Coastal missile systems "Bastion" in the Special Operations and in the service
DBK "Bastion" in position, March 2022
The Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy takes the most active part in the current Special Operation. With the help of missile systems in service, he regularly delivers high-precision strikes against the enemy’s military infrastructure. In particular, tasks of this kind are assigned to Bastion coastal missile systems armed with Onyx anti-ship missiles. Anti-ship missiles of this type have confirmed their ability to effectively hit ground targets.
Combat application
In mid-March 2022, less than a month after the start of the Special Operation, the Ministry of Defense for the first time announced the start of combat work of missilemen of the Black Sea Coastal Forces fleet. Then the calculations of the DBK "Bastion" launched a missile attack on remote objects of Ukrainian formations in the territory of the Odessa region. Soon they showed a video of combat launches.
In the future, the Ministry of Defense and the media repeatedly talked about new episodes of the combat use of the Bastions and published various photo and video materials. It was reported about the defeat of certain objects, and exclusively on the ground - since the enemy had already lost the fleet. All this showed the versatility of the DBK and its anti-ship missiles, as well as their ability to solve various combat missions.
Start of a rocket
The first known episode of the combat use of the Bastion DBK took place on March 18. The complex struck at two objects of radio and electronic intelligence of the enemy in the territory of the Odessa region. Both targets are destroyed. On April 1, it was reported that on the eve of several Onyx anti-ship missiles were used to destroy the enemy command post. The missiles disabled the facility, and also killed several dozen people. personnel, 5 units. armored vehicles and vehicles. A few days later, "Bastion" destroyed the center for the collection and training of foreign mercenaries in the Odessa region.
RCC "Onyx" can also be used against aviation enemy and related infrastructure. So, on the night of May 9, missiles hit the airfield in the area of the settlement. Artsyz (Odessa region) As a result of the strike, six Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters were destroyed. On June 20, the Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial system was destroyed at the same airfield. Anti-ship missiles hit the control station and two UAVs.
June 24 reported the successful use of "Onyx" as a means of combating air defense. Missiles of this type successfully destroyed the starting position of the S-300 anti-aircraft system in the Odessa region.
SBK "Bastion" is quite actively used in the framework of the Special Operation and regularly attack various targets. Back in May last year, the TASS agency, citing its sources, reported that in the first two months of combat work, missilemen of the coastal troops of the KChF used up several dozen Onyx products and successfully hit a large number of enemy targets.
In the following months, the combat use of the Bastions and Onyxes continued. This suggests that by now the number of spent missiles has increased many times, and together with the number of enemy objects destroyed. Obviously, the combat work of the DBK with the anti-ship missiles will not end there - and the combat score will continue to grow.
Complexes in service
To date, the Bastion missile defense system has managed to enter service with all the main formations of the Navy, with the exception of the Caspian Flotilla. According to known data, only complexes of the coastal troops of the Black Sea Fleet participate in the forced demilitarization of Ukraine. Missilemen of other fleets continue to serve on a regular basis, are on duty and participate in maneuvers, incl. with the implementation of combat training launches of missiles.
For example, in early September last year, the Bastions of the Pacific Fleet, deployed on about. Matua (Kuril Islands), participated in the strategic command and staff exercise "Vostok-2022". The imaginary enemy attempted to land an amphibious assault in the area covered by the Bastions. His landing ship was promptly discovered and taken for escort. When the target entered the affected area, the Onyx anti-ship missiles were launched. The training target was hit.
In mid-September, another unit of the Bastions of the KTOF participated in the Umka-2022 exercises. The complex was deployed in Chukotka. He successfully discovered, took on escort and hit a surface target at a distance of 300 km.
In early December, the Ministry of Defense announced the strengthening of the Bastion group protecting the Kuril Islands. Another complex was deployed on about. Paramushir and began to be on constant duty. To ensure its work, an autonomous military camp was specially built.
The exercises are also being conducted by other fleets. So, on February 12, the missilemen of the Baltic Fleet worked out the use of Onyx missiles. During the next training session, they deployed the DBK to positions, discovered and escorted a conditional enemy ship formation. Instead of real firing of anti-ship missiles, this time electronic launches were performed - an imitation of all the necessary procedures without a direct launch.
Preparations for the destruction of Ukrainian facilities, April 2022
DBK "Bastion" continue to serve as part of the coastal troops of all major fleets and are on combat duty in critical areas. In addition, training events are regularly held, from training individual crews to full-scale fleet maneuvers. It is clear that such Bastion service will continue for a long time, and more reports of deployments or training launches should be expected.
Technical excellence
The 3K55 Bastion coastal missile system is a mobile system designed to detect and destroy enemy surface ships and naval formations in the coastal zone. The DBK includes several different means on self-propelled chassis and is able to independently change position in a short time. Also, the complex can be transported by military transport aircraft or landing ships.
A typical Bastion DBK division includes four K-340P self-propelled launchers on the MZKT-7930 chassis with two Onyx missiles on each. There is also one or two combat control vehicles, a combat duty support vehicle and transport-loading vehicles. In the course of duty and combat work, the DBK can interact with the command and control systems of the coastal forces and the Navy to obtain information about the situation and targets.
Bastion uses anti-ship missiles of the P-800 / 3M55 / Onyx type. This is a supersonic rocket of normal aerodynamic configuration with a solid-propellant starting and ramjet propulsion engines. The product with a length of 8 m and a mass of 3 tons in flight develops a speed of up to 2,6 M and rises to a height of up to 14 km. The range of the basic version of "Onyx" reaches 300 km, the upgraded anti-ship missile "Onyx-M" flies to 800 km.
The missile is equipped with an inertial navigation system and a radio altimeter to fly to the target area. The search for an object and guidance on it are carried out using an active-passive radar seeker. Such a head is capable of directing a missile at a surface or ground object, incl. in the presence of natural interference or under the influence of enemy electronic warfare equipment.
The anti-ship missile is equipped with a high-explosive penetrating warhead weighing 200 kg. Such a warhead allows you to confidently hit and disable surface ships with a displacement of several thousand tons, up to frigates and destroyers. Larger targets require multiple missiles to hit. In addition, the warhead is capable of hitting various ground targets, including fortified structures.
Complex "Bastion" on about. Paramushir, December 2022
In the future, the Bastion DBK should receive a new Zircon hypersonic missile. Such a product will not require a significant restructuring of the complex and its facilities, but will improve the performance and efficiency. Thus, the firing range will reach or exceed 1 km, and the highest missile flight speed will sharply increase the probability of successfully hitting the target and increase the impact on it.
Watch continues
The Bastion coastal missile system entered service with the Russian Navy in 2010. Over the past decade, the industry has built a large number of such systems, due to which it was possible to re-equip a number of units from all fleets. Now serial "Bastions" with Onyx missiles provide cover for important sections of the coast and the nearest water areas.
For some time, "Bastions" could only show their capabilities during the exercises. But in 2016, such DBKs were deployed in Syria, and their anti-ship missiles were used against real targets, and since March 2022 they have regularly launched launches against Ukrainian targets. During the actual combat use of the Bastion DBK, they showed themselves in the best possible way. They made a certain contribution to achieving the goals of the Special Operation, and also showed that the country's maritime borders are under reliable protection.
