The Russian defense industry continues to work on a promising family of artillery and mortar weapons "Sketch", and individual projects are nearing completion. So, it became known that the 2S40 Phlox multifunctional self-propelled artillery gun is in the final part of the tests. In the near future, the start of deliveries of such equipment and its operation in the troops is expected.

On development stage

In 2016, the domestic defense industry, represented by the Nizhny Novgorod Central Research Institute Burevestnik (part of the Uralvagonzavod Research and Production Company of the Rostec State Corporation), presented new developments in the field of ground artillery. For several branches of the military, a complex of self-propelled artillery and mortar weapons was developed with the code "Sketch", which included a number of samples, incl. product 2S40 "Phlox".

A prototype of the Phlox SAO was first shown at the Army-2016 forum. In the future, this machine and other representatives of the Sketch family were repeatedly demonstrated at new exhibitions. So, the main developments of the line are currently present at the sites of the Army-2023 forum. In addition, since 2019, a new series of guns began to be shown at foreign exhibitions.

In the summer of 2018, the development organization reported that the CAO 2S40 had been sent for preliminary tests. Their goal was to determine the general running and combat characteristics, as well as to identify design flaws for subsequent correction. In October 2019, the management of Uralvagonzavod reported that the preliminary tests of Phlox and other equipment were at the final stage.

Then for the first time they mentioned the existence of a contract for the mass production of self-propelled guns. The assembly of equipment was planned to be launched in the coming years, after the completion of the tests. In the future, the topic of the imminent start of production and deliveries to the troops was repeatedly raised, and different dates for this were called. Apparently, the customer and contractor had to adjust their plans taking into account objective factors.

On the eve of the opening of the Army-2022 forum in August last year, the UVZ press service announced the start of mass production of two new models of equipment - the Phlox and Magnolia self-propelled guns. Finished products were expected at the end of the current or at the beginning of the next 2023.

Soon

On the eve of the new Army-2023 forum, defense industry enterprises began to talk about their latest successes. So, on August 10 RIA News published a long interview with the Deputy General Director of Rostec Vladimir Artyakov. One of the topics of conversation was promising developments in the field of artillery and the progress of these projects.

In general, work on the Sketch family continues successfully. The 2S40 Phlox self-propelled gun is now at the final stage of testing. The first serial samples of such equipment are planned to be transferred to the troops in the coming months.

The details of such deliveries have not yet been specified. It remains unknown the size of the first serial batch, the connection or part where it will go, etc. Nevertheless, it is clear that so far we will only talk about the development of new technology and trial operation. At the same time, the unit that received the first serial Phloxes will acquire a number of important capabilities.

Mobility and firepower

The 2S40 Phlox project is based on two main ideas, each of which should provide an increase in certain technical and combat characteristics. The first is the placement of an artillery gun on an automobile chassis of an appropriate carrying capacity. This design of the self-propelled gun improves its mobility and performance. The second main idea is the use of a "universal" tool that performs the functions of systems of several classes.

SAO "Floks" is built on a three-axle chassis "Ural-4320", which combines the necessary characteristics of mobility and carrying capacity. A two-row armored cockpit is mounted on such a base. Various equipment is placed behind it, and an artillery installation is located in the stern.

The 2S40 product has a combat weight of 20 tons. On the highway, a speed of at least 80 km / h develops, which contributes to the rapid movement between positions. In addition, the used chassis shows a high cross-country ability. However, in terms of off-road mobility, the cargo wheeled chassis is inferior to tracked vehicles.

An artillery system of an original design is located in the aft part of the chassis. It includes a rotary upper machine, on which the tool and auxiliary means are placed. The fixed part of the system includes a base plate lowered to the ground. For the convenience of calculation, a platform is provided, raised above the ground.

"Phlox" carries a 120-mm rifled gun 2A80, which is a continuation of the well-known family based on the "gun-shot" ballistic scheme. Due to its design, such a weapon is capable of using different types of ammunition. The nomenclature of the shots is actually borrowed from the older systems "Nona", "Vena" and "Khosta". Thanks to this, the 2S40 can perform the functions of a gun, howitzer and mortar. Depending on the type of ammunition used, the firing range reaches 8-10 km.

The self-propelled gun is equipped with a modern digital fire control system. It determines the location of the combat vehicle, calculates the data for firing and provides guidance. Sights of traditional designs are provided as a backup. There are also modern means of communication that allow integrating the SAO into a single ground artillery control loop.

The transportable ammunition of the Phlox includes 60 shots of all types. A third is included in the ammunition of the first stage and is located in boxes and cells in the immediate vicinity of the gun. The rest of the shells are transported in the middle of the chassis in the appropriate stowage. The supply of ammunition to the gun and loading are carried out manually.

If necessary, the CAO can defend itself. For this, a combat module with a large-caliber machine gun is placed on the cabin roof. There is also a laser warning system and a set of smoke grenade launchers.

Worked out ideas

Thus, the 2S40 Phlox project is the next step in the development of the well-known family of artillery systems. This SAO differs from its predecessors in an improved gun, an updated artillery unit and a different chassis. All these innovations determine the growth of tactical and technical characteristics.

One of the main advantages of the Phlox product is the use of a truck chassis. It provides an increase in mobility, and also allows you to transport a larger ammunition load. A similar ACS / ACS architecture is used in several modern projects of domestic development and, under certain restrictions, performs well.

The 2A80 gun is based on old developments and ideas, but in general it is a new model. Like its predecessors, it is capable of using a variety of shots and can actually replace weapons of different classes. At the same time, the characteristics of the 2A80 product remain at the required level, and new controls make it possible to increase the efficiency of fire.

The new "Phlox" as a whole looks like a curious modern artillery system. In a number of situations, it can fully complement other self-propelled guns, which are distinguished by higher maneuverability and crew protection. In addition, it can be a replacement for towed guns of different classes. In all such situations, it will be possible to use the advantages provided by the wheeled chassis and the "universal" tool.

Approaching Final

Thus, the development work "Sketch", carried out at the Central Research Institute "Petrel", gradually gives all the desired results. All new models of artillery systems developed within the framework of this R&D have already been brought to trials, and the most successful ones are already being built in series. In particular, such progress has so far been demonstrated by the SAO 2S40 Phlox project.

According to the latest reports, Phlox is completing tests, and the industry is mastering its mass production. The first batch of such equipment will go to the troops in the coming months. Obviously, production will not stop there, and the 2S40 will become a fairly massive and widespread model, and will also positively affect the capabilities of ground artillery.

As I understand it, Phlox is coming as a more mobile replacement for Sanyam. And "Drok", as a replacement for "Tray".
Oh, these would be mortars in a universal tower (combat module), but with a loading mechanism! It would be more like fire!

    Not impressive.
From "Tosochka" the effect is immeasurably greater.
    And there are cheaper UAVs.
Ammunition, placed directly on the machine, can do a hell of a job if something large-caliber or some kind of drone hits ...
I understand that the last word belongs to those to whom it is intended, but impressions like:
"Oh! Don't give a damn!" it didn’t work out ... the one I received in 2015 when voicing the performance characteristics of the “Coalition-SV” ...

More like an addition. It is impossible to refuse 120-mm 2B11. It's so compact and cheap. And this thing is to strengthen him. Three "Phloxes" in each motorized rifle battalion will be very good, especially if the battalion is on the BTR-82A.
In theory, the machine should be cheap and with almost eternal barrels without wear and tear, like other mortars.

          More like an addition.

Replacement, and complete. In the conditions of modern counter-battery combat, the 2B11 is actually disposable, therefore, other things being equal, the guns should work in the mode of a short fire raid - movement - a short fire raid ...

They are not so disposable, there have been videos more than once when mortarmen, having fired back with branches, cover the mortar and run to the nearest basement.
This is a replacement, but a replacement for the 2S12 "Sani" complex in the back of a tilt truck. The trench option will still fight.
I'm more concerned about whether it will be possible to fire direct fire? As it turned out, the 82-mm "Droka" does not have it, one big disappointment.

The fact of the matter is that infantry support must be carried out without fail, i.e. how it should look like - the power department lays out in advance at points every 400-500 meters a dozen equipped shells / min, a self-propelled mortar drives up, raises the barrel, the calculation charges, while this is happening, the mortar computer calculates corrections (30-60 seconds), reported readiness , received a command to open fire, fired back (minute), the calculation is loaded into the car, the barrel is lowered, the mortar travels 500 meters to the next point. And so all 4-6 mortars of a mortar battery of a motorized rifle battalion, fire support / escort is continuous, it is very difficult to detect a counter-battery with traditional means, it is even more difficult to suppress, i.e. the enemy will be forced to send a drone to search for self-propelled guns.

It is not clear why something to lay out. The "Phlox" has a very large portable ammunition load, which is immediately at hand in a special stowage.

In order to always be ready to open fire, for example, on the planned targets of the OFS, plus in laying the "Fringe", smoke, REP, etc. At a rate of 200 120-mm mines per hectare of a stronghold (300x200 meters), 1200 120-mm mines will be needed, minus a quarter when controlling the lesion.

With such a consumption of ammunition (1200 mines), it is unlikely that it will be possible to get by with only battalion weapons, even if 3 pieces are involved. 2B11 and 3 pcs. SAO "Phlox". The barrels simply overheat. Will definitely need reinforcement.
Nevertheless, one must rely on the transportable ammunition of the "Phlox", the data on it in the press were different from 60 to 120 shots.

If the target is observable (from a CNP or a copter), then 900, if WTO ("Gran" / tank / ATGM) is used for point targets - less. The main point is that a portable stock of 60 shots, even for work only on planned targets, is not enough.

Here it is worth remembering the supply of ammunition for conventional easel mortars. After all, a truck with mines is, in principle, defenseless, it must reach the front line, unload and return back. And then, if the calculation should change its position, then how to transport 120 mm mines, not to carry it on yourself? I also see the other side of the coin, when the camouflage and secrecy of the position of the mortar is clearly inferior to the usual easel one. It remains to correctly use the novelty on the ground, it's like wheeled tanks, which we have criticized completely and rightly, but in some situations they have advantages and their merits, otherwise they would not have made them ... request

There is no armor, so fragments may be enough for the crew, and if a direct hit with the detonation of ammo, then don’t worry, mom. And the weight is much more than that of the towed one, you cannot transfer it to the position with a turntable. Patency on wheels is not at all the same as on tracks. In general, they combined the disadvantages of towed artillery and self-propelled guns, losing the advantages of both.

It is almost a dream of every battalion commander to have a couple of such machines in the gas station to defeat some enemy defender. In terms of range for a gun of this caliber, 8-10 km is normal. But for such a small gun, such an expensive protected chassis? With a bunch of modern electronics, including an ultra-modern fire control tablet from VNII Signal.
And this despite the fact that the fighters must manually lay mines and shells from behind into the gun. And manually select mines with the necessary charge, since mines come with an additional charge attached in bags ...

Howitzer / gun (both towed and self-propelled) - 152 with a single projectile (and it would be nice also with a single modular charge, but it’s more complicated here)
        Heavy mortar (even self-propelled) - 120 mm

And the army men in the same caliber and with the same BP have "Vienna", "Hosta" and "Nona-SVK".

          Heavy mortar (even self-propelled) - 120 mm

So "Phlox" is a self-propelled mortar. In addition to "Khosta" and expensive because of the base "Vene" and "None-SVK". Although the latter, he is likely to replace.

Calibers do not produce: earlier there were also 120-mm mortars. But the Coalition needs new 152-mm shells. And the Genocide also had its own 152-mm ones.

This miracle waffe was invented for what staff structure? For the battalion, judging by the firing range? Instead of a mortar battery, 120mm mortars? So this is complete nonsense. Regimental art? So she obviously loses even to the towed D-30, which has a range of more than 15 km, I’m already silent about the Gvozdika. I don’t even consider divisional art at all. Airborne, she also "does not roll." Specialists like the Russian Guard or border guards? In general, as we say: "Neither a candle to God, nor a poker to hell." Misappropriation of public funds, to put it mildly.

The new "Phlox" as a whole looks like a curious modern artillery system.
The richest country is Russia. He allows himself not only the necessary (such as the notorious "Coalition") systems, but also simply curious
It proves once again that our designers do not work for the army, but for exhibitions and parades. Instead of one system in service with the entire army, there are ten pieces in the form of exhibition samples. And what? The money is the same, but stealing is more convenient.

I don't understand. A self-propelled mortar is not a vehicle necessary for the army, or what? The dimensions of the chassis are a little surprising, of course, but perhaps there are justifications for this. Other than that, I think it's a good idea. And the Coalition is by no means a replacement or a competitor.

There is a Russian proverb about such samples:
neither a candle to God nor a poker to hell

I remember the same author making fun on the same pages of the Italian 155 mm M109L with a firing range of 30 kilometers, as decommissioned and obsolete.
And a 120 mm fart with a firing range of 10 kilometers, according to the author
will positively affect the capabilities of ground artillery

As one English scholar and poet, Francis MacDonald Cornford, said:
Propaganda is the art of lying

The author is clearly far from mastering this art.

Quite the opposite, the Phlox SAO is a replacement for mortars, and we have just a hole in this niche, conceptual samples of the Second World War.

8-10 km is within the range of the simplest drones, which means that the gun will be detected and destroyed very quickly, this is not very good.

So, it became known that the 2S40 Phlox multifunctional self-propelled artillery gun is in the final part of the tests. In the near future, the start of deliveries of such equipment and its operation in the troops is expected.

The 2S40 Phlox self-propelled gun is now at the final stage of testing. The first serial samples of such equipment are planned to be transferred to the troops in the coming months.

According to the latest reports, Phlox is completing tests, and the industry is mastering its mass production. The first batch of such equipment will go to the troops in the coming months.

And where did you get the rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute? I didn't find anything about it in the article. Are you a developer?
As for the firing range - any suits me. It will not suit the calculations of these guns, as well as the commanders who will have these SAOs at their disposal. Why - if you do not understand, then I will not explain.

All this is not a problem at all. The most difficult thing is the camouflage of such machines near the front line. It turns out higher than a conventional tilt truck.
And what is referred to as disadvantages here is actually an advantage of this machine.
This is the possibility of using cheap ammunition and a large portable ammunition load and automation and a roomy cabin for calculating the gun.

And where did you get the rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute?

From open sources, through a search engine, a matter of 10 seconds of searching.
What won't work? This is a replacement for 2B11 mortars, look at their range.

With this arrangement, a shot every 6 seconds? Hmm... Well, if so, let's take the word of defense marketers. It is interesting - how many minutes after entering the position is the gun ready to fire, and how long after the last shot can it leave it? If the last figure is more than 2-3 minutes, then this weapon and its calculation at the current level of counter-battery combat achieved by the enemy will be disposable.

The myopia of both our Defense Ministry and the military-industrial complex is very surprising. You look around what is already shooting in the series. As an example, the Cubans in the 90s put the d-30 howitzer on the BMP chassis, how many howitzers and BMP chassis do we have? Refine and forward. As a temporary measure, useful and cheaper. Look at the experience of Syria with various installations of guns on various chassis.

The article states that Phlox's patency is lower than tracked vehicles. This is true, but after all, in case of mudslides, cross-country ability can be significantly increased by attaching quickly put on rubberized or other tracks to the rear pairs of wheels.

All these self-propelled guns were needed in the troops yesterday. But someone who is called Minister O was engaged in fraud, parades and biathlon games, turning the army into an ostentatious exhibition. But he is "his own" for some, which means he will never answer for this.

The CAO can defend itself. For this purpose, a combat module with a large-caliber machine gun is placed on the roof of the cabin.

How will she protect herself and her crew from a counter-battery...
A minute or two after the first shot a response may arrive...

A similar self-propelled gun / self-propelled gun architecture is used in several modern domestically developed projects and, under certain restrictions, performs well.

Compare with Wiesel with a 120 mm mortar.
I would do a better job of working on the Sleigh so that I could quickly expand, collapse, and drag. In particular, combine it with a cart. Well, as an option. Why not make the mines from cast iron, but plastic ones (can be reinforced with steel rods) - and production is faster and cheaper

Every day I read news about new products and.....? Which of them provides a turning point in the war? If not, why have them? As I understand it, the only thing that is really needed now is a product that will cover aero/space reconnaissance, everything else is already there and does not bring a fundamental change.

Compare the 2S40 Phlox in size with the AMPV armored personnel carrier, which is equipped with a 120-mm NEMO mortar system.
The first prototype of a self-propelled mortar based on the new AMPV armored personnel carrier, which is equipped with a 120-mm NEMO mortar system, was transferred to the US Army - BAE Systems.
