An experimental tank and new engines. Successes and prospects of Turkish armored vehicles

Signing of the acceptance certificate for the first batch of modernized ACS T-155 Yeni Nesil Fırtına 2 in front of one of the vehicles

On January 22, a delegation of the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, headed by the head of the department, Hulusi Akar, visited the Savunma Navy enterprise and the 1st Ana Bakım Merkezi tank repair plant. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense saw new serial and prototypes of armored vehicles, as well as units for use in promising projects. Such a show clearly demonstrates the desire of the Turkish authorities to master new directions and produce the maximum possible number of required samples for their army.

Artillery prospects

One of the main events within the framework of the official visit was the ceremony of handing over to the armed forces the first three modernized self-propelled guns T-155 Yeni Nesil Fırtına 2 (“Fırtına new generation”). These machines were taken from one of the combat units, after which they were repaired and a number of key units were replaced.

Initially, the T-155 self-propelled howitzer was a licensed version of the South Korean K9 Thunder armored vehicle. To date, the Turkish army has received 350 units. such a technique. The modernization project was developed by BMC Savunma and Aselsan, taking into account the experience of the combat use of self-propelled artillery in conflicts in recent years. A prototype of the modernized ACS was presented in 2019, and then the 1st Tank Repair Plant mastered a serial upgrade of equipment.

Demonstration of the running capabilities of the ACS

The Yeni Nesil Fırtına 2 project provides for the installation of a new fire control system from Aselsan. In addition, the semi-automatic loading hydraulics were replaced by an automatic electrical system. The ammunition rack received a means of temperature control. For self-defense, a new remote-controlled weapon station Aselsan SARP is used. If necessary, its optics are used as a sight for direct fire from the main gun.

Experimental tank

At the BMC Savunma plant, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense was shown an experimental tank of a new type, built using available units and new components. Probably, such a project is being worked out in connection with rearmament problems. tank parts.

The tank is built on the Leopard 2A4 chassis. The German-made standard building is supplemented by overhead armor modules and lattice screens manufactured by Roketsan. The Aselsan AKKOR active protection complex mounted on the turret was also used. The turret itself is borrowed from the Turkish-made Altay MBT and, apparently, corresponds to its approved serial appearance.

Experimental tank based on Leopard 2A4 and Altay

The appearance of such an experienced tank is of great interest. Currently, the Turkish army is planning to launch mass production of Altai tanks in their original form. However, such plans faced the problem of the lack of imported engines or their own motors with the required characteristics. The use of the ready-made chassis "Leopard-2" with the new protection, perhaps, will solve the typical problems with the engines.

Diesel alternative

Over the past several years, the issue of creating its own engines for armored vehicles has been actively studied. At the BMC Savunma plant, the Minister of Defense and other delegates were shown the result of this work in the form of three new diesel engines - Vuran, Azra and Utku with a capacity of 400, 600 and 1000 hp. respectively.

As reported, the 600-horsepower Azra engine has already found application in a promising project of an armored combat vehicle. The most powerful sample of the series, Utku, is offered for installation on the modernized Firtina self-propelled guns, which were equipped with MTU diesel engines as standard. Among other things, the use of German engines did not allow Turkey to export its self-propelled guns. After replacing the engine, the ACS can be sold without agreement with a foreign supplier.

Defense Ministry representatives get acquainted with new engines

The issue of using new Turkish engines in the Altay project has not yet been disclosed. Perhaps, in the near future, the Altai MBT will be tested with a new power plant, which will allow launching its mass production. However, the prospects for such a replacement are not entirely clear, and the appearance of an experimental tank on a foreign chassis raises new questions.

Experienced prototype carrier

BMC Savunma has built and presented to the leadership of the Ministry of Defense an experimental wheeled armored vehicle of a new type. During the construction of the prototype, a number of new samples of Turkish design were used, which have not yet found application in the series.

An armored vehicle with an unknown name is built on the basis of a large armored hull with a front-mounted engine compartment and control compartment, as well as an aft troop compartment. An experienced Azra engine is located in the nose compartment. On the pursuit of the hull, the Aselsan Korhan fighting compartment is installed, made in the form of a full-size turret with a 35-mm cannon, machine gun and smoke grenade launchers. Armor protection is supplemented by KAZ type AKKOR.

For many years, the Turkish army has been trying to select a new wheeled armored vehicle to replace the long-obsolete models. This tender is facing various difficulties and has not yet been completed. Perhaps a new project from BMC Savunma was developed specifically for this program - and the new armored personnel carrier can put an end to the protracted competition.

Wishes and opportunities

Turkey continues to build a modern and powerful army. At the same time, the defense industry is required to master the production of the maximum possible number of finished products, units, assemblies, ammunition, etc. Such tasks have been partially solved, and work in this direction continues with one or another result.

The experience of the T-155 Fırtına project shows the ability of the Turkish industry to master the licensed production of foreign technology. In addition, Turkey, with the help of its enterprises, can carry out modernization, providing for the replacement of existing components with its own products. The modernized Fırtına 2 has already gone into series and, probably, the further implementation of this project will not face serious problems.

Experienced armored personnel carrier of a new model

Certain problems remain in the development and production of our own technology. So, the design of the Altay MBT, despite the help of third countries, took a lot of time, and mass production has not yet been launched. At the moment, the reason for this is the lack of imported engines and Turkish replacement for them.

The process of development and production of our own units and assemblies continues successfully. In particular, a wide range of combat modules and other weapons has been developed. There are also advances in electronics. Other areas, such as engine building, are still developing at an insufficient pace. This, in a known way, interferes with the development of related areas, incl. the most important and responsible.

Thus, in Turkey, an ambiguous situation remains with the development and production of armored combat vehicles for the ground forces. Some classes of technology have already been mastered, and even their own design school is being formed. However, in the most difficult areas, difficulties, failures and time shifts are still observed.

The situation is likely to change for the better in the future, and the potential of the Turkish industry will gradually grow. Accordingly, new ceremonies will be held at the enterprises with the participation of the leadership of the military department. However, when new positive tendencies are outlined and manifest themselves and what results they will lead to is a big question.

In short, again the screwdriver assembly. They will press, as with Bayraktars - and the fairy tale will end

If it were not for Europe and America and their technologies, the Turks would not see tanks, armored personnel carriers, or Bayraktar. Although, they are moving in the right direction.

In many ways, we will soon be so without Europe and the United States. Well, or rather, without them, we are very much on the "star" to push the people into a blizzard about what has been done, but it is not said how and from what)

You mean a screwdriver? Since just an article about the fact that they leave the screwdriver.

Firtins will receive a greater degree of localization, including the engine. That will allow you to sell them to anyone they want (for example, Libya, Pakistan, etc.).

Altai has entered the ersatz version - Turkey now has more than 300 Leo2A4, of which more than 200, without any modernization. What is offered:
throw out the tower and take the chassis - where to put the tower from Altai. The chassis even holds 60 tons without problems, judging by the export body kits, there will be a supply there. In total, problems with new engines, transmissions, scarce components, equipment are gracefully dispensed with, and the army gets normal tanks (the tower at Altai is modern, the chassis in the body kit as a whole is also relevant and there are 1500 horses).

They have real problems that are still difficult to solve with the ATAK and Anadolu helicopters (which the UDC will probably leave for 22 years + there will be no VTOL aircraft for them).

Well, they bring to mind also ATTACK 2. The same Pakistani contract has been covered. And besides the engine, a number of systems are difficult to obtain there. Despite assistance from Leonardo.

Anadolu - Slow delivery of various systems. Therefore, saturation is delayed. So far, there seem to be no obvious refusals for critical non-deliveries. It's just that things aren't going fast Somewhere there was even an article in the fall, where the shipyard representative blamed it.

They have their own MSA. And a cannon. And electronics. They have the main priest in Altai with MTO, which was chopped off without the possibility of detours for the future. So they decided it - by offering to remake the outdated Leo2A4 cash into Leo Altai.

in addition, the United States has a bunch of other productions, the same Intels have a bunch of factories in their states up to 10nm. besides them, there are also a bunch of other chip manufacturers with thicker technical processes.
the only thing that the states themselves do not do without anyone is scanners for the production of chips, almost one ASML is engaged in this and all the rest work on their equipment, even the same TSMC and samsung

And what's the point if they screw the Altai tower onto a leopard? Who will supply them with new engines to replace worn-out ones? What about the transmission? Even Koreans cannot do theirs normally. And the cannon? Do the Turks really do them? Rheinmetal will press and that's it. And judging by the length of the barrel, it costs l44 on this underdump, which is no longer suitable.

Engines remain old, that is, used. But the tanks there are still not badly killed. Well, that is, it's like a 5-7 year old German car. The people do not hesitate and take it, realizing that the engine will not crumble soon. It's the same here. This ersatz Altai will have a smaller resource, but as a solution for 5-10 years it will work.

They make the guns themselves under license (Makin eve Kimya Endustrisi Kurumu enterprise). Plus, again they have 200+ old 2A4 leopards with the same gun + spare guns for them.

As already written, a logical step to modernize the tank fleet. Typically, most are equipped with KAZ systems.
    Option 2a4 Altai modernization.

Option 2a4 with enhanced protection and modernized control system.

M60T Sabra carry out combat missions in Syria. All these tanks are equipped with the KAZ system.

Last year we signed a contract for medium tanks Kaplan, although the quantity and equipment were not reported.

Wheeled tank Arma. There are also some movements

    If done as follows
100 pieces of tanks 2a4 Altai
    213 pieces 2a4 modernized
    166 pieces М60T
    100 ~ 200 Kaplan / Arma
Then more than 600 actual tanks will be released. For Turkey and modern wars, more than enough. This is without taking into account the BMP, of which there are also a great many.

also from the side, the momentum is enough for overturning ... that's why it's an excellent target for any type of anti-tank missile system, while it is standing and aiming from the main gun, the dream of any "bearded" with an RPG, or Karl Gustav wink and the booking there, not very heavy for a wheeled chassis, compared to the options on the harp ...

I agree, given that Turkey has burst into the top three manufacturers of the best drones and evaluating the capabilities of real potential adversaries, plus the tactics of wars are clearly changing, where in the future there will still be unmanned (without a crew) tanks, there are now enough of them in the Turkish army.

With unmanned ground vehicles, there is a big problem with radio communications. It is bad and works over short distances. It is technically impossible to make it completely autonomous. It's much easier to create a UAV.
Completely unmanned armored vehicles will not appear in real wars very soon. Estonian developers propose to create a control center on the armored personnel carrier in order to neutralize this problem.

Turkish tower, new. The chassis is not new, it was bought from the Germans, which means it's already Turkish.
So it's closer to a new tank than to modernization.
