Robotic fish, laser guns and unmanned submarines - the new brainchild of the US Navy
This information was shared with the press by the head of the department of naval research Matthew Klander. According to him, the new laser weapon will be installed on the decks of ships of various classes in a couple of years. Earlier it was reported that the first combat lasers will appear on the US military courts in 2016 year. Apparently, the work goes beyond the plan.
At first, the ships will be equipped with so-called laser prototypes, which by their characteristics will be very close to production models. Rear Admiral Klander himself states that if such a weapon had been considered before, except by fiction of science fiction writers, today only 2 remains in reality until its realization in reality. The rear admiral said that laser weapons on ships would be a powerful gun, the momentum of which would be enough to solve the most ambitious tasks.
At the same time, it does not say how this gun will be fed, because a powerful ship generator is needed to generate a powerful laser pulse. So far the American fleet does not have such generators. Therefore, the problem today is not at all in terms of creating a powerful laser gun, but in the need to generate enough energy for its “shots” from a ship.
Klander believes that logistics can help solve this problem. To do this, you need to determine the dimensions of the gun and what power it will give out the impulse. After that, it is necessary to carry out accounting work in the sense on which ship the gun can be installed on. The Rear Admiral noted that today specialists are actively working on solving this problem. After the first tests it turned out that the laser beam effectively knocks down unmanned aerial vehicles.
Matthew Klander surprised journalists with the fact that he announced the creation of an amazing robot fish BIOSwimmer. This "fish" can perform several tasks at once: from the search for mines and their destruction to the fight against swimmers from special forces.
But this was not the end of the revelation of Rear Admiral. He reported that the US Navy has high hopes for unmanned submarines that can perform tasks during 2 autonomous operation months. The first trial unmanned submarine should go to dive to 2016 year. But an unmanned submarine with autonomy in 30 days will be ready next year.
