Killer aircraft carriers will make Russia a powerful hypersonic power
2 in November, the Internet publication Phoenix / Ifeng.com in its military section published an article “俄军 史无前例“ 航母 杀手 ”将 列 装 , 奠定 俄罗斯 高 超音速 大 国 地位 (“ Armed with Russia’s “aircraft carrier killer” making it powerful hypersonic power "). As follows from the title, the authors reviewed the latest projects in the advanced industry and evaluated their impact on the development of the Russian armed forces.
At the beginning of the article, Chinese authors are reminded of the expected events discussed recently. They indicate that the Russian army may soon receive the latest models of hypersonic weapons. If they can be handed over to the armed forces in the near future, Russia will receive a unique status. It will become the first country in the world to bring hypersonic technology to operation.
First of all, we are talking about hypersonic military equipment for a promising ballistic missile "Sarmat". In addition, it is known about the existence of a new anti-ship missile "Zircon". It was she who became the first Russian product of its class, brought to the testing stage. However, as noted by the Chinese edition, the Russian military are in no hurry to disclose data on new projects of hypersonic weapons. In addition, they do not publish photos and video of products.
"Phoenix" recalls that, according to official data, no country in the world has yet adopted a hypersonic system. Last news show that Russia is creating projects of this kind. If it can conduct new tests and demonstrate new weapons, for example, before the end of this year, this will have important consequences. The Zirkon rocket will be able to become the first product in its class in the world, which is notable for its special capabilities. None of the existing air defense systems can intercept such weapons. If Zircon is really capable of developing hypersonic speed, then it will be able to overcome any existing means of protection.
In the context of promising Russian weapons, the authors recall an old Chinese proverb. She says that there are no martial arts in which it would be impossible to win with speed. The latest news shows that Russia is implementing the principle of this proverb in practice. In the very near future, the Russian army may be the first in the world to get a hypersonic weapon. As a result, Russia will confirm its status as a world leader in a promising direction. The authors recall that research in the field of hypersonic technology continues throughout the world over the past few decades.
However, Phoenix reminds that the development of hypersonic technologies and weapons based on them is not simple. Many key aspects of this area are extremely difficult to build and refine. Most of them still cannot advance beyond research and testing. In addition, promising projects are faced with various difficulties affecting their course.
The publication gives a couple of examples of unsuccessful projects of hypersonic systems from the recent past. Thus, at the beginning of the decade, the American organization DARPA conducted two test launches of HTV-2 aircraft as part of the Falcon project. Both flights ended with undesirable results. Tests recognized failure. In Russia, a project of a similar kind was developed under the name “Igla”. However, it also failed to bring to the desired state. This time, the continuation of work was prevented by a lack of funding.
The latest Russian projects in the field of hypersonic weapons seem to be a success. This means that Russian scientists and engineers were able to make a significant contribution to the development of the industry, including the global one.
At the end of his article the publication "Phoenix" asks a question about the fundamental differences between hypersonic weapons and systems of another type. It asks: what is the main advantage of hypersonic systems? Here is the answer. Its main advantage is the high flight speed, which, for example, allows you to effectively attack other weapons systems. High flight speed and the corresponding kinetic energy increases the impact on the target, and also simplifies the breakthrough of the enemy defense. The authors believe that hypersonic weapons of new types can effectively overcome the opposition of most of the existing anti-aircraft and missile defense systems.

A recent article by the Chinese publication Phoenix vividly demonstrates the interest in promising Russian developments shown by the foreign press. At the same time, the publication “俄军 史无前例“ 航母 杀手 ”将 装 , 奠定 俄罗斯 高 超音速 大 国 地位 has specific features. Firstly, it doesn’t really go into details of a technical or political nature, and secondly, it may look overly laudatory. In other words, the authors noted Russian merits in the development of a promising industry and noted what they are, but did not begin to consider in detail the new projects.
However, praise can not be called undeserved. Russian science and industry is really actively engaged in the study and development of hypersonic technology, and to date has received very remarkable results. According to various recent reports, at least two promising samples of hypersonic weapons are approaching the adoption stage and the start of operation. Thus, as the authors of Phoenix rightly point out, Russia may in the near future be the first country in the world to adopt a hypersonic weapon.
First of all, we are talking about the latest anti-ship missile 3M22 Zircon. Last year, there were reports of the imminent arrival of such weapons in the troops. A few months ago, in the spring, news was published in the Russian press according to which the new State Arms Program for 2018-2025 provided for the purchase of Zircon serial products. The missile has already passed a series of tests and in the near future will be able to get into the arsenals. However, it is possible that the first products of this type, in an atmosphere of secrecy, have already gone to the naval warehouses fleet.
The Chinese edition also mentions a “hypersonic rocket” called “Sarmat”. In this case, we are talking about a heavy-class intercontinental ballistic missile with special combat equipment. To improve the combat qualities and effectiveness of the Sarmat type PC-28 ICBM, a special guided combat unit called Avangard was developed. It is a hypersonic aircraft, capable of independently making a high-speed gliding flight. Like standard warheads, such a product can develop high speed, but it is distinguished by the possibility of maneuvering during flight.
To date, Russian officials have repeatedly talked about testing the Sarmat missile. In addition, ongoing inspections of the Avangard product have been announced. In the medium term, apparently, joint tests of an intercontinental launch vehicle and its hypersonic combat equipment will take place. The entire complex will be commissioned in 2020 a year or later.
However, the first carrier of Avangard will be a different rocket. According to recent Russian press reports, the deployment of these products will begin in 2019. Their carriers will be upgraded missiles UR-100N UTTH.
Known samples of hypersonic weapons developed in Russia are designed to solve different combat missions, but they have similar operating principles, which provide the same advantages over other weapons. A hypersonic aircraft, equipped with its own power plant or not having it, is capable of high-speed flight and maneuvering. High speed drastically reduces the allowable response time of air defense weapons, and maneuvering makes it difficult to properly guide interceptor missiles. Moreover, such a goal is beyond the capabilities of "classic" missile defense systems designed to counter ballistic missiles.
Curious is the fact that the Chinese edition, admiring Russian developments in the field of hypersonic technology, does not mention domestic projects. In recent years, Chinese science and industry also shows some success, and its new developments in the future can enter into service, increasing the potential of the army.
According to known data, since 2014, China has been testing a WU-14 or DF-ZF hypersonic aircraft. The tests of this product are still ongoing, and the test vehicles made several successful flights. However, the exact characteristics of the product, as well as the plans of the military for its further development, remain unknown. According to various estimates, a hypersonic device can become a carrier of a nuclear or conventional warhead and will be designed to quickly defeat remote targets of the enemy.
The development of advanced models of hypersonic weapons conducted in different countries. At the same time, Russian projects of this kind have advanced further than foreign ones. According to various sources, rockets and warheads of new types successfully cope with the tests and should soon enter service. Obtaining a new weapon with unique capabilities, Russia, as the Phoenix notes, is becoming a powerful hypersonic power.
