Tablet artillery complex 1A50 "Commander-VT"
General view of the tablet 1A50 "Commander-VT"
The missile forces and artillery of the Russian army are armed with a variety of fire control systems. In the foreseeable future, the troops may receive a new model of this kind, which has a number of important features and advantages. The tablet artillery complex 1A50 Komandor-VT has been developed and is already being tested. This device, having a small size and weight, will allow gunners to perform the necessary calculations and prepare for firing, as well as simplify all such procedures.
From order to test
The development of a new software and hardware artillery fire control system started in 2015. The future product received the code "Commander-VT" and the index GRAU 1A50. The executor of the work was JSC NPP Military Technologies (St. Petersburg). The aim of the project was to create a lightweight and compact tablet computer with a specific set of components and special software that meets the requirements of land artillery.
Over the next few years, the specialists of "Military Technologies" carried out a large amount of research and development work of various kinds. Based on their results, the final appearance of the device and its software were determined. At the beginning of the current decade, preparations for production and future tests began.
Products 1A50 at the exhibition in April 2023
The finished Komandor-VT complex was first shown at the beginning of April 2023. The Mikhailovskaya Military Academy (St. Petersburg) held a symposium “Directions for Improving the Theory and Practice of the Combat Use of Strategic Missile Forces”, which included an exhibition of modern developments. One of its exhibits was the 1A50 complex.
Soon the complex got to the landfill. On April 20, it was reported that Military Technologies and the Mikhailovskaya Academy tested the Komandor-VT product at the Luga artillery range. With the help of the new device, calculations were carried out for firing from an 82-mm mortar. The complex and its operators successfully determined the coordinates of the firing position and the target, compiled a weather bulletin based on the available data, calculated the data for firing, and then corrected the fire.
The tablet complex coped with the tasks of fire control, and also received good reviews. At the same time, representatives of the Academy pointed to the need to improve its ergonomics. Apparently, the developer organization will take into account the wishes of military specialists and continue to improve the promising complex.
Obviously, the tests of "Commander-VT" will continue. The overall reliability and effectiveness of both hardware and software should be tested. In addition, it is necessary to work out the use of the complex with receiver systems of other classes and types, as well as with rocket artillery. The integration of the 1A50 product into existing contours and artillery control systems is also of great importance.
Tests "Commander-VT" using 82-mm mortar
Further events are generally predictable. The product "Commander-VT" will pass all the tests and fine-tuning, during which it will confirm the characteristics and get rid of the remaining shortcomings. After that, it can be recommended for adoption, as a result of which ground artillery will receive a new convenient tool that provides all the necessary capabilities.
According to the developer, the 1A50 product is compatible with almost all types of cannon and rocket artillery in service with the Russian army. "Commander-VT" can control units with 122 and 152 mm caliber guns, mortars from 82 to 120 mm, as well as Grad, Uragan rocket systems and the corresponding versions of the Tornado MLRS.
Software and hardware
Artillery complex 1A50 "Commander-VT" is actually a tablet computer and a set of auxiliary tools for its operation. The hardware part of the complex is a tablet with a diagonal of 8,1 or 10,1 inches in a shock-resistant dust and moisture-proof case. The computer has a touch screen with FullHD resolution, and is also equipped with a set of "physical" buttons on one of the faces.
The tablet is powered by a replaceable battery. The package includes two such devices. With their help, the complex can work without recharging for 6 hours. "Commander-VT" with an installed battery weighs 1,22 kg. The package includes several chargers with the ability to use different energy sources.
The full specification and list of tablet components are not disclosed. It is reported that it has USB and Ethernet interfaces, and is also equipped with a satellite navigation module that uses GPS and GLONASS signals. It also provides for interfacing with modern domestic radio stations of several types for data exchange.
In the current configuration, the 1A50 product uses the AstraLinux 1.7 Smolensk Edition operating system. Fire control tasks are performed using the Komandor-VT Tablet Artillery Complex program developed by Military Technologies. The program has an intuitive interface and allows you to perform a variety of operations related to fire control. It also provides an encryption module to protect data transmitted over the air.
Control tasks
The hardware and software of the "Commander-VT" are able to determine their own location, as well as receive target designation or independently calculate the target's coordinates from the available data. It also provides for meteorological training based on data from relevant sources. If necessary, the tablet allows you to make a decision and attack an unplanned target.
Based on information about the position of the battery and the intended target, data for firing is calculated. According to the results of the shooting, the complex makes adjustments and refines the aiming. Correction is performed according to the observed breaks, according to the stopwatch, according to data from rangefinders or radar, etc.
Tablet interface in one of the modes
The 1A50 complex helps the commander of an artillery unit to make certain decisions. It allows you to choose the optimal placement of a firing position, build diagrams of dead zones and fields of invisibility, determine advance routes, etc. Calculation of trajectories of conventional and guided projectiles is provided.
Mobility and efficiency
The Russian missile forces and artillery are armed with fire control systems of a number of types. All of them provide a solution to the necessary tasks and allow you to fire at targets with high accuracy in all ranges. In the future, the new tablet artillery complex 1A50 Komandor-VT may join this set of controls.
During recent tests, the 1A50 product showed some of its functions and received good ratings. It can be assumed that it will cope with further tests, which will use a wider range of guns and ammunition. However, the need for certain improvements aimed at improving the design and software cannot yet be ruled out.
"Commander-VT" or other developments of this kind should be of great interest to our army. Its potential, first of all, is provided by a successful combination of functions and ergonomics. The 1A50 complex is capable of solving all the main tasks in the context of artillery fire control, and at the same time is a compact portable device that is easy to use.
Unlike the terminals of other control systems, the tablet computer can be easily used by the calculations of any systems, from wearable / transportable mortars to full-fledged self-propelled guns. This simplifies the process of implementing and deploying such controls.
Like other digital complexes of modern development, Komandor-VT is distinguished by a certain simplicity of modernization and improvement. These processes will primarily be carried out through software updates. At the same time, there are virtually no special requirements for updating the hardware, and it can be used for a long time.
Modern tendencies
The effectiveness of artillery and multiple launch rocket systems depends not only on the characteristics of guns and installations. Of great importance are the contours and means of fire control. Much attention has been paid to their development in recent years, and this leads to the emergence and introduction of new samples. The next development in this class was the 1A50 Komandor-VT flatbed artillery system.
To date, "Commander-VT" has passed the design stage and got to the test. In the foreseeable future, having confirmed his capabilities, he will be able to get into the troops. At the same time, the 1A50 product is not the only one of its kind. Certain artillery fire control systems, incl. compact and ergonomic, are being developed by a number of other organizations. And these complexes also have a chance to get into the troops and improve the capabilities of our artillery.
