Anti-rifle Mechem NTW-20

23
The Mechem NTW-20 rifle has been in service with the South African national defense forces for almost 15 for years. Created at the beginning of the 90-ies of the last century, in the firm "Aerotek", by the designer T. Neofit. It is a unique sniper rifle, designed to destroy light armored vehicles and defeat at long distances manpower. Base rifle - anti-tank gun. This weapon, due to the use of modern means of armored equipment is becoming increasingly important.

Anti-rifle Mechem NTW-20

The use of a rifle against lightly armored vehicles in the modern world causes a lot of controversy. The same mortar with a similar task will cope much more efficiently, and against even well-protected enemy fighters it is more efficient to use heavy machine guns. True, there is one indisputable advantage in these rifles - they are very effective in the fight against snipers. The rifle is provided with a more effective range and higher accuracy than conventional rifles that are in service or on sale.

Therefore, with the Mechem NTW-20 anti-material rifle, you can successfully resist enemy snipers, being out of reach of return fire. Another successful application is the demining of non-operational air bombs. At a safe distance, the sniper destroys the fuse, which facilitates the subsequent work of the sappers.

Mechem NTW-20 are anti-material rifle caliber 20 mm. 20x82 are used for power. This ammunition leads its history since 2MB and used to defeat tanks. The next ammunition of the caliber of 20 mm was Vulkan 20x102, Gispano 20x110, HS820 20x138. To use the latest cartridges, you need to increase the barrel length. This achieves the required muzzle velocity of a bullet. Ammunition has a greater recoil force and flash intensity than a conventional 20x82-mm cartridge, despite the fact that their useful weight is almost identical. Ammunition is presented in a large assortment, but mainly use cumulative or high-explosive ammunition. The bullet does not depend on the cartridge variant and is provided with an aluminum belt for normal passage through the barrel.

Very effective when using Mechem NTW-20, became high-explosive ordnance - when hit, it is able to destroy the enemy in the diameter of 10-meters. The effective range while 1.5 kilometer and, retaining a large penetrating force, the bullet was able to pierce the walls and explode inside shelters, premises or equipment.

But such a defeat distance is common for many rifles, and the rifle manufacturer decided to add a barrel to the rifle package for firing from it with Soviet ammunition 14.5 mm. The cartridge was not chosen by chance - it is because of its striking characteristics and armored vehicles that there is a standard for armor protection from similar ammunition at a distance of 300 meters. The cartridge is able to flash any of the existing bulletproof vests at a distance of up to 2-x kilometers, applied from the "Mechem NTW-20". In addition to the barrel for 14.5 mm, the bundle includes a barrel for 12.7 mm ammunition and Soviet-Russian and NATO ammunition can be used. The meaning of the use of ammunition 12.7 mm is available for training - it saves expensive ammunition, which is not very common in the arms market. Changing the barrel to another takes place without various special tools and will not take more than a minute in time.

The designer of Mechem NTW-20, T. Neofit, being aware of the great impact of his brainchild, made a lot of effort to reduce it. It was required that the recoil does not affect the accuracy of fire and on the very arrow. The 4 system was implemented:
- the first system is a muzzle brake of increased power, which, when fired from a rifle, attempts to push it forward under the action of jet streams of powder gases;
- the second system - hydraulic damper;
- the third system - spring-type damper;
The 2-I and 3-I systems are interconnected, the hydraulic damper first takes the recoil when the barrel moves backward, the spring damper picks up the barrel midway and begins to further reduce the recoil.
- the fourth system is a rubber butt pad, which serves as the last recoil damping system.
All the systems together really make the return of the Mechem NTW-20 a little more than the 12.7 rifle mm.

Rifle device
Mechem NTW-20 is made according to the manual-type recharge scheme with a longitudinal sliding gate. The bolt locks the barrel to six lugs. Power rifle comes from the box magazine with three ammunition capacity. In principle, you can put the cartridge in the ejection window of the ejected shell, and it will work as a single-shot rifle. The Mechem NTW-20 open sights are not provided, but have a regular 8 optical sight, which can be easily replaced. No adjustment in case of replacement is required. A special arc has been installed to carry the rifle, and it also protects the telescopic sight from damage. Bipods fold forward and are height adjustable. In addition to the front bipod, a rifle is possible with a third bipod on the butt, also folding forward. Shooting from a rifle is carried out only with the stop.

The rifle has its drawbacks. First of all, it is weight - 23-26 kilograms. However, the calculation of the rifle is two people, and in the traveling state all parts of the rifle are distributed for carrying between them in the shoulder bags. The next moment is rather large unmasking characteristics, which the arrow unmasks. But the range of use of the rifle is much longer than that of conventional rifles and, in principle, it will not be enough for the enemy to detect the shooter. And finally, due to the fact that the powder gases are sent back by the muzzle compensator, the shooter without special devices that protect the ears, can damage the hearing.

The uniqueness of the rifle is visible in everything - it has large dimensions and weight, it can use ammunition from the time of 2МВ and the most modern, you can use 25 mm grenades from modern American grenade launchers. Ammunition for a rifle is quite expensive - for example, a grenade costs about 50 dollars, and a high-explosive type ammunition costs about seven dollars.

Modern similar weapons have only one advantage over the anti-material rifle - automatic shooting. This rifle can fire only single shots; a hydraulic damper takes about 15 seconds to get ready for the next shot. The shooter will also not be able to quickly continue shooting, because after a shot from such a rifle, even with the use of protection for the ears, it will take several seconds to recover, and if it is fired at night, it will also need to be restored.

Key Features:
- length 179 centimeters;
- total weight 26 kilogram;
- centimeter barrel 100;
- effective range 20 / 14.5 mm - 1.5 / 2.3 km.

    Large-caliber rifles are a necessary and good thing. Although the 12.7 caliber is quite suitable for everyone. Interesting in that there are interchangeable barrels on the 14.5 and 12.7 for us in special sniper units, rifles with interchangeable barrels. During World War II (read) snipers used anti-tank rifles, which gave good results. In my opinion, if the South African people have specialists for such a barrel, then this is not bad. I like grenade launchers more.

    Such systems have a right to exist. Of course, shooting from such a "rifle" is not sugar, but the possibility of hitting targets with shrapnel looks promising. It is the fragmentation ammunition that can make a successful anti-sniper weapon out of it. By the way, the barrel is replaced by unscrewing the nut located at the base of the barrel. and in order to unscrew it into the nut, you need to insert a cartridge or sleeve. elegant solution

    How do you like this option ...
    Designed by Bob Stewart in 1994 as a concept design. The weapon uses a 30x173 mm artillery round from the GAU-8 / A automatic aviation cannon of the American Air Force A-10 "Warthog" attack aircraft.

    The external design of the weapon resembles an anti-tank grenade launcher, but it is a rifled "hand" single-shot cannon. Its design is similar to the 12,7-mm "carbine" of the same designer. To damp the powerful recoil impulse, together with an enlarged muzzle brake, the barrel rolls back with braking with a special shock absorber. After the shot, until the powder gases start to work in the muzzle brake, the barrel has time to roll back 130 mm, compressing the shock absorber spring. This technique, according to the designer, made it possible to obtain an "acceptable" recoil energy.

    The weapon has undergone an experimental shooting and is now offered for arming mainly army special forces, as it is recommended to install it on vehicles due to the large mass.

    The calculation of the gun is 2 people - one serves as a loader, the other as a gunner.

      Maximum effective firing range: about 1800 meters

      Hand cannon - this is how the full name "RucniTop" of the Croatian design RT-20 heavy rifle stands. This mini-monster was created in the mid-1990s, during the Serbian-Croatian conflict after the collapse of the allied Yugoslavia. The main purpose of the RT-20 was to combat vehicles, including lightly armored vehicles. RT-20 is manufactured by RH-Alan and is in service with the Croatian army.

      The RT-20 is built around a 20mm projectile 20x110mm, created more than 50 years ago for Hispano Suiza HS 404 anti-aircraft gun. Such ammunition is still used for automatic anti-aircraft guns in some European countries and is available in high-explosive, armor-piercing and armor-piercing incendiary versions. shells. The mass of the projectile itself is 130 grams, the initial velocity is about 850 m / s. When firing a weapon weighing 20 kg, such a projectile produces a recoil four times higher than the recoil when firing a 12.7 mm rifle weighing 10 kg, for example, Barrett M95. To compensate for such a powerful return, the designers of this rifle had to take special measures. In addition to the massive muzzle brake and shock absorbing pads on the shoulder rest, the RT-20 has a reactive recoil compensation system, partly similar to that used in recoilless anti-tank guns. Around the middle of the barrel length a series of holes were made in it, through which part of the powder gases from the barrel is diverted to a pipe passing above the barrel, and gases are led back through it, creating a reactive force that counteracts recoil forces when fired. Such a system allows the use of ammunition that is noticeably superior in power to the projectiles used in other samples of 20mm anti-material rifles - the South African NTW-20 and the Finnish APH-20. On the other hand, the presence of a jet exhaust creates a number of problems: it requires the absence of obstacles such as walls behind the weapon, creates additional unmasking factors, requires the shooter and the soldiers surrounding him to be very careful to avoid injuries of hot powder gases that fly back at a high speed.

      RT-20 is built on a bullpup layout. A pistol grip with a trigger and a shoulder rest are made in front of the receiver, under-barrel. The barrel is locked by turning a massive longitudinally sliding bolt into three combat stops, the bolt handle is located on the left. To ensure a relatively high rate of fire, such a scheme requires a second person in the calculation of the weapon - the loader. The rifle does not have an open sight, shooting is carried out using optical or night sights, shifted to the left of the axis of the barrel due to the recoil pipe passing through the barrel. Fire from the RT-20 is conducted only from the stop, using folding bipod. The rifle can be carried by one person in a special package behind.

    roughly, to pull a small-caliber gun (albeit packaged in bales) while crawling in a plastunsky way, I think it’s still a pleasure. and the practical rate of fire of 4 rounds per minute (and even with the prospect of being deaf) is somehow not impressive. I understand that this is not a machine gun, but still in certain situations it can play a decisive role. Yes, and an 8-fold sight is somehow rather weak for distances of 2 km or more. but since this little thing is released, then someone needs it request

    Caliber: 15.2mm Steyr APFSDS
    Mechanism: self-loading, with a long stroke of the barrel and locking by turning the shutter
    Barrel: 1200 mm
    Weight: about 18 kg
    Length: 1800 mm
    Store: 5 round detachable cartridges

    In the mid-1980s, engineers of the Austrian firm Steyr-Mannlicher AG began to develop large-caliber anti-materiel weapons designed to destroy enemy materiel - light armored vehicles, fortifications, aircraft and other equipment in parking lots, helicopters, radar cabins, etc. P. Initially, they experimented with weapons chambered in 12.7mm caliber with sub-caliber bullets. In the course of the experiments, it turned out that ammunition of the OBPS type (feathered armor-piercing sub-caliber projectile), which is a feathered arrow made of tungsten alloy, provides greater efficiency. A small experimental series of 14.5mm smoothbore shotguns (you cannot call them rifles) was produced under the designation Steyr AMR 5075. During their tests, the caliber was further increased, and the final (at the moment) nominal caliber is 15.2 mm. The system, consisting of a smooth-bore self-loading rifle and a special cartridge with a sub-caliber feathered bullet, was named Steyr IWS 2000. At present, this system seems to be ready for mass production and putting into service, but, as far as is known, no one has bought it yet - apparently, also due to the fact that the Steyr IWS 2000 requires a completely new, non-standard cartridge.

    The cartridge for the Steyr IWS 2000 has a plastic bottle sleeve with a steel bottom. A plastic detachable container is placed in the head part, inside of which there is a feathered tungsten arrow. The diameter of the boom is 5.5 mm, the mass according to various sources is from 20 to 35 grams, the initial speed is 1450 meters per second. At a range of 1000 meters, this arrow pierces 40 mm of steel homogeneous armor and provides a significant cross-fragmentation effect. Due to the high initial speed and good aerodynamics of the boom, when firing at a range of 1000 meters, the trajectory throughout its entire length does not rise above 800 mm above the aiming line. Steyr IWS 2000 is not designed to act against individuals, but if it hits a person even at long ranges, the result will be very, very impressive, with a practically guaranteed fatal outcome.

    The gun itself (or, incorrectly speaking, the "smoothbore rifle") Steyr IWS 2000 is built on the basis of automatic equipment with a long barrel travel. After firing, the barrel, locked by the bolt, rolls back inside the receiver by about 20 centimeters. Then the bolt is unlocked, turning relative to the barrel. The barrel returns to the forward position, removing and discarding the spent cartridge case, while the bolt remains in place. After the barrel has come to the forward position, the bolt is automatically released, moves forward, feeding a new cartridge, and at the end locks the barrel with its turn. To compensate for the extremely high recoil energy, in addition to the barrel rollback, which stretches the recoil for a sufficiently long period of time, a large muzzle brake-compensator and an oil-air shock absorber located around the barrel are also used. The receiver and stock of the weapon are made with extensive use of plastic to reduce weight. The weapon is made in a bullpup configuration, the box magazine is inserted on the right at an angle to the horizontal (approximately 45 degrees down). The Steyr IWS 2000 is equipped with a two-legged bipod and an additional retractable support under the butt. For transportation, the barrel is separated from the receiver and the weapon is packed in two bales, which are carried by the calculation of the weapon. Steyr IWS 2000 is equipped with a 10X optical sight as standard.
