Hired orbital killer "Jackal" goes hunting: satellite inspector from a private American company True Anomaly

The fact that space is the most important factor in achieving victory in armed confrontation is no longer a secret to anyone. However, not everyone still imagines how great his influence will be, in fact there will be only two options: either you dominate in space or at least maintain parity in it, or you are just a target - an Indian tribe during the colonization of America.

Growth Factors

The key factor that ensures the colonization of outer space is the cost of launching a payload (PN) into orbit. Recently, there have been serious shifts in this direction in the form of the creation of fully reusable launch vehicles (LV). In the first place here is the American company SpaceX with its project of a super-heavy two-stage launch vehicle Starship, both stages of which are reusable. SpaceX has already made the first attempt to launch Starship, albeit unsuccessful so far, but they are not slowing down - in the coming months, we can expect the next attempt.

SpaceX Starship launch vehicle

A sharp decrease in the cost of launching a payload into orbit directs a huge number of private and state companies to develop promising means of space exploration in the interests of business and government agencies. For example, in the USA Capella Space launched its own constellation of radar reconnaissance satellites into orbit and sells high-resolution images of the earth's surface to everyone.

Sample satellite image from Capella Space

However, until now, all projects proposed by private companies have been conditionally peaceful - no, of course, almost any peaceful space project can be used or adapted for military needs, for example, Starlink communication satellites are actively used by our enemies in Ukraine, but still the declared main goals space startups were peaceful.

It looks like things are starting to change. The American company True Anomaly offers US defense structures inspector satellites of its own design. Rather, not even satellites, but something more - in fact, a comprehensive solution for tracking, tracking, intercepting data, and, if necessary, destroying enemy spacecraft.

The jackals smelled blood and money

“The peaceful use of space is essential for continued prosperity on Earth, from communications and finance to navigation and logistics. True Anomaly creates technologies at the intersection of spacecraft, software and artificial intelligence to empower the United States, its allies and commercial partners. We protect global security by ensuring space access and resilience for all.”

These are the goals stated on the True Anomaly website. True Anomaly CEO and co-founder Ewen Rogers, a former US Air Force major, is more specific:

"True Anomaly is revolutionizing space security with fully integrated technologies designed to protect the interests of the United States and its allies."

What does this mean in practice?

The basis of the concept developed by True Anomaly is maneuvering satellites / spacecraft (SC) Jackal ("Jackal"), capable of changing the orbit and flight path, approaching enemy spacecraft. Depending on the assigned task, the Jackal can examine a given enemy spacecraft, study it using sensors of various types and purposes. The means of reconnaissance of the spacecraft "Jackal" should include a radar station (RLS), multispectral cameras and other equipment.

Spacecraft "Jackal"

Presumably, the "Jackals" will be able to intercept information transmitted from the examined spacecraft, including control signals. And, of course, the very possibility of intensive maneuvering and rendezvous with given spacecraft provides for the possibility of their destruction with the help of a direct collision, that is, the Jackal spacecraft can be used as a kamikaze satellite.

Potentially, if positive results are achieved, the US military may purchase thousands of Jackal spacecraft.

"True Anomaly wants to be the US Space Force's favorite contractor."

However, this is not all that True Anomaly is going to offer the US Armed Forces.

The Jackal spacecraft should become part of the Mosaic integrated system, which provides information from the sensors of the Jackal spacecraft, processes it using artificial intelligence and presents it to operators in a visual graphical form. The software (software) of the "Mosaic" system from True Anomaly will allow not only to receive information from the "Jackal" spacecraft, to control them, but also to train operators, to simulate various scenarios for conducting operations in space.

Software interface of the Mosaic system by True Anomaly

“True Anomaly creates innovative technologies at the interface of spacecraft, software and artificial intelligence to provide solutions for space security, resilience and accessibility. The company enables the US government, its allies and partners, and the commercial space industry to conduct safe and sustainable operations in orbit to protect life on Earth.”

Some frames from True Anomaly's demo videos suggest the seriousness of the company's intentions, in particular, they show the flight path of the Jackal spacecraft passing beyond the orbit of the Moon. Perhaps this is an exaggeration, but it is possible that the Jackal spacecraft will be able to operate in orbits, up to geostationary.

Threats and Solutions

The problem of destroying the enemy spacecraft in space has been raised by the author more than once. For example, in the material "Knockin 'on Heaven" considered ways to destroy satellites using missiles launched from the surface or from air carriers - this method is suitable only for hitting a limited number of targets due to its high cost. The complexes considered in the material are much closer to the "Jackal" spacecraft "Orbital Cleaners", especially if we talk about commercial satellite projects for “debris removal from orbit” - in other words, let's not be hypocritical, the destruction of enemy spacecraft.

In conditions when Russian programs for the creation of reusable launch vehicles are in their infancy, asymmetric solutions are required that can ensure Russia, if not dominance, then at least parity in outer space.

A temporary solution, if not reducing the cost, then at least diversifying access to outer space, could be use of obsolete intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) to launch Russian spacecraft into orbit.

However, it can be assumed that the simplest and most effective solution could be creation and deployment of orbital interceptors of the "Reaper" type, designed for the sequential destruction of enemy spacecraft with guided and / or unguided munitions.

The concept of the orbital interceptor "Reaper"

It is possible that in the near future we will see who will dominate the orbit of our planet - the "Reapers" or the "Jackals".

I never believed and do not believe in all these fake agreements and statements about the peaceful exploration of outer space.
The United States wanted to sneeze at them, and this "Jackal" is another confirmation of this.
I hope our country will not find itself in the position of Indians who were shot with impunity by the colonizers of the Wild West.

An unpleasant prospect. But there is an option - the launch pads are rather big and very vulnerable, at least for now ....

Yes, and our space programs after the closure of the Buran project (at one time had some relation to it) have actually been marking time for the fourth decade and, apart from cutting money, they cannot boast of anything!

Well, yes, where can our "level" be to these high-tech "jackals" with tens of kilometers of delta that will fly to the geostationary station and back. Where is it actually harder to fly than to Mars?

The materials about such satellites never contain the main highlight, namely, the maneuvering capabilities of the satellites and the "power reserve".
That is, how many objects can be "inspected" by one such inspector. If there are two or more, then this is a very cost-effective project. But if the formula "one inspector - one goal", then everything is very costly and unprofitable.

take an interest in the question on the Konanykhin channel for details; in short: Russia has proven that it can not only inspect, but also shoot and attach, as well as reload the inspector. The author of this article, to put it mildly, is off topic and is wet.

There is another aspect to this news - the possibility of solving military problems in space with the help of private companies is allowed. On earth, this is a long-past stage - in order to avoid accusations of violating international law, and the responsibility of the state for it - the task is transferred to PMCs. Those. - if you can’t, but really want to, then you can through PMCs. This practice has shown its effectiveness - and now it should be expected in space. We are waiting for space "Wagners").

This is the only content of the article. I would even say this: swagger and recklessness have so overwhelmed modern American functionaries of drank structures that they are ready to risk money and offer. Given that the Russian Federation overtakes the States in the development of inspectors, the presentation of a jackal is a game to increase lawlessness. You can be sure that in public we will notice the results, but not only everyone will understand them. Because often white is often called black, often even winners.

This issue needs to be resolved jointly with the Chinese - they will obviously not be delighted with such an American initiative.

Here, the deep-sea submersible "Titan" died, which did not have any permits at all, the developers did not have licenses for the design and manufacture of the apparatus.
It seems that private space companies do not have licenses and permits either.
Who will be responsible for any accidents with the spacecraft? If there is an international treaty on responsibility for spacecraft launches from the national territory of a state? For the "SALUT" that fell in Chile, and for the satellite that fell in Canada, the USSR paid for the damage.
In principle, any private satellite that has not received permission to launch from government agencies should be destroyed. It may not necessarily be with a nuclear bomb, but for example with "Novichok" and will arrange a provocation. It is easier for us that intelligence is conducted by a private satellite and not a state one.
About state launches, information about them is exchanged between governments. Even North Korea is doing it.
Maybe it is already necessary to create an interethnic licensing committee, following the example of the River and Marine Register. soldier

A sharp decrease in the cost of launching a payload into orbit directs a huge number of private and state-owned companies to develop promising means of space exploration in the interests of business and government agencies.

This is a myth and nonsense. Launching an apparatus into space costs much less than the apparatus itself. If tomorrow they start launching into space for free at all, then this will make the final price by 20% less.

This will resemble an "epopee" from UAVs, new technologies with a new approach will give tangible advantages and for a long time. What to do? It's pointless to try to sit back and protest. bases with various satellites on board with both defense and attack systems. Accordingly, an attempt to attack or an attempt to cause damage is considered a declaration of war.

I don't know who will dominate the orbit, but definitely not us. Not with the money that we are allocated for space, with the sluggish demand that comes from the authorities and society on this topic from those to whom these funds are received. Our cosmic star has set, its last shines were in the late 80s.
The space of the 21st century has revealed all our sore points - both the weakening economy, and the corral in the field of our own production of entire areas of parts for dual-use spacecraft, and the dull management, and the backward bureaucracy, and the complete misunderstanding of the whole complex of how in the 21st century it is possible to lift huge, fierce grandmas and at the same time push his developments at this expense.

While here excited citizens come up with a solution to the problem more and more epic, like the devil is in the details, so here is the root of the problem in the plane of the economy. All these Ilona Masks and others like them know how to provide themselves with bread and butter, and yes, for them the state order is manna from heaven, but they CAN LIVE on pasture. And in our case, the sum of everything simply does not give developers options, only how to live on this very pasture. Immeasurably liquid, by the way. And I do not observe any progress in this conceptual trap. So, most likely, here our bear will deign to sleep again, until the thunder breaks out, the rain pours down and, as a result of this, the sky falls on his head.

All sorts of "Nudoli" is a magical thing, but the enemy's satellite constellation already exists in such quantities that to drive it with any kind of missiles from the ground is a game and a dead end. Here, probably, it is necessary to build objects with LO somewhere in the highlands, capable of taking out these spacecraft with a minimum consumption "on target". I don’t see any other budget solution, and, given the cost of throwing mass into orbit (and the need for this mass to somehow maneuver there to intercept), there probably isn’t one in the foreseeable future.

Of course, it would be an interesting idea to build a ground-based magnetic accelerator for military and civilian needs, but this is a much larger project and "gut thin".
Here someone relies on reusable rockets, seeing in this some kind of vanderwaffe - I do not recommend it categorically. The principle itself is good and even very good, but it still has no power over the laws of economics.
In order for our space to “get up off its knees”, we need a promising commercial portfolio comparable to that of the West (not only in space, but also for enterprises cooperating with it), only in this case we will be able to produce and launch non-homeopathic quantities. Here, too, I see no reason for optimism.
So LO in the highlands, compared with these problems, does not look like such a fantasy.

      .....to protect life on Earth......

Well, yes, we already know that! From Robert Sheckley's "Guardian Bird"! Or works about how to bomb the Earth from the Moon --- and Heinlein wrote about this, and Stanislav Lem (in the series about Iyon the Pacific), and Paul Anderson (in the novel "War of the Two Worlds"). And Paul Anderson's war between friendly civilizations --- Earth and Mars --- was provoked by a race of "werewolves" from the Sirius System, artificially created, capable of taking on any shape! They were refugees and wanted to clear the "living space"... Somehow this is very reminiscent of the current situation on our real Earth! Staffers are working on it.

If you try to use the term "grandmother" in relation to space, not orbital, namely, space projects, nothing good will come of it. Yes, under the conditions of using the capitalist model of the economy, which has long been outdated, obviously unsuitable for the progress of mankind, space, in the broadest sense of the word, is in principle unattainable.

The issue of protecting satellites and disabling inspector satellites of Western countries, as an option, can be sought in the use of special paints or special chemicals that can be used without destroying the object:
    A. When an enemy vehicle approaches our satellite
    b. If necessary, limit the technical capabilities of foreign satellites.
For example, it is worth recalling the example when an American spy drone “accidentally” fell into the air flow from the engine of our military aircraft. Back then, the engine exhaust was used, but this is difficult to do in space (though?). The use of special paints with the functions of blocking waves or blocking their video cameras is not a weapon and, accordingly, cannot be a reason for an incident.
