Submachine gun AK-12 arr. 2023
Sergey Urzhumtsev, chief designer of the Kalashnikov concern, demonstrates the updated AK-12/23

Russian units and formations involved in the current Special Operation are massively equipped with AK-12 assault rifles. About a year ago, a decision was made to improve this weapons taking into account the experience of its real combat use. To date, the Kalashnikov concern has carried out the necessary design work and tested the updated assault rifle. Now the product AK-12 arr. 2023 was presented to the press and the public for the first time.

In the process of modernization

Recall that the first version of the AK-12 was developed about ten years ago. During the tests, shortcomings appeared, due to which the project was radically redone in the middle of the decade. This version of the machine satisfied the customer, and in 2019 he began to enter the troops. Last year, units and subunits equipped with AK-12 went into battle.

As it became known later, already in March 2022, the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate, responsible for the development of small arms, began to study the experience of using the AK-12 as part of the Special Operation. The first proposals for improving this product were also prepared. It was reported that they mainly affect ergonomics.

General view of the AK-12 arr. 2023

In July, the general director of the Kalashnikov concern, Vladimir Lepin, announced the development of an updated project. An experienced machine gun with the necessary changes was presented to the Ministry of Defense.

At the end of February 2023, the chief designer of the concern Sergey Urzhumtsev spoke about the new successes of the project. A batch of modified AK-12s was made. She was sent to the zone of the Special Operation for verification in the conditions of hostilities. The concern was expecting feedback and evaluation of the fighters. Soon, in early March, the president of Kalashnikov, Alan Lushnikov, announced that mass production of the updated AK-12 would begin this year.

Official presentation

On May 26, in the Patriot Park near Moscow, the Kalashnikov Concern demonstrated a number of the latest developments in the field of small arms. In particular, the official presentation of the AK-12 assault rifle mod. 2023 or AK-12/23. The new machine was demonstrated to the press. The management of the developer organization revealed the main features of the project and current plans.

During the presentation, S. Urzhumtsev said that the AK-12 is now at the testing stage. This work will be completed by mid-June. Inspections are carried out under the control of the Ministry of Defense. The customer and the contractor check the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed innovations and ways to implement them. Then military trials will begin. For their implementation, the army will be given 100 machine guns.

Assault rifle with low-noise firing device and additional handle

According to A. Lushnikov, the concern is already preparing mass production of the updated AK-12. The first batch of weapons is planned to be produced in the second half of 2023. The size of the batch will correspond to the existing state order. At the same time, more precise dates and volumes have not been named.

Innovations and changes

Concern "Kalashnikov" has officially revealed the features of the modernization project AK-12/23. As previously reported, seven different improvements have been introduced. At the same time, individual parts were changed or replaced, while the main parts and principles of operation remained the same. Improvements were aimed at improving the combat and operational characteristics.

Taking into account the operating experience and combat use, the muzzle device was redesigned. From the muzzle brake-compensator with a bayonet mount abandoned. Instead, a slot-type flame arrester-compensator with a conical internal channel is now used, rigidly fixed to the barrel without the possibility of removal without a tool. The low-noise shooting device is installed directly on the flame arrester and is fixed with an eccentric.

A new forearm of a modified shape and design has been introduced, which better protects the shooter's hand from a heated barrel. The gas tube overlay above the forearm received a new mount: it is fixed rigidly at the back, and there is a transverse pin at the front.

Upgraded handguard and pad

The receiver has hardly changed. At the same time, the fastening of its cover was redesigned. The latter is now fixed not with a flag, but with a transverse pin. To remove the cover, the pin is simply squeezed out to the side.

Improved trigger mechanism. According to the experience of combat use, they abandoned the cut-off mode for two shots. Also finalized USM controls. On the right side of the receiver, the standard long flag of the fuse-translator has been preserved, but it is complemented by a short lever on the same axis. There is a similar lever on the left. New controls allow you to select the fire mode without removing your hand from the handle.

The standard diopter sight has been modernized. It was equipped with a flip-over whole with several holes of different diameters. By using different diopters, the shooter can maintain good visibility of the target in a wider range of illumination.

Due to the absence of radical changes, the dimensions and weight of the updated AK-12 generally remained at the level of its predecessor. The same applies to technical and combat characteristics. At the same time, however, a new sight, improved ergonomics, etc. should increase the efficiency of fire in practice.

Improved Fire Translator

At the request of the customer

Automatic AK-12 arr. 2023 has not yet passed the full test cycle, but the Kalashnikov concern looks to the future with optimism and is already preparing mass production. The management of the organization believes that the introduced innovations fully justify themselves and are necessary for modern weapons of the Russian army.

It is easy to see that the concern really has every reason for positive forecasts. It's about the origin of the new project. The terms of reference for the new upgrade were drawn up taking into account the operation of the machine in combat units, and also - more importantly - in the zone of real combat operations. The Ministry of Defense conducted the necessary analysis of the accumulated experience and compiled a list of required improvements.

A batch of automata improved according to this task underwent trial operation, during which wishes and complaints were again collected for further improvement of the project. Now the resulting AK-12/23 is undergoing the final stages of testing.

Thus, the terms of reference for the project arr. 2023 was actually formed in the combat zone based on real experience of use. One of the key stages of testing took place under the same conditions. Obviously, all this helped to form the most successful and perfect version of the appearance of the machine gun, which fully meets the current requirements of the troops.

A new type of sight

According to officials, in the coming weeks, the AK-12 mod. 2023 will complete the necessary tests. Already this year, mass production will start, due to which the re-equipment of parts will begin. In fact, the transition to an updated machine is now only a matter of time, and the very next.

Valuable experience

The Ministry of Defense and enterprises of the military-industrial complex are actively collecting data on the combat use of all types of weapons and equipment. The accumulated information and application experience are systematized and analyzed, after which projects for the modernization of various products appear.

Since last year, the Ministry of Defense and industry have been engaged in a similar update of one of the main models in the small arms system. To date, these works are nearing completion. And thanks to the well-established interaction of various organizations and departments, over the next few months, the army will receive an improved AK-12 mod. 2023

It seems to have worked out well. I'm not an expert, but it seems to me that the soldiers will like this version more than the previous ones.

Stay, yes. But it is much more convenient to use an ergonomic ax than a blunt piece of iron on a straight cylindrical stick. I wish only high-quality plastic for the parts of the new machine)

      It seems to be

      Exactly!
The main drawback of the AK system - the location of the center of mass of the bolt frame above and to the side of the axis of the bore, and above the "support spot" of the butt, has not gone away.
That is, this is the same machine gun of 1947, just in a different caliber and slightly modified design.
It would be important to remove the CG of the moving part to the axis of the barrel, and to the center of the butt.

in this case, you need to change the entire layout of the receiver. And this is a fundamentally different product, a different design solution. Like Y. Stone, breaking to open the receiver. The same principle applies to the fitting. Then one line of the bolt frame and butt is obtained. And if you look at SVT and SVD, then there is no such large piston as on AK. There is a small pusher piston. And all this is a small mass, which does not give an imbalance to the moment of inertia. It turns out that you need to invent new weapons.

It hurts me to watch people suffer.
All these pseudo-design "attempts", tricks and perversions ...
And all this in the end, in order to "mow under the west."
The handle - under the western type, the sight moved back, the diopter, which will clog with mud - some kind of "cheap show-off"!
It seems that they are "stupidly sawing loot" - there is nowhere else to put the money!

Over the past seven years (!) I have written to the Kalashnikov Concern four times to make a prototype of my pistol with radial guides, capable of surpassing ALL classic pistols and bringing out the Russian short barrel number one in the world! (for those who are interested - see my articles in my account)

And only in the last Conclusion they acknowledged that "in this scheme there are indeed a number of positive aspects." But! ... The concern introduces other models of pistols ... Which are already yesterday! There are no opportunities for new promising developments "for the glory of Russian weapons"!
Although, in fairness, I note - Ch. designer Izhmekha Kalugin A.I. figured out the idea and tried to proactively "drag" this topic ... Alas, to no avail!
(Now I am finishing a new article with additional justifications for this concept. It will be out soon, I hope.)

Actually, they work according to the customer's requirements, i.e. MO.
Recently I watched an interview with one of those involved in the AK-12 and most of the answers to the criticized nodes: "these are the TOR of the Ministry of Defense for this node, we offered something else."

I've heard that for every bad decision. In fact, the developer himself writes the TOR for what he "designed", and then pushes it into the GRAU, imposing his decisions also on his potential competitors. Previously, the TK was developed by the GRAU.

Many fighters like the handle, they don’t like it, they take it off, what problems. The rear location of the sight is a long, convenient aiming line. The diopter is in the mud, hmm, you need to keep the weapon clean, what kind of weapon will be, so you will conduct a war.
More like inappropriate nit-picking about a generally good gun.

For example, I need a smooth forearm for a tight grip, and not this comb, I don’t understand why, ahh ... I know for the accumulation of clay, like a diopter. Also a smooth buttstock, not this export misunderstanding, designed for American shooters in the shooting range, as well as a fuse on both sides. Hockey release for both left-handed and right-handed, what is the problem to do so and vice versa. Do we really have the same large percentage of left-handers as the Anglo-Saxons.

About dirt, my opinion is unchanged, my guns at work are always clean, best friends should be loved and respected.
There are not so many left-handers, but there are. And personally, I do not see a problem in a two-way pr.
And the strictly positive moment is that the useless cut-off and the corresponding recomplication of the USM have been removed.

A policeman, according to the rules of the Russian language, is an ADJECTIVE, and cannot designate an official in any way. The police are a policeman, and if the police are a policeman, so your correction is for illiteracy. In tsarist Russia it was easier. The police are the gendarmes, the gendarme, the police CHIN. And now in Russia the word POLICEMAN means a malicious misunderstanding, guarding the interests of bloodsuckers.

I did not find a police officer in the NSI reference book "Professions and positions of employees", but there is a whole bunch of "On duty" - and "on duty" is an adjective, that is, your first thesis is bullshit. But in the reference book of the NSI "All-Russian classifier of occupations" there is an entry "Police" under the code 5412.
In general, your comment, especially the last thesis, betrays a liberal or, God forgive me, a bulky one.

Does the word FIREMAN mean anything to you?

Moscow, admiring its famous fire train - first on handsome horses, matched by color, and then silent cars, sparkling copper helmets - proudly said:
                        Firefighters!
                        And suddenly:- Firefighters!
                        Something small, wretched, insulting.
In Moscow, for a long time, this word was running, but it had a completely different meaning: this was the name of a special kind of beggars who came to Moscow for the winter season along with their masters, owners of rich estates. This was done under the guise of gathering for "burnt" places. Fire victims, real and fake, came and came to Moscow with their families. Women with children rode in sleighs to collect alms in money and junk, presenting certificates with an official seal stating that the bearers of this were going to collect donations in favor of a burnt village or village. Some of them bought special sleds, with burnt ends of the shafts, assuring that they were only sleds and managed to pull out of the fire.

Rear sight - long, comfortable aiming line

Not always. If you're shooting from a steady position with no fuss - yes, the longer the line the better. But if you need to quickly move the aiming point and over short distances, for example, in urban combat - on the contrary .. It’s not for nothing that many generally put a collimator instead of a rear sight, and special perverts even put it on a gas outlet ..

Not one, I repeat, not a single shooter, in his right mind and sober memory. Will not take the barrel, which constantly loses sight. The frame then jumps to the top, a la Luger. With the lowering of the trunk, below the fulcrum, they played back in the 70s and 80s. In pistols for high-speed Olympic shooting. Athletes, Olympians spat. It is one thing to control the toss, another thing is not to control the behavior of the trunk. About 12 Kalash. What I did not pay attention to, not one "expert". One piece gas block tube. Barrel attachment at two points. Also it is not necessary here for console fishing rods to tell. The vibration of the barrel, no one has canceled. Mounting the barrel with a console, closer to the muzzle, sharply suddenly, is used in semi-automatic sniper rifles, under 308w. And under 6.5 grendel. The people ate "cantilevered trunks. And they use a posted forearm. Plus, they abandoned all sorts of" sports "gags. Like quick release and other heresy. If you are in a trench or assault, you dropped the store. You are without a store.

Radial shutter has a place to be unconditionally. But this pistol is such a thing, especially an army one, that it seems to be needed, but it seems to be all the same ... As a result, back in the early 90s, they decided that something more modern than the PM was needed ... A lot of competitions, a lot of not bad pistols, starting from PMM, and OTs-27, ending with SPS and GSh. And these are all good pistols, greatly surpassing the PM in terms of capabilities, even the same PMM, with a more powerful and, most importantly, low-recocheting cartridge, is not bad ... But for 20 years nothing at all, then they ate and ate accepted the PY, even set up a series, of course, how the order went , then it became interesting to finish it, finish it. In principle, it turned out not a bad gun.
But damn it, it was put into service 20 years ago, to hell with it, it was finished off for 5-7 years, but anyway it has been in service for 12-15 years and has not completely replaced the PM. Although Kalashnikov’s production capacity is huge, in 5 years they could replace all pistols and stock up army warehouses in case of mobilization ... But they didn’t replace it. Why? Yes, because in the army a gun is not really needed. And a small PM, in principle, suits everyone if it just has to hang on a belt, and not shoot ...
Therefore, an innovative pistol like an army one is of no interest to anyone ...
You need to go in not like with a military pistol, but like with a sports pistol, with recommendations from reputable shooters. Well, preferably not for Kalashnikovs, who are not interested in a small-scale product, and it’s overwhelmed with orders, but Tula or Podolsk, or in general for private enthusiasts with good equipment - bespok Hans, Orsis, Lobaev Arms ... They are somehow connected with athletes - shooters and there is a chance that they will at least undertake to make a trial batch for fine-tuning and testing ...
Kalashnikov understands that this is not interesting, they rivet hundreds of thousands of machine guns, and here is the concept of a pistol that will have to be brought to mind, and which most likely will not be ordered ...

The grandmas are stupidly sawing, the sight will be clogged with mud, the handle is as in the kit or buy, why these straps, there is still no collimator in the troops, unless of course the fighter bought at his own expense or the volunteers did not give him a gift, otherwise you can ask how much this creation costs different from the AK-74M, it may be better to buy the AEK-971 already.

AEK is no better. No need to enthusiastically delve into varieties of shit. In the aggregate of all characteristics, even the AK-12/200 is preferable to AEK. And AK74M is preferable to AK-12/200 ...
And not by AEK "balancers" have long been called, but A545 and A762.

New machine guns for the army are like new saddles for a tank regiment. Modern warfare requires a completely different thing, and ordinary Kalash will cope with the tasks of small arms combat.

Kovrov AEK and its variants are many times better than Kalash, but everything is bought and you can’t break through with the best, our country is like that, it would be nice if the war would fix everything, it would turn all this filthy swamp, demolish all this bought and greased!

I really want to believe that the military will like this version of the AK-12 (mainly because, unfortunately, 100% does not happen!) good Changes, really necessary and convenient! I would also like to see an incomplete assembly-dismantling of this version of the AK-12! hi Good luck to the designers!

The latter is now fixed not with a flag, but with a transverse pin. To remove the cover, the pin is simply squeezed out to the side.
Well, what the hell? To make it harder to disassemble, and the pins were lost?
According to the experience of combat use, they abandoned the cut-off mode for two shots.
    Ak-74M: "Hello again!"
The standard diopter sight has been modernized.
You need a collimator and (at least) a 4x fix (3-8 is better, but it's really expensive) in one sight. And not on a removable receiver, but hard. Yes, it's expensive, fragile, but necessary: the mobilized have no time to develop skills. And if you add a laser pointer there, then it will be good in general.

AEK is beautiful, no doubt, but there are several but: 1 it is more complicated than Kalash; 2, it is most likely more expensive than the AK12, because 3 Kovrovites are unlikely to pull large-scale production !!! Well, it’s quite rude, to the trench Vasya, especially if he is called up from the reserve, one horseradish will be handed over to the 74th, because there are a lot of them in warehouses. But AEK would, even in small batches, but to intelligence and specialists!

I am 65 years old, in the reserve, I can't get enough of it. For more than 20 years of service, almost every day I dealt with AKM and then with AK74. So MY opinion is this: on the AK74, a dovetail collimator is enough. Yes, it will become a little harder, then the screams will begin, saying that with every kilometer of the march, every gram, contrary to physics, will become harder. It's all nonsense. When there were no collimators, they set up a sight from the RPG-7, and hit the adversary just fine. I would never take an AK12 and never will. Trusting your life to a marketing miscarriage is beyond.

You may disagree, but I do not believe the Kalashnikov concern. Here, too, they are talking about the "mass use" of the AK-12, but in the frames with the SVO, the standard 74 is most often flashed, which I also had. And often she also looks shabby to the point of impossibility.

We are waiting for AK-12 Pro, AK-12 Pro Plus. Even to me, a civilian already, these movements with a gun seem nothing more than a drink of money. A bunch of non-removable incomprehensible guides, a sight that has never been used in Russia, a controversial decision on the fire control handle, and a lot of things. Against this background, the AKS-74 looks like a workhorse, simple and reliable.

You can see the work done by the designers, it’s good that such machine guns are being made, but in the comments, as usual, a herd of witnesses of sawing, corruption and sand gathered, in which all the bars will be erased, the sights will clog and they don’t exist at all, but you need to fight with Sudayev’s submachine gun and in tarpaulin boots.

Yeah, I don’t remember such an epic failure as with the AK-12.
Nothing works with the AK 12 (in 12 years of development. I'm just freaking out, dear editors), and it won't work. If the problem is set correctly, it can be solved (or not solved), but if the problem is initially set incorrectly, then it cannot be solved.
You need to start with understanding what you want to get. And you need to get the accuracy of fire in automatic mode, corresponding to the initial technical specifications for AKs (they cannot fulfill 75 years).
Therefore, you need to start with TK.

    New TK for AK
    Cartridge - 5,45x39 mm.
Rate of fire - 300-350 rds / min (with such a rate of fire, the shooter manages to return the barrel to the aiming line.)
Shooting in automatic mode - from the rear sear.
    Single shooting mode - absent.
    Trigger force - 1,2-1,8 kg.
The barrel is a polygonal rifling that can withstand 300 shots in continuous fire mode with a quick magazine change (10 magazines). At the same time, it is allowed to leave the STP by no more than 20 cm per 100 m and increase R 100% of hits - 40 cm per 100 m.
The barrel is heavy, the diameter is at least 25 mm at the muzzle. Trunk with horizontal grooves.
Bolt - engages with the barrel.
Barrel length - let it remain the same 415 mm.
The muzzle toss compensator is of the AKM type. (The compensator from the AK 74 raises dust and snow when fired. It creates a painful effect on the ears.)
The rifling pitch is 170 mm, not 200 mm, like yours.
The layout is linear (no recoil shoulder), according to the M-16 type.
The upper receiver is solid (according to the PPSh / PPS type).
Optics - built-in (close to "PILAD P3,5x20"), reliably protected from impacts by the body of the machine and rubber pads.
Auxiliary sight - diopter (three holes, 200 m, 400 m, night), closed from above from water leakage and snow.
Automation - balanced or shockless in the rear position of the bolt due to the rollback of the bolt group into the butt cavity.
    The example is awkward.
    Bipod - built-in.
Weight with a magazine without cartridges - 4,5-5,5 kg. An intermediate cartridge requires a certain mass of the weapon.
    Shop - from AK-74.
    The barrel must be nitrocarbonated.
Barrel resource - not less than 50 thousand shots (in the mode of 300 continuous shots with subsequent cooling).
Picatinny rails are not needed, it is enough to make the landing size for the built-in optical sight. I unscrewed the screws, removed the optical sight, put a transition bar on the existing landing screws and put another sight, for example, a thermal imaging one. (These actions will be rare).

What would I add as a hunter for 25 years and a military man for 10 years: a weighted barrel can be with lamellas for cooling like on the Vepr-Pioneer, the fore-end is lengthened and the area under the palm is expanded without any straps for the convenience of shooting and without any handles, they only interfere, they are needed there upper and lower Picatinny rails for a collimator or night attachments and a target designator.
And it’s high time to do automation on an inertial shutter, 1 kg of weight would be easier! And patron Grendel it's time! And it would be a really new machine! soldier

The muzzle brake-compensator with a bayonet mount was abandoned. Instead, a slot-type flame arrester-compensator with a conical internal channel is now used, rigidly mounted on the barrel without the possibility of removal without tools.

With this new flame arrester and compensator, the length of the AK is almost the same as that of the SVD, how can you get in and out of an infantry fighting vehicle or armored personnel carrier with it, and tie it on board?
How to move with this “shaft” in forest plantations or in a narrow trench?

The low-noise and flameless firing device needs to be integrated onto the barrel, as is done on the VSS, then the AK will again become a convenient and mobile weapon for the infantryman, and not a “device for fishing.”...
