JDAM-ER bomb on trial

At the end of last year, it became known that the United States could transfer controlled assets to the Kyiv regime. aviation JDAM bombs. Deliveries of such weapons, apparently, have not yet begun and are in the preparation stage. At the same time, new details become known. Thus, it is reported that the Pentagon will provide Ukrainian partners with improved JDAM-ER bombs, which are distinguished by an increased flight range.

In preparation

In mid-December, The Washington Post revealed the details of another US military aid package for Ukraine. It was reported that it will include Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, designed to rebuild free-falling bombs into guided ones. The volume of such supplies and the timing of the transfer were not specified.

A few days later, on December 21, the Pentagon officially announced a new aid package worth $1,85 billion. It was reported that, along with other weapons, it would include precision-guided aviation munitions. At the same time, they did not disclose the type of these products and other aspects of the supply, citing the negative consequences of disclosing such information.

As far as is known, deliveries of the promised high-precision munitions have not yet begun. The possible timing of their shipment is still unknown. However, a few days ago, new details of the current situation appeared in the American media.

Curious information was published on February 21 by Bloomberg news agency. Citing two sources who wished to remain anonymous, it writes that the Pentagon is going to send an improved version of JDAM-ER bombs to Ukraine. They differ from the basic JDAM modification in their increased flight range.

Bloomberg also draws attention to the contract signed on January 20 by the Pentagon and Boeing. Under the terms of this agreement, by the end of June, the contractor must manufacture and deliver JDAM (-ER) bombs with a total value of $ 40,5 million. The number of items is not specified, but the available data on their price allow us to give an approximate order of numbers.

Product in flight configuration

It follows from the contract that the Boeing company, with the assistance of Ukrainian specialists, has developed a method for integrating American bombs into the armament complex of Soviet-style aircraft. After certain improvements, old-style fighters can not only carry and drop bombs, but also enter data into them.

Thus, Washington decided to transfer ready-made JDAM bombs or kits for their manufacture to the Kyiv regime, and we can also talk about their improved version. It is planned to supply products of new production, the production of which will take several months. If the shipment is carried out as the batches are ready, then the first bombs / kits may reach Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Base and modification

The basic version of the JDAM kit was developed by Boeing in the nineties. The aim of the project was to create a set of devices for installation on a free-fall bomb, turning it into a precision weapon. In 1997, the JDAM kit with bombs of various calibers entered service with US tactical aviation. Subsequently, export deliveries began. JDAMs were actively used in various operations and showed high efficiency.

In the mid-XNUMXs, Boeing began developing an improved version of the JDAM kit. First of all, it was planned to increase the range of the planning flight - this was reflected in the designation of the JDAM-ER (Extended Range) project. The development of such a kit was carried out with the participation of several subcontractors, incl. from third countries.

In the middle of the tenth years, the prototype JDAM-ER products passed the necessary tests and confirmed the calculated characteristics. As a result of these events, the Pentagon began to plan future purchases. Also, foreign countries became interested in bombs with increased flight characteristics.

Additional devices

In terms of overall solutions and architecture, the JDAM-ER project repeats the basic JDAM. A set of unified components and devices has been developed for installation on various types of free-fall bombs in calibers from 500 to 2000 pounds. Thanks to this equipment, the bomb gets new combat capabilities.

Using the JDAM kit version XNUMX

Like the basic kit, the new JDAM-ER includes a tail section with navigation and control devices. The bomb is equipped with satellite and inertial navigation and is capable of hitting targets with known coordinates transmitted from the carrier aircraft. The semi-active laser homing head from the LJDAM project to the ER project, as far as is known, was not implemented.

The JDAM-ER is distinguished by the use of a wing-mounted module mounted on the bomb body. After being dropped from the carrier, the wing opens and provides a gliding flight to the target. A JDAM-type bomb, under optimal release conditions, is capable of flying up to 25-28 km. For JDAM-ER, a range of 70-72 km is declared. To achieve such characteristics, the release must be carried out at an altitude of at least 10-12 km at a high subsonic speed of the carrier.

Carriers of JDAM-ER bombs can be various aircraft equipped with NATO-style weapon control systems. In this case, as is now known, it is possible to use other carriers. This requires a certain processing of on-board radio-electronic equipment with the installation of certain devices. How difficult is such a refinement and whether it allows you to get all the original functions without restrictions, is not reported.

Hypothetical results

Judging by the last news, the United States really decided to transfer modern guided bombs to the Kyiv regime. The number, timing of deliveries and modifications of such weapons are not specified, but it is already possible to make the first forecasts and imagine what their appearance in the combat zone will lead to.

Foreign media enthusiastically greeted the news of the future delivery of JDAM-ER. They point to the strengths of such kits and bombs, and also expect that they will significantly affect the capabilities of Ukrainian aviation. Such estimates are based on the high tabular characteristics of American bombs and their declared capabilities. In particular, it is noted that a drop range of at least 70 km will allow the carrier aircraft to carry out an attack without entering the zone of responsibility of short-range air defense systems.

However, the real potential of the JDAM-ER bombs and the effect of their use is in question. They depend on a number of factors, each of which is capable of at least reducing the effectiveness of such weapons. At the same time, the combination of all existing and expected factors generally excludes any reason for the optimism of the Ukrainian side.

JDAM bombs under the wing drone-carrier

The risks start at the carrier level. It is not known how successful the Boeing project is to refine the control systems on Soviet-style aircraft. So, it is necessary to be able to enter data into the GOS of the bomb during the flight. In the absence of such a function, the value of the entire shock complex is sharply reduced.

It should be remembered about the Russian air defense. JDAM-ER bombs allow the carrier not to enter the short-range air defense zone, but even before reaching the launch line, it can be intercepted by mid-range systems. Ukrainian aviation constantly suffers losses, and the appearance of a new foreign bomb in it will not change this situation.

The JDAM-ER bomb itself, after being dropped, also becomes a target for anti-aircraft systems. Despite its small size and other characteristics, it remains an aerodynamic target with limited flight speed and limited maneuverability. All these features will contribute to its early detection and defeat by the forces of one or another modern Russian air defense system. The probability of a breakthrough of the existing air defense system is extremely small.

General trends

Thus, the United States was going to transfer to Ukraine another sample of modern guided weapons. Deliveries are expected in the coming months, but no exact date has been given. The results of the development and use of such weapons are also still in question - and its users have no reason to be optimistic. In general, uncertainty remains, but even in this case, curious trends appear.

Thus, Washington continues to supply the Kiev regime with weapons and is gradually switching to modern models with a high level of declared characteristics. At the same time, the delivery of modern aerial bombs is not accompanied by the transfer of the corresponding aircraft. At the same time, the American side is ready to help with the refinement of available Soviet-style fighters.

All this shows that the United States intends to continue supporting Ukraine and prolong the fighting. However, at the moment they are not ready to provide any weapons and equipment, incl. in large quantities. Accordingly, the results of such assistance will also be limited - or not noticeable at all. However, our air defense calculations will have to work.

These bombs will be operational only with advanced aviation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And the higher the H of the flight, the more sense from the bomb. No one canceled ballistics ...
That is, it all comes down to a "tick" for the press and "inspiration / motivation of the allies" that there was a transfer of such weapons, nothing more ...

F-16 will do? And the fact that the Ukrainians did not learn to pilot them is not necessary. There have already been field tests of the F-16, controlled by artificial intelligence. There is no more convenient opportunity than 404 to test in real combat conditions, and it is unlikely to present itself soon. So the senile Biden's chatter about the possible deliveries of the F-16 to / from in the future may well come true.

So far, there are more questions about the use of this planning bomb than answers. If only from cheap UAVs, since you will have to work within the reach of the S-300/400.

It is also screw, but it is required to be dropped "at high subsonic speed." Here those MiG-15s that were converted into targets would come in handy, but they are no longer there. No, of course, you can reset at a lower speed, but the range is proportionally smaller.

Yes, even Fu-22. Until the litak rises to a height, these bombs cannot be dropped at a great distance. And at high altitude, long-range air defense is waiting for the Ukropov birds and on Sushki.

There is no need to climb anywhere.
Guided and gliding bombs, as well as unguided ones, can be thrown from both low and extremely low altitudes.

Ryabov's constant Uryaklov articles vividly demonstrate his level of technical/military development and respect for readers.

For example, here is a diagram of the use of guided and unguided bombs by the US Air Force, which is "googled" in a minute:

This one picture from some old instruction contains more useful material on the topic than the entire article by Ryabov.

And as we can see, for conventional JDAMs, the flight range from the drop point from a low-altitude pitch-up is 5-9 km.
For Glidebombs (gliding bombs), which are the JDAM-ER, the flight range after dropping from a low altitude pitch is already 28-46 km.

The spread in range depends on the speed and angle of attack at the time of release and the caliber of the bomb itself.
Upper limit (46 km) for 500 lb (227 kg) bombs, lower for 2000 lb (904 kg) bombs.

And don't forget that this managed bombs, and not NAR or FAB from a pitch-up (hello 70% of new weapons), that is, it will fly almost to the opornik / location and that's it, even a 227 kg bomb is more than 100 kg of explosives, that is, you can say goodbye to the opornik and drugs.

If our pilots had such weapons, then there would be continuous laudatory odes at VO, but Ryabov and Co. are paid for the number of letters and urapatriotism, and not objectivity.

And now the backfilling question is how the author wants to intercept these "targets for anti-aircraft systems", if neither the drop height, nor the nose-up flight profile, nor the size, nor the absence of thermal radiation make them easy targets for at least detection, and the price of the missiles themselves several times the cost of such a bomb?
Apparently, the example of the Antonovsky Bridge did not teach the author anything.

I am a big supporter of planning bombs, but their effectiveness is much higher in the case of our Air Force against Ukrainian air defenses.

Old Buki and S-300 and NOSAMS and IRIS do not work for 70 km of a typical flight. Plus, the Ukrainians cannot keep the air defense system within the reach of our artillery and cannot turn on the surveillance radar all the time, because. she will be slapped by the same Iskander. It takes about 34 minutes for the Su-10 to climb 2 km and fall back. Most likely this will happen between the inclusion of "ambush air defense systems" in the Armed Forces of Ukraine

However, our air defense is more complicated. S-400 and A-50 constantly on from a decent distance of about 200 km. There are also Su-35 patrols and Su-57 is also used as an air defense aircraft. Therefore, a rise of 10 km near the aircraft of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will almost always be detected and most likely it will be shot down by an S-400 over-the-horizon missile. RUSI notes their great efficiency, as many MiGs of Ukrainians were shot down already having gone beyond the horizon from the S-400 due to the capture of a large radar station in the package.

Therefore, I would not expect an effect like from GMLRS. However, with the weaker air defense of Ukraine, planning bombs can do a lot of trouble for him. Su-34s are already throwing several tons of bombs every day, but not a single Su-34 has been shot down, although a drop from a height of 10 km is 50-70 km from the target

50 km from the LBS and at an altitude of 10 km, this will be an easy target for the Su-35. It will be visible for 300 km. And if you drop it from low altitudes and from a pitch-up, then it’s good if it flies away for 20 km. And in any case, there will be no talk of mass raids.

Reality shows the opposite. Israel is bombing with F-16s protected by Buk and S-300 objects in Syria with absolute impunity. At best, a small part of the bombs is knocked down.
The aviation action algorithm is simple. The RER systems locate the least “visible” radar zones, a fighter / bomber flies into this zone at extremely low altitudes, makes a slide to the required height, releases bombs, makes an anti-missile maneuver and returns back at extremely low altitudes.
In fact, the aircraft is in the theoretical zone of operation of the air defense radar for a few minutes, this is not enough to detect, identify, take on escort and hit the target. Even if this happens, given that most air defense missiles are controlled by radio command, it is enough for the aircraft to go below the radio horizon.
Naturally, air defense crews are further away from protected objects. Considering the massive use of high-precision projectiles and chimarsoids, deep in the rear. Accordingly, at a depth of 50-100 km from the front, all warehouses, command posts, positions are under the impact of 250-500 kg of bombs.
The only way out is the constant patrolling of AWACS aircraft along with fighters. Naturally, it was best to destroy the Ukrainian Air Force in the first 3 days. But both options are impossible to implement, in view of the complete degradation of the Russian Air Force.

In their case, it has. Jewish bombers approach the drop line hiding behind the Golan Heights (2 km) and, from a pitch-up, drop / launch immediately leaving with a decrease behind them.
And with Ukrainians there are no heights. BUT, no one canceled the roll-up reset anyway, just the height, which means the range will be less. And given the high accuracy, the thing will still be extremely unpleasant for us ...

          - from the maximum height (10-15 km)
          - with an optimum speed of 900 km/h
-on an enemy the size of Avax or Boeing -777, not changing its course (which is important), not making maneuvers.
The real range of the RVVBD for a fighter-type target is hardly more than 50-60 km.

            1. Well, there is a little A-50. And in order to achieve the maximum range with a planning bomb, you will have to fly high - and it will be seen that way.
            2. In the MiG-31 and MiG-25, their weapons are designed to be used from "their" speeds. While I am reading, including in the bourgeois press, that the MiG-31s are firing without approaching the front line
(or from the airspace of Belarus) and without any particular risk. 50-60 is about the R-33. Even for a maneuvering target, but from an optimal angle and with an excess over the target, the R-37 may well have a "hundred".

The example of Israel in this case is absolutely not correct.
The main targets for strikes are in southern Syria. Syrian crews work there, the equipment is mostly very old. There is a review on VO from Sergey Linnik, where he pointed out the main problems, you can read it.
Russian air defense systems with our own anti-aircraft gunners are located in the north of Syria, from Latakia to Damascus 120 km, they physically cannot work on Israeli aviation, even if they really want to (and there is a suspicion that they don’t really want to).

As already noted, JDAM-ERs go up to 46 km from a pitch, the maximum distance for an attack is 500 pounds. In reality, given the worst training of crews / non-core carriers, even this indicator may be unattainable. At the same time, military air defense systems are capable of operating on low-flying targets at distances of 15-20 km. Even taking into account the fact that they are not placed directly on the front line, the carrier will not be able to safely approach closer than 15 km. Thus, the maximum length of the "new arm" is 30 kilometers, with powerful bombs in general 10 kilometers.

Of course, and this is unpleasant, any supplies are unpleasant, but is this weapon capable of significantly affecting the situation at the front? I don't think so.

It would seem that in a year, that is, 365 days, even completely stubborn turbo-patriots should have realized that the United States does not supply any of the weapons to Ukraine "from the lantern".
It would seem that in a year, that is, 365 days, even stubborn turbopatriots should have mastered the Internet and learned how to obtain information about weapons systems supplied to Ukraine not only from the articles of a certain Ryabov, completely useless in content, but also from alternative sources.
But where is it. Day after day, for a whole year, the most ignorant in terms of weapons, the author Ryabov, performs the routine refrain about the "imperceptible results" of the supply of weapons to Ukraine, and the turbo-patriots applaud him unanimously. In this regard, a logical question arises - maybe it is worth revising the Law of the Russian Federation "On psychiatric care and guarantees of the rights of citizens in its provision", adopted on July 2, 1992?

Curious information was published on February 21 by Bloomberg news agency. Citing two sources who wished to remain anonymous, it writes that the Pentagon is going to send an improved version of JDAM-ER bombs to Ukraine.

It is unfortunate that neither from Shoigu, nor from Konashenkov, nor from Putin can we get information that is curious for us, answering the questions: “How long?” and “When do we start and finish?”

"How long?" and “When do we start and finish?”

This question should be asked to the weapons design bureau, because their duty is to look 20 years ahead

Korean artillery shell (ggrm-5) - planning range of which is 100 km (the USA already has them for the Zamvolt destroyers)

the authors of the article, to put it mildly, "not in themselves." If you take the facts (and not the mrii of the author), the Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot even use conventional and anti-radar missiles from their aircraft - all aircraft are shot down before entering the work area. And then - bombs, yes they can, and so on. Next - what will be the correction for - according to the GPS again? )) And if rab? And to fly anywhere, everything, as always, according to the Kakelov scheme. In short - another shit that will not help the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
