International exercises
News about the conduct of the fleet exercises appeared against the backdrop of the international maneuvers CHIRU-2022, held from January 18 to 22 in the Gulf of Oman (Arabian Sea). They were attended by a ship detachment of the Russian Pacific Fleet, as well as pennants of the Chinese and Iranian Navy. In total, 14 ships and vessels of different classes were involved in the maneuvers.
During the CHIRU-2022 exercises, the ships of the three countries practiced joint maneuvering and patrolling. A search was also carried out for surface targets, followed by their defeat by artillery fire. A training search and rescue operation took place. In the final part of the maneuvers, the military of the three countries trained in the release of a ship conditionally seized by pirates.
Then Russian and Chinese ships were involved in the exercise "Peaceful Sea-2022". Without leaving the waters of the Arabian Sea, they again worked out joint actions in solving problems of various kinds. In particular, they conducted a training session on transporting a conditional wounded man from a Russian ship to a Chinese ship for assistance.
After the "Peaceful Sea", the ships of the Pacific Fleet continued their long-distance voyage. The Ministry of Defense reports that in the coming weeks they will come to the Mediterranean Sea. There they will unite with detachments from other fleets, as a result of which an inter-naval grouping will appear to conduct new major exercises. In particular, since January 15, a group of ships of the Baltic Fleet has been moving to the place of maneuvers.
The maneuvers have begun
The previously announced exercises of different fleets began in recent days. So, on January 26, the Ministry of Defense reported that the forces and troops of the Northern Fleet had entered the maneuvers. Together with the Arctic expeditionary group, they will solve various combat training tasks. Up to 30 ships, ships and submarines, 20 aircraft and 140 units are involved in the exercises of the Northern Fleet. ground equipment, as well as 1200 military personnel.
During the exercises in the Arctic, combat training tasks will be solved for the protection and defense of the communications of the Northern Sea Route, the garrisons of the Northern Fleet and other objects. Ships and coastal units will work out issues of interaction, incl. when solving practical problems. Various tactics and methods of warfare will be tested.
Also on Wednesday, they announced the start of the exercises of the Black Sea Fleet. More than 20 pennants left the ports of Novorossiysk and Sevastopol and went to designated sea ranges. In the near future, they were supposed to arrive in the indicated areas and begin combat training work.
The Ministry of Defense reported that on the way to the training grounds, ships and boats would conduct exercises on safe maneuvering in areas with intensive shipping, work out the organization of air defense and perform other tasks. Then the active phase of maneuvers should begin with a different range of tasks, with firing, etc.
On the same day, exercises of the Baltic Fleet began. Two dozen ships of the Baltic Fleet entered the sea ranges. On January 26, firing took place with the participation of small missile and small anti-submarine ships. They worked out the fight against surface and air targets. In addition, the ship's group carried out the setting and neutralization of a training minefield.
At the same time, they launched the exercises of coastal troops. The marines of the Baltic Fleet were alerted and marched to the Khmelevka training ground. On the way, a mock enemy attacked the convoy, but the personnel successfully repelled the attack. At the indicated training ground, the Marine Corps units deployed and prepared to defend the coast from enemy landings.
In the Mediterranean
In a few days, major exercises in the Mediterranean are to begin. Two dozen ships and vessels from all major fleets will take part in them. According to the foreign and domestic press, the ships of the Baltic and Northern fleets have already passed Gibraltar. Also expected is the imminent arrival of the Pacific Fleet detachment, which previously participated in international maneuvers. After the completion of the current events, Black Sea sailors will also arrive at the exercise site.
On January 27, the Izvestia publication, citing sources in the Ministry of Defense, reported that the plan for exercises in the Mediterranean had already been drawn up and approved. The collection of ships participating in the exercises will end in early February, and after that the events themselves will start. The plan provides for the development of joint maneuvering in different conditions, the search for and destruction of various targets. Episodes with search and rescue operations are also planned.
Atlantic discontent
One of the future exercises will take place in the North Atlantic Ocean, 240-250 km from the coast of Ireland. Russia notified the Irish authorities of this. Soon the head of the Foreign Ministry of Ireland said that his state does not welcome such maneuvers. Other statements about Russia's unacceptable plans, aggressive behavior, etc. also followed.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, represented by Ambassador to Ireland Yuri Filatov, said that foreign authorities have no reason to worry about the planned exercises. Such events are held regularly, not only by the Russian Navy, but also by the Navy of other countries - and never cause any problems.
It should be noted that the exact dates, composition of the participants and other features of the future exercises that worry Ireland have not yet been announced. They will probably become known in the near future, before the start of the maneuvers or immediately after they start.
Service continues
The process of maintaining the combat readiness of the navy implies the regular conduct of various exercises. Ships of all fleets and units of coastal troops regularly go on maneuvers. Depending on the tasks set, the exercises are held near native shores or in remote areas.
In the light of this practice, the events of recent days and weeks do not appear unusual or unexpected. The Navy, carrying out the Armed Forces Training Plan, is taking all the necessary measures. However, this time, several rather large exercises are taking place at once in one period, which naturally attracts attention.
During the current and future exercises scheduled for January and February, the Russian Navy will test its capabilities and work out new techniques and methods of warfare or other operations. In addition, he will demonstrate his combat capability, which is important in the current confrontation in the international arena. However, "signals" for a potential enemy are of secondary importance, and the main thing in maneuvers is the training of personnel for the benefit of the fleet as a whole.
