Submachine gun AK-12 arr. 2023
Sergey Urzhumtsev, chief designer of the Kalashnikov concern, demonstrates the updated AK-12/23
Russian units and formations involved in the current Special Operation are massively equipped with AK-12 assault rifles. About a year ago, a decision was made to improve this weapons taking into account the experience of its real combat use. To date, the Kalashnikov concern has carried out the necessary design work and tested the updated assault rifle. Now the product AK-12 arr. 2023 was presented to the press and the public for the first time.
In the process of modernization
Recall that the first version of the AK-12 was developed about ten years ago. During the tests, shortcomings appeared, due to which the project was radically redone in the middle of the decade. This version of the machine satisfied the customer, and in 2019 he began to enter the troops. Last year, units and subunits equipped with AK-12 went into battle.
As it became known later, already in March 2022, the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate, responsible for the development of small arms, began to study the experience of using the AK-12 as part of the Special Operation. The first proposals for improving this product were also prepared. It was reported that they mainly affect ergonomics.
General view of the AK-12 arr. 2023
In July, the general director of the Kalashnikov concern, Vladimir Lepin, announced the development of an updated project. An experienced machine gun with the necessary changes was presented to the Ministry of Defense.
At the end of February 2023, the chief designer of the concern Sergey Urzhumtsev spoke about the new successes of the project. A batch of modified AK-12s was made. She was sent to the zone of the Special Operation for verification in the conditions of hostilities. The concern was expecting feedback and evaluation of the fighters. Soon, in early March, the president of Kalashnikov, Alan Lushnikov, announced that mass production of the updated AK-12 would begin this year.
Official presentation
On May 26, in the Patriot Park near Moscow, the Kalashnikov Concern demonstrated a number of the latest developments in the field of small arms. In particular, the official presentation of the AK-12 assault rifle mod. 2023 or AK-12/23. The new machine was demonstrated to the press. The management of the developer organization revealed the main features of the project and current plans.
During the presentation, S. Urzhumtsev said that the AK-12 is now at the testing stage. This work will be completed by mid-June. Inspections are carried out under the control of the Ministry of Defense. The customer and the contractor check the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed innovations and ways to implement them. Then military trials will begin. For their implementation, the army will be given 100 machine guns.
Assault rifle with low-noise firing device and additional handle
According to A. Lushnikov, the concern is already preparing mass production of the updated AK-12. The first batch of weapons is planned to be produced in the second half of 2023. The size of the batch will correspond to the existing state order. At the same time, more precise dates and volumes have not been named.
Innovations and changes
Concern "Kalashnikov" has officially revealed the features of the modernization project AK-12/23. As previously reported, seven different improvements have been introduced. At the same time, individual parts were changed or replaced, while the main parts and principles of operation remained the same. Improvements were aimed at improving the combat and operational characteristics.
Taking into account the operating experience and combat use, the muzzle device was redesigned. From the muzzle brake-compensator with a bayonet mount abandoned. Instead, a slot-type flame arrester-compensator with a conical internal channel is now used, rigidly fixed to the barrel without the possibility of removal without a tool. The low-noise shooting device is installed directly on the flame arrester and is fixed with an eccentric.
A new forearm of a modified shape and design has been introduced, which better protects the shooter's hand from a heated barrel. The gas tube overlay above the forearm received a new mount: it is fixed rigidly at the back, and there is a transverse pin at the front.
Upgraded handguard and pad
The receiver has hardly changed. At the same time, the fastening of its cover was redesigned. The latter is now fixed not with a flag, but with a transverse pin. To remove the cover, the pin is simply squeezed out to the side.
Improved trigger mechanism. According to the experience of combat use, they abandoned the cut-off mode for two shots. Also finalized USM controls. On the right side of the receiver, the standard long flag of the fuse-translator has been preserved, but it is complemented by a short lever on the same axis. There is a similar lever on the left. New controls allow you to select the fire mode without removing your hand from the handle.
The standard diopter sight has been modernized. It was equipped with a flip-over whole with several holes of different diameters. By using different diopters, the shooter can maintain good visibility of the target in a wider range of illumination.
Due to the absence of radical changes, the dimensions and weight of the updated AK-12 generally remained at the level of its predecessor. The same applies to technical and combat characteristics. At the same time, however, a new sight, improved ergonomics, etc. should increase the efficiency of fire in practice.
Improved Fire Translator
At the request of the customer
Automatic AK-12 arr. 2023 has not yet passed the full test cycle, but the Kalashnikov concern looks to the future with optimism and is already preparing mass production. The management of the organization believes that the introduced innovations fully justify themselves and are necessary for modern weapons of the Russian army.
It is easy to see that the concern really has every reason for positive forecasts. It's about the origin of the new project. The terms of reference for the new upgrade were drawn up taking into account the operation of the machine in combat units, and also - more importantly - in the zone of real combat operations. The Ministry of Defense conducted the necessary analysis of the accumulated experience and compiled a list of required improvements.
A batch of automata improved according to this task underwent trial operation, during which wishes and complaints were again collected for further improvement of the project. Now the resulting AK-12/23 is undergoing the final stages of testing.
Thus, the terms of reference for the project arr. 2023 was actually formed in the combat zone based on real experience of use. One of the key stages of testing took place under the same conditions. Obviously, all this helped to form the most successful and perfect version of the appearance of the machine gun, which fully meets the current requirements of the troops.
A new type of sight
According to officials, in the coming weeks, the AK-12 mod. 2023 will complete the necessary tests. Already this year, mass production will start, due to which the re-equipment of parts will begin. In fact, the transition to an updated machine is now only a matter of time, and the very next.
Valuable experience
The Ministry of Defense and enterprises of the military-industrial complex are actively collecting data on the combat use of all types of weapons and equipment. The accumulated information and application experience are systematized and analyzed, after which projects for the modernization of various products appear.
Since last year, the Ministry of Defense and industry have been engaged in a similar update of one of the main models in the small arms system. To date, these works are nearing completion. And thanks to the well-established interaction of various organizations and departments, over the next few months, the army will receive an improved AK-12 mod. 2023
