The National Interest: C-400, new cruise missiles and more

6
The West-2017 joint strategic exercise, which took place in mid-September, caused quite a stir and attracted the attention of many countries. A few weeks before the start of this event, the foreign press began to talk about the risks associated with it, and also did not fail to recall the “Russian aggression”. However, not all foreign publications panicked. Less frightening to the reader were published materials on weapons and military equipment of training participants.

September 29 The National Interest published in the Buzz section an article by military analyst Nicholas J. Myers titled “S-400, New Cruise Missile Cruise Missiles and not only: how the Russian army returns to a big way "). The topic of this publication is the latest Russian developments in weapons and techniques used in recent joint exercises. According to the author, a thorough study of the current situation can reveal plans for the development of the Russian army over the next few years.

N. Myers begins his article with an interesting proposal. While the Russian military are returning from their Zapad-2017 exercises to their bases (and special forces units are preparing for new maneuvers at Belarusian proving grounds), the author suggests considering the curious features of past events. He believes that Russian military technologies are of great interest.

In the recent past and now, Russia is spending significant funds on the creation and purchase of precision weapons and next-generation systems, while at the same time talking about the positive impact of such acquisitions on the economy. Over the past ten years, a lot of new designs have come into service, but only around the four systems in the Russian press has a peculiar "personality cult" appeared. This honor was given to the Iskander operational tactical missile system, the Caliber cruise missile, the Bal coastal defense complex and the C-400 anti-aircraft system.

All of these complexes, with the exception of the Caliber missiles, were actively used in the course of the recent Russian-Belarusian exercises. Published information on the course of the exercises and the features of the use of certain systems allow us to draw certain conclusions. N. Myers notes that the new cruise missiles were not used during the West-2017 maneuvers, but still did not remain idle. It was during the period of the joint exercises “Calibri” that they performed another blow to the objects of terrorists in Syria.

During the recent exercises, the Iskander OTRK was deployed at the Luga artillery range (Leningrad Oblast), the northernmost site used during the maneuvers. At the same time, the calculations of the complexes did not have to be removed a considerable distance from their base. September 19, on the last day of the defense phase of the exercise, the Iskander units arrived at the assigned positions, trained and performed at least one launch of the rocket. The day before, Tu-22М3 bomber joined the enemy in this direction. The grouping of land missile systems was strengthened by the systems "Tochka-U".

The author recalls that by now the number of active OTRK “Tochka-U” has noticeably decreased: there are only two units left in the Russian army with such equipment. By the end of the decade, they are supposed to be transferred to the new equipment of the Iskander family. The Belarusian side of 16 September also deployed its operational tactical complexes. At the same time, the crews of "Points-U" had to interact with the troops of radiation, chemical and biological protection, and then strike a conventional enemy.

In recent years, near the Russian naval bases, positions of Bal coast defense complexes have appeared. At the end of last year, such systems began serving as part of the Baltic coastal forces. fleet, and it would be surprising if they were not involved in the Russian-Belarusian exercises. On September 19, coastal missile systems received orders to advance to their firing positions and soon destroyed the conditional enemy. The author notes that the practice of shooting the Ball complex attracted the attention of the Russian and foreign press, while the launch of the anti-ship missile with the Soobrazitelny corvette, carried out on the same day, almost went unnoticed.

Together with other air defense systems, the C-2017 anti-aircraft missile system set off for the Zapad-400 exercises. At the same time, however, the most interesting newsassociated with this air defense system, arrived shortly before the start of the exercises. So, September 12 Turkey officially announced the signing of the contract for the supply of C-400 systems, which puts an end to the negotiation process, which lasted several months.

In response to the suspicions and assumptions that existed, the Russian media were quick to announce that the sale of domestic complexes to a NATO country would not lead to the loss of critical technologies. In general, according to The National Interest, the results of the practical use of the C-400 air defense systems at the Zapad-2017 exercises are in the shadow of news about the Russian-Turkish contract and are eclipsed by the consequences of such a deal.

The American author recalled another recent event that occurred at a further distance from the Belarusian landfills. In parallel with the exercises "West-2017" Russian submarines of the 636.3 "Varshavyanka" project - "Velikiy Novgorod" and "Kolpino" - launched Caliber missiles. The purpose of this missile strike were the objects of terrorists near the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor. This was the second September attack using Calibrov. Also, similar weapons were used 5 and 22 September for solving similar problems.

The use of cruise missiles in Syria attracted the attention of the press and the public around the world, but the real innovations were shown during the joint Russian-Belarusian exercises. The Russian military demonstrated and used in practice new improved electronic intelligence tools, including those built on the basis of unmanned aerial vehicles. Also a big role in the exercises "West-2017" played a means of navigation, using satellites of the GLONASS system.

As N. Myers writes, repeating the tactics used in the Donbass, Russian troops used Drones for conducting reconnaissance and issuing target designation to multiple launch rocket systems. In addition, this technique was also used to coordinate the actions of troops. UAVs have become a critical component of a system designed to protect the Kaliningrad region from an attack by a mock enemy. In addition, unmanned aerial vehicles were involved in the course of testing the skills of military air defense calculations. Small drones were used as targets.

The author recalls that all the main trends associated with the use of unmanned aviation, were observed not only during the West-2017 exercises. Similar approaches are used by the Russian army and in other maneuvers. All this clearly demonstrates a centralized approach to the collection and use of information about ongoing hostilities.

Another major feature of the recent exercises was the active use of the Strelets reconnaissance, control and communications complex (KRUS). This complex has already been adopted and is being introduced everywhere. The Strelets system allows divisions as a whole and individual fighters to navigate using GLONASS satellite signals and provides some other options. In the recent exercises KRUS "Strelets", first of all, was used to ensure the environment of the enemy and exit to the rear. Thus, the Russian army masters "space" technologies, and also vividly demonstrates their full potential in the context of operational use.

The strategic joint exercise "West-2017", which ended a few weeks ago, was intended to develop independent and joint actions of the troops. The General Staff intended to show exactly how it is going to respond to certain threats and scenarios. New developments, technologies and equipment samples, shown during the exercises, should affect the preparation of future plans. N. Myers believes that they will influence further planning over the next few years.

The Russian-Belarusian exercise Zapad-2017 took place only a few weeks ago, and therefore it is probably not necessary to remind you how foreign officials and the media reacted to them. Long before the beginning of the maneuvers, far from friendly statements and statements began to appear, the authors of which accused Russia of the most evil intentions. It was argued that Moscow intends to rattle arms and intimidate Europe and fulfill a future attack on its western neighbors. And from the most zealous speakers it was possible to find out that during the maneuvers - hiding behind them - Russia and Belarus would arrange a real attack on several neighboring states. After the start of the joint strategic exercise, the intensity of such “revelations” intensified.

Against the background of numerous intimidating publications and statements, the article by Nicholas J. Myers “S-400, New Cruise” looks just an example of analytics. Trying not to resort to actual military-political clichés, the American author examined the use of the latest Russian weapons and equipment during the exercises, as well as outside of them.

The review article highlighted the use of operational-tactical missile systems, anti-aircraft missile systems, cruise missiles, UAVs, and numerous modern electronic equipment. At the same time, remaining within the period of the exercise, the author raised the issues of the military use of "Calibrov" and military-technical cooperation of the countries.

The article ends with obvious, but fair conclusions: joint Russian-Belarusian exercises were necessary to test and refine the latest ideas in the field of tactics, as well as to run in existing weapons systems, equipment, special equipment, etc. The results of exercises related to this area will be taken into account in the further development of plans. The results of the implementation of such plans, apparently, will again interest foreign authors and will be the topic of the next publications in The National Interest.

Myers flatter us ... His information on the centralized use of UAVs is incorrect, we do not have such systems as the adjustment of the RSRS firing from UAVs can only be done manually for stationary targets, and the centralized systematic use of simple UAV - RSZO bundles and their work in real time you only have to dream .... Yes, and Sagittarius can not properly use the signals from the UAV .... It seems that the uncle began and heard enough of our storytellers from the Moscow Region

Tornado seems to have a missile with an UAV. 15-30 minutes corrected MLRS ..... It seems so, but I could be wrong.

Articles of National Interest should not be placed on this site. This is the level of Popular Mechanics.
