Features and key solutions of the SHAK-12 assault rifle complex
Using an ASh-12 assault rifle with a “tactical” silencer and an additional sight

At the beginning of the tenth years, domestic armory industry for the first time showed at one of the exhibitions the new “assault machine gun complex” ShAK-12 with the ASh-12 assault rifle. A weapon with an unusual appearance and high tactical and technical characteristics naturally became widely known. At the same time, the greatest interest in the project was its basic concept and the technical solutions with which it was implemented.

On special assignment

According to known data, the ShAK-12 complex was developed at the end of the XNUMXs by order of the Special Purpose Center of the Federal Security Service. This customer required an automatic weapon with high firing characteristics, capable of firing at a high rate, hitting targets with personal protective equipment and providing a high stopping effect.

The Tula TsKIB SOO (now part of the KBP) received the task of creating such a project. By the beginning of the next decade, the Bureau had developed a full-fledged complex, which included the machine gun itself, cartridges for it and a set of various additional elements. At the same time, all the necessary tests were passed, and in 2011, the ShAK-12 complex with the ASh-12 assault rifle entered service with the FSB TsSN.

It is known that the ASh-12 was mass-produced and delivered to the customer, but the details of these processes are unknown. There is also no information about the combat use of the machine gun and its results. It is still unknown whether the complex was adopted by other structures.

No export contracts have been announced yet. At the same time, TsKIB SOO and Rosoboronexport regularly display the SHAK-12 complex at various exhibitions. An unusual-looking product with special characteristics invariably attracts the attention of the public.

All elements of the SHAK-12 complex

Technical features

The ShAK-12 complex includes several components. The main one is the ASh-12 assault rifle. New 12,7x55 mm cartridges with several types of bullets have been developed especially for it. It is planned to introduce a variety of sighting devices and accessories into the complex to facilitate the operation and use of weapons.

The ASh-12 is an automatic weapon with a bullpup design. The total length of the product is only 675 mm. Weight without cartridges and body kit - 5,2 kg. All the main components of the machine gun are housed in a stamped steel receiver with a removable rear butt plate.

The ASh-12 has a 12,7 mm rifled barrel. The length of the barrel is unknown, but it may take up at least two-thirds of the weapon's total length. The machine uses the recoil energy of the barrel with its short stroke. The barrel is locked by turning the bolt. A firing mechanism, presumably a trigger type, was used. The fuse and fire switch flags are placed in pairs on both sides of the receiver. Food is supplied from detachable magazines with 10 or 20 rounds. Rate of fire – from 500 to 750 rounds/min.

On the upper edge of the receiver there is a rail for mounting sights. A carrying handle is attached to the top, on which sights can also be placed. Additional short bars are placed on the forend.

The SHAK-12 complex includes an original cartridge. It is made on the basis of a 55 mm long weltless cartridge case from the STs-130 cartridge and is equipped with several types of bullets. The PS-12 cartridge carries a subsonic bullet weighing 33 g; The PS-12A is equipped with a light 7-g bullet. The PD-12 carries two 17 g bullets in series, while the PB-12 has an 18 g armor-piercing bullet.

Cartridges mm 12,7x55

The machine is standardly equipped with a muzzle brake. The use of two mufflers is also provided. One is designed for use with a subsonic bullet, which ensures maximum noise reduction. The second is designated "tactical": it is smaller and uses supersonic bullets, which limits its effectiveness.

Concept level

In the SHAK-12 complex, what is primarily of interest is the basic concept and approach to development, which are not typical for most small arms projects. The fact is that the customer had specific requirements for the future automatic system that could not be met using ready-made components. In this regard, it was decided to develop all elements of the complex from scratch, fully taking into account the technical specifications.

As part of an integrated approach, TsKIB SOO has created a new line of cartridges with the required level of technical characteristics. We also developed an assault rifle almost from scratch, the design of which is optimized for 12x55 mm ammunition and allows us to fully unleash its potential. Silent and low-noise firing devices were created especially for the ASh-12 / ShAK-12, taking into account the geometry of the weapon and the parameters of the cartridges.

The simultaneous development of the key components of the complex has fully justified itself. ShAK-12 showed the necessary characteristics and satisfied the customer, as a result of which it entered service. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to fully assess the success of the project - there is no detailed information about tests and combat use.

Ammunition issue

The firing and operational characteristics of the ShAK-12 are determined mainly by the cartridge used. The 12x55 mm ammunition was created specifically for this complex and, as far as is known, is not used anywhere else. However, it is precisely together with the ASh-12 assault rifle that it fully realizes its potential.

ASH-12 assault rifle with muzzle brake and front handle

The large caliber made it possible to increase the energy parameters of the cartridge to the required level. At the same time, the shortened cartridge case reduced the dimensions of the ammunition and simplified the creation of hand-held weapons without loss in other parameters. In addition, the energy of the cartridge made it possible to use four variants of bullets for different purposes at once to solve various combat missions with high efficiency.

In the absence of any noise restrictions, a shooter with an ASh-12 can use a 12x55 mm cartridge with a light bullet, designated PS-12A. Such a bullet allows you to hit unprotected manpower at ranges of up to 100-150 m with a high stopping effect. The PD-12 two-bullet cartridge has the same purpose, but allows for increased fire density. The same problems are solved by a cartridge with a heavy PS-12 bullet, which allows the use of a full-fledged PBS.

One of the main objectives of the ShAK-12 project was to ensure the destruction of manpower with armor protection. For this purpose, an armor-piercing bullet with a core from the PB-12 cartridge was created. It is reported that in the operating range it penetrates body armor of almost all major protection classes. In addition, the PB-12 cartridge can be used against light armored vehicles.

Weapon design

The ASh-12 assault rifle was immediately created for the new cartridge and taking into account its parameters. The range of technical solutions used was determined by the specifics of the technical specifications and other factors. Ready-made elements were not borrowed from other projects. All this made it possible to obtain an optimal balance of technical, combat and operational characteristics.

The large caliber and the need to obtain high fire characteristics affected the layout of the machine gun. It was built according to the “bullpup” design, which gave the maximum possible barrel length, absolute and relative, with acceptable dimensions of the weapon as a whole. In addition, this arrangement made it possible to obtain optimal balancing and behavior of the weapon when firing.

The ASh-12 has automatic control based on the recoil of the barrel, which is not typical for modern domestic systems. However, a movable barrel with a muzzle brake makes it possible to effectively use the high power of the cartridge, as well as provide reliable reloading and reduce recoil impulse.

The idea of standard equipment for the machine with two silencers with different parameters is of interest. Both of these devices reduce the negative impact on the hearing organs, and in addition, provide obvious tactical advantages. However, the high power of the cartridge does not allow the shot to be completely silent.

Taking into account the general trends in the development of small arms, the creators equipped the ASh-12 with standard rails for installing the necessary devices. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to choose the optimal sighting device, improve ergonomics with the help of the desired “body kit,” etc.

For special tasks

The SHAK-12 assault rifle complex differs from other modern small arms in its characteristic appearance, special characteristics and other capabilities. All these differences are due to the specific requirements of the customer and the special approach of TsKIB SOO specialists. The gunsmiths were given complex tasks, and they successfully solved them by applying the best ideas in this case.

Based on the test results, the customer, represented by TsSN FSB, accepted the SHAK-12 complex into service. This suggests that the complex as a whole, the ASh-12 assault rifle and new types of cartridges fully comply with the requirements and wishes of the FSB special forces. Accordingly, all engineering solutions of TsKIB SOO were correct and logical for a specific project and its tasks.

Weight without cartridges and body kit - 5,2 kg.
The PPSh with an equipped drum magazine weighed that much.

Apparently the energy of the cartridge requires it. And more powerful parts to increase strength, and more mass to reduce recoil when firing in bursts.

By the way, the article does not contain data on the energy/initial velocity of the cartridges. Secret? Or where the author copied and pasted it from (Ryabov is such Ryabov :) ) it simply wasn’t there?

If the cartridge is subsonic, then the speed is no more than 300 m/s, even lower. The weight of the cartridge is written, the energy can be calculated using formulas.

The ASh-12 produces 1400 J for a subsonic cartridge, which is twice as much as the 9x39, and approximately equal to the energy of 5,45x39. Armor penetration is naturally much worse than that of 5,45x39, because the cross-section of the bullet / core is 5 (Five!!!) times larger.
IMHO, a silent cartridge is guaranteed to penetrate only class 2 armor, i.e. designed for pistol bullets. Plus it penetrates army and police helmets, and armor of higher classes into their soft parts.
In total, the result is a degraded 9x39 Val - much heavier, less ammunition, but penetrates the same. Unlike the Exhaust with the STs-130 cartridge, which at least has a muzzle energy of 3600 J, and probably takes class 3 armor. But with such an impulse, controlled automatic fire is hardly possible. It turned out that it was not possible to combine the advantages of Exhaust and Shaft in the ASh-12, but it was possible to lose their advantages.
IMHO, it would be better to pump the Val under the supersonic 9x39 cartridge, which would be on par with the AK in terms of armor penetration. And the Exhaust would be pumped to semi-automatic.

Achievement. I remember a comedy film, which, translated into Russian, was called “Drink First Fedya.” So there was a pistol that could shoot both forward and backward without moving the pistol. So there one almost shot himself. He forgot to switch the shooting back.

        And more powerful parts

        belay
Power is the ratio of the work produced over a certain period of time to a given period of time.
/how to apply this to a small arms part is a mystery/
        Maybe more massive?

        Where to put the inertia?

        Everything is easier:
Barrel mass = density * volume
        L*pi* (Rн-Rв)^2
Lock in the channel + spring + “hold” 12,7x55 mm is not 7,62x39
PS-12B with an armor-piercing bullet weighing 18g; PS-12 with a heavy subsonic bullet weighing 33g; PD-12 - two-bullet, each bullet weighs 17 grams; PS-12A with a light bullet with an aluminum core, bullet weight 7 grams.

I am very glad that our designers have finally decided to change the concept of gas processing and use the recoil of the barrel. This is fundamentally simpler, and the recoil (and with this caliber it will not be weak) is much less, and there should be less dancing when firing in bursts. I haven't shot anything like this before, but something tells me it will be an enjoyable experience. And finally, the special forces will have normal ASSAULT karamultuks, which cannot but rejoice.

    ASh-12 has a 12,7 mm rifled barrel
Indeed, the caliber of hand-held small arms is not the standard 12,7 with a 55 cartridge case (the caliber is like the DShK, but it has a 12,7 by 108 cartridge), and the cartridges for it are unique with several types of bullets. I was interested in the PD-12 cartridge with two bullets weighing 17 g each placed in it in sequence. Something like this

The ShAK-12 assault rifle complex differs from other modern small arms in its characteristic
different, that's for sure good .
“In fact, this is nothing more than the ASH-10 assault rifle, developed more than 12 years ago, chambered for a special 12,7x55 cartridge. In turn, it appeared as a result of the transformation of the well-known “Exhaust” rifle (see the article “Specific Exhaust” in "Kalashnikov" No. 9/2014) into automatic weapons. This is exactly the remaking path that the creators of some of the first models of manual automatic weapons followed 100 years ago. However, the “new product” itself was made using ancient technologies and upon closer examination does not reveal anything about it a product created in the 21st century.
......the use of the “bulpup” scheme made the ASh-12 unsuitable for use in cramped spaces (for which it was supposedly intended) due to the impossibility of safely processing “left” corners, and the secret automation scheme is a short barrel stroke, which in this case, it is used forcedly and does not provide any advantages in comparison with the gas outlet.
The transformation of ASh-12 into ShAK-12, in the absence of significant differences, seems to be an attempt to “refresh” a stale product with a new abbreviation, to pass it off as the product of another “decade of tireless work” and actions aimed at redistributing royalties. At the same time, the ShAK-12 has never been subjected to full independent testing.
In general, from my point of view, the ASH-12/SHAK-12 is a vivid example of the degradation of the domestic weapons school, which today tends to replace the required functionality and real combat effectiveness with cheap originality.
PS Keep in mind that Wikipedia is lying when it declares “supplies of ASh-12 to the troops.” This sample gathers dust in minute quantities in the corners of the weapons rooms of the FSB special forces."

“...communication with snipers from five units belonging to three different law enforcement agencies, in one of which, based on the results of the initial shooting test, there was not even anyone willing to secure this weapon.
In a conversation with one of the snipers of the TsSN FSB of the Russian Federation, who more than 10 years ago was directly involved in the development of tactical and technical specifications for the rifle, he admitted - “we imagined the end result differently...”
...shooting from the Exhaust with STs-130 PT 2 cartridges, I received 5 weak punctures of the primer for 15 shots....
....when firing PT and PT 2 cartridges, we obtained stable results in accuracy with a diameter of 5–7 cm per 100 m for four shots. At the same time, very often (in total, we fired more than 60 shots from two rifles over several trips) and for different shooters, when trying to add a fifth shot to the group, it came off by five centimeters, all in different directions."

I completely agree with the criticism of the ASH-12. My personal opinion was that it was necessary to “finish” the topic of 9 mm Vintorez (VSK). The Val automatic machine has similar characteristics with less weight. In our minds, if we were richer, the Ministry of Internal Affairs should be transferred to a 9 mm cartridge. For long-barreled weapons from Val (Vintorez), for short-barreled weapons - 9x19 based on the Lebedev pistol.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs needs this “translation” - like a hare needs a stop sign. hi The existing weapons are quite sufficient to solve the assigned tasks; weapons in general are a need of about 7-8 orders of magnitude for the system. Dress everyone up in budenovki with windings and arm them with Nagants - absolutely nothing will change.
But the fact that in recent months - according to the Minister - 90.000 people have left the ranks of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is really a problem. And no one is going to solve it.

        hi
IMHO, the idea was interesting, although “niche” - silently hitting a target, including in body armor. But the execution is "not very good", to put it mildly.

If we were richer, the Ministry of Internal Affairs should switch to a 9 mm cartridge. For long-barreled weapons from Val (Vintorez)
IMHO again, but Val/Vintorez is also a “niche” weapon due to the requirements for noiselessness (but well made, IMHO), hence the decision “heavy subsonic bullet” - and hence questions about range and flatness.
Considering that our Ministry of Internal Affairs is also involved in Special Military Operations (or whatever it is called now), the Ministry of Internal Affairs first of all needs 5,45*39 weapons (including the “light machine gun with belt” version) with a normal “body kit” .
If you really want to get involved in “experiments with calibers,” then the “dac-scratch” variants of the SIG 6,8*51 with the appropriate optics are better.

IMHO, variants of “police weapons” under 9*19, including “hot” P+++ variants, are quite working, you just need to look at 5 years of reviews/complaints on weapons. And IMHO, it is best to first give it to professional sports shooters for use/complaints, so that it doesn’t turn out like with the Viking/PYa.
But in general, you don’t need to invent anything, you need to do it like Glock: a “line of pistols” for different shooters and different needs.

          1. The entire security component was removed from the Ministry of Internal Affairs in favor of the Russian Guard. She is now “boiling water…” to pick up the last Thunder troops.
          2. The Ministry of Internal Affairs does not participate in the military action on the contact line.
          3. Problems of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with half-trained personnel to detain criminals, who in 99 cases hide in nice premises. “Ksyukhas” ricochet due to a light bullet or penetrate the walls of residential premises. There are cases of injuries to personnel and civilians. PM does not penetrate body armor. Therefore, you need a weapon with a subsonic heavy bullet that does not ricochet. You can even make it hollow with filler inside. The main thing is that the target receives a concussion, albeit without a fatal outcome.

I remember that the first pestle I had in my service was a PSM - in the Ministry of Internal Affairs they were armed with them at the department head/deputy level and a number of lower-level employees - so they stopped producing cartridges for it in the mid-90s, there was not even anything to carry out firing practice with. So they added them to the urn, as unnecessary. Then the PMM office purchased the first issues, with grooves in the chamber and a welded magazine. Also, the branded high-velocity cartridges ran out quickly, but at least you can shoot standard PM ones from it.
Everything that has a single, unique, super-duper unique ammunition and a look “for different shooters” - all this is in the firebox. It won’t take off in the event of a bummer, mass solutions proven over the years and by people rule, with large reserves of spare parts and consumables anywhere in the country. Because logistics and price are the selection criteria, and they make all the holes more or less the same, whether 9x18 or 9x19 - and you can’t tell the difference on the body.

I don’t believe about the barrel being two-thirds the length of the weapon.

Well, in vain. Everything that is behind the chamber (the bolt, its return mechanism and trigger elements) plus the recoil length of the barrel is guaranteed to fit into four cartridge lengths. If you get creative (at the cost of making the design more complex and expensive), then you can keep it to three. The bullpup allows you to reduce the total length of the weapon to the length of the barrel plus some part of the butt plus those same four cartridge lengths. Or three - but are these 5-6 cm always worth the extra cost?

It seems to me that SHAK-12 will occupy the niche of expensive and small-scale toys. It says here, if I'm not mistaken, that effective shooting at an unprotected (!) target is 100-150 meters. At such a distance, any small arms in the Russian army are practically effective, except for pistols, of course.
I don’t see anything other than the use of this ShAK-12 in the Russian Guard against bandits or crowds of demonstrators.
About the cartridges. A cartridge with a double charge of gunpowder and a double charge of large buckshot, like those used by US police shotguns, would be appropriate here, which clears a room for 50 meters without missing a beat with scattered buckshot. soldier

A lot depends on ergonomics here. The ejection of the cartridges must be from below, otherwise, literally after a few shots, the tactical glasses become covered with a coating of residues of powder gases in the cartridges. Also, the ejection goes directly opposite the shooter’s cheek and jams radio communications. Well, the eternal question is the quality of gunpowder. When sparks regularly flash right in the area of your right eye, this is not good.
