Rumors and assessments: in anticipation of the Kh-50 cruise missile

A few years ago it became known that for the far aviation VKS is developing a new medium-range air-launched cruise missile Kh-SD or Kh-50. Work on this product is gradually approaching completion, and in the foreseeable future it will go into service. At the same time, the new missile is already causing concern to the enemy, and in addition, there are rumors about the beginning of its combat use.

Concerns and rumors

Since last year, missile-carrying bombers of our long-range aviation have been regularly attacking distant enemy targets. Tu-95MS, Tu-160 and Tu-22M3 aircraft solve such tasks with the help of Kh-55, Kh-101 and Kh-22 cruise missiles. The characteristics of these weapons correspond to the tasks set, and they show high efficiency.

Not so long ago, in mid-April 2023, the Ukrainian General Staff expressed concerns about the possible appearance of a new long-range weapons. Referring to some of their data, the enemy General Staff reported that in June Russia would begin mass production of promising X-50 ALCMs. For some time, a stock of such products will be accumulated, which will then begin to be used in strikes against Ukrainian targets.

However, the Kiev command tried to reassure the public. It once again raised the issue of the imaginary backwardness of Russian industry and its inability to mass-produce modern systems and products. Similar theses soon appeared in the publications of the foreign press in the wake of reports from the Ukrainian General Staff.

For the next few months, the X-50 missile was practically forgotten, and new reports about it appeared only in the first days of August. In the Russian-speaking blogosphere, and then in the press, rumors appeared about the beginning of the combat use of such missiles as part of the Special Operation. Basically, only some sorties from the Kh-50 and attacks on Ukrainian targets are mentioned. For example, Rossiyskaya Gazeta on August 3, citing unnamed media, wrote about the growth in production and the active use of such missiles.

However, such rumors are not confirmed. Official reports on the entry into service of long-range aviation of the Kh-50 missile and its use have also not been received. In addition, there is no relevant information from the enemy - he did not show the wreckage and details that could be associated with the X-50 product.

Interim results

Apparently, the Kh-50 / Kh-SD cruise missile project is still at the stage of development, testing, etc. It takes some time to complete the work, and the appearance of finished products in the arsenals of the Aerospace Forces remains a matter of an uncertain future. When exactly this will happen is unknown.

Despite such uncertainty, the promising Russian ALCM is already causing concern to the enemy. The Ukrainian General Staff spoke directly about the danger of the X-50 product for its military infrastructure. Strikes of this kind are expected in the fall, in a few weeks or months.

The reaction of Ukrainian military leaders to a promising Russian missile is incomprehensible. Since February-March last year, our long-range aviation has been actively using several types of existing ALCMs against enemy targets. Attack UAVs, sea-based missiles and land-based systems are also actively used. All these funds cause significant damage to the Ukrainian infrastructure. Why in this situation they decided to pay attention to a promising model of weapons is a big question.

Waiting for the rocket

According to known data, the development of the future X-SD rocket or "Product 715" started in the early nineties. The purpose of this project was to create a new medium-range ALCM to complement the existing long-range Kh-55 product and the promising Kh-101. The future X-SD was planned to be used in situations where the range of these missiles would be excessive.

The development of a new rocket was carried out at the Raduga State Design Bureau named after A.I. AND I. Bereznyak, who had extensive experience in creating such weapons. Due to the well-known problems of the nineties, the speed of the work left much to be desired, and the main part of the design was completed only in the first half of the tenth.

In 2014, Raduga and the Tupolev company entered into a contract on joint activities. It is assumed that this agreement was related to the X-SD / X-50 project. In 2016-18 the project has reached the stage of ground testing of individual rocket assemblies and / or the entire product assembly. Accordingly, by the end of the decade, the first test launches could take place, and in the early twenties the rocket could be brought into service.

How these stages of work went is unknown. Official information of this kind has not yet been received, although rumors of various kinds circulate. However, it can be expected that the X-50 project - if it was not abandoned for some reason - is approaching its successful completion. In this case, long-range aviation will receive a completely new weapon in the coming years.

Technical potential

According to known data, the Kh-50 missile is a kind of analogue of the existing Kh-101 and is built using the same or similar solutions and components. It is assumed that the new project again uses a composite airframe with characteristic contours, which reduces radar visibility. There is also a wing and empennage that can be deployed in flight.

The new ALCM is characterized by a reduced flight range, which reduces the required amount of fuel and makes it possible to reduce the dimensions of the airframe. The serial product X-101 has a length of approx. 7,5 m and a launch weight of 2,4 tons. Accordingly, the promising Kh-50 missile should be significantly smaller and lighter.

It is supposed to use a short-life turbojet engine. With its help, the X-50 should develop a high subsonic speed - like the X-55 or X-101. At the same time, the range, according to various estimates, does not exceed 1500-1600 km. For comparison, the existing long-range ALCMs fly 5500 km.

Actual ALCMs are equipped with a guidance system based on inertial and satellite navigation, and also use correction according to a reference terrain map. Probably, in the Kh-SD / "715" project, such a composition of equipment was retained, and it allows you to hit ground targets in the entire range of ranges from the KVO to several meters.

The Kh-50 can carry a high-explosive fragmentation warhead of a large mass. Probably, in terms of the power of the warhead, the new missile does not differ from its non-nuclear predecessors. Nothing is known about the possibility of installing a special warhead.

The carriers of the new ALCM should be the strategic bombers Tu-160 and Tu-95MS - with placement on an internal multi-position ejection mount or on an external sling. Such carriers will be able to take on board up to 10-12 missiles. It cannot be ruled out that the reduced dimensions and weight will make it possible to use the Kh-50 on the Tu-22M3M bomber as well. In all cases, some hardware and software upgrades will be required to be compatible with the missile. It can also be expected that the Kh-50 will initially be included in the ammunition load of the promising PAK DA aircraft.

Weapons of the future

Thus, the Aerospace Forces and the defense industry continue to work on the further development of long-range aviation weapons. In the foreseeable future, the new Kh-50 cruise missile should become the next result of this process. She will have to supplement the existing weapons and, due to other characteristics, expand the combat capabilities of strategic bombers.

At present, long-range aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces has to use Kh-55 and Kh-101 long-range missiles to solve the tasks ahead. Their range at the level of 5500 km is often excessive for such strikes, which worsens the economic performance of a sortie. The new Kh-50 missile will allow performing the same combat missions, but at the same time optimizing costs. In addition, it is possible that the smaller size of the ALCM will increase the ammunition load of the aircraft, and this will be an additional advantage.

The updated range of missiles, which includes products of different types with different characteristics, will become a more flexible and convenient tool for solving all the intended tasks. Due to this, the combat capabilities of long-range aviation will improve markedly. However, it is not yet known when such changes will occur. Of all the relevant information about the X-50 project, so far there are only rumors without confirmation.

The author strangely linked missiles for strategists and the X-50. X-MD and X-SD (X-50) are declared by the KTRV developer as small-sized. X-MD is already in production, 120 kg, 2,4 m, can be used from a suitable UAV. The X-SD should fit in the fuselage of the SU-57. There are more multi-purpose aviation than strategists, Banderva will not seem enough.

The X-50 in its dimensions can only fit in the fuselage of the Tu-22M3M, Tu-160M and probably Tu-95MSM strategists or on the external suspension of tactical aircraft Su-34, Su-30, Su-35. For the Su-57 they created the X-59MK2 intrafuselage based.

The X-50 will not fit into the Su-57. Only if it is on an external suspension.

The X-59 line is an old, constantly modernized development of the Raduga (started long before the SU-57). The current version of these missiles is already called Kh-69 (just in case). X-SD is a fundamentally new type of missile, the development of which has recently begun. The customer has a natural requirement for it - placement in the fuselage of the SU-57 (because this is not a missile for a strategist).

Kh-69 is the export version of Kh-59MK2.

X-59MK2 was created from scratch, it only has the X-59 index in common with the old Gadfly.

What is recent? Back in 2017, in the West, the same Butovsky wrote that the X-SD / X-50 missile has been developed for several years. And in terms of its dimensions, fighters can carry it on an external suspension, and strategists inside the fuselage. 57 created Kh-59MK2.

Quite right. Another example: in the 70s, the future Tu-160 was planned to be armed with new small-sized Kh-15 missiles, which should be placed on 4 MKU-6-1 installations, six on each. As a result, these missiles received only the latest Tu-22M3 series, which had only one such installation.

      News from 2020.

By the end of this year, flight tests of the newest Russian X-50 rocket will be completed. The latter received the nickname "invisible" and, not yet having time to take up combat duty, entered the top ten ratings of the world's best air-launched cruise missiles from the military directory Jane's.

Finally, the "crown" of the design idea, which combined all the best from the X-101 program, was the simpler and inexpensive Kh-50 aviation missile. The length of the projectile is only 6 meters with a total weight of 1600 kg, which allows you to hit targets at a distance of up to 1500 km. Plus, engineers managed to reduce the effective area of its dispersion to 0,01 square meters. m, turning the new rocket into a real "invisibility".

First of all, you need to decide what kind of warhead the military needs in terms of efficiency, 500, 1000 or 3000 kg.
In principle, 1500-1600 km of range is enough not to enter the enemy's air defense zone. Well, the altitude.
now probably it is 30-50 meters. And the speed in the final section of the flight is several Machs.
Doesn't that sound like Storm Sadow?

I'm interested in something else - is it possible to create the most unified CR for all branches of the Armed Forces? Once, even under the Union, there were such projects, the control systems for them went under the codes project 516, 517, 518 for the subsonic and project 536, 537, 538 for the supersonic version. The differences are in the start method and the corresponding SS algorithms.

A lighter missile, something like our Storm Shadow, is vitally needed for use with the Su-34, and ideally with the Su-30. Since the takeoffs and flights to the launch line of our strategists and heavy missile carriers are easily tracked by the technical intelligence of our former "partners", it is necessary to give such a rocket for "dry" ones, whose launches are made much more often and what load the take-off aircraft carries is not so easy to consider, time the enemy's response will be drastically reduced. Our army is obliged to have all the tools of armed struggle and, most importantly, to use them when necessary.

Something like our Storm Shadow has already been created. This is the KR Kh-59MK2.

In Ukraine, a high-precision medium-range air-to-air missile X-59MK2 was used, which is designed to destroy various surface and ground targets. Aif.ru found out what features this ammunition has.
An air-to-surface Kh-59MK2 air-to-surface missile was detected by outdoor surveillance cameras a few seconds before the attack on Ukrainian army targets in the Nikolaev region. To date, this is the first documented fact of the use of a missile of this class.

Kh-59MK2 has a combined guidance system based on several blocks. It includes a strapdown inertial navigation system, satellite navigation equipment, a correlation-optical homing head and an autopilot. For aiming at the target, the X-59MK2 uses a complex method of joint operation of control systems. The missile enters the target area using inertial navigation with correction according to the signals of navigation satellites. After the target is detected, it is guided using an optical homing head, which carries out the final guidance of the missile to the desired object.

On trial. And no one ever promised to start testing them before 2023.
So, On February 17, 2021, the Russian media reported that tests of a new generation of hypersonic missiles began on the fifth generation Su-57 fighter. This new air-launched rocket with a ramjet engine, called the "Gremlin", along with the sea "Zircon", is, after the already famous "Iskander" and "Daggers", the second generation of Russian hypersound, which has come into operation over the past 7-10 years. About the winged Russian Gremlin, a source in the Defense Ministry told the Novosti news agency: “The missile provides maneuverable flight at hypersonic speed for a long time and is designed to destroy such priority targets as enemy air and missile defense facilities, radar stations, enemy launchers cruise and ballistic missiles ... "

And on February 20, new information appeared in the media, according to which The Gremlin hypersonic missile will enter state trials in 2023.

The turbojet engine spoils the main thing - the cheapness of the product. If we are talking about single-use ammunition, then only a direct-flow engine makes it possible to produce tens of thousands of items per year.

Straightforward is probably correct. What is the cheapness of ammunition in wartime. This is ammunition with the desired characteristics but with a short warranty period. Cheap iron, cheap plastic, cheap electronic plateau. They did it and immediately went into battle. In peacetime, the service life of ammunition is dozens of years from expensive materials .. I once commented that for old Soviet-made bombs, you can use wood instead of metal for arranging wings. Any furniture factory could make this device for the price of a cheap chest of drawers. But you need to bomb around the clock and cheaply, if you want to win. soldier

Neither a right-or left-hand engine will give cheapness, because there are already other requirements for materials, it is impossible to fly at low altitudes, accelerating stages, and so on. And a small jet engine ... Firstly, a very significant part of the price of a conventional turbojet engine comes from the resource and, therefore, materials. But it doesn't take thousands of hours. It takes from half an hour to a couple of hours. Accordingly, materials can be taken easier. Their design is much simpler than turbojet engines on aircraft. Further manufacturability - 3D printers to help you. And as a result, turbojet engines for missiles from 100kg to ~ 1500 will be a penny by the standards of military spending. Look at the prices for turbojet engines for aircraft models. In fact, they can also be used))

As many correctly write here, the CD of increased power is urgently needed. A typical today's warhead of 500 kg is clearly not enough for durable purposes such as bridges. You need at least 1000 kg.

It depends on what to put in it, if o ... n or r ... n with all sorts of rdx, then - yes. And, if in India you buy for rupees (which we have hung there) ICL20 - then it’s quite for yourself ... At the same time, in "lancets". The Indians, it seems, also picked up the plasticizer (which the mattress covers did not do) even for use in artillery (due to the increased possibility of initiation). For 20 years to this day, anti-resistance in the defense industry has not arisen in our country (although scientists who synthesized much earlier than the Indians tried to move). All from open sources.

The Armed Forces have all the necessary necessary power. We just lack the will to apply all this. The same "Dagger" with its high accuracy can be launched on a bridge support, breaking it into dust. And do not smoke the roadbed with smaller ammunition. At the same time, no air defense will interfere. However, there is no application.

there is no rocket, but there is already an article. I immediately looked who the author was, well, everything is clear, I didn’t even read it. the same as the story about the KA-52M recently - POSSIBLE, PROBABLY, PROBABLY, etc. nothing new.

    ... while optimizing costs.
An archi-important task. So far, our country, with all this supposedly non-war, is confidently going down the drain.

ABOUT!!! Thanks for the tip! Looked at the structural formula - how beautiful! It can't be that we haven't done it either. Everything, of course, is classified to death, alas ... To be honest, even in a search engine it's scary to type. For we are sitting under the cap. Alas, the cap of the special services should not be pulled in vain.

The new ALCM is characterized by a reduced flight range, which reduces the required amount of fuel and makes it possible to reduce the dimensions of the airframe.

Well, why then reduce the range? If it became possible to hang it on the Su-30 / Su-34, then yes. And here all the savings are a couple of hundred liters of kerosene (the engine is the same, the electronics are the same, that is, the price of the rocket will not change much) with a significantly reduced range.

In the X50, there is a wash only for turning the tu22m3 into a carrier of the kr, whether the kr can fit under the wing of the su30-34 is not clear. And the main trend of such ammunition is for use in tactical aircraft

Neither a right- or left-hand engine will give cheapness, because there are already other requirements for materials,

What "other" material requirements for "left-hand" engines will be at subsonic speeds?
Their problem is rather low efficiency at subsonic speeds and, accordingly, the range of the product.
But it doesn't take thousands of hours. It takes from half an hour to a couple of hours. Accordingly, materials can be taken easier.

For left-hand engines, some special materials are needed, but for turbojet engines, can it be simpler? All the same, an hour or two they must spin at considerable temperatures. And the cheaper the materials and the temperature below the turbojet engine will lose efficiency - their main advantage over both right- and left-hand engines.
And as a result, turbojet engines for missiles from 100kg to ~ 1500 will be a penny by the standards of military spending.

As a result, ramjet and puwrjet engines will always be an order of magnitude simpler and cheaper than turbojet engines. With the same technology, it is possible to produce several times more missiles.

X102 launch from Mi8 helicopters. For 8 missiles one helicopter. 3000 for Europe and the end of conflicts, only property abroad interferes with the state apparatus

Right. Well done guys, engineers and designers who created this rocket ..
