The Possibility and Consequences of the Delivery to Ukraine of Rifles and Machine Guns Developed for the US Armed Forces under the NGSW Program

The Russian special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine is called an artillery war - it is from artillery fire that both sides suffer the greatest losses. Nevertheless, small arms weapon has not disappeared anywhere, it is still the main individual weapon of an infantryman and is actively used on the battlefield, both by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (RF Armed Forces).

Russian Armed Forces

In Russia, the experience gained during the SVO led to another modernization of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, more precisely, the latest AK-12. From the main one: a non-removable slotted flash hider appeared, which provides quick installation / removal of the silencer directly on top of it, a fuse-fire translator with two-way switching, a new front sight and a diopter sight with three settings - a direct shot, low illumination and 600 meters, an L-shaped butt with the ability to adjustment of the length, height of the back of the head and crest, a new forearm and a fire control handle. Otherwise, it's still the same good old Kalashnikov assault rifle.

Characteristically, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are gradually coming to an understanding of the need for widespread use of silencers in combination with supersonic cartridges. Modern muffler designs can withstand thousands or even tens of thousands of shots. Although they do not completely muffle the sound, they significantly reduce its level, allowing you to work indoors even without hearing protection (which is still undesirable, since there are other sources of acoustic influences - enemy weapons, explosions, etc.). In addition, modern silencers can reduce recoil and completely eliminate the muzzle flash that occurs during a shot, which is especially important at night and at dusk.

In principle, any type of small arms can be upgraded almost indefinitely, but this will not provide a jump in its tactical and technical characteristics. This can only be achieved by simultaneously changing the ammunition and developing a new type of small arms for it (or upgrading old weapons to new ammunition).

US Armed Forces

This is exactly what the United States did by developing a promising weapon-cartridge complex as part of the NGSW program. Currently the NGSW program is completed, the winner is determined, the most conservative samples were selected from all the submitted samples.

The winner was Sig Sauer. The NGSW-R (Next Generation Squad Weapon - Rifle) SIG MCX Spear (spear) automatic rifle presented by her, which received the army designation XM5 (according to other sources - XM7), should replace the M4A1 carbine in the troops, which is essentially a modification of the M16 rifle - to the present moment, the Americans actually followed the same path as we did with the Kalashnikov assault rifle.

In turn, developed on the basis of the technical solutions of the NGSW-R rifle, the NGSW-AR light machine gun, which received the army designation SIG XM250, will replace the currently used M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) light machine gun.

SIG XM250 light machine gun (top) and SIG XM5/XM7 automatic rifle (bottom)

Both samples of this weapon are based on the new hybrid metal cartridge .277 Fury (fury) of 6,8x51 mm caliber. Made in the dimensions of the already quite old .308 Winchester cartridge of 7,62x51 mm caliber, the .277 Fury cartridge provides more pressure in the barrel and more energy of the shot, which, in combination with fast-burning powder and the optimal ballistic coefficient of the bullet with the same barrel length, provides a greater range of a direct shot , better trajectory flatness, better penetration existing and prospective means of individual armor protection (SIBZ), compared to the .308 cartridge and other cartridges developed from it. At the same time, the mass of the .277 Fury cartridge is approximately 20% less than the mass of the .308 Winchester cartridge.

Cartridges .277 Fury in machine gun belt

Characteristically, in fact, the main advantage of the .277 Fury cartridge is given by the steel base of the case, which allows it to hold more pressure than pure brass cases - a clear indicator of the influence of technological processes on the efficiency of the final product.

Otherwise, the .277 Fury cartridge is largely similar to the 6,5mm Creedmoor 6,5x48mm cartridge, the 7mm-08 Remington 7x52mm cartridge, the .243 Winchester 6x52mm cartridge, and the 1958mm / 7 cartridge developed in 308, made on the basis of cases of the aforementioned .308 Winchester cartridge. That is, in fact, for many decades in small arms there has been trampling around and around without any serious breakthroughs, such as “Why don’t we try to revive the idea of a hundred years ago”.

Sectional case and cartridge .277 Fury (fury) caliber 6,8x51 mm

Perhaps the most modern and technologically advanced element of the NGSW program is the XM157 Fire Control sighting system, developed by Vortex. Made on the basis of advanced technologies, it includes optics with a variable magnification of 1-8x30, a laser rangefinder, a ballistic calculator, a weather station, a digital compass, a wireless communication module, a laser designator (LCD) in the visible and infrared wavelengths, as well as a digital display , which provides the overlay of data coming from both built-in sensors and external sources on the field of view of the shooter.

Vortex XM157 Fire Control sighting system

In April 2022, the US military published information that SIG Sauer received a contract under the NGSW program and will replace the M4 carbine and M249 SAW over the next 10 years.

Will the APU receive NGSW?

We can confidently say that the probability of deliveries of the XM157 Fire Control sighting system to Ukraine is minimal - the United States is very zealous about the removal of sighting systems from the country, Ukraine even received M777 howitzers without digital means of firing preparation. As for the SIG XM5 / XM7 rifles and SIG XM250 light machine guns, everything is not so clear-cut here.

On the one hand, there will be no mass deliveries, since the US Armed Forces and themselves have few such toys. In addition, the supply of small arms in a new, previously unused caliber will require a regular supply of .277 Fury ammunition, which is even more difficult than the supply of rifles.

But the supply of a limited number - several tens to hundreds of SIG XM5 / XM7 rifles and SIG XM250 light machine guns - is potentially quite possible.

Why is the US Armed Forces?

At the very least, in order to test new weapons in real combat conditions - no field tests will replace this, and the use of SIG XM5 / XM7 rifles and SIG XM250 light machine guns by American special operations forces (SOF) in other parts of the world will not show the picture that will develop after the use of this weapon against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

Thus, SIG XM5 / XM7 rifles and SIG XM250 light machine guns can be received from America by any elite units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine trained and under the control of US Army advisers or attracted representatives of US private military companies (PMCs) - "volunteers".

How will these supplies, if implemented, affect the course of the NWO and its participants?

For Ukraine, no way. Not at all. Limited supplies will not provide any benefits. Only "photos", well, or they can sell.

For the United States, this will rather be a plus - they will gain experience in operating new weapons, while they practically risk nothing - even if the samples fall into the hands of Russian specialists, so what? In mass production, this is inevitable - to steal a rifle or a machine gun, this is not a fighter to steal. And the civilian version of the Sig Sauer MCX is already on sale on the civilian market. The same applies to cartridges - we need technologies, technical processes, without them there will be little sense from the enemy, and they also plan to bring these cartridges to the civilian market.

As for the RF Armed Forces, the limited supply of SIG XM5 / XM7 rifles and SIG XM250 light machine guns does not pose any serious risks to us - these will be injections, albeit unpleasant ones.

The fact is that this weapon requires retraining of personnel for other methods of conducting fire combat, mainly aimed shooting instead of suppression fire, which will potentially increase the range of clashes by “pushing” the enemy away from you.

Will the fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, even in limited numbers, have time to get the appropriate skills? Even so, their capabilities will be limited due to the lack of XM157 Fire Control sighting systems, which will make it impossible to combine them into a single network with the ability to issue target designation, that is, they will fight the old fashioned way, but with new weapons.

Nevertheless, the foregoing does not negate the need for both a careful study of American small arms, cartridges and sighting systems developed under the NGSW program, new tactics for their use, and the search for symmetrical and asymmetric response solutions for use by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

Naturally, besides running in the structure, not even tactics, this will do nothing for the USans, let alone Khikhls, especially if the sights are not brought in ...

I wonder what the weight of the sight with batteries is, its dimensions, and of course the price. Already according to the listed characteristics, opportunities, you can try to create the same for your army. About fifty years ago, something similar was done in the Soviet army, though without a computer and a laser. With batteries of that time it was heavy. It was used in the defense of the starting positions of missile silos. soldier

According to some reports, in the context of the contract signed by Vortex with the Pentagon, the price of one set is around $11 ($2.7 billion for 250 sets over 10 years).
Weight not less than a kilogram.

Increased pressure in the bore, higher bullet speed and its corresponding energy - and what about the barrel resource? As for deliveries to Ukraine - as for me, any are possible (if the "donors" deem it appropriate), except for nuclear weapons.

The resource is fine. Pressure is a consequence of the use of fast-burning gunpowder, and not an enhanced charge. The myth of the super-powerful cartridge appeared only on the topvar. Ballistic characteristics are achieved by optimizing the bullet, and fast-burning gunpowder made it possible to create a light, compact and accurate weapon.

You look at the reviews of the Americans themselves. What place is it easy? And it kicks much harder than 308 caliber. There, in general, all experts agree that not everything is clean with the competition and SigZauer brought it to anyone

It's the reviews that I look at. Moreover, reviews of those who tested, and not couch experts. Lightweight - compared to 308s (5.56 mm, especially carbines - a completely different class). There is no "kicking" at all.

Yes, whatever they come up with.

Of the new small arms, machine guns of .338 caliber are of interest. They have the weight of a Pecheneg and the possibilities of a cliff. As for .277, they are not needed by themselves. All the same gives the mentioned Creedmoor and almost the same gives 7,62 NATO.

The main strength of NGSW is not pressure in the sleeve, but the connection of each infantryman to the information and combat systems of the US Army. Literally you press a button on the sight - and in a minute Excalibur flies to the aiming point. No one promises the appearance of something similar in the NWO zone yet.

These sights are good, but not for war, and not in green ...
In the city, for all sorts of special operations, especially killer ones (both for bandits and for special services), when you need to kill a target, quickly and without crushing civilians, this is useful ...
As for the cartridges, since the main increase in bullet power was due to the reinforced cartridge case and faster gunpowder, I have a question, but it was impossible to simply replace the cartridge cases in the 5,56 and 7,62 cartridges without changing the caliber? Or then the gunsmiths don’t need it, without ordering millions of arms and billions for cartridges?

Will not work. Modern bullets are very long, in the old caliber they displace gunpowder from the case. Therefore, if you want to keep the length of the chamber and the hitch, you need to reduce the caliber.

But of course, the improvement of cartridges is also underway. In particular, the reinforced .300 Win Mag actually devoured the once promising .338 LM.

Otherwise, it's still the same good old Kalashnikov assault rifle.

Strictly speaking, the gas outlet tube has become non-removable.
Perhaps the most modern and technologically advanced element of the NGSW program is the XM157 Fire Control sighting system, developed by Vortex.

We have been making similar devices for a long time by IWT. And not in the form of a complex device, but in the form of a nozzle on an existing sight. There is nothing particularly innovative in the device.
Characteristically, in fact, the main advantage of the .277 Fury cartridge is given by the steel base of the case, which allows it to hold more pressure than pure brass cases - a clear indicator of the influence of technological processes on the efficiency of the final product.

Let's see how the implementation goes. The use of a combined sleeve decently increases the cost of its production. And it raises a big question about its reuse, which also leads to an increase in the cost of the shot. Well, as it was correctly noted above, an increase in pressure in the chamber leads to an increase in barrel wear. And the gunners do not like to chrome the trunks. So let's wait and see.

And it’s not scary for the Americans to transfer such weapons to the dill, because they will sell it, how to give a drink?

And about the new caliber. Grandfather Fedorov more than a century ago, even before the revolution, substantiated and developed a 6.5 mm caliber cartridge and a self-loading cartridge for it, and after the revolution he participated in the creation of a unified system of small arms for his machine gun. But the USSR could not afford the transition to a new caliber, so all work on the creation of new rifle systems, except for the 7.62 mm caliber, was curtailed.

Possibility and consequences of delivery to Ukraine
    - there and so there is enough goodness like a fool candy wrappers. What prevents them from supplying already existing samples in small batches ?, besides, if they already want to supply to the army, then they have already run in.
"US Air Force" is like "US Air Force" if someone buys something, this does not mean that everything is.
"Specialists", for example, got hooked just the same on "Creedmore" and not 308.

Whether the local implementation of such a system is of great use, I don’t know. I think that on the scale of fairly large formations - regiments, brigades, and so on - the transition to a new cartridge and weapons for it is, first of all, extending the life of those units that are forced to fight for some time without a stable supply of ammunition, and hence a smaller fear of the environment, and the ability to advance further and longer. But it's probably too expensive.

Negev NG7 - this is what kind of weapon could be an alternative answer if it is too expensive to revive 6x49 and master its production from 0 in the conditions of NWO. Relatively speaking, it can be the most lightweight and ergonomic Pecheneg with a single shot mode. You can still fantasize in the direction of automation, compensating for recoil, like Abakan.

The rather ambiguous XM7 carbine was accepted by the Americans. Weighing 4.5 kg. under a powerful cartridge, instead of a light M4 submachine gun weighing 2.9 kg. It is better in the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq, but in the European theater of operations - not a fact. However, I won’t be surprised if the Americans leave the M4 as well - it is planned to rearm only shooters (107 thousand in the US Ground Forces), two different rifles will not ruin Uncle Sam, if sent to any theater of operations, the Army will have a choice. The same snipers have been using this for a long time.
    - the XM250 machine gun is better than the old M249 for everyone: lighter by a kilogram, lighter by 20% cartridges, better shot flatness, less recoil.

Speaking about the XM157 scope, no one mentioned one simple but convenient thing: a digital compass with angle indicators. A very convenient thing: the one who discovered the target does not have to explain for a long time where he saw it. It will be enough for a fighter who is nearby to name the direction in degrees. It's really convenient.

M-7 is not a carbine, but a full-fledged assault rifle. The barrel is shortened due to technology, not combat performance. And it weighs 3.8 kg - only 100 grams heavier than the M-16A2. But the M-4 is precisely the carbine - functionally analogous to the AKS-74U.
"It's better in the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq" - but in Europe no one will use body armor and shoot back?

Both our and American bulletproof vests more or less hold .308 / 7.62 * 54 even up close. .277, of course, will be more penetrating, but bulletproof vests do not stand still, and most of the body is not protected by anything.
In terms of mass, yes, the Marine HK 416 in .223 is almost the same as the XM7 weighs, but still the recoil of the .277 cartridge is much greater.

As far as I heard, back in the 1990s, ours carried out comparative tests of SVD and AK-74m with low-power optics in urban areas, when the group needed to move and hit emerging targets. In most cases, the AK turned out to be more convenient, as it was lighter, more reversible, less recoil made it possible to shoot from uncomfortable positions. It is clear that there are targets specifically for rifle caliber, but does everyone need to be Marksmen? The answer can only be given by practice.

The recoil of the M-7 is less than that of the SVD: according to testers, it allows you to conduct controlled automatic fire no worse than the M-16A2. I already wrote about the mass, and the agility - even with a silencer 2 cm shorter than the AK-74.

          1. -1
            11 July 2023 23: 56
The silencer weighs 700 grams and is a regular part of the weapon, it is not at all comfortable to shoot without it, due to the very high pressure and a very short barrel.
Gross weight with silencer, loaded magazine and XM157 sight 5.7 kg. With such a weight, and even with a DTK silencer, the return will be quite comfortable, but running with it is not easy.
If these rifles are sent to Ukraine, it will become clear how reliable and unpretentious they are with unskilled handling. Let's say, a machine gun, M240, as they say, "came in" there with problems, although it worked reliably for more qualified users for almost half a century

I have been waiting for a long time for this informational lead to crawl from the propagandists of the Western armies and their publics, including the Truba, to our Internet segment. The article is another glossy advertisement of some special forces from the inhabitants of the Svetlolikaya Strana.

at least one fit into the S-15 with its long barrel of one and a half installations. [/ quote]
How the Americans will carry their equipment does not interest me. They'll get out somehow. [/ Quote] Send children's excuses for the night. You obviously have a very distant idea about the word logistics. As well as about the work of the RDG, which will carry this coffin-shaped raw material on itself, which does not feed cartridges if the store is pushed harder into the mine.
Would there be something to see there? Dead cool guys from DevGRU in Kramatorsk who, all this did not help a bit? [/ Quote]
You are a little too optimistic. I understand your desire to see the work of the US MTR, but I consider such a prospect extremely unlikely. [/ Quote] Well, I saw what the USMC is capable of. I also saw airplanes with a neck on the keel from the Tonopah base. Unlike Monsieur balabol.
there is NO civilian GPS there (according to the control center of this gradan miracle, it can only fly to you), but there is NAVSTAR or European positioning (I don’t remember how its mark). Compass and? The Earth's axis has shifted over the past 10 years and there are magnetic anomalies! Rangefinder? During city fires from fighting, smoke, dust?
How scary to live.
The task of georeferencing the observed object is not difficult. There are more problems on the other hand - even for the Americans, with their exemplary interaction, calling for fire seems to require the decision of a senior officer. Let's see where the direction of thought goes there.
On the other hand, your usual star-pain is pumped up, as you say - blah blah. About battle.net: you decide there who is lying about the speed of the control center more, there are different glossy magazines or cue warriors.
Denial of harmful interfering factors, both CC and guidance? Therefore, Saint Javelina, she is such a crooked saint - here she is robe, there already - not robe. And then she completely screwed up ...

Americans in search of a miracle weapon in the rifle. Everyone remembers their XM-29 and XM-25 grenade launchers? And the search for a combat pistol? And now they are trying to return to the concept of the ancient M-14 at a new technological level.
Meanwhile, in small arms, as in no other, the matter rests not on the weapon, but on the psycho-physical characteristics of a person. Because different people - different weapons. For mediocre shooters - a weapon chambered for a small-caliber cartridge. The best shooters - under a rifle cartridge.

I wanted to write this myself. Either they returned to BAR & M1.

The most interesting thing is their sighting system, but I’m tired of writing to repeat, you yourself should take care of creating your own “sighting system” for a long time, it would be more correct to call it an automated sight and you don’t need to copy all sorts of XM157 Fire Control there, it’s large and rather primitive, should be done on the basis of a television camera to the near ultraviolet, it will be several times smaller in size, and see many times more than in a conventional optical sight (it’s like birds have smaller eyes in nature, but they see better) and under certain conditions for twilight it will be seen better even than in thermal imagers, (the night sky is full of ultraviolet) and of course there must be an image recognition function, machine vision, and the sight must initiate the cartridge itself, the person only holds the program start button to open fire, aims and waits for a shot.

    Quote from Avis
The recoil of the M-7 is less than that of the SVD: according to testers, it allows you to conduct controlled automatic fire no worse than the M-16A2. I already wrote about the mass, and the agility - even with a silencer 2 cm shorter than the AK-74.

What nonsense. Compare a cartridge with an energy comparable to 7,62NATO and M16A3, with a bunch of videos on the internet. What a hell.

The article helped me in orienting the gun. I admit that now I am just a witness. What I like is when guys who understand the issue, who filmed it and can judge it, take part in the discussion. Thanks for the discussion, gentlemen. I am very pleased with the article. am
