The Russian automotive industry does not often please with new products, especially since February 22 last year. unexpectedly pleasant news they came from where they did not expect - from the Almaz-Antey defense concern. Under the traditionally difficult to pronounce index S36A11, a prototype heavy truck BAZ debuted. The name of the novelty indicates the Bryansk Automobile Plant, but the truck has a very indirect relationship to the enterprise.
The development was carried out by a specialized engineering center of the Obukhov plant in St. Petersburg. Until recently, the enterprise had nothing to do with the automotive industry - in the production line there are exclusively command posts for missilemen. Nevertheless, it was this division of Almaz-Antey that was assigned the automotive theme. And long before the special operation.
In January last year, the E-Neva electric car was rolled out to the general public, in the development of which specialists from the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University took part. The chassis and power plant were built at the Obukhov plant. The machine turned out to be elite - the power of two electric motors is an impressive 435 hp. with., and the interior is crammed with advanced multimedia. For example, there is a trendy projection display. Even before the events of the special operation, the cost of an electric car went far beyond three, or even five million rubles. At the same time, most of the components are imported. The project has not yet been officially closed, and it managed to have a competitor.
In Naberezhnye Chelny, at the beginning of May 2023, a compact electric car Atom was shown. The machine is made much more modest than the St. Petersburg counterpart, but even here we can talk about the Russian origin of the components very conditionally - the traction battery and electric motors are imported. And they are far from the only ones in the design. Developers from the Kama company claim that the car will go into production in the next couple of years.

One can argue about the prospects of electric vehicles in Russia, including those produced by Almaz-Antey, for a long time. The future of the BAZ-S36A11 heavy truck, made with virtually no imported parts, looks much more real. The design is based on a solid frame and independent suspensions of the military four-axle BAZ-6909 Voshchina-1. The latter is well known in the army and mastered in production.
"Voshchina", which is classified as a "special wheeled chassis", in various versions works as a tank carrier, transporter of various weapons and a simple ballast tractor. Axles adapted for a civilian truck can withstand up to 12 tons. The BAZ-S36A11 diesel engine is domestic YaMZ-6531 with a capacity of 422 hp. With. This most powerful in the line of 6-cylinder engines from Yaroslavl is a licensed copy of the French Renault dCi 11. Unfortunately, the designers could not find a torque converter corresponding to the class of equipment, and the BAZ-S36A11 is content with the YaMZ-1909 manual gearbox. The nine-speed unit is capable of digesting up to 1900 Nm, which is almost twice as much as the proposed power plant. The unit is equipped with a lowering row, as well as the possibility of power take-off, which increases the versatility of the machine.
At the Obukhov plant, they were able to quickly develop a frame-panel cabin with fiberglass outer panels. This design significantly complicates the conveyor production of the truck, but it is still a noticeable, even phenomenal achievement for the Russian automotive industry. Just look at the Kama Automobile Plant, which for all the time has not been able to create a new truck cab. I had to borrow the Mercedes, and the old one is still being produced.
Civil tank carrier
As mentioned above, the BAZ-S36A11 is a heavy all-wheel drive truck designed to replace imported vehicles that have fallen out of the Russian market. First of all, the most extreme versions of MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Scania and Volvo. Moreover, the emphasis is not on carrying capacity - for the Russian novelty it barely exceeds 22 tons, but on high cross-country ability and endurance.

The authors of the project say that the truck is intended for the domestic oil sector, hence the adaptation to climatic conditions. The spacious sleeper cab has climate control and an autonomous heater. Both units are Russian-made. We must pay tribute to the managers of Almaz-Antey - the car appeared just in time. Firstly, none of the Russian automakers has offered or plans to offer a truck of this class. KamAZ-65221, which is similar in purpose, does not reach 29 tons with a gross weight, while at BAZ the same figure reaches 35,7 tons. And the bridges at KamAZ are not designed for similar loads.
Secondly, truck factories in Russia are now loaded to capacity. Everyone is well aware of what orders. For example, only Miass "Ural" still cannot recruit production staff. We have to negotiate with the Federal Penitentiary Service and bring local prisoners serving sentences under light articles to the assembly line. Due to the high pace of production, the Bryansk Automobile Plant itself is also experiencing difficulties with personnel - since November last year, free training for residents of Bryansk with subsequent employment has been announced. As a result, there was no one to develop and build a heavy class all-wheel drive truck. Where, then, will they produce a new product, if all the capacities in the country are reserved?
In early May, the Almaz-Antey Corporation handed over the idle Toyota plant in Shushary near St. Petersburg. The management immediately transferred the asset to the Obukhov plant for the production of BAZ-S36A11. That's how the manufacturer of the best air defense in the world suddenly became the owner of the automobile business. Most likely, in the hands of the corporation will be the production of a full cycle. And finally, the third reason why the new car is so timely is the Chinese. Automakers from China feel very comfortable not only in the passenger car market (here, to be honest, Russian factories have nothing to cover the threat with), but also in the truck segment. At the end of February, Avtostat published stunning statistics, according to which Chinese cars own 60 percent of the truck market. KamAZ seriously intends to ask for protective duties from the eastern giant. There was a paradox of the transfer of Russian industry to a war footing - trucking automobile plants work 24/7, but the share in the civilian sector goes to Chinese companies. And without the initiative of the Obukhov plant, the niche of heavy "rogues" would have left SITRAK, Shacman / Shaanxi, FAW and Howo.

If you look closely at the BAZ-S36A11, one more path of the car will become clear - a multi-purpose army truck. A sort of substitute for the Soviet KrAZ, standing one step below the traditional products of the Bryansk Automobile Plant. From a car with such a wheel arrangement and considerable thrust-to-weight ratio, an excellent tank tractor. Recall that in Russia it was not possible to create a satisfactory tank transporter. Kamaz's "Platform-O" has not got rid of its overly innovative sores, and the four-axle bonneted Ural-6308 is too complicated and expensive to manufacture. The BAZ has an independent suspension of all wheels, which will significantly increase the mobility of the road train in a special operation. Now Russian tanks are transported in the NVO zone on three vehicles - the heavy and expensive BAZ-6403.01, the three-axle and all-wheel drive KamAZ-65221 and the highway KamAZ-65225. The recipe is simple - to deploy the mass production of the new BAZ at the facilities of the departed Toyota, and to free the rest of the plants from the topic of tank carriers. But even without a saddle for a trawl, the BAZ-S36A11 has a lot of work in the army. With such a suspension, “heavy” axles and power, the car is welcome everywhere. It is only necessary to solve the problem with the fiberglass cabin - this solution from the word does not suit the military at all. And one more thing - it is better to tie Almaz-Antey with electric vehicles. It's not good at a time like this.
