Achieved and plans: new submarines for the Russian Navy
SSBN "Generalissimo Suvorov" during the withdrawal from the boathouse, December 2021

The Russian shipbuilding industry, despite all the difficulties and limitations, successfully continues the implementation of a major program for the construction of submarines. Every year to the customer represented by the naval fleet several ships of different types and classes are being handed over, and another number of pennants are expected to be handed over this year. Submarines of the new construction will replenish the strategic and conventional components of the fleet.

Last year's results

Currently, domestic enterprises are conducting serial construction of nuclear and diesel-electric submarines of four types. Special purpose submarines are also being built. The industry regularly bookmarks new orders, launches finished submarines and, after testing, transfers them to the customer. So, several events of this kind took place last year.

On December 29, the Navy received the strategic missile submarine K-553 Generalissimo Suvorov, the sixth ship of Project 955 Borey (the third in the 955A series). In the near future, this submarine will make an inter-naval transition to a permanent base in the Pacific Ocean. On the same day, the next Borey was taken out of the boathouse and launched under the name Emperor Alexander III.

The program for the construction of multi-purpose nuclear submarines pr. 885M "Ash" encountered some difficulties. At the end of last year, the delivery of the fourth "Ash" (the third in the "885M" series), which received the number K-571 and the name "Krasnoyarsk", was expected. However, the tests of the ship dragged on. Its delivery was postponed to the first half of 2023.

Ceremony of the withdrawal of the next "Borea" - "Emperor Alexander III", December 2022

In accordance with the schedule, the construction of diesel-electric boats pr. 636.3 "Varshavyanka" is underway. On November 16, another ship of this type, B-588 Ufa, was handed over to the customer. This is the fourth diesel-electric submarine of the new series intended for KTOF. As planned, one submarine of this type is completed and handed over to the fleet every year.

At the same time, the construction of diesel-electric submarines, pr. 677 Lada, is still facing difficulties. Last year, it was planned to accept the first production boat of this type, the B-586 Kronstadt, into the fleet. Due to the identified shortcomings, tests and improvements continue, and the delivery of the ship has been postponed. At the same time, there are reasons for optimism. So, at the end of December, the next pennant of the series, B-587 Velikiye Luki, was launched. In addition, in June, the laying of the next two orders - "Vologda" and "Yaroslavl" took place.

Thus, last year the Navy, in accordance with the plans, received two new submarines and is now preparing them for full-fledged operation and combat duty. The transmission of two more ships, unfortunately, had to be shifted several months to the right. These pennants will now be included in the 2023 statistics.

Construction continues

The main plans of the shipbuilding industry and the fleet for 2023 are already known. In the coming months, orders carried over from last year will be completed, and in addition, the transfer of the next new-built ships is expected. As in previous years, we are talking about several submarines of different types at once.

Multi-purpose nuclear submarine "Krasnoyarsk", July 2021

According to known data, the SSBN "Emperor Alexander III", launched in December, is now undergoing mooring trials. In the coming months, it will go to sea for factory and state tests, as well as test launches of standard weapons. As a result of these events, no later than December, the submarine will be accepted by the fleet.

The construction of diesel-electric Varshavyanka continues in full accordance with the schedule. In the spring of this year, the fifth pennant of this type for KTOF will be taken out of the shed. The new boat B-608 Mozhaisk will be completed and tested by the end of the year, after which it will be accepted by the customer.

In general, taking into account last year's "debts", the current 2023 will be one of the most successful in modern stories in terms of replenishment of submarine forces. The Navy will receive one Borey strategic missile carrier, one Yasen-M multi-purpose nuclear submarine, Varshavyanka, and, probably, two Ladas at once. Judging by the peculiarities of the current construction and other works, significant transfers should not be expected this year.

Plans for the future

Simultaneously with the delivery of finished ships, the construction of the following orders, which are planned to be transferred to the fleet in the foreseeable future, continues. In addition, the next ships are being laid down, which will be completed and handed over to the customer only in a few years. The current 2023 will not be an exception - the construction and laying of nuclear submarines and diesel-electric submarines of various types will continue.

Diesel-electric submarine "Ufa", November 2022

So, at the end of 2021, it became known that in 2023 the laying of two next Borei-A SSBNs would take place. These will be the 11th and 12th submarines of the series. The exact date of the start of construction and the names of the ships have not yet been called. Given the current pace of construction of Project 955A submarines, it can be assumed that two orders will be completed at the beginning of the next decade.

In the coming years, the situation with the multi-purpose "Ash" should change. So far, they are handed over irregularly and with an interval of several years. However, after 2024-25. the delivery of such nuclear submarines should become rhythmic and annual. Such changes, most likely, will begin with the next "Arkhangelsk" and "Perm", already laid down and under construction.

The construction of non-nuclear "Varshavyanka" will continue. Now the boat "Yakutsk" is in the workshop, the last in the series for KTOF. There is the following contract for four diesel-electric submarines for the Baltic and Northern fleets. According to various sources, the first two of them, which have already received the names "Petrozavodsk" and "Murmansk", can be laid in 2023. Their construction will take no more than 2-3 years.

Successes and difficulties

Thus, submarine shipbuilding continues to solve the assigned tasks and regularly transfers new ships of various types to the navy. Due to such construction, the planned renewal of the submarine forces of all the main operational-strategic formations of the Navy is carried out, aimed at maintaining and increasing combat capability.

"Velikie Luki" project "Lada", December 2022

The submarine force modernization program faces objective organizational, technological, financial and other limitations. In addition, in recent years, new difficulties and potential threats have arisen due to the deterioration of the international situation, and in 2022 the situation worsened further. Perhaps these processes could also affect the process of building submarines.

Nevertheless, despite all the difficulties, last year the built submarines were handed over to the customer. At the same time, one of them was a strategic missile cruiser, designed to strengthen a particularly important component of the Navy and the armed forces as a whole. The surrender of several other ships had to be postponed, but we are only talking about a few extra months, and the flag will soon be raised on these submarines.

With all this, the construction does not stop. New pennants of all major projects are being laid, built, launched and tested. The fleet will be able to receive the next submarines this year, and in the next 2024, these events will be repeated, but with other orders.

It should be noted that the construction of submarines, despite all external factors, etc., has long become a constant and rhythmic process. So, SSBNs pr. 955 (A) are regularly laid down and transferred to the fleet, although construction takes several years. The construction of diesel-electric submarines, project 636.3, looks similar, but such boats are built faster. Now the industry needs to establish the production of nuclear submarines, pr. 885M and non-nuclear "677", so that the fleet receives them just as regularly.

Judging by news In recent years, all the tasks set have been successfully solved, although achieving the desired results requires a lot of effort and time. Nevertheless, general trends are optimistic and allow us to speak confidently about the successful modernization and development of submarine forces.

We need to establish interaction between diesel and nuclear submarines (and nuclear icebreakers) - this will achieve a secret transfer (in case of hostilities) from any water area (Pacific, North, Atlantic, Indian) ocean (regiment or brigade of diesel submarines) nuclear icebreakers and nuclear submarines.

Yeah, the use of nuclear icebreakers and secret transfers somehow don’t fit together ...

These are all Soviet development projects. They are over 30 years old or more. Where are the new projects, for example, based on flocks of unmanned submarines?

And what, was it like that? In fact, D. Sakharov developed the SBP for the T-15 torpedo. AHA.
But I haven’t heard anything about the T-14. If there is such infa, enlighten, plz! bully

About VNEU something has not been written anywhere for a long time. Have you decided not to develop this topic anymore? Would have stolen then at least, or something.

You're right. And there was no one to find out ... Mina (Maxim Klimov) was apparently sent by the admins to an eternal ban. And then the censorship began to crush "any freedom of information." Yes, and the leaders of the USC are not really trying to interview the public ... So an info vacuum has formed around the topic.
But in general, from the old messages:
      - the initiative development of Malachite of a single control unit based on a closed-cycle gas turbine should appear in 2023;
      - TsKB MT Rubin promised to finish its version of VNEU based on ECG and diesel fuel reforming;
But the world trend is now leaning towards replacing VNEU with more capacious and powerful electric storage devices. energy. LIAB has already passed the stage. Now kulibins are finishing AB based on magnesium components and other elements, which are 10-15 times more effective than LIAB. The Japanese are already following this path. The Deutschers also thought about this ... Apparently, we will also get on these "skis".
      Something like this, however. Yeah

It's clear with strategists. We don't have many multipurpose ones. And diesels in general the cat cried. I think that there should be 18 diesel engines in each fleet. Only in the Baltic is enough 6 pieces.

Why are there so many diesel engines in the Northern Fleet?
In fact, the number and tasks of submarines are determined by the doctrine of the state and a specific basin (theater of operations).

I think there are two factors:
        1. Defense of the Northern Fleet from NATO nuclear submarines
        2. Taking into account the deficit of the carrier of the CD, the saturation of the CD and their carriers of the Northern Fleet.

And that Kirill Ryabov did not read the program for the construction of nuclear submarines? All his rassusolivaniya not worth a damn! All boats are laid down and built in accordance with the construction program. On average, a multi-purpose and strategist building takes 7 years, Severodvinsk shipbuilders promise and implement improvements in work and promise to reduce the period to 6 years. Boreev was laid down 10 boats, two more were added. According to Yaseny, 9 boats were laid down, the last Vladivostok will be handed over in 2028. Everything is scheduled, and then they will either continue the series, or they will build boats of the next generation.
Varshavyanka, as they sculpted according to the plan, they build one boat in 2 years. They will finish building for the Pacific Fleet, they will start building a series for the Northern Fleet and possibly for the Baltic Fleet.
With Ladami, they did not solve the problem with VNEU, but began to build boats, so we are suffering.
Kirill Ryabov did not say anything new.
And this is not the first case of “water”, and sometimes articles with distorted truth or articles not thoroughly checked by the editors.
It looks like the topwar is getting smaller! (((

First of all, the country lacks diesel engines. And this is the basis of the fleet. A quiet atom will not work. Expensive and pointless in war. Atomic, this is an ace in the hole. Diesel is a workhorse. But the main thing is the crews. During the years of idiocy, they ruined everything and dispersed everyone. It makes no sense to talk about infrastructure.

VNEU options implemented in the West are practically impossible for use in Russia due to degradation or lack of necessary scientific, technical and technological competencies. This is clear to any objective observer with engineering and manufacturing experience. Back in 1987, LPMB Rubin began designing a new generation of diesel-electric submarines with an electrochemical VNEU. Thirty-five (35!!!) years have passed, the boat has been manufactured, tested, VNEU on it the fleet recognized it as inefficient, read, inoperative. Why, why? Apparently, scientific and technological capabilities did not allow. Now Malachite has joined the race of Russian VNEU, sawing gas turbine technology using cryogenic oxygen. Will it cut out? Perhaps the St. Petersburg joint-stock company UEC-Klimov has not completely died out yet, it has some Soviet experience, suddenly they will be able to help Malachite. These sad results, of course, do not please the Russian fleet. After all, it is impossible to deny the vital need for VNEU to provide an auxiliary submarine with the strategic stability of SSBNs. How to effectively resolve this conflict? And is it solvable at all? Well, if you put things in order in the unhealthy (judging by the results of activities over the six five-year plans since the start of work on VNEU), IMHO, relations between the design and installation bureaus and the ordering department of the Navy. And, of course, by limiting the inevitable lobbying and stopping, if possible, negative circumstances (apparently, the wrong ones are sitting there and ordering the wrong ones !!). Then, almost in the shortest possible time, we will have VNEU! Where? But from here. Russia has not yet lost the latest competencies in the development of both internal combustion engines and gas turbine engines, and, in addition, has vast experience in the use of rocket fuels on high-boiling components. Therefore, by focusing the necessary engineering resource on the development
    a) an air-independent internal combustion engine (ICE), using an appropriate high-boiling oxidizer as an oxidizer, within two to three years, it is possible to obtain both a sustainer engine of our diesel-electric submarines and, in extreme cases, an auxiliary one. The experience of using high-boiling oxidizers in Roskosmos in general and in the fleet, in particular, is the richest, the best in the world, which will provide both the necessary technical solution for the duration of the clandestine expedition of the boat, and the safety of operation of the propulsion system.
It is also possible to redirect efforts in parallel to the development of an alternative to anaerobic ICE:
    b) by performing the conversion of a gas turbine engine for use as an anaerobic marine gas turbine plant (GTU) - power plant, again with the replacement of oxygen with a high-boiling oxidizer. True, the consumption of fuel and oxidizer in comparison with the internal combustion engine increases significantly, from 1,6 to 1,8 times, respectively. But! It is important here: half of the power of an atmospheric gas turbine engine goes to its turbocharger, which serves the needs of the machine itself, so the gain in efficiency in the absence of this unit increases the overall performance of the product! And the main advantages of a gas turbine engine - the absence of an external cooling system, low oil consumption, high traction characteristics, excellent starting qualities, are very attractive. In addition, the gas turbine engine is unattainably superior to the diesel engine in terms of the coefficient of adaptability and thus allows to reduce the number of gears in the transmission. Utilization of the exhaust of converted internal combustion engines and gas turbine engines is technically simple, the solutions are known and tested. True, what else is important here (but it is also a stumbling block for implementation!) - research work is not required to implement both directions in the creation of VNEU. Everything is decided within the framework of R & D (experimental design work). But with dissertations in this version it will be a bit tight, which, apparently, leads to spending money on all kinds of electrochemistry, cryogenics, etc. searchlights). The will of the Customer and routine engineering, although very difficult, work is required. Marshal Grechko, rise up and give them all (instructions)!
