"Hero Kim Gun Ok" - the first strategic submarine missile carrier for the DPRK Navy
Management of TPK and KPA against the backdrop of the new submarine

In the near future, the naval forces of the Korean People's Army will be replenished with a new strategic combat unit. The diesel-electric ballistic missile submarine Hero Kim Gun Ok was recently launched, and now it will undergo the necessary tests. This cruiser will be the first in the DPRK Navy to have the ability to carry and use nuclear-armed ballistic missiles and will launch the construction of the naval component of the strategic nuclear forces.

In a solemn atmosphere

According to KCNA, the ceremony of launching the submarine took place on September 6 at the Ponde shipyard. The event was attended by senior leaders of the Workers' Party of Korea and the armed forces, incl. head of state Kim Jong Un. Statements were made pointing to the special capabilities of the new ship and its critical importance in ensuring national security.

The diesel-electric submarine/SSBN received the tactical number “841” and the name “Hero Kim Gun Ok” - in honor of the torpedo boat commander who carried out a successful attack on American cruisers in July 1950. By order of the Central Military Committee of the WPK, the new ship was included in one of the submarine divisions of the East Sea fleet KPA Navy. The leader of the DPRK presented this document to the commander of the unit.

The ship is taken out of the boathouse

Then, to the jubilation of the guests and ceremony participants, the submarine “841” was launched into the water. The ship was moved to the berth in preparation for future sea trials. On September 7, Kim Jong-un visited the ship, talked with the crew and got acquainted with the equipment.

It has not yet been announced how soon “Hero Kim Gun Ok” will go to sea for the first time to demonstrate its technical characteristics and combat capabilities. It is quite possible that sea trials will be carried out in compliance with the necessary secrecy, and the next time diesel-electric submarines will appear in official the news upon reaching combat readiness. However, given the importance of this ship for the DPRK fleet, one can expect a more open information policy, although without unnecessary details.

Secret development

North Korea implements all new defense projects behind closed doors, and the construction of a new submarine was no exception. Information about this ship has not previously been officially published, and there is only fragmentary information that may be related to this project. As a result, reliable information about the new ship appeared only a few days ago.

Apparently, the project for a promising SSBN was developed by North Korean shipbuilders independently, although some kind of assistance from friendly states or the use of borrowed ideas is not ruled out. The characteristic exterior of the boat speaks in favor of the latest version. The shape of most of the body is almost identical to the old Soviet project "633" developed in the mid-fifties or its Chinese licensed version "033". At the same time, there are significant innovations.

The descent has begun

In his speech at the launching ceremony, Kim Jong-un called the new ship a “standard type of tactical nuclear submarine” and indicated that the DPRK intends to rebuild all existing tactical submarines according to this project. From this we can conclude that “Hero Kim Gun Ok” was not built from scratch, and it is based on the designs of the boat Project 633 / 033 that was available to the Navy.

One way or another, the final appearance of the diesel-electric submarine “841” was shaped by Korean specialists, and their colleagues from the Ponde shipyard realized it in metal. Now the ship will have to undergo testing and confirm the correctness of all new technical solutions.

Submarine missile carrier

The Hero Kim Gun Ok is a medium to large diesel-electric submarine armed with torpedoes and missiles. Dimensions and displacement are unknown, but it can be assumed that due to the new hull elements and internal components, the Korean diesel-electric submarine is much longer and heavier than Soviet boats. Let us remind you that in Project 633 the length of the ship reached 77 m, the total displacement was more than 1700 tons.

The submarine has a durable hull of cylindrical or similar shape. Unlike Project 633, a hemispherical nasal tip is used. The contours of the stern and the layout of the units on it remained the same. The body is longer - a missile compartment has been added to its central part. It contains vertical launchers extending beyond the pressure hull. Their upper part is hidden under a new superstructure located behind the retractable device fence.

The architecture and parameters of the power plant are unknown. Probably, the general solutions of Project 633/033 are repeated, but modern units are used, incl. more powerful engines and better batteries. All this allows us to count on the growth of running characteristics, the duration of stay under water, etc.

The composition of the submarine's electronic and hydroacoustic equipment is unknown. Obviously, the SSBN “841” carries all the necessary instruments for navigation, communications, situation lighting, etc. The updated shape of the nose indicates the possible use of a modern HAK with improved characteristics.

Of greatest interest is the weapons complex. There should be 533 mm torpedo tubes in the bow, but it was not possible to see them - when the boat was launched into the water, they were covered with canvas in the colors of the national flag. In the “hump” behind the wheelhouse there are VPUs for missiles, arranged in two longitudinal rows. The presence of four shaft covers of a larger diameter and four smaller ones is clearly visible. It follows that the “Hero Kim Gun Ok” can carry missiles of two sizes or models.

It is obvious that the new Korean SSBN will carry Pukkyuksong series ballistic missiles, but the types of compatible products remain unknown. The larger-diameter launchers are likely intended for the Pukkyukson-3 medium-range SLBM with a range of about 2500 km. Also, as part of this series, a new smaller missile with half the range has been developed. For such products, six VPUs of reduced size can be intended.

Reportedly, the new SLBM will be the first carrier of nuclear-armed missiles in the KPA Navy. The range of the SLBMs used, the presence of special warheads and the specifics of the intended use make the Hero Kim Gun Ok a strategic missile cruiser.

New era

Due to the lack of complete information, it is quite difficult to assess the technical potential of the new North Korean SSBN. It can be assumed that due to the use of modern components and technologies, the submarine “841” is superior in its main technical characteristics to the old diesel-electric submarines Project 633 and 033. At the same time, it should be inferior to more advanced ships of similar classes, such as the Russian Varshavyanka.

Submarine at the pier

However, in the new DPRK project, the greatest interest is not the submarine itself, but its weapons and associated potential. Unlike all its predecessor submarines, the Hero Kim Gun Ok receives medium-range ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. This fact alone takes the submarine to a whole new level and gives it special significance for the KPA Navy.

This PLRB is called the beginning of a new era in stories armed forces of the DPRK. Indeed, the submarine kickstarts the construction of the naval component of the strategic nuclear forces. As Kim Jong-un said, in the future other diesel-electric submarines of the Korean fleet will be rebuilt according to this project. Such a process will take a lot of time, but will most seriously change the potential of submarine forces and strategic nuclear forces.

It should be recalled that at the moment the DPRK's strategic nuclear forces are represented only by ground-based missile systems of various classes and types. The newest submarine will complement them and give nuclear forces additional combat capabilities, as well as in a certain way improve their stability and combat effectiveness. The construction of new such SSBNs will also have a positive effect on the potential of strategic nuclear forces. In the absence of any plans to build an air component, submarines are of particular importance.

How exactly, at what speed and with what results the construction of new submarines will proceed is still unknown. It should be expected that the leadership and industry of the DPRK will take it seriously and will do everything possible to achieve their goals. Solving such problems will not be easy, but the result should justify all the efforts.

The boat was named in honor of the DPRK Hero Kim Gun Ok, who, with the rank of lieutenant commander, commanded a detachment of four G-5 torpedo boats of the Korean People's Army Navy, which, according to the official version, attacked the American heavy cruiser "Baltimore" on July 2, 1950 near Chumunjin and allegedly sank it (in reality, the American air defense cruiser Juneau and the British light cruiser Jamaica and the sloop Black Swan were attacked, sinking three out of four North Korean torpedo boats without losses on their part). Although the attack was not successful, it is creepy to imagine how 4 small TKAs go on an attack on a group of ships full of anti-aircraft guns. Heroes are not awarded just like that. A hero is not only a person who has accomplished a feat, but also strived to accomplish it and done everything possible. By the way, the text in the first mention talks about “.... The presence of four shaft covers of a larger diameter and four smaller ones is clearly visible.” Later the second ones became 6. That’s right, still 6.

No, The Koreans did not develop their own VNEU. It is possible (but not certain) that the AIP was given to them by the Chinese as military-technical assistance. The whales sold their NSPL pr.039V (8 units) to Pakistan, and here, perhaps on the sly, they “shared” the technology with their younger brother. But this cannot be said for sure. Perhaps the number of AB groups has been increased to 4. They probably installed silver-zinc ones instead of the previous batteries, thereby increasing the underwater range. Maybe...
The draped one is of greater intrigue. nasal extremity "Hero of the Eye": it is not known how many TAs are in the nose; you can’t see the boundaries of the HAC - you can estimate the parameters... The fact that the boat does not have a GGL is a minus. It also does not have on-board “ears” (gas receivers on the body) and definitely does not have a GPBA. All this indicates the underdevelopment of surveillance equipment and reduces the technical characteristics of the boat to the level of a “tin can”.
About torpedo tubes. It was mentioned in the press that there are only 2 of them at the nasal end. Then the supply of maintenance is only 6 units.
Judging by the diameter of the LC (and the PC is even smaller!), there is also no double depreciation system for the units. It’s good if there are rubber-cord shock absorbers under the main bellows...
Therefore, the PLB will not release such submarines far from the borders of their area in order to save them. It follows that this is not a “cruising submarine” at all, as the author believes, but only a “large” one (according to our classification).
About weapons. The missile launch will most likely be “mixed”: 4 VPU for SLBMs of the “Pukkykson-1” (KN-11) type with D max. approximately = 1250 km, the missile has an estimated length of 9,7 m and a diameter of 1,5 m.) Or the larger Pukkyukson-3 (KN-26) SLBM with an estimated flight distance of about 2100-2500 km. It has a length of 10,6 m and a diameter of 1,8 m.
There is a new Pukkyukson-4A SLBM, but it is smaller in size than the KN-26. Her D max. estimated = 1000-1200 km.
6 smaller VPUs can accommodate the Hwasal-2 type CRBD. In appearance and performance characteristics, it resembles the Tomahawk CRBD or our 3M14 CRBD of the Caliber complex.

No. This is a traditional "dive boat". It’s hard to imagine how a “strategic missile carrier” will constantly float to the surface and charge its batteries. And in terms of displacement, its autonomy is small.
And they decided easily, not having the opportunity to make a large boat and having “drunk” in the shaft body, they made a hump.
But what a “horror story” it will be!

how 4 small TKAs attack a group of ships

It was a little the opposite - the cruisers Juneau and Jamaica and the frigate Black Swan discovered 6 Korean boats - four torpedo boats and two artillery boats - and went to intercept, sank three torpedo boats and then began to fire at North Korean positions on the shore.

Koreans are generally fighting guys. I would like to note that, under conditions of isolation and sanctions, they created serious weapons, some of which are superior to Russian and American ones. For comparison, the Ukrainian has squandered his entire Soviet heritage over the years...

Well, the title of the article and the first paragraph immediately explain both the type of submarine and the equipment with a “propulsion” installation on board. wink
I remember three days ago there were disputes, and even a change in the title of the article:
    https://topwar.ru/225631-v-kndr-spustili-na-vodu-novuju-atomnuju-podvodnuju-lodku.html

And the hero in whose honor the diesel-electric submarine was named was also mentioned in the comments...

In Germany, they also launched the “hunchback” of the Dolphin-2 project, the Dragon, for the Israeli Navy.

This cannot be said. It is likely that it has more capacious batteries than all Russian diesel submarines and a very long underwater range for the electric ship.

This is the American version of this battle. North Korean boats did not sink Baltimore or another cruiser, but there are so many ships in the American fleet, including landing ships, that could have been sunk or damaged in this battle.
I still have not seen a complete list of US and allied casualties at sea in Korea.

There is an example of the USSR, which, on the basis of the torpedo diesel-electric submarine Project 641, built SSBNs Project 629 and 629A. At the same time, the underwater displacement increased from 2550 tons to 3550 tons, and the length - from 91,3 m to 98,9 m.
By the way, the last of Project 629A was transferred to China in bulk in 1961, completed in Dalian and became part of the Chinese Navy in 1964.

Submarines Project 629 and 629A were never classified as SSBNs. These were SSBNs with R-13 (range 600 km) and R-21 (range 1500 km) missiles.
The first Soviet real SSBN is Project 667BD (Murena-M type) with R-29D missiles.

The fact that you were not provided with a list of losses is of course bad.

What I wasn't given full the list of losses is nothing - I won’t complain. But the fact that no one was provided with such a list, 70 years after the end of the war, is not very good.
So, oddly enough, there were no dead cruisers in the war of 1950-1953.

    1. I have no doubt about this. But I wrote about the possible loss of another type of ship - for example, a landing ship, and not only an American one, but also possibly a captured Japanese one.
    2. If you are interested in the history of naval warfare, then you probably know that a cruiser or other ship that is torpedoed does not always die, but can only escape with damage. Often one torpedo hit was not enough to sink a destroyer. There was a case when a torpedo hit did not lead to the death of a small hunter weighing 50 tons.

There is a reasonable assumption that the new submarine’s silver-zinc batteries may fail.
(DPRK is a large producer of silver and zinc) and some kind of air-independent engine.
In his speech at the launching ceremony, Kim Jong Un specifically pointed out that the new boat has much better cruising underwater performance.

A submarine is a very serious weapon. Therefore, we could make a barter deal with the DPRK. India returned to us our submarine, which was on lease. Our people are going to write it off. So why not transfer it to the DPRK in exchange for MLRS or shells - whichever is more necessary. In any case, this submarine is more modern than the one they launch. Or you can expand the deal and transfer Varshavyanka to them, also in exchange for supplies of MLRS or ammunition.

in July 1950, which carried out a successful attack on American cruisers.

    This is a Korean lie

Such an event has never happened in history

For 70 years, the DPRK has been seriously stating that on July 2, 1950, torpedo boats sank the heavy cruiser Baltimore and the light cruiser Juneau, and even built a museum (!) in honor of this event. Exclusively for “internal consumers”

«The fiery wind hit them in the face, but they bravely rushed forward.”

Before the heavy roar from the first explosion had time to dissipate over the sea surface, a new torpedo hit the side of the cruiser. The crew of torpedo boat No. 21 called fire on themselves and fully fulfilled their sacred duty to the Motherland. Panicked enemies jumped overboard the sinking ship when two new torpedo explosions finally broke the Baltimore in half, placing her wreckage at the bottom of the deep East Korean Sea."

This photo shows the cutting process of the Baltimore MRT, 1972. However, any refutations are not even required here; the whole story of the sinking of the cruisers was written by schizophrenics
