Tablet artillery complex 1A50 "Commander-VT"
General view of the tablet 1A50 "Commander-VT"

The missile forces and artillery of the Russian army are armed with a variety of fire control systems. In the foreseeable future, the troops may receive a new model of this kind, which has a number of important features and advantages. The tablet artillery complex 1A50 Komandor-VT has been developed and is already being tested. This device, having a small size and weight, will allow gunners to perform the necessary calculations and prepare for firing, as well as simplify all such procedures.

From order to test

The development of a new software and hardware artillery fire control system started in 2015. The future product received the code "Commander-VT" and the index GRAU 1A50. The executor of the work was JSC NPP Military Technologies (St. Petersburg). The aim of the project was to create a lightweight and compact tablet computer with a specific set of components and special software that meets the requirements of land artillery.

Over the next few years, the specialists of "Military Technologies" carried out a large amount of research and development work of various kinds. Based on their results, the final appearance of the device and its software were determined. At the beginning of the current decade, preparations for production and future tests began.

Products 1A50 at the exhibition in April 2023

The finished Komandor-VT complex was first shown at the beginning of April 2023. The Mikhailovskaya Military Academy (St. Petersburg) held a symposium “Directions for Improving the Theory and Practice of the Combat Use of Strategic Missile Forces”, which included an exhibition of modern developments. One of its exhibits was the 1A50 complex.

Soon the complex got to the landfill. On April 20, it was reported that Military Technologies and the Mikhailovskaya Academy tested the Komandor-VT product at the Luga artillery range. With the help of the new device, calculations were carried out for firing from an 82-mm mortar. The complex and its operators successfully determined the coordinates of the firing position and the target, compiled a weather bulletin based on the available data, calculated the data for firing, and then corrected the fire.

The tablet complex coped with the tasks of fire control, and also received good reviews. At the same time, representatives of the Academy pointed to the need to improve its ergonomics. Apparently, the developer organization will take into account the wishes of military specialists and continue to improve the promising complex.

Obviously, the tests of "Commander-VT" will continue. The overall reliability and effectiveness of both hardware and software should be tested. In addition, it is necessary to work out the use of the complex with receiver systems of other classes and types, as well as with rocket artillery. The integration of the 1A50 product into existing contours and artillery control systems is also of great importance.

Tests "Commander-VT" using 82-mm mortar

Further events are generally predictable. The product "Commander-VT" will pass all the tests and fine-tuning, during which it will confirm the characteristics and get rid of the remaining shortcomings. After that, it can be recommended for adoption, as a result of which ground artillery will receive a new convenient tool that provides all the necessary capabilities.

According to the developer, the 1A50 product is compatible with almost all types of cannon and rocket artillery in service with the Russian army. "Commander-VT" can control units with 122 and 152 mm caliber guns, mortars from 82 to 120 mm, as well as Grad, Uragan rocket systems and the corresponding versions of the Tornado MLRS.

Software and hardware

Artillery complex 1A50 "Commander-VT" is actually a tablet computer and a set of auxiliary tools for its operation. The hardware part of the complex is a tablet with a diagonal of 8,1 or 10,1 inches in a shock-resistant dust and moisture-proof case. The computer has a touch screen with FullHD resolution, and is also equipped with a set of "physical" buttons on one of the faces.

The tablet is powered by a replaceable battery. The package includes two such devices. With their help, the complex can work without recharging for 6 hours. "Commander-VT" with an installed battery weighs 1,22 kg. The package includes several chargers with the ability to use different energy sources.

The full specification and list of tablet components are not disclosed. It is reported that it has USB and Ethernet interfaces, and is also equipped with a satellite navigation module that uses GPS and GLONASS signals. It also provides for interfacing with modern domestic radio stations of several types for data exchange.

In the current configuration, the 1A50 product uses the AstraLinux 1.7 Smolensk Edition operating system. Fire control tasks are performed using the Komandor-VT Tablet Artillery Complex program developed by Military Technologies. The program has an intuitive interface and allows you to perform a variety of operations related to fire control. It also provides an encryption module to protect data transmitted over the air.

Control tasks

The hardware and software of the "Commander-VT" are able to determine their own location, as well as receive target designation or independently calculate the target's coordinates from the available data. It also provides for meteorological training based on data from relevant sources. If necessary, the tablet allows you to make a decision and attack an unplanned target.

Based on information about the position of the battery and the intended target, data for firing is calculated. According to the results of the shooting, the complex makes adjustments and refines the aiming. Correction is performed according to the observed breaks, according to the stopwatch, according to data from rangefinders or radar, etc.

Tablet interface in one of the modes

The 1A50 complex helps the commander of an artillery unit to make certain decisions. It allows you to choose the optimal placement of a firing position, build diagrams of dead zones and fields of invisibility, determine advance routes, etc. Calculation of trajectories of conventional and guided projectiles is provided.

Mobility and efficiency

The Russian missile forces and artillery are armed with fire control systems of a number of types. All of them provide a solution to the necessary tasks and allow you to fire at targets with high accuracy in all ranges. In the future, the new tablet artillery complex 1A50 Komandor-VT may join this set of controls.

During recent tests, the 1A50 product showed some of its functions and received good ratings. It can be assumed that it will cope with further tests, which will use a wider range of guns and ammunition. However, the need for certain improvements aimed at improving the design and software cannot yet be ruled out.

"Commander-VT" or other developments of this kind should be of great interest to our army. Its potential, first of all, is provided by a successful combination of functions and ergonomics. The 1A50 complex is capable of solving all the main tasks in the context of artillery fire control, and at the same time is a compact portable device that is easy to use.

Unlike the terminals of other control systems, the tablet computer can be easily used by the calculations of any systems, from wearable / transportable mortars to full-fledged self-propelled guns. This simplifies the process of implementing and deploying such controls.

Like other digital complexes of modern development, Komandor-VT is distinguished by a certain simplicity of modernization and improvement. These processes will primarily be carried out through software updates. At the same time, there are virtually no special requirements for updating the hardware, and it can be used for a long time.

Modern tendencies

The effectiveness of artillery and multiple launch rocket systems depends not only on the characteristics of guns and installations. Of great importance are the contours and means of fire control. Much attention has been paid to their development in recent years, and this leads to the emergence and introduction of new samples. The next development in this class was the 1A50 Komandor-VT flatbed artillery system.

To date, "Commander-VT" has passed the design stage and got to the test. In the foreseeable future, having confirmed his capabilities, he will be able to get into the troops. At the same time, the 1A50 product is not the only one of its kind. Certain artillery fire control systems, incl. compact and ergonomic, are being developed by a number of other organizations. And these complexes also have a chance to get into the troops and improve the capabilities of our artillery.

You are making a mistake, there is no unified system so far. We are only trying to plug the holes with the "Commander" .. A unified artillery fire control system based on KSAUA was built for 30 years, unsuccessfully. As a result, only people are transported on KSHI-kah.

Here I am about the same. What is difficult is not clear. All calculations are based on formulas, fill in the coefficients and that's it. even the ancient MK-54 can handle this. A modern pribludy such as their coordinates and points on the map, quite facilitate the initial data entry. It was quite possible to first saturate the artillery with simple gadgets for calculation, and in the process already improve it for communication, automatic receipt of coordinates, etc. Otherwise, it turned out that they shoot like 70 years ago, and the device is still in development. Drank dough coupled with stupidity.

"What is difficult is not clear. All calculations are based on formulas, fill in the coefficients and that's it. even the ancient MK-54 can handle this."- you are mistaken. Indeed, the methodical approach to the calculation of installations is predominantly unified, but the firing tables for various AS and ammunition for them have dozens of features that require precise individual tuning and testing.

Well, my home tablet can also determine its coordinates using GPS. And if you charge programs for artillery shooting, then it will be the same. The point is not only in the tablet, but in high-quality artillery reconnaissance and digital guidance of shells, if the gun fires guided. The lack of proper counter-battery combat is a shame.

According to the idea, one tablet is not enough, the battery kit should include a weather station (or better, a weather radar), the gun kit should include an electronic vertical pickup sensor with an indicator and automatic accounting for the inclination of the gun trunnions, a mechanical horizontal pickup sensor, a switch, a modem, a tablet. How it should work - we got the coordinates, the PDA calculates the sight, level, goniometer, the installation of a remote fuse (if necessary) for the projectile / charge. The settings are transferred to the gun tablets. Those, using individual corrections, calculate data for each gun. The gunner aims up to the stop commands from the aiming sensors. Readiness information is sent to the tablet of the senior battery officer. SOB gives the command to open fire.

Uh-huh ... so here you are, comrade artillerymen, PUO-9, and don’t grumble.
Who said "but NM has artbooks, for which there are constant updates for specific types of guns and shells - up to MT-12, D-1 and even 2S4 with "Daredevil""? Oh, you are an enemy of the people - only certified and verified funds from well-deserved research institutes ... in twenty years.
Artillery notepad is a series of android applications that has been developed for many years by a group of programmers specifically for those who need to shoot quickly and accurately, and all sorts of “unparalleled software and hardware systems” of similar functionality from the RF Ministry of Defense will almost never shine. Each “notebook” can most often serve the firing of artillery systems of the same type, instantly preparing gun aiming data according to the entered position, target, type of ammunition and weather data. of the first shot, the notepad also instantly recalculates the corrections transmitted by the spotter into sight corrections.

The artbook allows you to plan the work of artillery in advance, compile lists of planned targets, work with maps of the area, putting targets and firing positions on them, and indicating on the map where the arrival was, so that the program calculates the corrections. In general, a full cycle of automation, and visual automation, of the firing process is provided.

Of course, this does not negate the full-fledged training of gunners associated with the good old PUO-9M, artillery circles and paper firing tables. A person must understand what he is doing, what numbers, where and why he drives in, and what exactly the program then does with them. (This is me now, if anything, I practically quoted the manual for the “Artbook”, written by the creators.) The program does not cancel the training, but it greatly simplifies the work.

With all due respect, it's good that the complex "hit the landfill." It is not clear whether there is a beholder / performance characteristics from the Moscow Region despite the GRAU index. But 8 years of development, from an order in 2015, speaks of sand in the already unreliable connection between the military and designers - during this time, both the hardware and the algorithms and goals of the project have changed several times. Especially - the domestic IP base.

Testing the reliability of iron at the test site is an anachronism. There are military standards, Russian and foreign, testing laboratories. At the test site, the characteristics are CONFIRMED, NO SURPRISES !!.

But it's good to experience. The material is similar to a retelling of the Military Tech slides.

When I led the development of modems, there was always the eternal question "when" ?? And they always set the task for release dates, functionality and cost. It has never been possible to meet deadlines without simplifying requirements and increasing costs!! Always these three variables have been mutually exclusive - working with a key customer to correlate and trade off our capabilities and their requirements. And this was always possible - they found less demanding consumers ...

TIMING, TIMING HAS ALWAYS BEEN MOST IMPORTANT in winning the market position of a pioneer, an innovator…

The answer has ALWAYS been flashability with improved software, from V0.1 to VX.Y. Released reduced REQUIRED functionality as soon as possible, with a plan for flashing and cost reduction. And ALWAYS - with known defects!!! which could be minimized by the rules of use ... always with defects !!!

And here for mortars, and cannon artillery, and for MLRS, and for ..,, But it’s necessary - from simple to complex. This is bad development management for both MO and performers !! 8 years and not yet in the army ... that's what the "scientific" companies should be doing - the accelerated introduction of weapons and military equipment !!

This is NOT neurosurgery and the launch of space devices.

The idea of "scientific mouths" did not come from a good life. And there is no more science there than in a school circle, except that the toys are a little more advanced. An attempt in the military sphere to introduce advanced civilian methods of extreme programming has repeatedly led to sad consequences.
Therefore, for a consistent R&D system, the start of military trials in 8 years is quite a sane period. Especially if we take into account the requirements for the integration of Komandor-VT to tactical communication systems and numerous modifications of automated control systems with waxes, only its protocols can be understood for more than one year.

Yes, there are standards (GOSTs, OSTs and TUs), and until you do everything that is written in them, the PZ will not sign anything for you. And the standards do not distinguish between a new tank or a computer with a program. We won - cooperative neighbors were forced to drag a computer to the workshop just to burn a CD-ROM with their product. And this is also not easy: not only the heads of the shop are excited, but also the 1st department.

Yeah. But if earlier you submitted mathematics for certification and could install it at the customer’s, now (according to the new rules) it can only be installed by the military after certification is completed, and this is six months to a year. If earlier, without recertification, you could change 10% of the code, now - shish. How now it will be possible to correct the identified errors is generally unclear.

For comparison, in the same 2015, the Polish (!) WB Group company took up absolutely similar task - development of a universal artillery computer. And in 2017 (!) It produced a completely finished product, which immediately entered service.

Oh, how, only in 2015 they attended to. Yes, and now there are a lot of video and photo frames, where the PUO-9M, PRK-69, not even PRK-75, and artillery counters continue to torment. The "compact, contract, well-equipped army" did not bother to give electronic control systems and devices for calculating corrections.
True, this trouble has been going on since shaggy times. Back in the 80s, I witnessed how a rotten grandfather, but a general, yelled at a TEACHER of the discipline Shooting and fire control, who used the Elektronika MK-52 programmable calculator to calculate data for shooting and adjusting fire. This general was never fired. And this rotten stump yelled that they fired on the North-Western Front without any computers, that computers are sabotage, that they should be banned. And further down the list are all mortal sins.
Alas, in artillery we have trouble with this.

I don't understand why it's so difficult. I see only one reason - inertia of thinking. In the old fashioned way, they think that an artillery officer should be counting on something. Why force electronics to imitate the work of a person, when it is necessary to demand from it the fulfillment of its task, by electronic methods.

For shooting, only two numbers are needed: azimuth and elevation. These figures can be calculated by electronics located anywhere. Why does she need intermediate links and data transfer stages? Why does an artilleryman in a position need a demonstrated map on a tablet screen? I would also understand if a video tied to the coordinates from drones was transmitted to the tablet. But to have the equivalent of a paper map to make calculations that any smartphone can handle... and even a programmable calculator?! For what?

Why first determine the coordinates on the ground, then transfer them to the position of the battery, enter it again and read something? Everything can be done ten times easier. Is everyone so blind that they don't see this? Our designers are all completely impotent?!

Well, the coordinates and directional angle of a firing battery or a single gun (self-propelled guns) still have to somehow determine it on their own, otherwise how will the command post at a distance control the fire. Well, then the CP will give the azimuth and elevation (angle) to the panorama.

"But to have the equivalent of a paper map to make calculations that any smartphone can handle... and even a programmable calculator?! For what?"- an electronic card is mainly used as an interface element of the decision support system:
      - placement of a firing position relative to the selected target, a group of targets (with automatic highlighting of the range to them, options for ammunition charges for the selected AS ....);
      - construction of a terrain profile and a ballistic flight path of a projectile, including for BT ammunition, to select a ballistic option;
      - construction of invisibility schemes to determine the possibility of firing through the crest of the shelter.
In addition, the e.map of the area allows you to quickly create a database of a battery or division according to its battle formation, according to reconnoitered targets, landmarks, meeting points, planned lines of the NZO, PZO, simply by placing them on the map, the coordinates, height and remote control automatically enter the database.
During sighting and correction of fire, marking breaks on the e-map, we automatically calculate corrections with maximum accuracy.
An electronic map is also an indispensable tool for target designation, when information about unplanned (reconnoitered) targets from scouts or a senior commander comes to the tablet via a radio data transmission channel. It's just that a new target appears on the map, the commander sees it immediately visually in relation to his battle formation: one click "accept to defeat" and the calculation of settings for the current battle formation and according to the current weather data is ready.
Well, and finally, all the modern elements of electronic maps - navigators: orientation on the ground, the route of the march when moving out, information about the traffic situation, etc. ... with typical military features with automatic calculation of the speed of the march, advance time ... (always at hand with detail when zooming).

It seems that they were busy for a very long time because of the software. Psheks were strung on Microsoft shells, so they did it in 2 years. And then I had to reinvent the wheel.

I don't understand why it's so difficult. I see only one reason - inertia of thinking. In the old fashioned way, they think that an artillery officer should be counting on something. Why force electronics to imitate the work of a person, when it is necessary to demand from it the fulfillment of its task, by electronic methods.

It is immediately clear that a person has never controlled the fire of at least guns.
Forward and with a song in azimuth and elevation, fire. Didn’t you hear about the amendments to the shooting conditions from the word at all? About the calculated range, about the correction in the goniometer?
And, yes, there is no azimuth in artillery, there is a DIRECTIONAL ANGLE.

The sight on the panorama is not installed, from the word at all, the panorama serves only for horizontal aiming, the elevation angle of the barrel is set according to the scales of the sighting devices and the longitudinal level.

When will this "military gadget" be seen on the Ukrainian theater???????????????? Or will everything be like with the domestic "miracle tablet from Chubais," for every Russian student?

but it turned out to show how swindlers from the St. Petersburg company "Military Technologies" have been cutting the budget for eight years under the guise of "various kinds of work" and it is not known when this cut will end.

How easy are you to spread such loud statements, judge by yourself?
The development of "Commander" is initiative, carried out exclusively at the expense of the enterprise, not a penny has been received from the budget.

Implementation is a lengthy process. And how long it will take is incomprehensible. And what will we get as a result, too.

He is morally obsolete before he was even born. Into the furnace. Order imported, simple, strong smartphones similar to Android with an art pad and free maps and distribute them to people. Now they are distributing analogues to state-owned companies; they need to be wrapped in a reinforced case and given to the military. Let the Lights Out switch off the mobile network to airplane mode, AI Larisa will suggest a suitable quote from the Charter and find the store closest to the LBS.

In my opinion this is a cut. To urgently saturate the troops, any commercial tablet for Android is suitable, where you can upload a sof that can be written in a week.
To do this, you don’t need to waste time and pay for such miracle developers.
The fact is that there is no own element base!!! Therefore, it is much more practical to order a ready-made solution in China, rather than dragging ALL the components from there and assembling a construction set on your knees. Remove the native firmware and replace the transceiver modules. That's it, the device is ready. Applications for uploading can be ordered in bulk and uploaded after testing. The case or case can be ordered there, but this route will not allow “effective managers” to take a bite out of their budget.
Nobody forbids the development of our technology in parallel, but such devices were needed in the troops yesterday. As a result of the lack of analysts in the Ministry of Defense, we have a lack of drones, modern artillery systems, even in the RZSO we are behind world trends. We control automated STS; even the APU has its own design. In all these positions, it was the USSR that set fashion in the arms market. The world's first automated control system, also from the USSR.
