “Rat” can simultaneously or alternately perform several different tasks. Onboard equipment allows you to constantly monitor and suppress UAV control channels, as well as detect the devices themselves and, if necessary, destroy them. Depending on the modification of the complex, it is possible to be damaged by a laser beam or fragments of a programmable projectile.
In essence, the operator of the complex has the opportunity to choose the most effective means and methods for solving combat missions in the current situation. Accordingly, he can respond more flexibly to emerging situations and solve the problem of protecting the area/object with the best results and minimal risks.
A complex approach
In general, the two types of Rat vehicles presented are an interesting example of an integrated approach to solving a pressing problem. Using available and newly developed components, NPP Istok was able to formulate and implement a promising concept for a specialized anti-UAV complex that best suits the assigned tasks.
To date, two versions of “Rati” have reached the stage of testing and display at open events. This may indicate progress has been made and the project will soon move to the next stages. Accordingly, we can expect that in the near future such anti-UAV systems will go into production and enter service with the troops. The Ministry of Defense and other structures have not yet commented on this issue, but information about adoption may appear at any time.
