Technique, tools and techniques. Development of the Russian Airborne Forces in 2021

27

The continuous process of renovation and development of the Russian airborne forces continues. Units and subunits regularly receive promising materiel and equipment, and are also constantly studying and looking for new methods and techniques of tactical actions. As a result of such events, the combat effectiveness of the Airborne Forces is constantly growing, and this is confirmed by the ongoing exercises.

Results of the year

On December 6, Krasnaya Zvezda published an interview with the deputy commander of the Airborne Forces, Major General Anatoly Kontsev. He revealed both general renewal processes and individual measures of this kind. In addition, the main results obtained for the year are named.

The main goal of combat training and other processes this year was still to further improve their performance, as well as to develop the Airborne Forces as the main component of the Rapid Reaction Force. Such tasks are solved by obtaining modern materiel, mastering new tactics and methods, as well as by constantly conducting exercises of various scales.

So, this year more than 3 thousand different combat training events were held. Of these, about 2,5 thousand accounted for live firing and tactical exercises. In addition, the Airborne Forces took part in the major maneuvers Zapad-2021 and Interaction-2021.

Modern technology

According to reports from the recent past, in 2021, various airborne units received regular consignments of modern equipment and weapons. First of all, these are BMD-4M airborne combat vehicles and BTR-MDM armored personnel carriers. Other types of armored vehicles, automotive equipment, etc. are also supplied. New means of landing are being mastered.

Parachute systems of new types are already being tested in practice. So, as part of one of the exercises this year, the Tula Airborne Force parachute landing of a full battalion on a BMD-4M using modern means.

Much attention is paid to control systems and other means. The Airborne Forces is already using the Andromeda-D automated control system, and now it is being integrated with similar complexes of the ground forces. The same projects are being implemented to integrate the ACS of the Airborne Forces into the control loops of military districts.

The supply and development of unmanned aerial vehicles continues. aviation intelligence complexes. Also, the development of means of electronic warfare is being carried out, designed to cover the airborne forces in battle. In addition, research is being conducted to improve their combat strength and organizational structure.

Preparation tools

In order to improve the indicators of personnel training, modern training aids of various kinds are being introduced. For this year, it was planned to build new facilities and supply various training complexes. Plans of this kind are almost completely fulfilled, and the last samples will be received in the near future.

For the Tula airborne unit this year, a new Kolomensky training ground was completed and equipped. In the interests of the Ivanovo compound, the Blue Sedge object is being built. The Seltsy training ground in the Ryazan region was modernized - an Army Tactical Shooting Center appeared there, which was already used for holding international competitions.

During the year, 24 sets of polygon equipment with 400 technical means were received. One of the most popular were the "Tankodrom" kits for training in driving combat vehicles: 11 units were delivered. For the first time, simulators for driving and fire training of BMD-4M and BTR-MDM crews were obtained. Two such complexes are already operating at the Ryazan School, and two more will appear at the Omsk Training Center by the end of the year.

New tricks

During the 2021 exercise, the Airborne Forces held a number of events for the first time. So, within the framework of "West-2021" for the first time, a parachute landing of a full battalion of BMD-4M was carried out. Also, for the first time, they worked out a massive night landing on an unfamiliar site. In a similar episode, for the first time, an airborne hospital with all the necessary components was dropped and deployed.

New tactics have been tested by practice. New troop formations were practiced, such as the "strike mobile echelon" and the mobile reserve. We also tested the potential of a mobile strike echelon when interacting with an airborne assault battalion. The airborne assault units also interacted with the army aviation. Helicopters effectively solved the tasks of transferring and supporting paratroopers in different conditions.

UAVs of various types have been supplying the Airborne Forces for a long time. As reported, the experience of their operation is constantly being studied, and on its basis new methods and techniques of application are created. However, specific ideas and tactical solutions were not named. The situation is similar in the field of electronic warfare. This year, new examples of the use of electronic warfare have been worked out, the essence of which, however, has not been disclosed.

New designs and ideas are tested by the engineering units of the Airborne Forces. This year, we tested, studied and introduced a new method of overcoming minefields into the training system of airborne assault formations. It provides for making passages in barriers up to 200 m deep using the so-called. sweeping groups. A new element of the combat / marching order of engineering units has been created, called the mobility support detachment.

Research and practical activities in the field of troop protection continue. Various options for field fortification are being improved and tested during exercises. Also this year, for the first time, they tested the option of covering the troops with the help of false heat targets, distracting the controlled weapon the adversary.

Plans for the future

In an interview for Krasnaya Zvezda, Major General A. Kontsevoy notes that the command of the Airborne Forces has collected and summarized a large amount of materials about the events of the year. Now this data will be carefully studied, and the conclusions drawn from the basis will affect future plans for the development of troops, combat training programs, etc.

The first results of such events will show themselves in the near future - already in the new academic and calendar year. The command plans to continue all the processes already begun, aimed at maintaining and increasing the combat capability of the troops. The construction of facilities will continue, new models of equipment and auxiliary systems are expected, improved tactics will be created and tested, etc.

Thus, the level of equipment of the Airborne Forces with modern models will remain at the required level or gradually increase, having a positive effect on the indicators of combat effectiveness. In addition, increased attention to personnel training issues, implemented in the form of new training grounds, training facilities, simulators and permanent exercises of various levels and scales, will also contribute to them.

By now, the airborne troops have become one of the most efficient components of the Russian armed forces. They also acquired the status of the basis of the Rapid Reaction Force and confirm it during all inspections carried out. According to the results of the completed year of study and the ending calendar year, the indicators and capabilities of the Airborne Forces have significantly increased - and created the basis for future growth.

Another would be to bring the number of divisions up to the allied indicator - 7 and / or ensure genuine mobility by forming our own military aviation structure.

and besides the Airborne Forces, no one defends the homeland? simple infantry makes it more reliable and cheaper, which is important, and without any show-off

So the Airborne Forces actually already ... the infantry. When was the last time a parachute landing was carried out there in a combat situation?
In Afghanistan, the 345th Guards Rifle Regiment, following the results of the first battles, was generally reorganized into infantry states. In all conflicts of the Russian Federation, the Airborne Forces used the VTA only for transferring to the theater of operations (and even then not always - the 7th Guards Airborne Forces arrived on 08.08.08 by rail). And then the Airborne Forces fought like an ordinary light motorized infantry.

Only infantry with scanty staffs and aluminum equipment. Moreover, the most well-trained and motivated infantry - but with the worst equipment.

This is the next question arising from the previous one. Even two questions.
          1. If the Airborne Forces for the last 60 years have been used exclusively as an elite airborne motorized infantry with landing airborne assault, then why fully equip the Airborne Forces with parachute landing equipment? Isn't it easier to leave one airborne "airfield capture battalion" in the division, and re-equip the rest with more secure equipment - at the cost of abandoning parachute landing capability?
          2. If the Airborne Forces have been used for the last 60 years solely as a means of reinforcing ground forces in threatened directions, is it not worth strengthening their staffing? So that it does not happen that the units of the Airborne Forces that have arrived for reinforcement themselves require reinforcement, while taking away the equipment and l / s from those who were supposed to be reinforced.

And the most important question driving a nail into the coffin of the concept of full parachute airborne landing is "and who will drop all this wealth?". And then we always love to paint the bright prospects of the Airborne Forces, leaving behind the scenes the state of the VTA. Like, in day D the paratroopers and equipment will grow wings and independently stretch in shoals to the West. smile
In fact, even the mighty Air Force of the USSR, taking into account the mobilization of Aeroflot's aircraft, could land one airborne division with equipment and supplies. And now, in the place of those air divisions, at best, there are air regiments.

Everything is correct. In my humble opinion, as part of the Airborne Forces - 4 airborne brigades (1 baht for a BMD, 1 infantry baht for light vehicles, 1 baht for an infantry fighting vehicle, a tank baht, a D-30 division) at the disposal of district commanders, 1 airborne division (2 infantry battalions, 1 airborne battalion, artillery regiment, anti-aircraft regiment, tank battalion) in the RGVK. Everything else - nafig to the garden. We have a shortage of competent officers and soldiers in the infantry, and it is the infantry that must fight.

In general, yes - I definitely cannot imagine a landing in a collision with any of the most probable enemy. With noneshny air defense - transports, not just to the point of disembarkation - will not reach the front line .. Against whom are they targeted then?

The most expensive type of troops at the moment is the Navy, a lot of money has been poured in, and at the exit there are a bunch of useless pelvis with rare exceptions. And the Airborne Forces, although they did not change the name, have long been a mobile reserve that can be dropped in the near rear on their territory with all the equipment. There are no bad ones to fly to the front line or to the enemy, it was said about this already fifteen years ago.

useless pelvis is basically what is left of the USSR (especially Kuzya), and also MRK built in the hope of DRMSD and senseless udk ... but I think a sane person understands the importance of RPCS and APL, and the rest for the Navy is being built a little and economically

I look forward to deploying Russian airborne troops on a small scale in Syria to test equipment, especially new equipment, and tactics, especially new tactics.

For other branches of the Russian Armed Forces, the benefits of such a deployment were obvious and helped them improve. It is highly likely that the Russian airborne forces will also start delaying and similar rotations while trying to find the same improvements.

It is highly likely that the Russian airborne forces will analyze their material base and tactics in accordance with common standards for all Russian Armed Forces.

In the longer term, the evolution of Russian ground forces will lead to two options that are likely to be combined.

1.-) Development of new materials that must comply with the general standards of the Russian Armed Forces of that time, including both ground-based and air-based materials.

2.-) Modernization by robotization of material that eventually falls under the standards of the Russian Armed Forces, including again both ground and air based.

Over time, the proportion of unmanned technologies in the Airborne Forces will become one of the highest among all combat arms.

(Automatically translated from English. Below is the original commentary in English)

Oh you-I-I, what smart strategists here ... They don't need airborne forces !!!! people completely flew off the coils! Airborne forces are required. The Airborne Forces in Russia are the best and are being improved without interruption. The armament of the Russian paratroopers is the best that has no analogues and is still expected to be even better ... for example Sprut-SDM1. So there is no need to blow in your ears about the unnecessary and useless.

I'll start right away with an analogy. It turns out that the Europeans did not need the nuclear industry and nuclear power plants, and they were expended and reset to zero. Today, asses are freezing and there is not enough electricity - they take their heads. So it will be with the Airborne Forces if under the knife .... And the Airborne Forces is, first of all, instant delivery and response ... you cannot deliver quickly with a steam locomotive.

"And the Airborne Forces is, first of all, instant delivery and response."
There is such a thing, air defense is called, if it is delivered to someone else's territory, and if it is delivered to its own, anti-aircraft missile systems and dynamite on the plane. and in order to react instantly, you need to instantly give the order, and with this we have strained in recent years. while they attend to it, until they seriously attend to it again - the steam locomotive will still be faster and cheaper

mobile reserve. as already mentioned in one of the comments above. and as for elitism (show-off, as you put it), it strives for this, to be the best, any unit of the armed forces should: on land, at sea and in the air.

isn't this army reserve costing too much? with this money it is better to equip the infantry, there is more benefit. and if anyone wants to react instantly, put an infantry battalion with standard weapons on the plane, and take it where necessary

I don’t know, I didn’t consider how much more expensive, if you have calculations, we will be happy to familiarize ourselves with it.
if the infantry is trained to be a mobile reserve, then it will no longer be quite infantry, or not at all infantry.

I do not really understand the whining of some commentators about the uselessness of the Airborne Forces.
Almost 90% of the airborne forces practiced by the airborne forces is a quick transfer and deployment by landing, rather than parachute-landing method.
It goes without saying that journalists and couch warriors tend to think that the Airborne Forces are using the exception of Airborne Assault.
Which is fundamentally not so long ago.
And it is the airborne assault that is shown, because there is a beautiful picture, people are flying in the air, equipment is effectively landing and so on.

Trying to evaluate the tactics of the Airborne Forces by looking at the most spectacular shots on TV is like thinking that military pilots all day do nothing but fly airplanes, although this, God forbid, is 150 hours a YEAR on average in a hospital, depending on the type of aviation , location and other things.

Think of the Airborne Forces as ultra-mobile easy infantry.
See how they were used in 8.8.8.
Is there someone who jumped with parachutes? Of course not.

Commentators are not whining about the uselessness of the Airborne Forces. Commentators express some bewilderment at the ever-increasing discrepancy between how the airborne forces are built and armed, and their real tasks.
For example, if the Airborne Forces are used as ultra-mobile light infantry, which uses aircraft only for transferring to the theater of operations, and then fights along with the line infantry, then why fully arm the Airborne Forces aluminum cansin which protection has been sacrificed for parachute drop capability - a feature that has only been used in training exercises over the past 60 years? Moreover, in case of refusal to drop landing, it will be possible to strengthen the protection of the BMD without increasing the total mass of equipment loaded into the aircraft - due to the monstrous parachute platform. Or why simplify the airborne forces as much as possible, practically depriving them of artillery and air defense - if then on the spot you have to additionally strengthen the paratroopers, taking away this very artillery and air defense from the infantry, which the paratroopers supposedly had to strengthen?
The main complaint about the Airborne Forces is that their construction is taking place under the concept "full parachute landing", and application - under the concept"line infantry reinforcement forces“Moreover, the apologists for full parachute landing are not stopped even by the fact that the forces of our military aviation are not enough to land at least one airborne division of the regular staff.

If you do what you suggest, then instead of the Airborne Forces, you will receive simple infantry.
The meaning of the Airborne Forces is in quick redeployment.
The soldier and the equipment of the unit have such an indicator as WEIGHT. In the Airborne Forces, it is minimal.
That allows such a unit to be moved extremely quickly with the help of the VTA, having all the equipment on board.

And about "full parachute landing" - this has already been passed, you need to be ready for this, of course, but in real databases, in my opinion, this is an extremely risky event. :)
I am not one of the "apologists" indicated by you at all.

I am not proposing to re-equip the Airborne Forces with military equipment. I propose just to find internal reserves by moving from the concept of full parachute landing to the concept of landing landing:
... why fully arm the Airborne Forces with aluminum cans, sacrificing protection for parachute drop capability - a feature that has only been used in training over the past 60 years? Moreover, in case of refusal to drop landing, it will be possible to strengthen the protection of the BMD without increasing the total mass of equipment loaded into the aircraft - due to the monstrous parachute platform.

That is, in case of refusal from the mandatory parachute landing of the airborne forces, it is possible to strengthen the protection of the combat equipment of the landing force or firepower without increasing the mass and dimensions of the systems - due to the abandonment of the parachute platform or strapdown system that has become unnecessary. The same PBS-950 weighs at least one and a half tons.
