The supply of engineering troops consists of various special equipment designed to solve certain problems. Each such sample performs its own type of work, but a universal approach is also possible. So, a few years ago, NPK Uralvagonzavod developed and brought to testing the "universal armored engineering vehicle" UBIM. Due to a special set of devices and units on board, it is able to replace three types of engineering equipment at once.
Sample at exhibitions
The promising product UBIM was developed in the middle of the last decade by the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering from the NPK Uralvagonzavod (State Corporation Rostec). The customer was the engineering troops, who need a multifunctional engineering vehicle on a modern chassis. Development work carried the code "Robot-3"; the working designation of the project is "Object 153".
For the first time, the project "153" was presented at the military-technical forum "Army-2017". At that time, UKBTM was limited only to the layout and general information about the project. However, already at the next forum in the Patriot park, UKBTM and NPK UVZ showed for the first time a full-fledged prototype of the new machine. In addition, this time they named some of the characteristics and described the capabilities of the product.

In the same period, the experimental UBIM underwent the necessary tests at the test site. The driving and operational characteristics were checked, and the solution of various engineering problems using standard equipment was also worked out. "Object 153" confirmed the design characteristics.
Right now, UBIM, along with other developments of Uralvagonzavod, is again being demonstrated at the Army-2023 forum. The press service of "Rostec" in the announcement of the exhibition indicated that with these exhibits, tank builders show the uniqueness and versatility of the T-72/90 chassis. This machine has a great potential for modernization and can be used for various purposes.
Questions of universality
At the heart of the project "Robot-3" / "153" / UBIM is an interesting idea, formed on the basis of an analysis of the work of engineering troops in recent local conflicts. So, in the course of hostilities, the need regularly arises for the evacuation of damaged equipment, mine clearance, debris removal, etc. In the modern fleet of engineering troops, each of these tasks is assigned to a specific model of special equipment.
As part of the R&D "Robot-3", it was proposed to combine all these functions in one universal machine. On one chassis, it was necessary to install equipment and devices typical for engineering equipment of different classes. It was assumed that such an approach would allow solving all the problems facing, but at the same time simplify this work. However, in this case, a certain complication of the machine was to be expected.
Testing Machine
UKBTM successfully solved the set design tasks. The resulting UBIM is capable of replacing three types of equipment at once - an armored recovery vehicle, an engineering barrier vehicle and an armored demining vehicle. Some functions are provided by built-in systems and units, while others require attachments and / or replaceable equipment.
As reported, UBIM is able to make passages in the rubble of various kinds, incl. on difficult terrain. It can also perform various earthworks: tear off trenches, fill up obstacles, prepare the road, etc. Overcoming and neutralization of mine-explosive barriers of various kinds is provided. The function of evacuation of damaged equipment or its removal from the roadway is provided. Finally, "Object 153" is able to protect itself from a number of threats.
Technical features
Promising UBIM is made on a redesigned chassis of the main tank T-90. The main changes were made to the hull and its internal equipment. Following the model of other engineering vehicles, the hull has a high asymmetric wheelhouse, shifted to the port side. Inside it is part of the special engineering equipment and crew jobs. Also, several new units are placed outside the hull.
The tank hull and the new cabin provide a high level of ballistic protection. The crew is protected from bullets and shells of various calibers. It is also possible to install additional lead protection blocks - in this configuration, the UBIM can work in areas with radiation contamination.
Application of boom with grab bucket
The dimensions of the tank corps did not change during the restructuring, however, the overall dimensions of the UBIM increased due to the installed equipment. The length of an engineering vehicle is comparable to the length of a tank, including the gun. Curb weight "Object 153" - 52 tons; together with a full set of tools and equipment - 55 tons.
The engineering vehicle retained the standard power plant of the T-90 tank of later modifications and was made on the basis of the V-92S2F diesel engine with an HP 1130 power. The undercarriage with six road wheels on board remained the same. The driving characteristics of the UBIM in comparison with the T-90 have not changed much. The maximum speed reaches 60 km / h, the cruising range is 500 km.
In the forward part of the hull there is a bulldozer equipment in the form of a blade with two movable wings. Hydraulics provides its vertical movement and changes the angle of the wings. Blade width - up to 4,5 m. In some works, the blade is used as an additional support.
On the right side of the hull, next to the wheelhouse, there is a multifunctional boom on a slewing device. It is equipped with a full-revolving tong-type bucket or a hydraulic hammer. In the stowed position, the boom folds along the body; in the stern there is a place for equipment that is not currently in use. The maximum lifting capacity of the boom is 7,5 tons.
Combat module for self-defense
A traction electric winch with a force of 25 tf and a cable 100 m long is placed inside the hull. It is proposed to use it to move damaged equipment and other objects.
UBIM can overcome mine-explosive barriers and conduct other equipment behind them. On board there are demining tools that provoke the detonation of devices with a non-contact magnetic fuse.
The crew of an engineering vehicle consists of two people - a driver and a commander. For them, two hatches in the roof of the cabin and a set of optical instruments are intended. The commander performs the functions of an operator in the performance of some work. In the habitable cutting compartment, there are also places for three sappers. The compartment has air conditioning and heater; a supply of drinking water is provided for long-term operation.
The universal engineering vehicle is equipped with a modern navigation system and communication facilities. It can work as part of the Unified Tactical Control System. According to the ESU TZ contours, the UBIM commander receives data on the current situation and orders. The presence of such tools simplifies the interaction with other units and speeds up the solution of any proposed tasks.
The workplace of the driver
For self-defense, UBIM is equipped with a remotely controlled combat module with a heavy machine gun. The module has an optical device with a day and night channel. Ammunition - 1200 rounds. The vehicle also carries smoke grenade launchers for firing into the front hemisphere.
Technique of the future
It is known that the universal armored engineering vehicle "153" / "Robot-3" / UBIM has been tested and confirmed its characteristics. Previously, development organizations demonstrated the operation of such a machine in a test site with the performance of certain works using standard equipment.
At the same time, as far as is known, while UBIM exists only in the form of a prototype (s). Information about the order of such equipment by the Ministry of Defense has not yet been received. It is possible that such a contract is still under preparation and will be signed after the completion of all tests and checks.
It should be expected that the receipt of UBIM products will have a positive effect on the capabilities of the engineering troops. Their functions and tasks will not change, but the capabilities of this kind will improve. In addition, it will be easier, more convenient and safer for crews to carry out the intended work.
