New Technologies and First Flight: Success of the NGAD Program

Boeing's future fighter variant

The US Air Force, together with several aircraft manufacturers, is implementing the NGAD (Next-Generation Air Dominance) project. As it became known, the project has already been brought to the construction and flight tests of a full-size model. At the same time, the main success of the program is not the conducted flights, but the development of new technologies.

Recent achievements

The next annual conference of the US Air Force Association was held, dedicated to the prospects for the development of this type of troops, incl. new projects. Will Roper, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Procurement, Technology and Logistics, spoke with other speakers at the event. His report was devoted to new technologies and the promising NGAD program.

Home news: according to the program, the first prototype of a promising aircraft was developed and built, intended for preliminary flight tests and development of basic technologies. Moreover, this product has already made its first flight. Also, tests and fine-tuning of various onboard equipment for a full-fledged aircraft are now being carried out.

The NGAD program remains classified, which is why the assistant minister did not provide any additional information. The participants in the development of the flight model were not named, and the cost of the project and the date of the start of tests were also unknown. U. Roper did not begin to say when the program would come to an end and did not name the timing of deliveries of serial fighters to the troops.

But the current stage of work is indicated. The program is at the decision-making stage. Now the Air Force must choose the most successful of the proposed projects and ensure its further development. It is also required to determine the required number of aircraft and financial capabilities. New NGAD purchases will not begin until FY2022 at the earliest. - the budget for the next financial year no longer provides for such spending.

Digital technology

It is noteworthy that the construction and flight of the prototype NGAD were not the main topic of the report by W. Roper. He paid more attention to new approaches to design aviation techniques that increase the efficiency of well-mastered digital design technologies. Such methods are said to have proven effective.

Just a year ago, the BBC studied the proposals of the program participants, after which the projects were developed. Were prepared digital models of aircraft that have passed "virtual tests". Based on their results, the projects were finalized, and then a prototype was built and flew around. The development of the latest generation aircraft took significantly longer.

Boeing T-7 trainer aircraft

W. Roper notes that new approaches have already been used in the development of the Boeing T-7 Red Hawk trainer. It was created using the optimal combination of digital design tools, flexible programming approaches and an open system architecture. The new NGAD program shows that such methods can be applied not only in simple projects, but also in the development of complex aviation systems.

Technology and industry

The assistant minister believes that the emergence of new design technologies can affect not only the process of developing technology. The situation in the aviation industry may well change. Thus, new organizations with high potential may appear in the industry.

Now the main orders for the construction of aircraft for the Air Force are distributed among several large companies capable of solving complex problems in the development of modern technology. At the same time, the process of design, testing, fine-tuning and commissioning is delayed almost for decades, and also requires large financial expenditures.

New design technologies are expected to simplify development, and this may interest new market entrants. Organizations that previously did not consider themselves capable of working in this area may take part in future Air Force programs. Accordingly, there will be competition with all its advantages.

The maximum use of modern technologies will simplify the competitive development of projects. The Air Force will be able to extend the parallel development process without the need to build real equipment, reducing financial and technical risks. More advanced projects that do not need a long search for shortcomings will approach the testing stage.

Digital "hundredth series"

When used correctly, the new techniques will shorten the time to build aircraft. W. Roper points out that this can be used for more effective modernization of the Air Force. The current views of the command envisage a long process of development and production of equipment for many years for the subsequent 30-year operation.

US Air Force specialists are currently studying the concept of the Digital Century Series. Its name refers to fighters of the "hundredth series" of the fifties and indicates the possibility of quickly creating several advanced models. Calculations show that new approaches can achieve some savings or get other benefits for the same money.

F-35A. Possibly the last US fighter to be developed by the "old" method

After 15-17 years of service, an accelerated increase in the cost of operating the aircraft begins, due to the acceleration of moral and physical obsolescence. Analysts have found that a fighter designed using NGAD or T-7 methods can also serve for the required 30 years, but there is an alternative. The development and putting into service of new machines every 8-10 years, while reducing the service life to 15-16 years, will allow for the same costs to get more opportunities.

Implementing the DCS idea, combined with new development methods, will not result in a significant drop in design, manufacturing and operating costs, but will provide other benefits. It will be possible to quickly update and modernize the Air Force fleet, taking into account changing requirements. In addition, new companies will have to be involved in the work, which will change the current situation in the industry and reduce the risks of monopolization. Finally, it will be possible to get rid of the typical problems of maintaining the readiness of aging technology.

After the first tests

The NGAD program has been in development for several years, but its main details remain unknown. Recently it was reported about the development and the first flight of a prototype technology demonstrator. It is noteworthy that he demonstrates not only the technology of building and equipping aircraft, but also a new approach to the development of technology.

As stated, the use of modern design systems and new approaches has significantly accelerated the implementation of the main stages. This means that a full-fledged prototype with a full set of equipment may appear in the coming years. The further prospects of the project have not yet been determined, but there are already reasons for optimism.

If all the current proposals are implemented, and the projects are completed with the desired results, then the US Air Force can count on a cheaper and faster upgrade of its materiel with understandable results in the context of combat effectiveness. In a different development of events, with the rejection of certain current ideas, combat aviation will be able to get new fighters, but their technical and operational features remain in question.

The Air Force has several key technical and organizational issues to address, and industry must complete the current and future phases of the program. Where this will lead, what the results of the NGAD program will be and how they will affect the development of the air force, hardly even the Pentagon knows.

Yes, I wonder what the Americans will eventually do. What is most interesting is what engine and radar will be. That is, what performance characteristics they will have.

Yes, I've seen it already. Interesting engine. But in the end, they can deliver another one, the same mod XA101 / 100.

            XA100 from GE.
RR started making a hypersonic engine for an airplane, they can also offer something.
But I would be targeting the XA101 / 100. On F / A-XX, one of them will definitely go.

I think the main changes will not be in the characteristics, in the cost of production and testing of the turbojet engine and the Aircraft as a whole. Everything will be digitized to the maximum and a large% of tests will go to digital ... accordingly, it will be cheaper. And the introduction of 3D printers in production will separate the pricing of the aircraft from its large series. and the Americans will not be able to do it as they do now - to make the F35 for 50-70 years and always in a large series ... but every 15 years they will be able to produce a completely new aircraft for the modern requirements at that time.

new approaches to the design of aviation equipment, increasing the efficiency of well-mastered digital design technologies.

Although this is not the text of the report, the information is more interesting than in the article. Especially on the second link. They gave an approximate list of these "new technologies":
          - Agile
          - open architecture
          - digital design and development

But it looks more like the guys came up with a new car for pumping out budget funds. I was especially touched by the description of how the NGAD program will work:

          1. Conclude a contract with at least two manufacturers for the development of a fighter. This could include existing companies capable of building combat aircraft - Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman - as well as new entrants who can offer unique technologies.
          2. Each company creates a hyper-realistic "digital twin" of their fighter design using advanced 3D modeling. These models are used to run countless simulations of how manufacturing and provisioning might occur, hypothetically optimizing both, and reducing costs and labor time.
          3. Conclude a contract with the only manufacturer of fighters for the first batch of aircraft. Roper said the industry could build about a squadron of planes a year, or about 24 planes. Include options for additional aircraft consignments in the contract. Air Combat Command said 72 aircraft - roughly the same number in a typical Air Force wing - would be an acceptable number for normal operation.
          4. While that supplier starts production, renew competition by contracting with other companies to design the next aircraft.

Everything looks very good ... But at every step there are tremendous opportunities for cutting the budget.

            Very strange conclusions ...
Have you seen the development system for the F-22 and F-35?

            it was the same there.
At the stage of issuing terms of reference to four companies, the US Department of Defense proposed to make two alliances.
Since the development is very expensive, and the parallel costs of all four companies in total are too large - that's why alliances have turned out.
And as a result, each company, having paid half the money, became a carrier of new technologies.
And all four companies have risen to a new level.
Even those who did not win the competition.
            They have grown very technologically.
            And motor companies as well.

And the alternate distribution of contracts (with relatively equal levels of technology and development of projects) among the market participants makes colossal leaps forward for the entire industry ...

And the cut is when a corvette, whose task is to defend its coastal zone, is equipped with an attacking weapon, in the form of a Caliber type CD ...

Their innovative approach is impressive, they are constantly looking for more effective solutions! Having stepped on one already hardened foundation, they immediately lay the next step! Scientific and technical progress is accelerating before our eyes! It is a pity that these advanced technologies go straight to the creation of more and more advanced weapons!

We are talking about incredibly complex, high-tech systems surpassing the previous ones by several orders of magnitude in all parameters. The efficiency per unit is conditional, they are cheaper, and the terms of their development are shorter. I will give such an example for illustration - to create a spear, you need many times less knowledge, time and expenses than to create an automaton. But the machine gun is so superior to the spear that the machine gunner can handle 10-20-30-50 without any problems?!? copyist. I don’t know, probably all the same a hundred mad copy-carriers will be able to defeat the submachine gunner, but the price of the spent resource will turn out to be more than to create a submachine gunner. And when you have one spear in your hands, and the enemy has a machine gun in front of you, you will be extremely reluctant to go at him ... hi

And the F-18, 15 has not yet replaced, but it is not immediately possible to replace such an armada. They are constantly being modernized, new versions are launched, they have their place. It's the same with Russian planes! When will the famous Su-57 replace them? When will the "past century" itself become? It's a shame that our descendants will not soon be proud of their contemporaries from cinema, alas!

This is yes. The films were really better in the Union. Looked at a lot.

accelerating the design and creation of a real prototype on modern mathematical techniques can only lead to extended difficulties and problems. Why? Because an airplane is a complex complex structure and the creation of new models is accompanied by the dynamics of the development of certain components of the overall project. For example, the absence of an effective and progressive engine will slow down the development of the airframe, and the latter will affect the detectability, etc., i.e., it is necessary to invest in the creation of new aircraft models the tasks of combining the dynamics of the development of certain technologies. Therefore, everything is based on the search tasks, first of all, mathematical methods for constructing dynamic models for the transformation of big data. And as is obvious on variable functions of numbers, this cannot be done.

designed and built the first breadboard prototype aircraft

Cyril - what kind of mock-up was built for flight tests?
    Stages of creation:
    1- layout.
1.1. model for blowing in a wind tunnel
2 - glider for stat tests
    3 - flight prototype (prototype)
    4 - corrected flight pattern
    5 - small series (installation)
    6 - serial

the project has already been brought to the construction and flight tests of a full-size model

Layouts do not fly - the layout is worked out on them.
the correct term is flight prototype

The timing resembles the story of the creation of the battleship Dreadnought. Then, too, everyone was dumbfounded. The United States can afford this: after all, one of the leaders in the power of supercomputers (here they are competing with China). In Russia, in this sense, everything is much sadder ...

That's for sure! Obviously, people are not able to think algorithmically and independently. That is, we need a methodology for developing thinking and analyzing highly dynamic transformations of events. We need methods for analyzing particular and different levels of group events and generalizing ones. And here, first of all, methods of a mathematical nature are needed.

                I noticed.
I believe that the same rake as ours.
CAD programs appeared (terribly convenient), they stopped thinking in their heads - to apply fundamental knowledge. The program considers loads, efforts, dynamics, torques, resonances - it relaxes.
It did not work - changed the configuration - the program recalculated, went to the planned characteristics. Now the ability to use the programs determines the success.
And this means staying within the constraints inherent in the calculation methodology, sometimes poorly representing the general interaction of dynamical systems.
There is also the meaning of the articles - at the expense of CAD and new elements, to form the image of a modern aircraft (we are talking about fighters), create quick prototypes and issue an order for a small series of 5-7 aircraft every 50-80 years. With a wide unification of units (chassis, cabins, hydraulics, etc.). Accordingly, instead of constant modernization, regularly replenish the fleet with slightly more modern aircraft. Go from a 30-year operation cycle to a 15-year one (since after 15 years of operation, the cost of maintenance increases by 7-10% annually). As a result, to reduce the costs of modernization by 79%, operating costs by 50% (which is 60% of the base price of the aircraft) while increasing development costs by only 25%, and for the purchase of finished products by 18%.
I doubt that they will meet these figures, the idea is generally positive.
It resembles the approach of the Sukhoi Design Bureau to the Su-27, Su-30SM, Su-35 series, only on a more global level - for three manufacturers Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrop Grumman, unification and integration into a single CAD system will be carried out (I wonder how - they not really like it), in order to shorten the development time of prototypes - a sensible idea. But implementation is questionable, since the concept runs counter to corporate interests.

It is very pleasant to read sober reasoning, especially in a calm tone of statement of facts. I think that now it is necessary to create a new level of experts with a tolerant attitude towards the incomprehensible. At the same time, applicants must be required to substantiate ideas and algorithms for the development of these ideas. I will give my own example that it is impossible to break through the wall of alienation from the ideas that we offer. Namely, fundamentally new mathematical foundations for the analysis of capacious and highly dynamically changing transformations of big data. And already on this basis, we consider fundamentally new algorithms of the physical process as the basis for the operation of new aircraft engines. But we hope that the minds of those who realize the futility of modern layouts will mature.

A very interesting and promising topic.
Unfortunately, pushing it through is not easy.
Knowing our design bureaus, which over the years have been building their own methods and working out averaged coefficients (by trial and error), offer them all this in a "bucket" and use something completely new - I imagine the opposition of leaders / performers :)
                    And somewhere they are right.
It is not easy to break the system - to suggest designing according to your methodology, and then recalculating according to the existing one, minimizing risks.
You are great - there are so few enthusiasts left who work because they are interested, and not "for interest."
                    I wish you success.

We are not pushing or breaking the system. We observe who is more perspicacious and wiser. The main thing we understand is that the aspect of timeliness has not been canceled. At the same time, I have repeatedly said on the pages of this site that we have laid the foundations for the operation of future information processing machines. The key principle of their work is that the information does not need to be recalculated when entering new data. It is possible and necessary to construct algorithmically related mathematical codes. In this case, use not a function of a variable value of a number, but a function of a constant value of a number. Therefore, we are talking about methods for analyzing complex and super-intensive data, and most importantly, with different dynamics of the development of analysis processes in various vector directions of these processes. And thanks for the wishes.

Even if they don't fit, they have nowhere to go (we too). The speed of emergence of new technologies has increased. The 7 nm process technology went into series 2 years ago, this week the 5 nm process technology went into series. The same F35 from the moment it was put into service until delivery is outdated relative to itself. The extreme unit will increase the performance of the electronics by a factor of several, reduce the volume, which will increase the compartments for weapons, etc.

The breakthrough is announced in the design methodology. It is the developments obtained that are ALREADY used in CAD. And there are materials, and aerodynamics, and stealth and engines ... The result is a design speed in months (as I understand it). Finalizing a prototype can take years. Immediately adaptation to the pilot, =) pressure ...

I will not be a formalist and insist that "an order of magnitude" is ten times more, I will give a figurative example - a fully armed warrior clad in armor against a man dressed in skins and armed with a stick is an order of magnitude superiority.
Over the past 20 years, in my opinion, nothing fundamentally new in armaments has appeared, we will leave amateurish talk about "weapons based on new physical principles" for the victims of the Bologna education system, otherwise what is said in this article will only help to reach a dead end FASTER.

And the cut is when a corvette, whose task is to defend its coastal zone, is equipped with an attacking weapon, in the form of a Caliber type CD ...

    belay
Gracious oil painting in the style of "Manilov"))))
How the contracting system works in the usa is real and not in the world of a spherical horse:
high-ranking US military personnel do not vegetate in retirement after being fired,
warm places await them in companies with a fat salary, but this sinecure is given to mattress soldiers not for their pretty eyes, but for helping companies.
I don’t want to mention the audit in 2018, when the total amount of accounting adjustments was about $ 30 trillion, or the corruption scandal of the US Navy, when the owner of the Singaporean company Glenn Defense Marine Asia received contracts for servicing American ships in Asian ports for $ 200 million for a fee. At the same time, high-ranking naval officers for a fee redirected ships to ports, where this company was engaged in their service.
I will only draw your attention to a typical episode with Biden's son, who arranged a meeting with his dad for a sickly bribe - this is the US elite, rotten and corrupt.
I recommend Peter Schweitzer's book on this topic entitled "Profiles of Corruption" ...
