Means of deterrence on the western borders: the new Regional grouping of troops (forces) of the Union State
Meeting of Russian servicemen in Belarus
In order to protect the western borders of the Union State, the Russian and Belarusian armies began the formation of the Regional grouping of troops (forces). To date, some organizational measures have been taken, and the transfer of formations and units employed in the new formation has also begun. The first members of the Group have already begun to fulfill their tasks.
Decision is made
The situation in Eastern Europe remains difficult and continues to threaten the western borders of the Union State of Russia and Belarus. In this regard, the military and political leadership is taking the necessary measures. Thus, it is proposed to respond to a military threat by appropriate means.
On October 6, Minister of Defense of the Republic of Belarus Viktor Khrenin announced his readiness to respond to provocations of a potential enemy on any part of the border. In addition, measures are being taken in the field of collective security. Thus, the Regional Grouping of Troops (Forces) or the RGV(S) of the Union State is ready to deploy and defend the borders.
On October 10, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced the next step in this direction. During negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a decision was made to deploy the RGV(S). According to A. Lukashenko, these measures correspond to the current level of threats. At the same time, he urged not to escalate the situation.
Goals and objectives
On October 14, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus spoke in detail about the existing threats and challenges, the answer to which is the new grouping. The official statement recalled that over the past few years, military construction has been underway in the Baltic countries and Poland, aimed at increasing the potential of NATO. In the regions near the Belarusian borders, new formations with modern offensive weapons are being formed.
All this indicates a growing threat to the Republic of Belarus and the Union State. In order to ensure parity in the western direction, it was decided to create a RGV (S) on the Belarusian territory. It includes units and formations of the army of Belarus and separate formations of the armed forces of Russia.
Arrival of the Russian military
The Belarusian Ministry of Defense calls the RGV(S) an exclusively defensive structure. In the near future, the main task of this Group will be to strengthen the protection of the state border of Belarus, aimed at reducing military activity in neighboring countries.
This maintains a certain level of transparency. So, on October 17, during a briefing by the Ministry of Defense, Assistant Minister Colonel Valery Revenko said that all the necessary information about the RGV (C) was transferred to accredited military representatives of foreign states. They were told the order of arrival and the location of the formations, as well as plans for operational and combat training.
In the process of being deployed
The process of redeployment and deployment of the formations included in the RGV(C) started almost immediately after the announcement. Already on October 15, the Belarusian Ministry of Defense announced the arrival of the first echelons with Russian military personnel. The hosts organized a warm welcome with traditional bread and salt.
The next day, the Belarusian Defense Ministry again announced the arrival of trains with Russian personnel and equipment. In particular, they showed platforms with cars of different types and purposes. In addition, on October 16, the transfer began aviation component of the group. The first Russian planes and helicopters flew to Belarusian airfields.
The process of transferring units and formations with subsequent deployment at temporary deployment points continues to this day, but will soon be completed. At the same time, the units that were the first to arrive on Belarusian territory have already deployed and are starting to carry out their tasks. However, the details of such work have not yet been reported.
Forces and means
The Russian and Belarusian sides have not yet disclosed all the details of the ongoing processes. At the same time, some information about the Regional Grouping has already been announced. There will likely be new posts of one kind or another soon.
The total number of RGV(C) is still unknown. The Belarusian side has already stated that approx. 9 thousand military personnel from Russia. In all likelihood, the Republic of Belarus will provide comparable or larger forces. Accordingly, the total number of the Grouping may reach the level of 20-25 thousand people.
The RGV(S) includes a ground and air force component represented by the respective branches of the two armies. It is not known what weapons and equipment the Russian military personnel took with them. So far, only utility vehicles have been shown; combat vehicles or weapon were not included in the frame.
What exactly has not yet been shown is a big question. It is quite possible that motorized rifle and tank connections with appropriate equipment and capabilities. The grouping can be reinforced with tanks, artillery, incl. reactive, as well as other means for various purposes.
According to press reports, the aviation unit of the Group already includes several MiG-31 fighter-interceptors from the Russian Aerospace Forces. Probably, other types of aircraft will also work with them, both from Russia and from local Belarusian units. It is also possible the participation of army aviation, represented by helicopters of various types.
Limited contingent
Thus, on the borders of the Union State of Russia and Belarus, a new military formation of a sufficiently large number is being created. The new RGV(S) is seen as a response to military construction in the near abroad and will have to be on duty in a potentially dangerous direction. She will have to deter a potential enemy with her presence and, if appropriate situations arise, take action.
From the published data it follows that the western borders will be guarded by an international interspecific grouping built on the basis of heterogeneous units of the ground forces. It will be supported by combat units of the aerospace and air forces of the two countries.
It is obvious that the number, equipment, combat capabilities and other parameters of the new RGV(S) are determined in accordance with existing and perceived threats. This means that the grouping, in terms of its potential, is at least not inferior to the forces and means of a potential enemy in the western direction. As a consequence, it will indeed become an effective deterrent.
Pay attention to the pace of deployment. It is reported that it takes only a few days to transfer all the involved units and formations of the Russian army. Similar tasks of a logistical nature have been repeatedly worked out in the course of various exercises, incl. on Belarusian territory. In addition, the well-established transportation system is currently being used to support the Special Operation in Ukraine.
If necessary, the logistics potential of the army and railways can be used to strengthen the RGV (S). In a matter of days, it will be able to increase to the required level. At the same time, it will be equipped with all the necessary weapons and equipment, and will also receive the required air support. The result of this will be the achievement of combat capability corresponding to the emerging situation.
clear signal
The observed events are of great importance for the security of the two countries and are of great interest. For the first time in stories A large formation is being created of the Union State, which for the first time will have to protect the borders and protect the territory not only as part of the exercises. This time it is about the real deterrence of NATO's Eastern European forces.
The new Regional grouping of troops (forces) is quite large and has a serious potential, and can also be quickly reinforced by other troops of the two countries. The appearance of a Group with such capabilities should be considered by foreign states as a clear and distinct signal of the readiness of the Union State to protect its interests. Whether the recipients will understand this signal is unknown.
