A guard who is on duty in the immediate vicinity of the protected object can be replaced by a remotely controlled system with surveillance equipment and weapons. Such a system should have obvious advantages over the person and show better results. First of all, automation does not need rest and regular change, and besides, it is capable of working with equal efficiency in all weather conditions and at any time of the day. Finally, the work of a mechanical "watch" almost completely eliminates any risks for its operator.
Understanding the needs of the armed forces or security forces, as well as having certain achievements, the Kalashnikov concern developed and presented a promising multi-purpose system suitable for organizing security complexes or solving certain combat missions. Last year, the concern took part in the international military-technical forum "Army-2017", where it presented a number of new developments of various kinds. Together with other products showed system PPDA.
Complex "Portable (armory) a platform with remote control "(abbreviated as PPDU) is a compact combat module with machine gun or other weapons, coupled with control equipment. This system has a fairly simple design, but it is expected to be able to show the highest performance and solve a wide range of combat or other missions.
The main element of the complex is the platform itself. At last year's exhibition, two versions of such a platform were shown, which differed in a number of design features. Apparently, the lightweight version of the platform was intended for use with a rifle-caliber machine gun, while the larger and heavier should be used with large-caliber weapons, automatic grenade launchers, etc.
Regardless of the destination, in both cases it was about the use of a platform with four supports, on which was installed a rotary unit with mounts for electronics and weapons. At the same time, two versions of FPADs differed in the design of individual units. Thus, the machine of one of the options was a square platform with four folding legs, and in the second version of the project, an X-shaped part was used instead of the base plate. There were also certain differences in the design of arms mountings.
The machine is proposed to install a swivel device with its own electric driven horizontal pickup. On this device, in turn, are vertical supports for mounting the rocking machine-gun installation. Vertical guidance was proposed to perform with a separate electric motor. From the point of view of the general architecture of the guidance tools, the two versions of the PSDU were identical, but they had noticeable external differences.
The swinging unit with attachments for weapons was made of two main parts: a fixed base and a “cradle” connected with spring-loaded recoil devices. Thus, a significant part of the recoil should be absorbed by the springs, which would reduce the impact on all units of the combat module. The swinging device with a machine gun received a hard link with a block of opto-electronic equipment.
The two prototypes shown at last year’s exhibition had different observation and guidance devices. Thus, the "light" version of the FPDA received a relatively compact casing with optical-electronic equipment, which was placed on the left above the machine gun. The second product was equipped with a larger unit with a different composition of the equipment. The large building had to be installed on separate supports fixed directly to the swinging part. Thus, the unit was directly above the receiver of the machine gun.

The reasons for these differences are obvious. On the front wall of the smaller casing there was only one lens, which indicates the use of only a video camera. The end of a larger unit has four lenses, which indicates the presence of a thermal imager and a laser rangefinder. Thus, the “heavy” version of the portable platform has enhanced capabilities in monitoring and detecting targets.
The light version of the PDA, which had only a video camera, was equipped with simplified means of ammunition. On the right side of the combat module, fastenings were provided for a standard metal box for cartridge tape placed perpendicular to the weapon axis. The second version of the project involved the installation of a larger box, which had to be placed parallel to the machine gun. In addition, a curved guide was positioned above it to correctly feed the ribbon to the receiving window of the weapon. On the left, behind the vertical support, a fabric collection of sleeves was installed on the “heavy” platform.
At the Army-2017 forum, both versions of the portable platform were shown with mockups of the PKTM machine gun. In both cases, the machine guns were supposed to use an electric descent control system.
A curious feature of the two PPDUs was the open placement of some cables. A pair of cables connected to the connectors on the rotary installation departed from the electrical release and the optoelectronic apparatus. The cable responsible for the power supply and two-way communication with the console moved away from the last one. The console and platform do not connect directly; between them there is a special switching unit.

Both platform prototypes were demonstrated with standard controls. The operator’s console of the PPDU complex is designed as a secure container suitcase and has the necessary set of equipment. The flip cover accommodates a color monitor designed to output a signal from opto-electronic systems. The main part of the container is designed for installation of equipment and controls. In two niches that prevent damage to the screen, and between them are several connectors for power cables and communication with the platform, a joystick and several switches.
Such a control panel provides two-way communication between the operator and the combat module. The operator can monitor the terrain using the platform optics and give the necessary commands. The possibility of remote control of fire and sight. The use of a wired communication line eliminates the possibility of signal suppression by means of electronic warfare. At the same time, this feature of the complex simplifies and cheapens its deployment at a specified position.
Last year, it was reported that the portable platform controls were built using state-of-the-art technology. The console is equipped with its own computer, working on the principles of the so-called. artificial neural network. Due to this, the possibility of automatic operation of the complex with minimal human participation is provided. Automation is able to independently monitor the sector entrusted to it and perform target detection. However, while the neural network can not independently recognize the detected object, and therefore it does not trust the opening of fire. The final decision on the attack remains with the man.
The portable platform with remote control of the PDA is characterized by a rather simple design suitable for use in various purposes and in various conditions. This product can be placed at any fixed position, and the deployment is not particularly difficult. The platform has a minimum size and weight that allows you to move it by several people. First of all, the new complex can be useful when performing guard duty. A remotely controlled combat module with several optical instruments and its own weapon is able to monitor the situation and attack the enemy no worse than a live sentry. At the same time, the mechanical "guard" has obvious advantages over man. Using several products PPDU, you can organize a developed and effective system of protection of a given object. By showing the required results, the automation will be able to reduce the burden on the operator. The tracking and detection work will be performed by the neural network, while the person will only have to identify the target and initiate the attack.
Apparently, the design of the combat module allows its placement not only in stationary positions. It is quite possible that PPDU can be used as light and fast-mounted weapons for a particular equipment, including those that do not have regular weapons. With the help of a light platform, any army vehicle can turn into a combat vehicle.
At last year's Army-2017 military-technical forum, the Kalashnikov concern showed only models of a promising remote-controlled system. Demonstration of these products was not carried out. However, in just a few months, the developer organization showed the public cadres from testing the new system.
A few days ago, the Kalashnikov concern published photos and video footage from recent tests conducted at one of the testing grounds near Moscow. Several new types of weapons and equipment of domestic development were tested in winter conditions at once. Combat automated systems “Companion” and “Nakhlebnik”, samples of small arms and equipment for fighters worked at the snow-covered range. Along with other new products, a lightweight version of the lightweight version of the platform was sent to the test site.

As the published materials show, in recent months, the authors of the project have managed to refine the existing system. The most notable external change was the use of new cartridge box installation tools. Now they are large and possibly able to accommodate larger ammunition. In addition, next to the platform at the position was a switching unit, to which cables from the module itself and, probably, from the control panel were connected. From the previously shown product, this block was large.
The demo video included footage of the PPDA system. The portable platform was installed in the firing position, using the maximum “span” of the supports, which, however, led to a certain decrease in the height of the line of fire. With the use of existing equipment, the operator of the complex was able to direct the weapon at a conventional target and open fire.
In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the system, testers fired a stone building from the existing PKTM machine gun. The firepower of such weapons was enough to make a lot of holes in the brickwork and reliably hit the conditional enemy. On the mannequins, imitating the enemy fighters, left a lot of bullet holes and other damage. Despite the “through wounds”, the bullets were able to transfer enough energy to the mannequins and throw them to the ground.
On the published video, you can see that the proposed machine-gun installation on the machine with four supports is different rigidity and stable behavior. The simplest recoil gears really managed to absorb most of the recoil, thanks to which the entire combat module assembly maintained high stability and did not show a tendency toward significant displacement.

According to known data, to date, "Portable (weapon) platform with remote control" managed to go to the test and show their main features. However, while there is no information about current work and the status of projects. As a result, it is still too early to talk about the real prospects of the most interesting Russian development. The available information shows the CAP system as a very interesting product, suitable for use in various fields.
When reviewing the CAP system, attention is drawn to both the basic concept of the project and the individual solutions used in its development. The new combat module can be at least one of the first Russian developments with automation based on artificial neural networks, capable of independently finding suspicious objects. In addition, for the first time in domestic practice, a combat module is developed not for mounting on any equipment and is considered as a stationary system.
Armies may be interested in a wide variety of weapons and military equipment, including those intended for solving not the most difficult, but important tasks. Perspective portable platform ППДУ can find application in different areas, and therefore is able to interest potential customers. However, for the time being there is no information on a possible order for the supply of such systems. What will be the future of interesting domestic development - will be known later.
