28 MAY - Border Guard Day
In Latvia, the Day of the Border Guard is celebrated in November, in Ukraine - in April, in Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan - in August. On this basis, it can be said that these former Soviet republics carried out a reform in order to demonstrate their isolation from their own stories, from any connection with the Soviet past, the "hated" - as they say in certain circles. The dates have changed, including because they are not suddenly suspected of “sympathizing” with Russia and with the past common with our country. The crisis of transitional age. It will pass.
We have - traditionally and firmly - May 28. The date, which recalls the glorious past of the Border Troops, tells about their present and allows us to reflect on new stages of development in the future.
Russian border guards protect the longest lines in the world. From the Baltic to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, from the mountain ranges of the Caucasus to the snow-covered expanses of the tundra, from those places where the first to meet the dawn of a new day to those where the "friendly partners" who became NATO countries managed to settle.
The total length of the Russian border is 23,53 thousand km, of which more than 14 thousand km is the land border. The Russian Federation borders 18-th countries of the world, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia, whose independence was recognized in August 2008 after the Georgian aggression against Tskhinval and the completion of the operation to force the then Georgia to peace.
In most wars and armed conflicts unleashed by foreign states against Russia, it was the frontier guards who were the first to enter the battlefield. One of the hardest periods in this regard is the period of the formation of a young Soviet state, when, after the collapse of a huge empire, the borders were, if I may say so, a sieve through which both ordinary smugglers and those who carried out plans for full-scale occupation Russia.
After the end of the Civil War, a Separate Border Corps of the GPU troops was created, which included all the formations guarding the border. Was determined and the total number of corps - about 50 thousands of people. The first commander of the border corps was appointed Arthur Artuzov. He headed the Counterintelligence Department of the Secret Operations Directorate of the GPU / OGPU. Then the corps consisted of seven border districts: the North Caucasus, Transcaucasian, Ukrainian, Western, Petrograd, Turkestan, and Siberian. A little later, the Border Guard Directorate of the plenipotentiary of the GPU of the Far East was formed.
The first Soviet border guards were forced to fight literally on all "fronts". Gangs of Basmachi attacked in the sands of Central Asia, from Poland and Romania to the young Soviet state made attacks of the gang, which were sponsored by Western special services (Bulak-Bulakhovich and Savinkov), in the Transcaucasus border guards suppressed pogroms in local towns and villages, hijacking cattle, the murder of those who did not speak out against the Soviet regime. There is still no exact information about how many border guards laid down their heads, protecting the borders of the state in these difficult (including already from a historical point of view) years.
Heroism and courage was shown by Soviet border guards during the years of the Great Patriotic War. Together with separate parts of the Red Army the first powerful blow of the Nazis was taken by the military personnel of the border units and divisions on the western borders of the Soviet Union. Fighting was conducted directly on the state border line. The courage shown in fights by frontier guards, is worthy separate conversation. In some cases, it was the actions of the frontier detachments who fought to the last bullet, to the last drop of blood, allowed the units of the Red Army to regroup and take positions for the "meeting" of the enemy.
For the first battles near the USSR border, by decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet on 26 August 1941, the hero of the Soviet Union was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union to border guards I. Buzytskov, K. Vetchinkin, N. Kaimanov, A. Konstantinov, M. Mihalkov, A. Ryzhikov.
Today, the Border Troops of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation carry out tasks to protect the state border in a difficult geopolitical situation. There are several armed conflicts at our borders that, as the main ideologists of this cross-border instability dream, would have spread to Russian territory long ago. Border guards do their job.
"Military Review" congratulates the veterans of the Border Troops and the current personnel of the PS of the FSB of the Russian Federation on the holiday!
