B-21 Raider bomber: latest achievements and plans for the future
Air Force and Northrop Grumman are ready for the presentation

The US Air Force and Northrop Grumman have set a date for the official presentation of the first experienced B-21 Raider strategic bomber. On December 2, this car will be shown to the public and, probably, its various features and main technical characteristics will be revealed. At the same time, the prototype aircraft is already ready. It was completed a few months ago, and now it is undergoing preliminary ground tests.

During a year

The development of the B-21 project was completed in 2018-19, and construction of the first prototype aircraft began shortly thereafter. The assembly of the new type of bombers was entrusted to Air Force Plant No. 42 in Palmdale, California, where the serial construction of B-2A aircraft was previously carried out. Subsequently, several following boards were laid in the workshops of the enterprise.

At the end of February 2022, the Air Force reported that six new aircraft were already in various stages of construction in Palmdale. At the same time, the first was already almost ready and was soon to go to the test bench, and the assembly of the sixth started only recently. A few weeks after that, the first Raider was put on a preliminary "calibration".

The first stage of ground tests was completed in early May. During these events, power was supplied to the head prototype from the outside, with the help of which all systems and assemblies were checked. We also made the necessary adjustments and improvements. At this stage, the aircraft received a paint coating.

The development company claimed that in the near future ground tests would move to a new stage. After all the preliminary checks, it was planned to carry out the first start of the engines and re-check the operation of all systems. After that, tests were to begin at the airfield with taxiing and running at different speeds. The launch of such events has not yet been announced.

Also in May, it was reported that the first flight of the experimental B-21 was postponed to the next 2023. At the same time, they promised to hold a public roll-out of the finished aircraft. This event, it was then claimed, was to take place in the coming weeks. However, six months have passed since then, and the bomber has not yet been shown to the public.

The updated plans were revealed in September during the Air Force Association's annual conference. It was announced that the first of the experienced B-21 is already ready, and they plan to show it to the public in December. In connection with this, an official promotional image was released showing the aircraft under the cover.

At the same time, plant No. 42 continues to fulfill the order received. Five more prototypes remain on the stocks at various stages of assembly. From this it follows that the work continues and, apparently, cope with the tasks. At the same time, the second and subsequent boards are not yet ready even for preliminary tests, and mass production is still a matter of the distant future.

Plans for the future

In October, the customer and contractor decided on the exact date of the official demonstration of the new bomber. The first B-21 Raider will be shown to the public on December 2 as part of a special ceremony. The event will take place in Palmdale, at the manufacturing plant.

Immediately after the presentation, the aircraft will be returned to the test base. The exact schedule for further work has not yet been disclosed. From the reports of recent months, it follows that checks on the runway should begin in the near future - so far without flights.

It was previously reported that the first flight of an experienced B-21 could take place before the end of 2022, but now the plans have been revised. The start of flight tests was postponed to the next 2023. The exact or approximate date of the first flight has not yet been reported. However, it is clear that Northrop Grumman has at least two months to prepare for this event. If the project does not encounter unforeseen difficulties, this may be enough for all procedures and activities.

Due to the complexity of the project, full-fledged tests of the bomber will take several years and will be completed in the middle of this decade. The first board is planned to be handed over to the customer in 2025-26. or later - if any difficulties arise. In the same time frame, Northrop Grumman and plant #42 should start mass production.

Bombers in action

According to the published schedule, the first production B-21 aircraft will enter the combat units of the US Air Force after 2026-27. By the beginning of the thirties, it is planned to form the first squadron and bring it to the stage of initial operational readiness.

Aircraft model in a real hangar

The general plans for the production of new bombers are well known. Back in 2016, after signing a development contract, the Pentagon announced their desire to build at least a hundred aircraft. In the future, such plans were refined. So, 80 units were called the minimum allowable quantity, and if additional funding is available, the series can be increased to 140-145 units.

The production of at least 80-100 aircraft of a new type can continue for several decades; the estimated time frame for the construction of such a series has not yet been called. At the same time, the new B-21s in large numbers will seriously upgrade the long-range fleet. aviation US Air Force. With their help, they will completely replace the existing B-1B aircraft (45 units in service) and B-2A (20 units). In addition, a partial replacement of the older and well-deserved B-52H (58 units) is not ruled out.

The new type of bombers will be operated in existing units and formations, which are currently armed with B-1B and B-2A. In early 2020, the Air Force showed what such a service would look like. They published photo collages of Raider aircraft in the existing hangars at Deyss, Ellsworth and Whiteman AFBs. In one of these “pictures”, a promising aircraft was depicted against the background of combatant B-1Bs.

Intentions and results

The B-21 Raider long-range strategic missile-carrying bomber is one of the most important promising developments for the US Air Force. With the help of this project, in the medium term, it is planned to upgrade the critical component of the air fleet and bring it to the required level. For this reason, the B-21 project is given all the necessary attention - and some of its successes are regularly reported.

To date, the customer and performers have created a new reason for pride and optimistic statements. The construction of the first experimental bomber has been completed, and it has successfully passed the initial testing and tuning in the conditions of the factory floor. This allows you to prepare the aircraft for full-fledged tests at the airfield. In addition, the prototype is ready for the first demonstration to the general public.

Recent ones news show that so far the B-21 project as a whole is proceeding in accordance with the plans and wishes of the customer. However, it is not without difficulties. It is likely that it was some difficulties or problems that recently forced us to revise the work schedule and move the presentation of the aircraft by several months, and postpone the first flight to 2023.

Nevertheless, such difficulties have been overcome, and the exact date of the first show has already been set. Soon after that, having completed the necessary work, they can also approve the schedule for airfield tests, incl. date of first flight. However, only the year of the first flight has been determined so far, which leaves a lot of room for maneuver in accordance with newly emerging circumstances.

Reasons for optimism

Thus, the process of creating a promising strategic bomber B-21 Raider is gradually moving towards completion. A few years ago, Northrop Grumman developed a project and began building several prototype aircraft at once, and now we are talking about rolling out and presenting the first of them. All this is cause for optimism.

However, only one prototype has been built so far, and it is only passing the first tests. It is necessary to carry out a lot of other work and activities that will confirm the compliance of the finished aircraft with the wishes of the customer and the requirements for operation in the Air Force. Whether it will be possible to cope with them within the approved schedule is a big question. But the Pentagon is sure of success.

There are more questions than answers in the article!
    - how much does this miracle cost (its predecessor B-2A broke all records for the cost of 1 aircraft - $ 2,1 billion)
    - what is the radius of action, will the "novelty" be able to overtake the B-52 in range (16 km maximum, 000 km radius)?
    - what is the payload, will the "novelty" be able to overtake the B-52 (31 tons) in terms of carrying capacity?
    - won't the "miracle" repeat the fate of the F-35 due to "shortcomings" ??

    very interesting!
    let's see! bully

If it will be like with the F-35, then I have very bad news for us. They were produced 865+ pieces (more than we have fighters in service, in principle, 1,5 times), block 4 will be put into production this year, the problems of block 1/2 have long been resolved in block 3, the queue for them has already exceeded 2030 year.
And there will always be problems and cuts in the production of any high-tech products. Don't worry so much about them.
The project includes developments on F-35/117, B-2/52 and other research projects.
The idea is simply to make a cheaper and simpler B-2, based on serial solutions. Yes, with a loss of range and payload, but now this is not important. They put two engines from the F-35, avionics from it. Everything in the series is relatively cheap. A new airframe is being planned, using developments from earlier stealth fighter/bombers. Add systems from current bombers. All. Quickly, relatively cheaply, we get a mass production platform.
No one is decommissioning the B-52, on the contrary, they are remotorizing extending their service until the middle of the 21st century. The B-21 is a completely different class car.

        ---They were released 865+ pieces
of these, a third are completely under-aircraft for vertical take-off. The rest, with a virtual ban on cruising supersonic, make this product practically useless compared to 4th generation fighters. A kind of flying stool aka F-117

And what's wrong with VTOL? No runways needed for use, in wartime can be a big plus. Maybe just such a moment is not important to the States, but to everyone else ... And in modern conflicts, when close maneuverable air combat almost does not occur, it will not be much inferior in battle to conventional fighters, the same Harriers showed themselves well at one time

Nothing really other than the price. The combat radius is 900+ km, for version A 1200+, the combat load is 6,8 tons versus 8,1 tons, but this is with an external suspension, the internal one is the same. The price is 101 million against $78 million, and maintenance is more expensive. TTX is not much worse for advanced features.
The topic that the F-35 is badly dispersed by the enemies of Russia, whether it is realized or not is the second question. They are trying to reassure the public, saying that it’s not scary that our enemies have 5th generation fighters more than we just have 2 times more fighters. By the way, in total, the NATO bloc has about 8-10 times more fighters than ours.

Well, yes, even though after the official end of the Cold War, the development and renewal of the Air Force fleet, and indeed the Armed Forces of the NATO countries, slowed down significantly, in comparison with the plans for the late 80s and the previous pace of development and adoption of new types of weapons and military equipment, nevertheless it also went on in the 90s, when we stood firmly in place, if not going back. If the Mikoyan Bureau had brought it up to the Yak-141, 1.44 series in due time, even with the difference in the budgets of the Ministry of Defense, the troops would now have mass-produced 5th generation fighters and supersonic VTOL aircraft ...

And the United States has about one and a half to two dozen B-1Bs in storage and hundreds of various fighters are stored in the Arizona desert.
Moreover, with a resource and fresh years of release.
The Americans themselves and their NATO partners probably won't need most of it.
So it’s not difficult for Ukraine to roll out a hundred or two or three?

Not difficult, of course, but why should they fight? They have 4 categories of military personnel.
                1. Those serving in the Air Force, the ILC, the Navy, the Army
                2. Army National Guard
                Air National Guard
                3. Regular reserves:
                Army Reserve
                Navy Reserve
                Marine Corps Reserve
                Air Force Reserve
                Coast Guard Reserve
                4. Stores.

The regular units and the National Guard have equipment. For reservists (this is approximately 6-8 million military personnel), it is also necessary to keep a reserve of equipment. This technique must be relatively old, because 39 days of service per year of reservists is only enough to maintain skills. Not to mention reserves. Accordingly, it is impossible to squander equipment and weapons, everything is planned.

I wrote incorrectly about the European members of NATO, they have about 1500 4/5 generation fighters. Approximately 1900 in the USA. Total 3400 4/5 generation fighters.
According to The Military Balance 2021, we had 226 - Su-30/35, 364 - MiG-29/31, Su-27/33 (how many of them can basically take off is unknown).
Now we have an estimated ~350 fighters. There should be more than 100 old models.
                        NATO: ~3400

Su-33 is not a bad aircraft with good flight characteristics.
But its equipment remained in 1991 and is approximately equal to the Su-27P.
It was not upgraded to the level of the Su-27SM.
And the very last plane came from the factory in the late 90s.
Of the Su-27s, the youngest are only 12-14 Crimean Su-27SM3s, which are produced in 2010-11.
                        Less than a hundred Su-30SMs remained with losses;
                        Less than a hundred Su-35S.
                        Everything else is outdated technology.

Our radar / air defense systems do not see our own drones of mossy years of production, which fly twice to the same strategic airfield.
By the way, everyone forgot something, as in the first (!) days of the war, the Ukrainian Tochka-U destroyed, in Rostov, it seems, a fighter at the airfield, along with several people.
And about invisible (for our radar / air defense) Ukrainian helicopters that were bombed in Belgorod and calmly returned home, they somehow don’t remember something.
And yes, wonderful air defense, impenetrable, like a general's foreheads.

And why do they need to worry about the flight range, why do they need a 16k range? For them, it's not important right now. The United States, if you are not aware, has more than 400 tankers and a network of base air bases around the world. They can easily assemble and fly to any place, with any forces they require.

won't the "miracle" repeat the fate of the F-35 due to "shortcomings" ??

This "miracle" is mass-produced very quickly. Several hundred are in service, all over the world. And orders are a wagon with a trolley. The Americans will master the new bomber-experience. -They have a huge military budget, and there is a machine. And so far no one refuses a dollar! hi

Pre-production, because it cannot pass military tests, there are no 25 identical F-35s in the world, because all of them are prototypes from pre-production batches hi
And for the price just here - no one is worried, it was in the USA that they resumed production of the F-15 and F-16 in a panic. so that at least something could actually fly.
PCS: regarding "a lot of money". Mind but not enough. Biden, for example, said that Lockheed did not have enough chips for missiles, by the way, about microchips from washing machines - in general, BMW said that it was cheaper for them to pick out chips from washing machines.
And more about prices - Indonesia was bent on refusing to purchase Su, it was planned to shove the F-15. If they don’t push it, they don’t push it, it turns out that the minimum price at which they can sell is 250 million apiece, there is a crisis in the aviation industry - and prices for used models are rising. And for others, there is no money at all.

With your lips, yes, drink honey. It would be nice if that's how it was. Practice shows, however, very different results.
P.S. I don’t see a real problem with releasing a lot more planes much faster. In fact, it will be more difficult to make passenger aircraft, there are more requirements for them, although the design, in my perception, is the most primitive.

As a platform for testing new technologies, yes, not bad.
As far as I know, the airframe of this scheme can only be controlled with the help of an on-board computer.
There was a video of a Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk crashing over the runway on takeoff due to a failure of the on-board computer.

The development of the bomber is exactly the same. how many Su-57s, while there are no aircraft yet wink And all because in the sawmill they feed Lochkid's slanderous project, and now the budget is cut mainly by Raytheon))) So until Northrop pushes his puppet through, there are no "reasons for optimism". But when it pushes through, the whole world will know that this is a child prodigy, and it will be completely ready in the shortest possible time, if necessary, new wings will be stuck on the B-52 on Chinese glue, the tail will be cut off and photographed in flight - and do not care what after photographing will slam

Nevertheless, only one thing is indicative - to what extent the "elites" are ready to mobilize in the shortest possible time and begin to produce weapons and ammunition at a loss. Whoever they mobilize from, and will not wait "maybe it will carry over", he will win.

It's not just a matter of stealth there, there are rumors that this will be the first aircraft with an active protection aviation complex. As always, Americans are trendsetters. Why was it so difficult to create an analogue of Darpa? It seems that they did the FPI (Fund for Advanced Study) back in 2012, but there is no sense. Darpa is not engaged in development, they simply create concepts, such as GPS, and for them they systematize and coordinate R&D of all universities, institutes, scientific departments of corporations. What's the problem with doing the same?

Because they have the concept of "inventor" and "designer", and we only have a "designer", so an incredible number of inventors either leave or sit here, but everyone does not care about them and their promising developments from a high bell tower - not a "designer" same. As a result, they are forced to either sit and quietly tinker with their ideas, spending family budgets, or share ideas on forums and quietly grumble at them.

Because it requires people with a certain mindset. The United States has been "vacuuming" such people all over the world for decades. For enterprising and smart there will not regret anything. Even if 9 out of 10 fail, the remaining 10% will give a breakthrough result

We get just a slightly improved B2 + plus all the previously ignored Wishlist and nothing more, and this, please pay close attention, is an aircraft that is planned to be in service until the end of the century. The application is not very, well, well, let's see what will be presented as a result.

Those who are fond of super weapons always end up like Hitler, in wars they always win cheap, mass weapons. Well, it’s better for us to let them spend money on this weapon, there will be less left for another. It’s bad that we are also starting to get involved in "weapons of a different principle of operation"
