The most famous large-caliber sniper rifles. Part of 2. OSV-96

The Russian large-caliber sniper rifle OSV-96 "The Burglar" is a fairly well-known example of a rifle weapons. OSV-96 became the first Russian model of weapons of this class and is a kind of response to the American Barret M82 rifle. In contrast to the American sniper rifle, it was created by real professionals in their field - the designers of one of the largest Russian defense enterprises of the Instrument Engineering Design Bureau JSC (TBC) from Tula.

12,7-mm large-caliber sniper self-loading rifle OSV-96 "Burglar" has become the first domestic model of the weapon of this class. The rifle allows you to hit not only manpower, but also various enemy equipment at long distances. Especially for this rifle in Tula, the 12,7-mm sniper cartridge with an armor-piercing bullet was developed and mastered in production; shooting using it provides the shooter with a higher accuracy rate for small and lightly armored targets. Currently, the rifle is in service with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Federal Security Service and the Ministry of Defense of Russia. In addition to Russia, this rifle is in service with armies and special units of a number of countries, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Vietnam, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Syria.

The OSB-96 large-caliber sniper rifle was developed by the Instrument Design Bureau OJSC based on the earlier self-loading model of the Volga B-94 large-caliber sniper rifle as part of the Vzlomschik development project. On the basis of the B-94 prototype, a serial version of the rifle was developed, which was labeled OCB-96.

B-94 "Volga"

Rather active and large-scale research and development work on the creation in our country of an effective and competitive large-caliber sniper rifle began in 1990-ies, following the proliferation and appearance of this weapon in other countries of the world. In subsequent years, a sufficient number of samples of such weapons of caliber 12,7 and 14,5 mm were created in Russia. But one of the first samples of large-caliber sniper weapons was created precisely in Tula. One of the first openly presented samples of such weapons in 1994 was the experienced self-loading sniper rifle B-94.

The use of cartridges caliber 12,7x108 mm provided the weapon with a large effective firing range. These caliber allowed the shooter to remain out of reach of aimed fire of small arms of conventional calibers, which is very important in real combat conditions. In this case, 12,7-mm bullet has three times less demolition than ammunition caliber 7,62-mm is noted on the official website of the Design Bureau of Instrument Engineering. Also for the new large-caliber sniper rifle, a self-loading principle of operation was chosen and an effective muzzle device was used. In the aggregate, this allowed the shooter to reduce fatigue when shooting and provide him with the possibility of firing with a high rate of fire.

After a number of improvements and some modernization on the basis of a decree of the Government of Russia on 28 December 1996, a large-caliber B-94 sniper rifle "Volga" was adopted by the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. Despite the adoption of a new rifle, the work on its further modernization was continued, the weapon was gradually improved. Of the external changes, the bipod mount on a special bracket can be attributed to the most noticeable, while the bipods themselves have become adjustable. Also gunsmiths from Tula changed the design of the muzzle brake and the shape of the wooden butt, which later became plastic. In addition, large-caliber sniper rifle received a handle for carrying and other sighting devices. The result of systematic work to improve the sniper rifle was the appearance of the SALT-96 model, which, after successfully conducting state tests on the basis of a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, was adopted by the Russian Interior Ministry in March 2000.

OSV-96 is a self-loading large-caliber sniper rifle, whose automation work is based on using the energy of powder gases. At the moment of firing, the powder gases through a special venting hole in the barrel enter the gas tube, which acts on the slide frame piston, forcing it to move backwards. When the slide frame is rolled back, the barrel of the sniper rifle is unlocked, the cartridge is removed and ejected, the spring is compressed, the hammer is raised and the process of feeding the new cartridge to the discharging line. With the help of a return spring, the slide frame returns to the forward position again. Locking the barrel rifle occurs by turning the bolt in the interaction of the leading ledge of the bolt with a shaped groove located on the bolt carrier. Locking and unlocking the bore of the rifle, removing the spent cartridge case from the chamber, feeding the ammunition from the box magazine to the 5 cartridges and sending the cartridge into the chamber after the shot is fired.

One of the features of the Russian large-caliber sniper rifle OSV-96 is the folding design. It takes just a few seconds to transfer a weapon from a folded position to a combat position and back. In the area of the breech of the 12,7-mm sniper rifle is a special hinge and locking device. The rifle folds easily in half. The barrel of the rifle, together with the vapor tube, folds to the right and back and is fixed, pressing against the receiver with the help of a special latch. The opening of the chamber of OCB-96 at the same time is sealed with a special lever mechanism, which, in turn, prevents clogging of the barrel and the mechanisms of automatic weapons. In the folded position, the length of the rifle is equal to the length of the barrel with a muzzle brake and does not exceed the dimensions of the mass Russian army rifle SVD, which allows you to easily and conveniently transport weapons in armored vehicles and other vehicles over considerable distances.

A muzzle brake-compensator of reactive action is installed on the muzzle cut of the barrel of a large-caliber rifle OSV-96, the gases discharged with it do not create an additional load on the sniper. A feature of this Tula rifle is a fairly simple open (mechanical) sighting device in the form of a fly that folds out along the trunk with the whole thing. The rifle bolt locks the barrel into four lugs, which engage with the breech's stops when locking the barrel. The cocking handle is on the right side. On a special console, which is located in front of the receiver OCB-96, there are bipods adjustable in height, which allow the sniper to take the most convenient position for firing. At the same time, the bipods allow the shooter to rotate the console relative to the rifle barrel in the longitudinal plane, for this reason the rifle can be used quite effectively on any, even a rather uneven surface. However, this solution has drawbacks. The downside is that the bipods, like the rifle carry handle, are attached directly to the barrel of the weapon, which does not have a very positive effect on the accuracy of firing.

On the receiver of a large-caliber rifle mounted Picatinny-type strap, which can be used to install various types of day and night sights. At the same time, OSV-96 is not intended for firing from the hands, therefore it does not have a forearm. The rifle butt is made of plastic, the pistol grip is made of modern high impact plastic. Shock absorbing butt of the rifle butt (unregulated) together with the muzzle brake compensator suppresses recoil from the shot, the butt pad is made of rubber.

OSV-96 large-caliber sniper rifle is designed to hit unarmored and lightly armored targets at a distance of up to 1800 meters, as well as enemy personnel in personal protective equipment and behind various shelters at a distance of up to 1000 meters. When shooting a rifle using sniper cartridges at a range of 100 meters in series of 4-5 shots, the scattering diameter does not exceed 50 mm. In this case, one of the drawbacks of this model, experts call a very loud sound when fired, so the shooters are recommended to fire in the headphones.

Currently, this sniper rifle is waiting for modernization. OSV-96 will be upgraded and will receive a new sniper cartridge, as a result, it should be highly accurate. A representative of the Tula Instrument Engineering Design Bureau named after Shipunov told TASS journalists about this 30 of May 2018. According to him, to date, the SALT-96 large-caliber rifle is inferior in accuracy to the indicators of other types of sniper weapons developed by KBP, for example, the MT-116M rifle. Therefore, today, work is underway to modernize the large-caliber OSV-96 sniper rifle in terms of improving the accuracy and accuracy of its firing. At present, the works are at the stage of research and development, later development work and testing of the upgraded sample will begin. It is expected that the upgraded sniper rifle with a new cartridge will be ready in 2020 year.

Tactical and technical characteristics of OCB-96:
Caliber - 12,7 mm.
The cartridge - 12,7 x108 mm.
Barrel length - 1000 mm.
Total length - 1746 / 1154 mm (unfolded and folded position).
Weight without ammunition and optical sight - 12,9 kg.
Effective range of shooting - to 1800 m.

This is the "theme". Shoot with this. Probably a test batch of some rifles in the new caliber will be included in the .408 CheyTac.

Rather, they will buy a license for the Barrett XM500, than there will be a rifle for the .408 Cheyenne Tactical.

Thank you for the article, but its designations do not reveal the advantages over Barrett. Our cartridge is more powerful, but the firing range is the same, it’s also impossible to shoot with hands, and headphones are required. So what is it better then?

To fall into the silhouette of a man from 600 meters with the osp-96 is equivalent to get into a flying airplane from an automatic machine.

      Accuracy is higher.
When shooting from a rifle using sniper cartridges at a range of 100 meters in series of 4-5 rounds, the dispersion diameter does not exceed 50 mm.

It is the diameter of dispersion that is the fundamentally distinctive feature of Barrett. And if in “Inch” they get into accuracy, then for an experienced sniper this will be a real “sufferer”.

at a range of 100 meters in series of 4-5 rounds the dispersion diameter does not exceed 50 mm

First, on 4 or on 5 shots? The difference is significant.
Second, the The true dispersion diameter must be found in series of 50 shots. According to this series, the median deviation of the dispersion is determined.
Of course, it is possible to recalculate the cross-section of 5 shots across the cross-section of 50 shots by the corresponding coefficients. But recounting is still an approximate matter. It is necessary to shoot several series of 50 shots, and manufacturers do not. Maybe because a series of 50 shots will give the diameter in 2 more than once more? And all the talk about the inch diameter and the "sufferers" have to stop?
To justify our arms manufacturers, I note that this fraud - advertising the diameter for the "castrated" series (4-5 shots) - went from foreign manufacturers. And ours have already learned from them.

Where did you see the LIVE sniper who shot 50 shots in a row? What is this safari? After the 15th shot, the heap will float, and after 40 from barrel contamination, it is generally better to shoot a machine gun than expensive (sniper cartridge about 5000 rubles) ammunition to spend. And after cleaning, what is this series?

People confuse warm and soft ... And it already tastes. ))) There are standard requirements for sniper rifles (close to sports), but there are differences. And so, you are absolutely right from the point of view of mathematics, a larger number of hits gives undoubtedly more accurate values. The question is what kind of weapon barrel are you checking. For a machine gun, your statement is possible and will be true, but for a sniper rifle, NO! I will already keep silent that the shot is being fired on the run-in and clean COLD barrel. A series of 50 shots)))) Smiled)))) no, not even "Loaf" ..)))

the shot is done on the run-in and clean COLD barrel

Patent your invention. Before you, no one thought to determine the accuracy from a cold barrel by one hole (but how could it be otherwise, because after the first shot the barrel is no longer cold).
So your knowledge of the subject of discussion "smiled".

Where did you see the LIVE sniper who made a row of 50 shots?

In any textbook on ballistics, there is a section on the dependence of the size of the dispersion cross-section on the number of shots. Only the 50 series of arrows are reliable. For a smaller series, the diameter will be necessarily smaller.
And better buy the 3-th book of the former head of the cartridge department TsNIITOCHMASH V.N. Dvoryaninov, there is not only a theory, but also practical recommendations for clarifying the accuracy standards of our small arms. Accessible and reliable.

The most important thing in the article is the phrase - "When shooting from a rifle using sniper cartridges at a range of 100 meters in series of 4-5 rounds, the dispersion diameter does not exceed 50 mm." Here, every word is gold, I translate it in an understandable language. Gross ammunition from it and 2 MOA can not be squeezed :) For lack of them at all .. then this is happiness. Regarding developments since 2000, it may no longer be necessary to wrinkle your forehead if you haven’t been honored in almost 20 years.

This rifle is under the gross cartridge and is not intended. You probably do not pour "donkey urine" into your foreign car. And why here she should almost throw stones.

Allegory ... By the way, the idea was taken from PTRS (Simonov) anti-Tan guns. I said the idea and not the design. With modern technology, the barrel is more qualitative and the ammunition is much easier to make.

That’s exactly the trunk and then no! And there is no one to make it in such a caliber. A new ammunition is generally from the realm of fantasy, since 2010 they can’t do 338. Forget! For 70 years they can’t do anything new, but then they’ll suddenly do it? Listen to these pros (for 30 years, the pants are wiped in KB) and you will understand that apart from the Mosin rifle (with picatinny bar) they can not do anything.
