First results: development of Russian loitering munitions

Over the past few years, the Russian army has received a number of types of attack unmanned aerial vehicles that hit the target with a direct hit. Created, mass-produced and used loitering ammunition and Drones-kamikaze of different classes and weight categories with sharply different characteristics. At the same time, all of them find application in practice and confirm the design characteristics.

Late start

The modern concept of loitering ammunition (BB) was formed and first implemented in Israel in the eighties and nineties. At the same time, detailed information about such developments came abroad only a few years later. During this period, for well-known reasons, the Russian industry could not pay due attention to the entire direction of unmanned aviation, and therefore similar developments were not yet available.

At the beginning of the XXI century. the situation has changed, and active development of UAVs of various classes has begun in our country to solve various problems. At the same time, simpler and more relevant projects received priority. The BB concept was only considered in theory, and its implementation was postponed to an indefinite future.

The full-scale development of the new direction began in the mid-XNUMXs. Over the next few years, Russian enterprises introduced a number of kamikaze drones with different characteristics and functions. In the future, these products have undergone modernization, and new samples have appeared.

According to known data, all or almost all of the presented and adopted APs since 2022 have been used in the course of the Special Operation to Protect Donbass. In addition, last fall there was a loud “premier” in every sense of the new model, which is noticeably different from other UAVs. It cannot be ruled out that new types of ammunition will soon enter service and go to the combat zone.

First of its kind

The first domestic BB that got to open events and became widely known was the Kub-UAV product from Zala Aero (part of the Kalashnikov Concern). This UAV was developed and tested in 2018. Shortly after that, it began to be demonstrated at domestic and foreign exhibitions. At the turn of the decade, "Kub-BLA" went into series and got into the army.

The kamikaze UAV is built according to the “flying wing” scheme with a pronounced cylindrical fuselage. Wingspan exceeds 1,2 m, length - 950 mm. The product weighs several kilograms and carries a 3-kg warhead. Applied electric power plant with a pusher propeller. Takeoff is carried out from a catapult. In the original version, the Kub-UAV had an autopilot with guidance based on satellite navigation data. The device can remain in the air for up to half an hour and overcome at least 60-70 km.

UAVs of this type were tested in combat as part of the Syrian operation. Since last year, they have been used in the Special Operations in Ukraine. Apparently, the "Cube-UAV" is used infrequently - due to the limited characteristics, the specifics of guidance and the availability of more convenient alternatives. However, this UAV has already taken its place in stories domestic unmanned aircraft.

It should be noted that the "Kub-UAV" in its original configuration does not fully correspond to the modern understanding of the term "loitering ammunition". This UAV is guided only by coordinates, and therefore cannot stay in the air for a long time and wait for the target to appear for a subsequent attack. From the point of view of combat capabilities, the Kub-BLA is a kind of cruise missile, which differs from other samples of this class in its greater simplicity and lower cost.

shock series

Based on the experience of previous projects, Zala Aero developed the next BB, called the Lancet. Tests of this UAV began in the summer of 2019, and soon it was shown to the public. At that time, two modifications of the apparatus, Lancet-1 and Lancet-3, were proposed, differing in size, characteristics and combat capabilities.

Both versions of the Lancet were built according to a special aerodynamic scheme and have two X-shaped sets of planes on an elongated fuselage. In both cases, an electric propulsion system with a pusher propeller is used. In the forward part of the fuselage there is a mobile optical-electronic station used for reconnaissance, target search and guidance. The product "Lancet-1" has a mass of 5 kg and carries a 1-kg warhead. The larger "Lancet-3" with a mass of 12 kg has a load of 3 kg. The flight range is at least 40 and 70 km, respectively.

Like the Cube, the Lancets were first used against real targets in Syria. Last year, they began to be used on Ukrainian facilities and equipment. Video materials appear regularly showing the process and result of the work of the Lancets. In addition, this drone has recently been upgraded based on operating experience. According to known data, the electronics were improved and the charge of the warhead was increased.

On a large scale

In October 2022, it became known that the Russian army has another kamikaze drone. In massive strikes against Ukrainian targets, the previously unknown Geran-2 UAVs began to be used. This product is fundamentally different from previous domestic BBs, although it has some similarities with one of them.

Accurate information about the origin of "Geranium-2" is not yet available. According to some sources, this is a domestic development based on available components, while other sources consider this UAV to be a licensed copy of the Iranian Shahed-136 product. At the same time, it is reported that mass production of attack drones has been established at one of the Russian enterprises.

Outwardly and in its design, the Geran-2 UAV is similar to the light Kub-UAV. The "flying wing" scheme is used without a smooth interface of surfaces. Wingspan reaches 2,5 m, length - at least 3 m. Take-off weight - approx. 200 kg. The device is equipped with a piston engine with a pusher propeller. The flight speed is limited to 170-180 km / h, however, low fuel consumption allows you to get a range of up to 2-2,5 thousand km. "Geran-2" is aimed at a target with known coordinates using an autopilot with inertial and satellite navigation. A high-explosive warhead weighing 50 kg is used.

UAV "Geran-2" is distinguished by a certain simplicity of design, which allows mass production and use of it. These products are regularly used in large quantities to strike at Ukrainian targets and have long earned a good reputation.

As in the case of the Cube-UAV, the Geran-2 product is intended for a simple flight to a target with given coordinates and cannot be on duty in the air, waiting for an object to attack. From this point of view, Geran-2 is a surface-to-surface guided munition - an analogue of cruise missiles with its own specific advantages.

Big results

Thus, in just the past few years, the Russian industry has taken the necessary measures and developed several loitering ammunition with different capabilities at once. This gave our army new opportunities, and also allowed us to close the gap with foreign countries. In addition, in some cases, we can talk about the superiority of new domestic technology.

"Geranium-2" over Ukraine. Photo AFP

It is curious that with the help of just a few new designs, Russian industry and the army were able to close several important niches at once. So, the light "Cubes" and "Lancets" entered the ground units and expanded their capabilities to search for and destroy enemy objects, weapons and equipment. In addition, the army received a new long-range attack weapon in the form of Geranium, which can effectively supplement full-fledged air- or sea-based cruise missiles.

It is noteworthy that not only large enterprises are engaged in the topic of BB. Various small firms and organizations create their own versions of such equipment. Light class UAVs are rebuilt into ammunition or they are completely assembled from available components. Such equipment is not officially accepted for service, but also contributes to the overall results. Light kamikaze drones occupy a niche of short-range means, for which the Cube-UAV or Lancet-1 are redundant and / or too expensive.

High performance and efficiency of new domestic warheads and kamikaze drones are regularly demonstrated in the area of the Special Operation. At the same time, serial products of several types are used in parallel with other weapons, incl. to solve common problems - depending on the situation, goals, etc.

Loitering munitions have proven themselves well and there is no doubt that this area of unmanned aircraft will be further developed. New samples of this class can already be developed and even tested at test sites. The assembly of handicraft equipment does not stop either. Accordingly, kamikaze drones will no longer disappear from the combat zone, and their role may even grow.

It would be nice to see the work of barrage UAVs on the Ukronazi infantry.
Yesterday I watched how two Ukronats were finishing off our wounded in the trenches ... for such cases, an ambulance is needed in the form of support for loitering UAVs with anti-personnel shrapnel.

The meaning of these loitering UAVs is initially to suppress the main air defense with a massive first strike / strikes. To clear the sky for the Air Force. Air superiority is needed to break through the enemy's defense by ground units and his environment, etc. In a positional war, such loitering UAVs are a problem for the warring parties, but apart from the main task, they do not even provide tactical superiority.

The meaning is not just in hitting, but in hitting specific targets. And for this we need a system of mass detection of targets over enemy territory

There is a video "in the open", where a quadric with a warhead was dropped by a special stoner. Of course they picked it. But they didn't play for long.

Or at least FPV drones with changing warheads.

Gliding bombs do the same thing, trading height and speed for distance.
I would like development in this area in terms of improving the aerodynamic quality and doubling the range.
This would immediately enhance the role of aviation. And she could come to replace the retiring artillery.

what we see in the cart or somewhere else: it’s not as many defeats / damage to equipment as we would like - because about a thousand armored vehicles and tanks were delivered this winter and the% ratio of delivered and damaged is incomparable.
And these talks that everything is “in order” with us do not in any way reflect the situation on the ground: there is not enough
and with the "ambulance" in terms of supporting the infantry - I think it's even worse - everything needs to be "coordinated", and therefore - the result tends to zero

Thousands of armored vehicles and tanks, as powerful and dangerous as it sounds! And if we go from the opposite - a dozen tanks that are about to arrive, but still won’t arrive, and in general Israel probably needs more (and they are seriously discussing how 10 tanks will change the situation in the media) and armored vehicles, then somehow it’s not That's exactly what it sounds like.

By the way, what the author did not note, at the same time as the screaming screams about the tactics of swarm drones - screams about loitering ammunition flew somewhere in the hollow - the concept turned out to be unviable. A viable concept is the reconnaissance Orlan and in the wings - the means of striking - it can be the Lancet, Geranium, artillery or aviation ... But it was the loitering ones, as it turned out, that do not close any of the niches - there is no intelligence, no timely destruction, because for this, it is CONSTANTLY necessary to keep thousands of DISPOSABLE drones in the air, which, if targets are not detected, are stuck into the ground anyhow. That is, money thrown away, and in wagons.
Moral: if you hurry, you will make people laugh. By the way, this is most noticeable on the example of the loitering Switchblades, which, in all respects, have done their best in Syria and Ukraine, while the Lancet has already proved everything to everyone. It is in conjunction with Orlan

So it is, although you are minus the local sofa rabble here. He, like the author of the article, does not understand at all the difference between loitering ammunition and kamikaze. The BB itself has a scout function and usually returns if it doesn't find anything.

The Lancet does not fly in conjunction with the Orlan-10, because this is a primitive UAV and, most importantly, without artificial intelligence. ZALA has its own scouts made according to the "flying wing" and tailless design. On an electric motor for 5 hours. They are actually stealth, so they are very rarely shot down, unlike Eagles, who are knocked down in batches

The author of the article did not understand the main feature of ZALA. They have Artificial Intelligence Industrial Variant on Nvidia Jetson TX2 . This is the latest generation of convolutional neural networks, which in 98% of cases exceeds the ability of a person to recognize visual patterns.

ZALA uses convolutional neural networks on the Nvidia engine for a whole bunch of tasks at once
      1. Flight by visual orientation over the terrain without GPS. The AI just compares what it sees with the map in memory. It is impossible to mute the ZALA electronic warfare navigation. Funny cats from Ukrainians are surprised without a Comet with a CRPA antenna ZALA flies in their electronic warfare. Yes, visually, stupid people from the farm
      2. Search for camouflaged objects using AI. Not an operator, but rather Artificial Intelligence on a convolutional neural network is looking for targets. He has better eyesight than humans. Therefore, a scout can conduct his mission in electronic warfare without an operator, even leaving the electronic warfare zone to report that he has found a target. In addition, this allows one operator to control several drones at once, it only confirms the targets
      3. Lancent also flies to the target, visually orienting itself on the terrain and the target is captured by the neural network.

In fact, if it was necessary to make #analogueno, then we got it from ZALA. NATO has nothing at all close to modern neural networks. Another thing is that ZALA's success is that they sent import substitution in the ass and buy modern AI boards from Nvidia on Aliexpress

In fact, this is NVidia smashing NATO)))

According to this principle, US military satellites work to monitor what is of interest from the site - the primary processing of information takes place on the satellites themselves and the already sifted information is transmitted through repeaters to ground stations.
Search for cloaked objects using AI.

This method still needs to be developed. That is, to do it yesterday.
To do this, libraries of possible camouflage methods should be created, in which the soldier's ingenuity is still superior to AI.

The US is using old AI algorithms. In fact, the AI of the Chat GPT class appeared in 2017, everything before this date is rubbish and in the trash.

No soldier's ingenuity can surpass a convolutional neural network trained on thousands of examples of disguise. The AI in Chat GPT simulated a person's speech at about his level. However, convolutional neural networks reached the level of a person a few years ago and are ahead of a person.

Again, you only have a 2% chance of visually outperforming AI in terms of object identification. Moreover, you have no 2% chance to identify equipment. AI can sometimes be beaten by recognizing a person's posture. Otherwise, bipedal mammals have not competed with AI for a long time. In China, the Skyscraper system uses AI to identify 70 million Chinese people online every minute on different cameras. Just in the face. Forget about the soldiers and out of the eye. It's like saying that a spear is a reliable weapon. The $200 fee sees better than you. Try to understand this before you face the use of this technology on you like in China

This "Chat GPT class" AI needs infrastructure like servers and data banks - libraries.

Without being tied to the network for transmitting information "home" - to the cloud server -
the capabilities of a conditional reconnaissance UAV are very limited in recognizing the desired object.

Otherwise, I agree - when using AI, which "lives" not only in the UAV -Ravedchik - the soldier's ingenuity will have to be more ingenious.

In order for it to be taken away with all the "means of landing" in order to reload it with fuel and then send it back, it must fly to the location of its troops ... And as an attack drone, there is a question that it has a warhead and is worth he’s probably on alert, so... You never know, when a drone on a parachute hits the ground, it’s sure that the warhead won’t work when you pick it up from the ground?

In the case of the Lancet from the MoD, no one asks. In fact, ZALA fights autonomously from reconnaissance to defeat. Since they don’t have grandfathers with Charters, that’s why everything works. ZALA receives only an indication of which area to clear from air defense and artillery.

The real involvement of other equipment is there in the integration with the ZALA Scout Zoo radar.

But it is also without grandfathers in stripes. If the Zoo sees a shot, it broadcasts an approximate sector on the radio. The ZALA scout immediately turns the IR head into it and flies to the flashes. This solved both the problem of the low accuracy of the Zoo and the main reason for the genocide of the artillerymen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by the Lancets

What are you saying. In fact, the Lancet has now ousted both the Ka-52 and Su-34 from the theater of operations in terms of defeating equipment by front-line aviation. Both the first and second cannot use missiles to destroy equipment due to air defense problems.

In terms of air defense, you do not understand the use of drones. Drones specifically barrage to destroy air defense are rarely used. The BB concept itself failed, because. there are weak means of reconnaissance, radio engineering and optics. Now air defense usually finds a drone with electronic intelligence. Type Orlan-10 TsN3. Or a Shahid who transmits the radiation of his radar station via a satellite modem (this explains the panic among the Ukrainians that the Shahids transmit something in flight via Iridium). The defeat of the air defense system is usually not carried out by the means that scouted it, but by another kamikaze or OTRK or artillery, if the air defense system is in its zone

And in fact, the displacement of nearby air defense systems does not completely solve the problem of air supremacy. At a distance of about 20 km from the front, we have long ousted the air defense systems of Ukraine. There are Stingers, but a Buk, S-300 or Patriot standing far away makes planes and helicopters descend into the MANPADS zone. The real solution here is planning bombs, as well as replacing attack helicopters with drones. The last one has already happened.

According to the rules of Wikipedia, boots from the sofa write it, but they must refer to AI. If there is no AI, then the article was written in violation of the rules and can be corrected by anyone. In the part of the drones on Wikipedia, there are Ukrainians who write fake lines there, as well as all weapons. Therefore, you need to check everything according to AI quite clearly and take into account even fake AI, because. this is not written by ordinary people, but by SBU employees. Guy, first learn how to use Wikipedia, figure out why the editors left Wikipedia and created Universalis, then teach me how to cook drone cabbage soup.

By the way, you are also plus Ukrainians. They make regular raids on this site. When they were massively banned here, they go minus sensible things and plus those who sow panic or misinformation. This is that you yourself are plused by agents of the Ukrainian special services is also an interesting question.

        Your forelock fell off)

Accurate information about the origin of "Geranium-2" is not yet available. According to some sources, this is a domestic development based on available components, while other sources consider this UAV to be a licensed copy of the Iranian Shahed-136 product.

I think such remarks discredit the level of the site and the article itself. Even if the author is Kirill Ryabov, you can still just not write anything that is such a disgrace.

There are 2 options: either the Geranium was produced in the Russian Federation completely independently, "domestic development based on available components", including domestic engines, it just looks like a "shahed", or it is still produced in the Russian Federation, but under the license of Iran.

Option number 3, that Geranium-2 is an imported product made in Iran, is not considered in the article at all because of its ridiculousness.

    Ага.

What is the disgrace here? It is already clear to everyone that Shaheeds are from Iran and we just have a screwdriver assembly. A whole mega-factory for the production of UAVs like Shaheed worth about $1 billion is being built. From the moment of its launch, ours will produce Shaheeds, probably about 1000 pieces per month. Our engines will be assembled there as well, although the MD 550 is an extremely successful engine.

Officially, both Russia and Iran deny the supply, and therefore the author of the article, too.

The Lancet is industrial espionage in action. They stole from Israel the idea of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbTTX I don’t know. And the geranium is an Iranian craft. Iranians, like the Chinese, copy everything, but the Chinese are still more successful in this.

Stole an idea and industrial espionage are two big differences. The Chinese came up with rockets a thousand years ago, like Iskander is now industrial espionage?

In general, this conflict clearly showed that the correct use of modern weapons is so effective and so much cheaper than classical weapons that, in general, anyone can have deadly power. Now it’s clear how the Yemenis otshpindahorili the Saudis. Lancets and redfields did more effective actions than thousands of artillery systems. If only we had at the beginning of the conflict a couple of three analogs of bayraktar, you see, everything would have ended already.

And if the Ukrainians had our type of air defense, then our “bayraktars” would be in the ditch, like theirs are now. My message is that just as you need a sword, you need a shield...

Lancets and Krasnopoli record their results (conditionally). But there are not thousands of art systems.

And why didn’t this development of UAVs take place over the past 30 years before the start of the NWO?

The situation with UAVs, as well as the situation with the production of microelectronics, and in high-tech industries in general, is SHAME OF THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT!
All this clearly demonstrates her helplessness and spinelessness and blatant RESPONSIBILITY! .
Even in a year, the SVO could long ago establish a gross production of everything and everything.
This is a CRIMINAL inaction that undermines the combat capability of the RF Armed Forces.
If we count all the losses incurred due to the failure of modern means of warfare, including tactical communications, infrared, combat robots, etc. - with this money, ten such programs could have been possible .... And the most insulting thing is our guys who died because of these unscrupulous chinodrals upstairs !!!
Tribunal, resignations, executions!!! To the full extent of wartime!
And I am absolutely sure that we have a GREAT PLENTY of talented, brainy, educated specialists! And we can solve any problems!
But this retractable sawing insolent shobla cynically, in front of everyone, spits on the interests of the Motherland!
It's time to deal with them!

I would like to ask, did you open new production facilities according to the traditional foreign scheme with adaptation to internal roller balls?
Those. closed production unprofitable, people on the street as unemployed, and after a new legal entity and new people?! According to the emerging new concept and financing from the buyer.
And let the previous personnel of the staff like welders, bakers, drivers, mechanics, electricians, etc., seek their happiness in the Employment Centers of the Russian Federation?
After all, in Russia this is the approach of an entrepreneur and a "businessman" - cost reduction.

Basically, the Lancet inflicts blows on the enemy. "Cube" something disappeared from the scene. Perhaps this was somehow influenced by a miss on the M777 howitzer on May 18, 2022 in the area of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbthe settlement of Podgornoye, Donetsk region.

Loitering ammunition is an intermediate stage, generated by the weakness of electronics and inefficient control algorithms. In the future, devices that combine the functions of reconnaissance and destruction will be in the minority, and the majority will be occupied by other weapons.
