The Russian ground forces are armed with a wide range of various anti-tank weapons, and all of them are actively used in the current Special Operation. A prominent place in the processes of combating enemy armored vehicles is occupied by disposable rocket-propelled anti-tank grenades. In particular, it is known about the use of RPG-30 "Hook" grenades. Due to the special design, such products are able to hit even the most complex armored targets with additional protection.

grenade in battle

The first information about the presence of RPG-30 grenades in the combat zone was received already in the first days of the Special Operation - at the turn of February-March 2022. Later, various photos and videos regularly appeared in open sources showing "Hooks" in the hands of our fighters, in caps etc. Both combat-ready products and used "pipes" fell into the frame.

Video footage of the combat use of the RPG-30 in different situations was published several times. Regardless of the circumstances, the shooting process looked the same: the grenade launcher takes an advantageous position, finds a target and directs weaponand then fires a shot. For obvious reasons, front-line operators and photographers do not always have the opportunity to capture the moment a grenade hit and the results of firing. Nevertheless, the results of the use of "Hooks" are generally clear.

RPG-30 grenades are used primarily by the ground forces of the Russian army, as well as other structures of the armed forces and other departments. In addition, in order to help, such products were transferred to the people's militia of the republics. There is information about the hit of a certain number of "Hooks" in the hands of the enemy. However, these products were soon recaptured.

It is obvious that the use of RPG-30 in the zone of the Special Operation will continue. Such weapons will have to complement other anti-tank weapons of the Russian army. The presence of several different grenades, grenade launchers and missile systems in a certain way will improve the capabilities of the infantry in combating enemy armored vehicles and will make it possible to solve this problem more flexibly.

It should be expected that in the near or medium term, the value of reactive "Hooks" may increase. Several foreign states have promised to transfer to Ukraine a number of modern tanks NATO pattern. To combat these objects, various weapons will be needed, incl. RPG-30 products. However, in the current situation, a large number of anti-tank weapons will not be superfluous.

For complex tasks

A promising reactive anti-tank grenade RPG-30 (code "Hook") was developed at NPO "Basalt" (Krasnoarmeysk, Moscow region) in the XNUMXs. The goal of the project was to create a new one-time infantry weapon capable of hitting any modern main tanks, incl. equipped with additional protection - dynamic and active.

To solve the set technical problems within the framework of the "Hook" theme, fundamentally new ideas were proposed that were not previously used in domestic projects. The development of such solutions required time and effort, but the work was successfully completed. At the turn of the 30s and XNUMXs, tests were carried out, and the finished RPG-XNUMX grenade confirmed its characteristics.

Based on the results of tests in 2012, the RPG-30 "Hook" product (GRAU index 7P53) was put into service. Shortly thereafter, it became known about the start of mass production and procurement of weapons for the armed forces. In addition, the new product was regularly shown at military-technical exhibitions in order to attract potential customers. However, nothing is known about export contracts yet. For one reason or another, foreign armies prefer other Russian-made anti-tank systems.

It can be assumed that the experience of using "Hooks" in the current Special Operation will affect the future fate of these weapons. If its real indicators meet or exceed the expectations of the Ministry of Defense, purchases will continue, incl. with increasing volumes. In addition, the rocket-propelled grenade will receive some kind of publicity, and this will attract foreign customers.

Double action

The rocket-propelled anti-tank grenade RPG-30 "Hook" is designed to destroy modern main battle tanks equipped with active and / or dynamic protection. The product includes several main components, the composition of which corresponds to the intended task. This is a launcher of an unusual layout, equipped with aiming and shot control tools, as well as a combat grenade and a simulated grenade.

The launcher "Hook" has a specific design and outwardly differs from other domestic RPGs. It consists of two sealed tubes-containers connected to each other. The diameter of the larger pipe is 105 mm. The total length of the product is 1135 mm. The curb weight is 10,3 kg, of which about half is accounted for by two ammunition.

A PG-30 combat grenade is placed in a larger container pipe. This is a 105 mm caliber rocket ammunition, more than 1 m long and weighing 4,5 kg. The leading and main charges of the cumulative warhead, as well as the solid propellant engine, are sequentially placed in the body of variable diameter. The hull has a stabilizer that deploys in flight.

In a container of smaller diameter, an IG-30 grenade simulator is placed. This is a small-sized "rocket" with its own engine and a corner reflector in the head. The simulator has the same ballistics and radar signature as the live grenade. At the same time, the product does not carry its own warhead.

"Hook" is equipped with a simple mechanical sight with a folding frame. Similar devices are used on previous domestic RPGs. The launch of both grenades is carried out by a common trigger that supplies an electrical impulse to the engine igniters. A safety mechanism is provided to ensure the safety of transportation and handling.

RPG-30 on display. Photo Vitalykuzmin.net

The principle of operation of the RPG-30 is quite simple. The grenade launcher brings the product into combat position, finds the target and performs aiming. When you press the trigger, the "Hook" first launches the IG-30 simulator. A fraction of a second later, a PG-30 grenade launches. On approaching the target, the simulator is detected by its active protection complex. KAZ perceives it as a full-fledged threat and strikes at a safe distance.

For a short time after the launch, the KAZ cannot respond to new threats from the same angle - due to interference from flash and smoke, the need to turn the launcher / turret, etc. It is at this moment that a live grenade breaks through the gap in the active defense. Its leading charge triggers dynamic protection, if any, after which the main charge pierces the armor.

The 105 mm PG-30 grenade is capable of fighting well-defended targets. Having broken through the KAZ and DZ, the main charge pierces 600 mm of homogeneous armor. Effective shooting at fortifications is also possible. So, it breaks up to 1,5 m of reinforced concrete or 2 m of brick.

Excess power

The unusual design gives the RPG-30 product special combat capabilities. This grenade is capable of hitting almost any armored fighting vehicles available to Ukrainian formations, incl. in the most protected projections. At the same time, it is easy to see that in a number of situations, the firepower of the "Hook" is even excessive for actual or expected combat missions.

Products NPO "Basalt" at the exhibition. The second from the bottom is a split layout of the "Hook". The PG-30 grenade and the IG-30 simulator are clearly visible. Photo "Rostec"

The fact is that the Ukrainian tank fleet is gradually shrinking, and the enemy has to actively use equipment of other classes. Infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers and armored vehicles are guaranteed to be hit by any domestic anti-tank grenade launchers and grenades, incl. simpler than the RPG-30. In addition, in this case, the ability of the "Hook" to overcome the DZ is simply unnecessary.

The ability of two grenades to deal with active protection also does not find application. Not a single Ukrainian armored vehicle is currently equipped with KAZ, and the appearance of such systems is not expected. In the indefinite future, foreign tanks are promised to be transferred to Ukraine - but they are unlikely to be equipped with active protection. In addition, it should be remembered that DZ is also not widely used on NATO-style armored vehicles. At the same time, a tandem warhead with a high total power will be quite useful for combating any enemy armored vehicles.

Efficiency and prospects

Thus, the Russian army has at its disposal a variety of anti-tank weapons, incl. capable of solving the most complex problems. Thus, a significant part of domestic grenade launchers and grenades is capable of hitting armored vehicles with dynamic protection, and the RPG-30 "Hook" can also overcome active protection.

So far, the Hook product has had to deal with KAZ only in the conditions of the landfill, and it is not clear whether such targets will appear in the future. The tanks remaining in Ukraine do not have such equipment, as well as the promised foreign models. Whether the Russian army will ever have to fight tanks with KAZ is unknown. But in this case, she already has an effective weapon.

A small-diameter projectile exits a fraction of a second earlier, and since the axis of the container does not coincide with the center of mass of the product, the sighting line goes to the right. Then the main charge comes out not in the direction of the target. And it's always such a deviation. And the farther the distance to the target, the stronger the miss. The idea is good, but the whole system is in fact not working. If you really wanted to make such a concept, then you had to make sure that both rockets fired at the same time, but the small projectile was either faster or the main one had to be slowed down in flight. elemental solution. After shooting a small rocket, the recoil takes the second rocket generally past such a target as a tank, and as planned, both rockets should hit the same target the size of a pineapple, otherwise there is not only no point in the second rocket, but Ana takes the main charge away from the target, although if you do homing the second missile to the first ...

The issue is solved in a much simpler and more traditional way - with the condition that the firing process is unique, this was taken into account and training firing is already organized on the ground. Results: from "satisfactory" to "excellent" at the declared ranges.

Bullshit in another. The armor penetration of even 105-mm caliber products is no longer impressive. And 120-130 mm won’t take much with you. It's kind of a dead end.

PS. Recently, an allegedly Wagner tanker stated that they were closer than 2,5 km. and don't fit. It is better to keep silent about the firing range of 105-mm RPG-7 grenades. And the Vampire in the department also looks, to put it mildly, not obvious.

Actually, I would "work" with self-aiming ammunition (SPB) for grenade launchers capable of hitting armored vehicles in the "roof" and sides! Somehow one of the leading techies of the Design Bureau spoke about this (that there are plans to do this ...), but seems to have cheated, radish! In the early 90s, the Russian Federation already had an analogue of the "foreign" NLAW in the form of a prototype of "Autonomy", but "Autonomy" did not go to the troops ... Well, in those years ("the damned nineties" ...) it was It's clear ! But "after" - something ... what kind of sway was going on at the beginning of this century - it's hard to understand ...

I think that a promising grenade launcher will use an impact core and hit armored vehicles from above. In this case, precise aiming is not necessary, only an optical sensor. Shoot in the direction of the tank offhand with excess. And the grenade, rotating, will explode 5-20m above the target, 5-20m to the side of it - it doesn’t matter.
It is possible without rotation, but then you have to aim

That's exactly what I meant! Yes good Although, you can hardly get by with an optical sensor alone! For "reliability" you will need magnetometric and thermal sensors, a miniature laser rangefinder ... "Impact core" is, of course, a must! Be sure to rotate the ammunition! It is worth using a trajectory adjustment! The proposal to have only an "optical sensor" (photocontrast, for example!) Has a "right to exist" as an additional ammunition with limited capabilities (compared to the main option ...), but extremely simplified and cheap!

A laser rangefinder, a turn on the target - all this is superfluous. Just a straight-flying grenade with an impact core. A transparent nose ring through which the lidar shines, for example. In all 360 degrees at an angle of 90 down and slightly forward, 85 degrees. The first beam caught the target - readiness! The second, perpendicular caught - undermining after a couple of meters of flight! You can make a multi-cumulative with 12-16 cores in all directions. Then you can increase the flight speed, range, flatness, and not bother with the speed of rotation. She can be anyone.
The principle is this: the shooter releases a grenade towards the tank, aiming roughly, offhand. The grenade flies from above / from the side + - 50m from the tank. All. Range, wind, target speed, direction .. trees, ravines - it doesn’t matter. Instantly

At an angle to the longitudinal axis of the grenade, of course. The first 85, the second 90 degrees. Flight altitude, vertical horizontal miss will not be important within the fuse sensitivity

No... not too much! In your opinion, alas, it will not work out in a "full-fledged" way! It’s still possible to do without a rangefinder ... I don’t argue, because. guess how! But the "magnetometer" is useful to "identify" "a lot of iron"; and not a model, not a truck ... not a fence, finally! The thermal sensor "indicates" a warm engine in the "pile of iron", which will increase the likelihood of "immobilization "armored targets! A trajectory turn will be necessary with a caliber of anti-tank ammunition less than 120 mm! With a 105-mm grenade, a trajectory turn is desirable! Self-aiming ammunition (SPB) without a trajectory turn (with a "transverse" location of the SPS) "appears" in developments with 120 mm! As for your "readiness - detonation" from laser emitters, this is not necessary; because the moment of detonation is determined by the angular difference between the vectors of the thermal sensor and the vector of the "shock core" plus the fuse's "knowledge" of the speed of movement and rotation of the ammunition!

The nlaw has both a magnet and an optical fuse (many targets are aluminum). So you can get by with less junk. There is no heat in the Swede either. We need a cheap simple shot.
A turn is not needed, even if you shoot without an institution, at 90 degrees, the target will not go further than 20-40m from the point of detonation.
The angular difference between the vectors of the sensor and the impact core is small. Since a grenade can fly at different heights and ranges. And under different trim.
So: I felt the first beam, the second, the vertical one, gave the command to undermine.
It looks like an optical fuse for explosive missiles in the photo elements. Only with its own backlight - after all, the target on the underlying surface must be felt with a laser, lidar, or radio hi

I watched it badly, since you don’t remember the justification of the Comandante (program host). He said that the flash, when the first charge was released, blinded him, and when the "main" charge was already released, the grenade launcher operator had already managed to "take" to the side from the trajectory of the shot. Therefore, misses.

But something tells me that the next version will be with one pipe. When the combat and simulating parts are combined.

I also thought about this ... That is, the "grenade" will look like a tandem ammunition, for example, as for the Vampire RPG ... But instead of a "leader" - an imitator, and the main ammunition - "shock-nuclear"! "Activation" from a non-contact active fuse or from a remotely programmed ...! The use of a "simulator" (maybe with shrapnel ...) and a cumulative "leader" in one "module" (case) is not excluded ...

Why not? Well, add on the PG-29 the face of the leader being shot back in the face. Which a little earlier, before the approach of the main warhead, will force the active protection system of the tank to work.
But this is of course only my couch theorizing. Developers have something else. "What can".

You're digging in the wrong direction.

It is only necessary to ensure the connection of two conventional tubes in parallel and ensure synchronous start. If you want to shoot one at a time, if you want to bang in one gulp.

      So much more versatile.

Of me, a warrior, only "divana". But I don't like the solution with two tubes. It’s not ice to catch on a tai branch or protruding rebar.
Here it is already necessary to listen to practitioners.

On the one hand, equipping with an additional charge complicates and increases the cost of the product, while
Not a single Ukrainian armored vehicle is currently equipped with KAZ, and the appearance of such systems is not expected. In the indefinite future, foreign tanks are promised to be transferred to Ukraine - but they are unlikely to be equipped with active protection.

    obviously it won't be required.
    On the other hand
"Hook" is equipped with a simple mechanical sight with a folding frame.

Maybe it made sense to make the sight more complex and effective, and not to fasten an unclaimed function?

Well, it is possible, as an option! For example, there are grenade launchers with a "sighting barrel" ... the ballistics of a shot (bullets!) coincides with the ballistics of a 105-mm ammunition ... Great and cheap! wink

So the ballistics of the shells and the RPG30 is the same. When he is in a vice laughing And when a manual volley, the leader shakes the arrow, and the second grenade flies anywhere. It makes no sense

so-called "Ryabov Kirill" is probably a fictional character, a pseudonym used by the owners of the site to fill it with content when full-fledged articles from real authors are not enough. There is no budget for royalties or simply no one who wants to write at the moment. Like a clown in a circus, such pseudo-articles simply fill in the gaps, for which we thank them, as the site retains the audience, traffic, and activity in the comments.

Imagine VO without "Ryabov Kirill" - an empty space with rare but interesting publications. Not one site died in such conditions, lost readers.

(all of the above is my personal opinion, I will be pleasantly surprised if Kirill Ryabov exists and is learning to write!)

Absolutely redundant ammunition for the Ukrainian theater. Those foreign tanks that appear there will not be equipped with Trophy active protection. But the remote control of ATGMs is long overdue - the operator should not risk himself while leading the missile to the target!

Yesterday I saw footage of the chronicle of the NWO, where they took out the M109A7 Paladin from the battlefield with a huge opening in the turret. 70 cm in diameter with curved edges inward.
Why did everything fly so I think

Or, really, did reusable grenades appear?

A grenade launcher is a weapon that fires grenades. And for the loss of which .....
And a grenade, incl. reactive, - ammunition, consumables, according to another article passes.

Ukrs do not have active protection and I don’t understand why use such an RPG in the NVO zone so that it gets to the ukras and they use it against our tanks that have active protection? Also selling abroad is stupidity. You sell, for example, to the Arabs, and they sell to Zelensky.

In addition, it should be remembered that DZ is also not widely used on NATO-style armored vehicles. At the same time, a tandem warhead with a high total power will be quite useful for combating any enemy armored vehicles.
I won't be surprised if the "crookers" fit "Contact-1" or "Knife" on "Leo-2A4" and "Challenger". But on the "Leopard-2A6" additional non-explosive protection is installed, for which I hope the "tandem" ammunition will be just right. Well we'll see soon
    In the meantime ...

There is no excess power. A common example is the decommissioning of the 1941 mm ZiS-57 in 2. But then it was urgently needed. And if she were in battle formations in the 42nd, how many panzers would be destroyed additionally.

That's how I remembered it. But there is still a different situation. Then the industry of the USSR was in time trouble. Roughly speaking, the choice was between 2 45s. Which then corresponded to the armor. And one 57 mm. But with a margin. Exaggerated of course.

On the one hand, I do not argue. Economically. On the other hand ... Weapons must be made with a backlog of characteristics for the near future. The economy develops into big losses both materially and in people. That is constantly confirmed historically. By the way, the Germans also saved. They had a main anti-tank 37 mm Pak 35/36 "mallet". The 50 mm Pak 38 was only switched to in 1940.

During the production of one ZiS-2, it was possible to make three ZiS-3 guns. If the ZiS-2 had not been withdrawn from service and replaced by the ZiS-3, then in 1942 Moscow would have already been occupied by the Germans.

Didn't see how far the shot was.
Didn’t it make sense to install at least minimal optics or a collimator sight or, in principle, provide for the possibility of their independent installation .. The goals are supposed to be serious and they will try hard to protect them from grenade launchers.

To use a hook in the SVO RPG-30 is only from the absence of other RPGs. There is no need for a second container with a simulator rocket. It is really superfluous, knocks down the sight for the main grenade and adds extra weight and dimensions to this grenade launcher. In the SVO, RPG-26; 28 are more appropriate.

The question is, will it be enough to break through Leo's lobesnik 2 and 6? On board, yes, but on the forehead? There seems to be no kaza there and dynamic protection too, so 2 grenades will give 800 mm of penetration without dynamic protection.
Here the RPG-28 "Cranberry" gives 900 mm for dynamic protection, which means without it for 1100 mm. Wouldn't it be better to stock up on such an excess thing. You can smack her and Abrash!
